Airside: News The latest news from Airside design studio. en-us Airside London 1998-2012 Thu, 24 Nov 2011 00:00:00 GMT
After 14 years of creating groundbreaking design, we have decided to shut up shop for good at the end of March next year. We will remain fully open for business up until that date.

To clarify the reasons behind this remarkable decision, the three founders, Alex, Nat and Fred have prepared the following statement.

For the record, we aren’t going bust, in fact we’re currently thriving. We haven’t fallen out with each other, in fact we’re as close as we ever were. What has happened is that after fourteen years of working together we have grown into different people with different goals and despite all of our best efforts we can’t see a way for Airside to move forward and accommodate all of our individual ambitions. You could put it down to musical differences if you like!

The world has changed enormously since we started in 1998 and we feel we’ve been a big part of that change. We were lucky enough to be the first of a certain kind of design company that now feels like the norm. New paradigms are emerging and as individuals we want to explore them in a way that Airside is currently unable to. Our influence has been very clear on a generation of creative practitioners and that makes us feel good; it also feels like our work here is done.

We feel that it is completely true to the unique spirit of Airside to end the company as friends and to end it on a high. We’ll be making an announcement as to our individual future plans nearer the time of our closure and there will of course be a party to mark our closing. Between now and then we’ll be focussed as always on creating amazing work for our clients and ourselves – the last chance for us to work together as Airside. Although we definitely plan to collaborate in future, and don’t bet against a re-union tour in 2022! And of course the spirit of Airside will live on in the shape of our Tokyo branch Airside Nippon, which will continue to trade as usual.

Voluntarily choosing to end Airside has been one of the toughest decisions we've ever made but it also feels completely right. We’ve loved every minute of working together and feel like we created a truly unique company that completely fulfilled all the dreams that we had back in 1998: maybe that's why it feels OK to end it now. When we see the inspiration and positive impact we believe we've had on the creative world we are very proud.

Sniff! We'll all really miss Airside.

Update 4th July 2011 – please note that applications for the Junior position are now closed. If you have not heard from us, then you have not been shortlisted. Apologies, but there were a lot of replies.

Airside work in a wide range of disciplines, from animation and illustration to digital consultancy. You'll be a good thinker who will take interest in all aspects of our projects.

We need an all-round creative with strong design skills who enjoys the process of making, with a focus on illustration and animation. You'll bring something new to the Airside team, we're not interested in clones!

You'll be confident using the Creative Suite software and have some animation or moving image software skills. Any 3D software and digital development knowledge would be a great bonus.

You'll have an awareness of the digital world and be interested in online sharing through blogs, Flickr and other mediums.

Virgin's new In-Flight Entertainment system up and running Thu, 23 Jun 2011 00:00:00 GMT
If you're flying Virgin Atlantic between Manchester and Orlando anytime soon, you will get to play with the new In-Flight Entertainment system.

Working with Panasonic and Massive, Airside helped create an In-flight Entertainment system like no other; it is intuitive, timeless, and uniquely Virgin Atlantic.

At Airside, we understand that, no matter how much fun playing with a touch screen is initially, the average user still wants to be able to access content as quickly as possible. We organised the content so that the most popular items, the latest movies for example, are just a few touches away, rather than the 15 plus clicks of many IFE systems. It is also the first IFE to have user ratings for movies.

We're putting together a short film to follow soon, which will show the system in action and explain its features as well as the process of creating it.
To The Victor, The Spoils! – premieres this week at Short & Sweet festival Tue, 21 Jun 2011 00:00:00 GMT
Finally, we can share with you news of our latest music promo adventure for Flashman!

Short & Sweet are hosting an evening of short films, animations and music promos this Thursday on Brick Lane, and brilliantly, they will be premiering our Flashman film – To The Victor, The Spoils!

To The Victor features treachery, treason, two-timing, bearded women and beheading – it's a music video that Beavis & Butthead would love. Inspired by the music of Flashman (Fred Deakin of Lemon Jelly and Robin Jones of the Beta Band), the film is brought to you by Airside.

If you can't get along to see it on Thursday, full public release will be on 19th July so sit tight for another few weeks – sorry!

Films start at 9pm, Thursday 23rd June

The wooden lawn outside the Truman Brewery Building, 146 Brick Lane, London E1 5LJ

It's free, but bring your own food, drink & blankets as you'll be sitting under the stars. Twinkle twinkle.

'The Proposition" promo showing at Volt Festival, Sweden Thu, 09 Jun 2011 00:00:00 GMT
The recent music promo made for Flashman's The Proposition track will be part of the music film programme at this weekend's Volt Festival in Sweden.

The programme, hosted by, is a music video odyssey featuring The Cinematic Orchestra, Amon Tobin, Woolkid, Röyksopp and Massive Attack so we're in jolly good company.

We only wish we could attend. *sad face*

At the other end of the festival scale, Airside work is also being shown at the Oxford Castle Flower & Gardening Festival, this weekend.

The organisers asked Airside if they could screen the classic Lemon Jelly promo, Nice Weather For Ducks, along with our 2007 Live Earth film, A Beginner's Guide To Giving A Dam... as part of their promotion of environmental sensitivity. Naturally, we said yes; we do like a country fair!
Travelers Insurance Thu, 26 May 2011 00:00:00 GMT
In this new piece of work for Travelers Insurance company, our brief was to produce two web banner animations across three formats, to convey the importance of being prepared when mistakes happen.

One film is set on a bridge and the other at a drive-thru burger joint. Airside were comissioned to bring the films to life with a simple illustration and animation style. After settling a stylised colour palette that complimented the branding we produced an illustration style that could work at a small size in both long and tall formats. The animation was kept simple and direct to focus on the story line.

A Fine Wine Website Tue, 29 Mar 2011 23:01:00 GMT
In May, UK wine importer Liberty Wines will launch a new Airside-designed website.

Despite a sterling reputation for quality and innovation, Liberty Wines’ online presence was the wrong kind of vintage, so they turned to Airside for a revamp.

To get to the heart of what the company needed from a website, we interviewed as many members of the business as possible to find out what made Liberty Wines special.

From that we developed a fresh digital strategy that focuses on the quality of service and customer relations that the company's clients value so much, whilst also communicating the Liberty Wines brand, rich history, and values.

The new Liberty Wines website launches in May. In the meantime, on the right is a brief preview of Airside’s crisp, well-balanced new design.

Unfortunately this month’s Bill Moggridge event at London’s Design Museum has just been cancelled.

Airside director Alex Maclean was due to join the IDEO-founder on stage for a discussion on design in new media, but the museum's website states that the event is now cancelled.

It is hoped that the talk can be rescheduled for later in the year.

Watch Simplyhealth ad online Thu, 10 Feb 2011 02:00:00 GMT
Airside’s new TV commercial for Simplyhealth is now available to watch on our Vimeo channel.

The ad, which was launched on February 8th, is called Always There and uses a riot of roto-scoping and colour to highlight the healthcare provider’s renowned customer experience.

The latter is just one of the benefits that saw Simplyhealth voted Best Health Insurance Provider at the 2011 Consumer Moneyfacts Awards.

Always There is designed and produced by Airside, working with advertising agency MWO, and is currently showing on various channels, including ITV1, Channel 4, Five and Sky1.
