I wanted to give you more details for this Saturday's event. Parking is $7 in the Student Center Parking Structure. We have plenty of good food ordered from Togo's, a talented student panel lined up, and lots of great information to share. I did, however, notice that rain is in the forecast for Saturday. Therefore, the baseball game plan may be derailed, yet you will all be added to the guest list for games on Friday and Sunday under our group name "American Indian College Information Day." Native American Science Scholarships

Dear Friend,

In 2008, the Department of Anthropology at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science began a series of programs designed to enhance Native American youth and young adult participation in science. Through the generous support of our donors, last year we offered a Native American Science Career Day for middle school students, and in 2009 we expanded that offering to a larger number of students with a larger number of mentors present. In 2008, we offered five $1,000 Native American Science Scholarships to college-bound high school seniors and continuing college and graduate students. In 2009, we again have five $1,000 scholarships to offer, but we have a small problem—we did not receive enough complete applications from qualified students by yesterday's September 1 application deadline to award the full allotment of scholarships for which we already have funding in hand!

I write to you today to respectfully request your assistance in spreading the word about this important program. Importantly, the awards come with no strings attached. Recipients may use the money for books, tuition, room, board, or any other expense they may have.

We have extended the application deadline to Thursday, October 1. We have also dropped the "preference" for Colorado residents or Colorado-based students and will consider applications from college-bound, or currently enrolled, Native American science students anywhere in the greater Rocky Mountain region, including the Southwest, Plains, and Northwest.

The application itself is relatively short, requiring the student to write three, 150-word paragraphs, but it does require that the applicant obtain two letters of recommendation, so time is of the essence. Details may be found at www.dmns.org/nascience.

Please help us spread the word about this important program by telling your colleagues and any promising indigenous science scholars you may know. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. The Denver Museum of Nature & Science is keenly and demonstrably interested in supporting these well-qualified students, we simply need your help finding them.

Each year, the National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development awards scholarships to American Indian college or graduate students majoring in business. Scholarships will be awarded at the 34th Annual Indian Progress in Business Event (INPRO 2009) which will take place September 16 - 18, 2009 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Selected recipients must be available to attend the INPRO Awards Banquet on September 18, 2009. Selected recipients will be provided air and ground transportation to the event. Lodging will be reimbursed for the nights of September 17 and 18, 2009.

Eight (8) American Indian Fellowship in Business Scholarships will be awarded to American Indian college or graduate students majoring in business who are currently in the junior, senior or master level of study. Eligible students must be enrolled for the entire 2009/2010 term.

ALERT: AARP FOUNDATION WOMEN'S SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM January 23, 2009

The AARP Foundation Womens Scholarship Program opens February 3, 2009. Visit http://www.aarpfoundationwlc.org/ to apply. Please help us spread the word by sending this out through your networks. The AARP Foundation Womenʼs Scholarship Program third round will be open from February 3 to March 31, 2009. Applications are online only http://www.aarpfoundationwlc.org

The scholarship is open to low-income women 40+. Priority is given to women who are in one of three categories:

1) women raising the children of another family member,

2) those in dead end jobs and

3) those who have been out of the paid workforce for an extended period.

The scholarships, which ranged from $500 to $5,000, are to be used for tuition and books are paid directly to the educational institution.

Nearly three hundred women were helped through the program in the first round and about 250 women received scholarships in round two. The program is funded by AARP with generous support the AARP Foundation Womens Leadership Circle .

2009 NIHB Public Health Summer Fellowship

The National Indian Health Board (NIHB) believes in the importance of building the public health workforce, where American Indians and Alaska Natives have the capacity to address the health needs of their own communities.

Committed to this goal, NIHB has partnered with the Morehouse School of Medicine, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Emory University Rollins School of Public Health and the Minority Health Professions Foundation to implement the second annual NIHB Public Health Summer Fellowship Program for American Indian and Alaska Native students. The program is designed to introduce and expose American Indians and Alaska Natives students to public health careers.

Program Outline

Based in Atlanta, Georgia, the NIHB Public Health Summer Fellows program is an academically rigorous and intensive nine (9) week summer program. Students will experience firsthand the excitement, relevance and promise of careers in Public Health.

The program's focus includes:

Principles of Epidemiology
Disease Surveillance/Investigation
Community Based Public Health Research

The program commences with a one-week course to provide students with a foundation in the principles of epidemiology. The program then combines this academic knowledge with direct hands-on field experience. Using the combined resources of program sponsors and collaborators, students are placed into community based public health internships. During this nine-week fellowship, participants work with professional mentors who are at the forefront of researching the nation's priority public health issues. Students will participate in weekly seminars and learn how to analyze important health policy, programming and research issues. During the final week of the program Fellows participate in a symposium and provide oral presentations on their internship experiences.

Selection Criteria

Applicants must be U.S. citizens and enrolled as rising junior or senior undergraduate students or have received an undergraduate degree within six months prior to the application deadline. Applicants must be American Indian or Alaska Native and be able to provide supporting documentation as we move forward with the award process.

Student selection is based on criteria of:

Leadership ability and skill

Stipend

Participants will receive a $ 2,000 stipend upon completion of the program. Housing, meals, local public transportation cost, and travel to and from Atlanta are provided.

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - A retired Cherokee citizen has established two scholarships at a Texas college for American Indian students studying engineering.

R. Larry Snider, 75, and his wife, Gerri, established the scholarships in 2007 at the University of Houston Cullen College of Engineering.

One scholarship offers a full ride to any engineering student who is a citizen of a federally recognized tribe, but preference is given to Cherokee or Choctaw students.

The second scholarship is a $5,000 award to female engineering students.

"God has blessed us abundantly financially, and we want to encourage Native American students to go to college - particularly engineering college - so they could reap the benefits of a college education," Snider said.

Snider said his parents couldn't afford to send him to college so he had to work 40 hours - sometimes more - a week at whatever job he could get just to pay for college. He said he worked many jobs in retail until he got enough engineering education to work as a draftsman or engineering assistant.

"I took five years to finish as I started out to be a medical doctor as my mother was a nurse," he said. "So we knew first-hand how difficult it was to attend college without financial assistance."

He and Gerri married while he was a junior in college. After that their "night out" for the week was to eat the "Blue Plate Special" at Walgreens for 99 cents and then spend 50 cents to go to a double feature movie watching old movies.

They paid $35 a month for rent - including utilities - at an apartment above a garage. The apartment was so tiny that one room was the kitchen, bedroom and sitting area all in one. And when they opened the oven door they had to remove everything from the kitchen table because the oven door covered the table.

"I rode a motorcycle to college everyday, and my wife took a bus, which required several changes to get to her job at a telephone company in downtown Houston," Snider said.

Snider didn't tell anyone he was Native American because as a child he had seen his father - who was a pipe fitter - get forced off the streets when he was in Muskogee, Okla., because he was a "half-breed."

Now, Snider wants Cherokee youth to be able to attend college and enter in a career in engineering, opportunities he didn't have as a young student.

Vita P. Como, the Cullen College senior director of development and director of the Engineering Career Center, is leading the effort to attract more Indian students to apply for the scholarships.

"They're really enthusiastic about getting it out there. I wish all my alumni were like the Sniders," Como said. "Engineering has been the way up and way out for people who want to enter professional careers."

The University of Houston has a student population of about 42,000, and the engineering college has an undergraduate student population of about 2,300.

The Sniders said they would fund the scholarships every year, and if tuition rises, they would cover it as well. Students can apply for admission online at www.uh.edu. The scholarships are open to all disciplines in engineering.

Smithsonian Native American Community Scholars Awards

SCOPE: The Smithsonian Institution is inviting applications for

minority fellowships and internships using its collections.

DEADLINE: January 15 for the Latino Studies Fellowships. February 1
and October 1 for the Native American Community Scholars and Visiting
Student Awards, the Minority Visiting Student Awards, and the James E.
Webb Internship Program.

FUNDS: The annual stipend for the Latino Studies Postdoctoral Fellows
and Senior Fellows is $42,000, and for Pre-doctoral Fellows is
$27,000.

Minority Visiting Student Awards and the James E. Webb Intership offer
a $500 weekly stipend for 10 weeks.

Native American Community Scholars Awards offer stipends of $150 per
day for up to 21 days, a travel allowance, and a small research
allowance. Native American Visiting Student Awards offer stipends of
$150 per day for up to 21 days and $400 per week for three to 10
weeks, a travel allowance, and a small research allowance.

ELIGIBILITY: The Latino Studies Postdoctoral Fellowships are open to
U.S. Latino/a applicants who have or will have held the Ph.D. or
equivalent for less than seven years. Those who have held the Ph.D. or
equivalent for seven years or more are eligible for Senior
Fellowships. U.S. Latino/a students enrolled in a university as
candidates for the Ph.D. or equivalent are eligible for Pre-doctoral
Fellowships.

Minority Visiting Student Awards are open to advanced graduate
students from U.S. minority groups who are underrepresented in
Smithsonian scholarly programs, in the disciplines of research
conducted at the Institution, and in the museum field.

Native American Community Scholars Awards are open to Native Americans
who are formally or informally related to a Native American community.
Native American Visiting Student Awards are open to currently
enrolled, advanced Native American graduate students who are formally
or informally related to a Native American community.

The Webb Internships are open to minority undergraduate juniors and
seniors and graduate students in business and public administration.

AREAS: Fellowships in Latino Studies support research related to
Latino history, art, and culture using Smithsonian resources.

The Minority Awards support research or museum-related internship
projects under the supervision of Institution staff members. The James
E. Webb Internship Program promotes diversity in the management of
non-profit scientific and cultural institutions.

Pukuu Cultural Comunity Services established with the Fernandeno TataviamBand of Mission Indians the California Indian Scholarship Program thatprovides funds to help American Indian students with higher educationstudies. The California Indian Scholarship Program will provide two awardsof $1,000 each to support American Indian students living in California intheir academic studies. Scholarships shall be granted to eligible applicantson a yearly basis (as long as there are funds available). Each award is fora 12-month period, renewable for a second year pending demonstration ofexceptional progress.

*Who is Eligible?*Scholarships are available to eligible American Indian students who areundergraduate or graduate students enrolled full or three-fourths time.In order to qualify for this scholarship, you must be:

- A resident of California and American Indian or Alaskan Native.(Documentation of enrollment or descendancy and State ID is required.)
- Be actively involved in the Native American community.- Accepted by an approved college, university, or vocational school inCalifornia.
