Trekking Down the Valley of Sandhan

Some treks are adventurous, some are thrilling, some terrific and some are tough; but some treks are just enjoyable, it has got a mixture of adventure, thrill and largest share is taken by fun. In this rapid way of living, where is the time to stop and have senseless conversation, that don’t mean anything or where is the time to sit down and argue on your favourite topic, where is the time to sit with your loved one and gaze the stars above endlessly, timelessly, infinitely? On such treks like Sandhan Valley, where the ever distracting technology is not with you, where one is not constantly swiping through cell phones to get latest updates on messages and mails; or where one is not constantly bombarded with unnecessary questions. Finally Small Steps Adventures had organized this famous trek of Sandhan.

Start of Journey

Train Journey till Kasara

The journey to Sandhan started with the train from CST to kasara. People boarded the train from respective stations and we gathered all into first boogie of train. We reached kasara at around 1.30 am.

From kasara 3 trax were booked which took us to base village. We were around 30 people.
Reached the base village at 4.30 am, rested for a while and at 6 am, refreshed ourselves; and were served with delicious breakfast of ‘kande pohe and tea.’ A little introductory session and we were set to start the trek.

We moved forward towards the valley. Sandhan is a great combination of canyon and valley. There are 300 feet rock walls on both sides. Once started with descend one could literally feel moving through mystic environment. Rocks on all sides, walking on stones and rocks, walls of carved rocks. The valley is deep enough for not reaching the strong sun light, which is a pleasure. Walking in shadows provide a cool climate. We were divided into 3 groups. Every group had a leader, The first group was led by Shreeharsha, The Second was led by Sushant and Sagar was leading the last group at the back. Chaitrali and me were connecting the groups and gaps.

Walking further we could see many pools of water formed. Fishes are also present in them. After sometime we reached a spot where there was water till waist length and the rock walls were very close to each other forming a narrow gap. We pulled our track pants up, took our bags on head and walked through it. The water was icy cold. It literally was freezing. After crossing this we had to walk further straight.

Just walking in the valley is a diverse experience. Long ahead one could see the opening of the valley and besides there were natural carvings formed on the wall.

Sometimes I feel reality is an amazing experience. Well places like these are heaven for photographers and platform for people who like to get photographed. Every 5 min of walk and we all clicked pictures. As now-a- days people are obsessed with their display pics, everyone was choosing the spots to get clicked and upload. Descending further in the Valley

We had walked nearly for 4 hours, now further descend started. Here the rock patches were tricky. One had to look carefully and step down. We were approaching the first rappelling patch. We had to cross 3 rappelling spots to reach camping site. The descend was pleasant change from just walking between the rock walls. Although just walking down them interacting with one another, having fun, didn’t realize how much time had passed. Rock walls now had widened the gap and it was sort of opening.

We reached the first rappelling spot at about 12.30 pm. It was 60 to 70 feet rappelling. The equipment was carried by the villagers who had lead us in the trek. Rappelling at this spot needed harness, carabineer and figure of 8 to be worn, in addition to gloves and helmet. For many of us who had trekked with small steps rappelling has become usual business now. Although there is a little flutter in stomach every time I start going down backwards but, it goes away quickly. We rappelled respectively as our groups reached the spot. I was present in the group which rappelled first. We descended and awaited for others to join us, until then we had lunch bhakri and sabji. Now the adventurous part of trek had started.

As we moved further we had to descend through rocks carefully taking grip sometimes; or just sliding through them. At some places water was percolating from rocks. The cold water satisfied our thirst.

Ponds of water with fishes in them could be seen frequently. There was one spot where we had to enter through a small hole in the rock, and then slide down further. It was kind of some ride.

The second rappelling spot was small in height. Rappelling by the rope was not actually required here. But for safety rope was tied, no equipment. The height was about 10 feet. But there were no crevices to take grip hence we had to leave our legs freely in the air and completely take grip of rope and push ourselves down. Also as it was a narrow spot. Bags were passed down directly.

A narrow stream of water was flowing here; we refreshed ourselves from dirt and sweat trekking for almost 6 hours now. Rested for a while and moved forward to the 3rd rappelling patch.The 3^rd rappelling patch was moderate it wasn't high as first also not as simple as 2^nd. Rope was definitely required but no equipment. It was around 20 to 30 feet. With rocks cut in between.

Thus the 3 rappelling patches were completed, now the camp-site was not far away. Half an hour of walk further and we reached a beautiful plateau, situated exactly in the center of hills. A stream of water was flowing down the rock and into the pond situated down the plateau, into the rocks. It was not approachable. We had carried tents with us, and started pitching on good spots before other groups could reach.

Tents were pitched, mats were rolled off, bags, luggage was gathered aside, twilight in the sky and we all rested for a while. After the rest, tea was served by villagers, and people took out the food they had brought for the trek. What a wonderful feeling it is to sip the tea during the saffron light of evening.

It was becoming dark, we all had engaged ourselves in fun conversations pulling each other’s legs and making fun of each other. As we sat around hearing each other’s experiences of treks, of their professional and personal lives, etc. dinner was ready; again prepared by villagers. Chapati, aloo sabji, dal and rice are perfect meal after exertion of trek.

After the meal, the favourite game antakshri was initiated by trek leaders. The game was fun. Variety and diverse songs were sung. The sound was echoing in the valley. The other groups also replicated us after some time. There were many funny moments while the game was being played, as some moments are inexplicable in the blogs, those are situation based. Soon the game turned into just singing random songs instead of teams playing antakshri. We all were singing till midnight loudly, so much that some songs got once more from other groups. The voice was getting echoed in the valley.

At almost 1’0 clock we stopped singing and decided to sleep for a while as next day we had to descend to base village. So most of us slept outside tent as it wasn’t that cold.

But what a starry night it was. Now- a-days due to pollution one can hardly even see a polestar.

Places like these away from cities, in the valleys and mountains, the sky is clear with millions of stars visible. We could actually even spot the satellites encircling.

Descend from Sandhan

Wakeup call at 5.30 and the dreams broke into the sunrise. The light was spreading, as we got up, and engaged ourselves in morning activities. Got refreshed and breakfast was served. A hot Maggie and tea , perfect breakfast for descend.

Packed the tents, packed the bags and ready for few clicks; which eventually turned into many because people were still in the mood of enjoyment.

Small Steps had carried out a wonderful gesture, while trekking we had collected all the waste and the plastic bottles into trash bags to clean the valley. While descending there were many trash bags, that need to be carried, everyone helped.

Descend was not that difficult, again we created 3 groups to descend. Ours was in middle this time. All the groups were coincidently were playing songs on speakers, and each group of different themes. Ours was party theme “mahol” we call it in hindi or Marathi. No silent songs in our speakers.

Walking through jungle was fun. Variety of trees with different fruits and flowers on them; just makes a realize importance of bio diversity in trees.

Finally we reached the base village and rested there for a while, had tea and Parle G biscuit.

The return journey began through trax till Asangaon station. Everyone boarded the train and got down at respective station, now what resides are memories and photographs of the wonderful journey.

It’s been many years now that I am trekking. Every trek gives me a different experience. Every trek I meet new people, new faces. The world is a big place, every new person I meet teaches me something different than before, gives me a different experience. This trek as said earlier was most enjoyable. Many people I knew because I had trekked with them, but the bond that was formed in this trek has emerged stronger. It’s like being in friendship for many years. 2 days of trek, and friends for lifetime. Thus these adventurous activities have got their own significance, especially in today’s world that has dark corners on every turn and enmity on every road.

The purpose of such expeditions is to spend a little time away from our busy life into peaceful and calm nature, where people from different walks of life join you, and one can make new relations.

Technical Details

Sandhan Valley: In Nagar District, Approximately 70-90Km from Kasara.

Base Village: Samrad

Transport: For Mumbai, Train till Kasara, and further Private vehicle, For Pune Private Vehicle preferred till Base village, or till Mumbai and then further.

Descend Base Village: Dehane and reach Asangaon by trax or private vehicle about 1 to 1 and ½ hours.

On the Steeps of Dhak

It is Sunday and we are ready to jump on the wagon of another adventure. This time it is the caves of Dhak Bahiri in Karjat region of Maharashtra. Dhak bahiri are the caves situated in middle of the cliff of Dhak fort in Sahyadri Mountains. The caves are situated at around 2600 ft. from base village. There is also a temple of Lord Bahiri.

Start of Journey and Introduction.

Our day started with Journey from Dadar to Lonavala to Kamshet base village. As usual everyone was geared up and excited for the trek. Bus Journeys are fun. They are the window to get know the fellow trekkers. It works as an ice breaker. Here is the unusual bond that you form which lies between friend and companions in the trekking expedition. As usual routine follows with the game of Antakshri; singing songs loudly together is such a fun; followed by breakfast of ‘kande pohe.’ This breakfast I think can now be patented by Small Steps.

Reaching the base village near Kamshet, we had a small introductory session to formally know each other followed by trekking instructions. Trek leaders were Sagar, Rashmi and Prashant and even I was given the role this time of bridging the gap between groups. Branching out am I?

The trek falls into medium category. With hills up and down one has to walk lot. The Jungle provides shade from long and high trees and coolness in sunny day.

Climbing the hill one reaches a narrow gap which divides two hills; it is kind of gully. The narrow opening descends into other side of hill. The thrilling and adventurous part of trek starts from here. It is a narrow opening in its literal sense even bags can’t pass; one has to throw them down. One could see scenic view of mountains situated far away in the ranges through gap. Well lots of pictures were clicked here as, one by one people were descending.

Descending through this we had to walk traverse on the edge of the mountain; a rocky patch of around 60 to 70 degree gradient.

Leaning right we walked further and reached a small cave, here we put our bags and removed our shoes. As there is temple on the top we were advised to remove footwear. But as soon as we removed it, our feet started burning due to heat; the rocks had become hot in sunny day. But we moved further and reached a point from where one has to climb vertically.

Here rope is hanged for the support, and we had to climb by taking grip in the crevices of the rocks. The climb was quite steep and we climbed one by one. Another steep rock patch starts from here and we climbed narrow steps on the hill carved on the edges by taking support of rocks; ahead two logs of trees were kept closely held to each other.

The wooden log sways preciously with rhythm of the person. One has to take support of it and climb them by putting foot on small branches, like a ladder, here also rope was hanging for the support, we clutched it and climbed up with the help of branch ladder. The two steep rock patches were done.

Finally we arrived at the top into the caves. The caves are big and spacious and divided into compartments. A small temple of Lord Bahiri is built in the cave. There are two water tanks in the caves. Many people who had trekked and reached there were cooking food. Utensils can be found in the caves, people who come here offer utensils and keep in the caves. One can use it, clean it and keep them in the caves only. There is also a superstition that women are not allowed; but girls in our group came till the caves, villagers did not oppose. It is also said that Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj once visited these caves of God Bahiri Maharaj.

We rested for a while and then cameras were out, selfies, DP’s followed with pictures of natural scenery that could be viewed from the cave. The mountains of ranges can be viewed in semicircular shape from here, which makes a spectacular panoramic scene. After a while we started descending.

The descend was more thrilling, as being on the edge we could directly look down into valley; the real importance of rope is while descending as one could say ‘no hope without rope.’

Climbing down the steep patches we walked to reach the caves where we had removed our shoes and kept our bags. Retrieving them we moved ahead to reach narrow opening between two hills. We had trekked quite fast, nearly in 2 hours we had reached the top. Ascending on the narrow gap, we walked further into the jungle, finding a spacious place in the shadow of trees, we had our lunch. The lunch from the start was carried by trek leaders, and rotated in the group. Chapati and aloo sabji re-energized us from the climbing and descend.

The climbing and descending of hills was exhausting and we were getting dehydrated quite often. But encouraging each other we continued and finally reached a beautiful pond at the base of the village.Here we freshened ourselves filled our water bottles, and walked further to reach where our bus was standing.

Back Journey.

Reaching the assembly point, we bought some refreshments, climbed into the bus put our bags and settled ourselves. It did not feel too exhausting to sleep; everyone engaged in conversations, songs, music and memories from the trek. As we reached Mumbai one by one we got down at our stops and bid adieu. Finally another Sunday spent on trek was worthwhile.

Back Journey

Trekking journeys form many bonds and relationships with fellow trekkers. Some bonds turn into friendship, some are just to make fun of each other, some are flirtatious, some form deep bond of trust with each other, some become codependent for treks. But we all are fellow trekkers; enthusiastic about such expeditions and there is a mutual feeling of accomplishment that only we understand after every journey.

About the trek

Thrilling experience that’s the expression. The AMK trek as it is called; one of the most difficult treks in Sahyadri Ranges. The trek we were all awaiting was finally organised by Small Steps. I had once in my previous blog said that Small Steps takes you out of your comfort zone for weekends; but this is something different, this is not merely going out of comfort zone, the trek requires ambition from within, it requires self confidence that you can do it and you will do it. Believe me this is no fun; there is no scope for getting panicked during this trek.

Start of Journey

We started from Thane to Kasara on Friday night, it was the last local train to Kasara, we were about 27 of us and all were good trekkers. After reaching Kasara by around 1.30; 2 trax were booked that took us to base village to climb Alang, The ride to base village was also wonderful going from Kasara Ghat, Nashik Highway and then taking a turn for base village, There was lot of traffic and crowd on highway and on Dhabas as it was weekend. Most of the groups were going to Sandhan valley. We reached the base village at about 4 am in the morning. There was biting cold we rested near a school on outside Veranda. At 6 in the morning we lit camp-fire as the cold was unbearable; some warmth gave us relief. Datta and I had got up early shivering with cold, and lit the camp-fire. Datta is another good trekker, whom I had met during previous trek (Harischandragad). We trekked this one together.

Around 6.30 we all got ready to climb Alang. Breakfast was served by villagers and some of them were going to lead us in the trek. So we bucked up, got set and ready.

First we had to walk for nearly 45 mins, then the climb started. The climb to Alang is steep, it does leave you tired for a while.

After climbing for around 1 hour you reach a flat plateau, from where a beautiful scenery is visible. The clouds were covering all the mountains and a distinctive layer of it could be seen.

Well the nature re energised us and we continued further. The trek further has steep rock patches.

After the rock patch; we climbed a ladder which was already fixed there and further steps built in olden days were to be climbed. After climbing the steps, there is a door on which a Lord Ganpati is carved in stone. The door was packed with stones, so it couldn't be crossed. We climbed the wall besides the door and continued our trek to reach caves of Alang. To reach caves we walked traverse, there was no further climbing but traverse walking. On one side there was big mountain and on the other valley, we were walking on edge leaning towards the right side, Lean towards right was the call.

We reached the caves at around 2 pm. The lunch was arranged in the cave by the villagers who had climbed as though a daily routine, and Alang climb was some sort of an accomplishment for us. The cave was big, it was kind of partitioned hall and as usual water is abundant on forts, a small tank of water was built besides the cave. We ate Roti and Pickle, with hot served rice, oh the food on these treks is just so awesome, a great contribution from villagers, also healthy. Some people took a nap inside the cave, some wandered around the fort and some engaged in discussions. Well I was the one sitting on the rock at the entrance gazing the view from cave, marvellous. There is dilapidated structure of fort, if further climbed up from the cave. Also walking ahead of the cave on the Forts flat plateau there are some 10 to 11 tanks and reservoirs of water in line. Climbing Madan and unexpected halt

The interesting and the thrilling part of treks starts now; done with lunch and well rested we move further to reach Madan, Reaching Madan from Alang is adventurous and actually tests the ability and trekking qualities of a trekker. First there is 70 feet Straight Rappelling. As we reached the rappelling spot a group of about 20 people was climbing; only one activity can happen through the 70 ft. rock patch. So naturally we had to wait and as it was difficult spot, the climbers were taking their sweet time. This was not anticipated rather cannot be. As we waited, a funny thing happened, the fort has lots of thorny plants and insects; one of our trekkers Shreeharsh was observing the climb and after sometime he came back and sat with us, the moment he sat down he had to get up, and went running ahead, we did not understand what happened, he again came and told us that an insect had bitten him as he sat. We were rolling out with laughter, this cheered everyone and made the moments lighter. To tell the truth Shreeharsh is a very good trekker and he too took it in a lighter note.

Finally after 1.5 hours of waiting, our group started rappelling. It was already evening, so the trek leaders decided that instead of climbing Madan on that day we would stay for the night in nearby cave. The rappelling in night was full of thrill. To reach the rappelling spot one has to climb down few stairs; as you start descending you notice that on one side there are rocks; and on the other valley. There is nothing to support if your balance is lost. But as the stairs are in good condition and there are hooks nailed into rocks, the rope is inserted through the hooks, and we by holding the ropes descended through stairs. There is small cave near the vertical rock patch to be rappelled. We waited there as one by one people were rappelling, some had already went down and making arrangements for the stay. One of the villagers was holding the feed for the rappel. And two of the trek leaders Sushant and Rashmi were helping people and explaining the technique of rappelling. As my turn came it was pitch dark only stars in the sky and tiny lights of villages down were visible. I already had experience of rappelling so I got ready with the equipment and rappelled down smoothly, still a little fear is always there in mind. The base of after rappelling was about 3 to 4 feet; and valley ahead. So we had to be very careful after rappelling not to just wander, but stay close towards rock. After all rappelled down, there was another steep patch of rock that need to be climbed down, but it couldn't be rappelled as the patch was uneven, one had to take the grip in the groves and descend.

Further there was a base and a cave situated some feet above from the base. The cave was spacious. The trek leaders had decided to stay here for the night. Down near the base; villagers were cooking food for some of us also joined for the cooking activity and helped in cooking the meal. We rested in cave, chatted with each other, some discussions became quite serious too, one of them was about what all regions can be considered into Mumbai, and is Navi-Mumbai Better than Mumbai; or Thane is better than Navi Mumbai. I took part initially than rested besides for a while. Cold breeze blew from outside.

Meanwhile we were served with soup, unexpectedly. The soup tasted heavenly, and soon the Khichadi followed. Khichadi and pickle, felt like home. Done with dinner we made sleeping arrangements. As everybody were not able to sleep comfortably in the cave, because other group of trekkers were also there, some of us (Sushant, Rashmi, Jyotsna, Sagar, Manoj and me) decided to sleep on the base of the cave. The base was long enough and ahead had steep slope and thorny plants. We put our sleeping mats and sheets on the base took our sleeping bags and gazed into the starry night. Making patterns from the stars and chatting about other treks and other stuffs, we fell asleep.

Some groups arrived in the early morning, the dreams broke and I got up from gazing into the stars of night to glaring into the star of day; the Sun. Well the people sleeping in cave also had very good sleep; so I hear, just few snoring sounds and little cramped up that’s all :P. As the dawn spread, everyone got up. We freshened, and made the breakfast the tea and patanjali noodles (Maggie not available). Got set, ready to move ahead and climb Madan. The Kulang was cancelled sadly, as reaching Madan would take time and we had to get back on the same day.

There is much of traverse to reach Madan. But again traverse as such on one side Rock and on the other valley, there is no patch in this trek where you feel you can easily cross it. One has to be always cautious and careful while trekking. So as we traversed we reached stairs that ascended towards a base from where there is 50 to 60 feet vertical Climb. Here also an unanticipated thin happened, another group was rappelling from the point that we had to climb. Again we had to wait fro around 2 hours to start our climb. But the spot where we were awaiting was provided us with distant views of mountains and villages that appeared tiny down the hill. So there was lot of scope for photos and selfies, we spent our time in posing for different shots.Well for amazing and awesome pics there is always Sumit; the professional photographer of the treks. His clicks capture the essence of treks.

Unexpected Halt

Finally the wait was over and our climb started. Tell you the truth felt pretty much like the climb in Lakshya Movie. Only that the climb was small but the base was also very narrow and ahead directly was the steep rocks down the valley. One by One we climbed, trekker’s Sakshi and Shrushti were little panicked, in general they are good trekkers but sometimes the fear gets stuck in the head. But they overcame it; only at the spot of rappelling and climbing they needed more encouragement and our trek leaders provided it to anyone and everyone in need. So as my turn came I was suggested to climb with bare foot, another technique if the sole is little big.

One of our trekkers Swapnil (we called him Bahubali because of his built); was helping to Pull in climb. Well till the point we could get grip and put our feet and hands in groves, the climb was manageable but at some spots which were totally flat, caught the hold of rope pull ourselves up with help from Swapnil. Manoj had initially helped for pulling people up during climb; he is another great experienced trekker and was encouraging and giving tips and techniques about the trek. He was the most active trekker in our group. It is this very thing that you meet people from different walks of life sharing same interests and have wise words, I like going on treks. His sheer enthusiasm and energy for treks is marvellous.

One by one we climbed and moved ahead towards top of Madan. As the vertical climb was done, we had to move still further; here we climbed on broken rock steps. From one point a beautiful view of Alang fort and its curvature can be seen.

On the top of Madan there are 3 ponds constructed in line. The villagers had already reached and cooking meal. The villagers are big support on the treks, even if they don’t lead you or even if they don’t trek with you, no trek cannot be completed without their help or direction. Again we were served with rice and dal; again unexpectedly with bhajiya; delicious and yummy. After having lunch, resting for very little while, roaming around the fort, we started descending.

Well climbing down the Madan, there was twinge in my stomach when I just looked down while descending. It was mixture of fear and awe. The scenic beauty, the picturesque horizon and mountains in ranges, nature is wonderful, it is infinite and we are very small and tiny and little in front of it. What is Life if one has never explored into it; I feel, what is life if one has never discovered the joy of discovering self in discovering nature?

The Kalsubai peak of Maharashtra is very clearly visible from Madan Fort. Now the rappelling from the point we had climbed. Well we waited as one by one people rappelled down. As we chatted, we were looking back at our trek and remembering the funny moments; well those are inexplicable in blogs or write ups and it has its situational flavour, I would just say we laughed a lot as the rappelling rope was being set up and awaited our turns. Vikram one of the trekker was the source of entertainment for all of us not just at this spot but for the whole trek. His witty timing of jokes would relieve the pressure of trekking.

Descending the Mountain

The descend was also quite difficult as one had to descend through slippery rocks. Basically water must be flowing through that path in rainy season. While descending too one had to be careful, where to place the foot as the rocks might not be fixed to the ground. One such incident happened with me, Before me two of the trekkers (Pranav and Datta) placed a foot on one of the big rocks and moved ahead, behind them as I set the foot onto the rock the rock slipped, I fell down and rock was going to fall on my foot, but fortunately Pranav held it instinctively, otherwise my foot could have been trapped on it. Pranav yet another trekker whom I became friends with and had discussions about trekking during our adventure.

It soon became dark and we had to light our torches. Everyone was coordinating with each other so as to le know the directions, of course the villagers were with us. Walking in the jungle in pitch dark with torches lit is another, thrilling experience of the trek.

We reached the farms and concrete road on the base of the fort at about 8 pm in the evening. We walked further where our traxes were parked. Back into the traxes we started our return journey to Kasara railway station. We reached Kasara by 10 pm. The last train to thane was at 10.30 pm.

In the train we were remembering the trekking moments. Surprisingly no one was sleepy. We reached Thane at around 12.30 pm. Some went ahead till Dadar. Many of us got down at Thane and separated our ways.

There were around 27 of us and I wouldn't count how many boys or girls. Because it didn’t matter our identity was and is of trekker irrespective of gender and at least for this trek. The trek came to an end on a happy and adventurous note. Once again it was a lifetime experience.

I couldn't name all in my experience of trek, but surely I remember everyone.

Small steps

It is a group founded by Sagar, Yogi, Sushant, Ravi, Prashant and Rashmi (about which I came to know in this trek only). The small steps is an adventure group, they have a purpose of taking people out of their comfort zone and leading them onto an adventurous path to explore nature and great forts. This time also quick decision and Management even though only two founders were leading could be observed. The decision about resting in nearby cave as it had become dark was significant, because the path ahead from there was tricky and risky.

Alang Fort: In Nashik district, in Western Ghats of Maharashtra.

Base Village: Ambevadi and Dudhavane. One can climb from both the villages we climbed from Dudhavane.

Madan Fort: In Same range.

Base Village: Ambevadi, we descended into Ambevadi village.

In the Realm of Harishchandra

The Fort.

Harishchandra Gad a vastly built fort in the Malshej Ghat of Maharashtra is an exotic place. It’s a huge fort with many spots of fascinating attraction and many mythical stories around it. The fort combines myth and reality and is wonder of nature. The fort is named after a renowned King Harishchandra; who after sacrificing his Kingdom had sent his wife and son in south. The wife and son had lived on this fort as servants.

It is one of the most difficult trek in Maharashtra and tests patience of a person. As a goal of taking people on adventurous path, Small Steps had planned this trek from Khireshwar-Tolarkhind route.

The other routes are Nalichi Vat which is more difficult than former and truly needs expertise in trekking and lots of stamina. The other route is from pachne village. It is quite easy and one reaches top in no time also scenic beauty along this route is great, with ponds and waterfalls on its way.

Journey till Base Village

Starting in the morning of Saturday from Thane station in Mumbai at 7, a private bus was arranged. We reached Ahmednagar district where we took a turn from Khubi Phata. As our route was from Khirshwar-Tolarkhind. We reached Khireshwar village in around 3 hrs. at 10 am. Khireshwar village is situated at the foothills of fort. The skyline view of the fort and hills is visible from here. Delicious breakfast of kande-Pohe was served ‘speciality of small steps.’ We got introduced to each other. For me a frequent trekker with Small Steps; there were many new faces. With introduction done we got set and ready for climbing the mountain.

The Trek
The trek from Tolarkhind is a difficult one, no sooner than we started ascending everyone felt breathless and tired. The cool breeze in midst of daylight was a relief. There are 7 hills that need to be crossed to reach the top. On the way ahead the villagers have set up huts that provide refreshments on every base. Believe me one needs them as you are exhausted. The refreshments energised us to continue ahead.

We were also carrying tents for camping; it added weight to our baggage. There are steep rock patches in between and also an opportunity for enthusiast climbers to climb them. Many of us did climb; the rocks had crevices to grip our hands. Others took safer way up. The mountain has abundant flora and fauna. Greenery is spread all over them. Amazing blossomed flowers also can be found on the way.

It took nearly 4 hours of trekking to cross the 7 hills to reach the top. We were divided into three groups with as usual Sagar leading, Chaitrali (also a frequent trekker with Small Steps) and me in between connecting the groups, and at the last Yogi with dawdling trekkers. After reaching top we had to walk for nearly one and half hours further to reach an ancient temple. We had started approximately at 10 am and reached temple at around 3 pm. Still Yogi’s group hadn’t come.

The exploring of fort and architectural Wonders.

The temple is carved from black stones a typical architecture from ancient India. It is temple of Shiv linga. Inside the temple there are 2 caves and 3 more small temples of other Gods. A Nandi is carved in front of Shiv linga at the back there are 2 caves and 3 water tanks. I have always said that the in the forts of Maharashtra this is a major trait; one finds abundant water supply from ponds, lakes and water cisterns and tanks. No temple is complete without Ganesh and so Ganesh sculpture is carved on one side of the temple and painted saffron. In front of temple there are 2 reservoir one small and

one big. These reservoirs were also built in olden times. The reservoir at one edge has a short wall and is carved inside with different deities.

If we walk further right to this temple and descend for a while one finds an amazing cave carved from in rock with a Shiv Linga at centre of it. It is filled with water till waist height. The water is perennial in it. The cave itself has four pillars of which 3 are broken and now is supported by just one. Here the myth of fort starts; it is said that 4 pillars represent 4 Yugas of Hindu Scriptures and as 3 are over they are broken when the 4^th breaks the last Yuga will end. Keeping aside the myth it is a wondrous cave and looks beautiful; the water inside is ice-cold and teeth chattering.

As Yogi’s group arrived; Sagar the lead took off with Chaitrali. Yogi and I waited till last group rested and had their lunch. It was around 4 in the evening. We started our journey to most awaited spot of the trek, ‘Konkan Kada.’ Walking further one arrives at a small heighted temple of Sage Vishwamitra. It is said that in that here he used to meditate.

As we walked for an hour or so Konkan kada came into our sight. We reached the very end. Konkan kada is an inexplicable place. It is a flat surface and shaped like a curvature. Vertically flat and has height of about 3000 ft above sea level. It is called Konkan Kada because from here you can view Konkan on other side. A view that exhibits personified nature and leaves your head spinning. To have a thrilling experience; we slept on our bellies and looked down, and the depth never ends. The villages far away seem tiny toys like. Activities like rappelling also take place here but strictly arranged by professionals. After watching for quite some time and not feeling fulfilled; we got up and had some tea sold by villagers. The selfie’s and photos followed as they always do. The tents had to be pitched. Sagar had reached earlier and pitched most of the tents with his group. We erected reaming few. It was around 7 pm.

Stay and Camping

The Fort has many caves, mostly people stay in caves during dry seasons. But we had brought tents and so had many other groups.

The night was covering sky under its shelter and the darkness was underway. Torches were getting lit up; many trekker groups were camping on Konkan Kada, so in the lights of torch one could see many tents pitched in circles. The villagers set up their huts also nearby in dry seasons. One peculiarity is that the villagers of base village or of fort are of great help during trekking. They live so simple life although having their own set of problems. Sometimes I wonder it will be so peaceful to live in such villages. Well not to digress into my personal trail of thoughts; the villagers provide meal and water.

But we had brought our own set of ingredients to prepare food, the locals gave us their utensils and materials to use. Some of us who were good at cooking stayed in the hut and cooked the meal. Rest of us set the campfire and near our tents. We actually tried to roast potatoes on the campfire, but only few succeeded to properly roast it. After some time meal was ready. A great Masala rice was served; it was delicious and tasted awesome served with pickle and I remembered home. We ate stomach full.

Done with the dinner we retired to camping site. Some of us went to Konkan Kada, it was a cool night and cold breeze was flowing from kada. Engaging in our own activities, at last we slept at around 12 or 12.30 am. The tents provided a warmth from outside cold. Keeping in mind my last experience of Rajgad to Torna trek where; I had brought a shawl with me. I was awake by 4.30 am and so were many; campfire which had extinguished was lit up again.

Now the plan was to trek to other great spot Taramati point and watch the sun rise. Taramati is a name of the wife of King Harishchandra. We were taking warmth from the campfire as it was chilling in the early morning; after sometime we started our trek. Some decided to enjoy the sleep as it was Sunday morning. The trek to Taramati is ahead of Konkan Kada parallel. We walked for few minutes and then ascended, and reached to another plateau, again walked and again ascended another small hill, again a flat surface and again a hill. This continued for 6 such hills. In between I felt tired and thought of not continuing, as the ascending patches were steep. But in our group; a married couple had come and they had a young kid of 7 to 8 years. He was enthusiastic about trekking from the start. He had been in lead’s group. Now also he was not walking but running and jumping, taking inspiration from him, I thought I have come this far and should continue and reach the top. So finally after 6 ascensions we reached top at the Taramati point the saffron flag was furling further hoisted near a Buruj. The sky was uncovering from the shelter of night, Sun before rising had spread a saffronish mixed with blue colour gradually the sun was rising. Down on the earth we could see small villages and river flowing by; hills and mountains all around us. It was the perfect beginning of the day; we were on the top of the mountain, at bottom calm and serene river was flowing sun had risen announcing his appearance, birds flying away from nest and flowers blooming in his direction. What a picturesque view. You only see such things in paintings. Well click, click and click many cameras captured the scenes, even the cell phones were out and clicks being taken; soon the trend of selfies followed and the dp’s for social networking sites. With lots of such clicks we started descending back to camp site. The descension did not take much time and soon we had reached our camp site near Konkan Kada. We packed the tents and our bags. We were ready to climb down now. Having a little breakfast and some tea from villagers, the trek back towards base started.

We reached the temple and the arched cave of Shiv Linga, from nowhere everyone decided to jump into the lake of cave, and I joined too, my teeth chattered as soon as the cold water hit me and for a moment I couldn’t bring words out of my mouth. It was shivering but after few minutes the initial coldness went away. Plunging into the water and swimming for a while, we came back. I felt great calmness after that, all the exhaustion, tiredness and aching went away, I felt refreshed and re energised. Changing into dry clothes we continued climbing down.

The descend was steady and fast, around 10 am in the morning we started. Again the same pattern of grouping followed, while descending now knowing everyone we chatted and sang song and made fun of each other remembering the moments of camping and the night spent. Refreshments were available frequently from villagers. It took about 3 hours to descend; reached around at 1 to 1.30 pm.

After reaching the base village and looking at the skyline of fort every one of us had sense of accomplishment. Again the last group was yet to come. Until then we had our lunch at Khireshwar village same place from where we had started. After that we put ourselves under a tree and relaxed, so serene it felt.

Till the last group arrived and had lunch it was tea time. So our trek ended on the tea note.

Back journey in the bus was lively no one slept; maybe tea’s effect. The journey completed in talking with each other, sharing of pics, sharing of past experiences and etc.

Finally at around 7 pm in the evening we reached Thane station and from here every one bidding adieu dispersed. It was an end to great joy ride and thrilling adventure.

Small Steps

Group of five (Sagar, Yogi, Ravi, Prashant and Sushant). They created Small steps to take people out from their comfort zone and give them experience of adventure. They have amazing coordination and management. Being a frequent trekker one could easily trust them with the trek and feel secure about trekking. In this trek only Sagar and Yogi were present and even though being only 2 they managed batch of 35, it shows their strength of organising and event.

From the Plateaus of Prabal to Pinnacle of Irshal.

So another weekend and another great adventure planned by 'Small steps.' A trek from Prabalgad to Irshalgad. Trekking in the mountains of Sahyadris has become a hobby for me now and with great friends from Small Steps I enjoy more and cherish every moment.

This trek from Prabalgad to Irshalgad is a trek organized rarely and not with group of 40 people.
It’s an adventurous trek with dense forest on all sides. The Prabalgad was built as a watch tower for Panvel-Kalyan region. It has a huge area nearly about 8 square km. Besides Prabalgad there is Kalvantin Durg with valley in between. The shape formed is like impulse of a triangular wave and then constant from second peak.

Ascend to Prabal Machi.

We reached the base village which is called Thakurwadi at around 5.30 pm and started ascending which took about one and half hour to reach Prabal machi, which is a base to the fort. There is a small village situated where they provide food and shelter to trekkers.

The night trek was fascinating as after sometime it went completely dark and we were under starry night. The torches were lit some had even brought head lamps and ahead we went. Trek to Prabal machi is easy, it has normal rocky patches and some slippery slopes but none too difficult as the treks I had done before. Basically it’s a walk. As we reached Prabal machi everyone had enjoyed the trek and were little tired. We all started interacting with each other and intermixing into groups sharing our own stories and experiences of past trek. The village people had built a proper dining place to provide meals; as we started getting hungry the meal was ready. So the Vegetarians and Non vegetarians were divided and as a vegetarian I followed veg group, the meal was awesome; the hot rice bhakris and alu bhaji with rassa is a wonder treat after trekking add to it with achaar and papad you have feeling of home!

Stay at Prabal Machi

The view from Prabal machi is awesome; the tiny city lights are visible and somewhere flares of certain company can be viewed. We all sat on the ground in the cold breeze and were enjoying; as usual the singing of Bollywood songs followed. Then we retired to the quarters that are built for resting. The quarters has a large open space in front (aangan), we decided to sleep outside in pleasant climate; thus we took our shawls and mats set them up for sleeping. Actually nobody wanted to sleep early many people were trolling around, selfie’s, funny pics and dp’s everything was going, finally after sometime everyone retired to some sleep and as were deep in dreams dogs started shouting around at the exact moment that we were supposed to get up (3.30 am); and everyone’s alarms went going. Eventually in 45 min everyone was awake; after getting ready and having some breakfast and by the way thank god this time there were toilets and bathrooms near the quarters otherwise nature calls and the forest is your home..! :P.

Prabalgad to Irshalgad

The journey to Irshalgad started at around 5:15 am. One of the village person we called him mama guided us till the end of Prabalgad (his stamina was the best being the local person that too with wearing simple chappals). It was still dark and it was going to take around 2 hours to cross the Prablagad area. Prabalgad is big fort area wise and we had to cross it and then go round about it to get into the region of Irshalgad. The trek was as such we never had to descend completely to the ground; cutting across the hills and forest we were going to reach Irshalgad. It was just walking around the forests for most of the part; with in between waterfalls; but many of them had little water as it hadn’t rained much. Everyone was a fast trekker in this group so we completed one patch of Prablagad in about One hour which takes around two and half. We came across a Lord Ganesh temple and had some hot breakfast (delicious poha);

took some rest and started the journey again; and to mention the breakfast in large box was carried by one of the group leaders in his rucksack. The forest was dense with different flora and fauna around. (No wild animals but wild insects can be found). The forest looked just like Forbidden forest of Harry Potter if one can imagine, big old trees with branches as thick as stems towering above us and sunlight coming from slits formed between the leaves of trees at the top;

the anthills looked like small castles, gives you a sense how hardworking and creative ants are..!

Walking further one reaches kala Buruj (watch tower) of the fort. But to reach Irshalgad we had to take different route. Some people went ahead to see the watch tower; so till that time we again took rest.

The way to Irshalgad is a little descend from Prabalgad the route is clearly visible as there is a really big old tree that separates it from the way to watch tower. As we started descending Prablagad we came down through stone steps that may have been built in the same period as the fort. But a little further and the stones were loosely held to ground, so we had to be careful, we were slipping through the soil and making the stones roll down. This part of the trek was little adventurous and also tiring. The leaders of the group asked us to walk cross foot so that we will get grip and won’t fall down; oh that worked well many people got confident about getting down with that trick. The descension was for about 45 minutes, the trees were mostly wild banyan trees and hence had roots upside down. So it had a feeling of Mowgli’s Jungle; as we too were taking the support of those roots while trekking. After sometimes we came across a waterfall, refreshed ourselves and started again. As we walked further a lush green farm came into view from where we could see the pinnacle of Irshalgad which was still far away; but till then everyone was like “we have to walk till there OMG.”

With the encouragement of group leaders everyone just moved forward without thinking of how much more we have to walk. As it was the walking round the mountain we could chat around more with each other. While trekking we had discussions on various topics. We had one guy who was a singer and also had been to Indian Idol but for some Personal reasons withdrew from it; also he is a great cook and works in VFX; wow great you never know whom you will meet in these treks. Once a CEO of some well-known firm had also trekked with us. We further descended to a flat plateau from at the centre from which on one side we could see Prablagad and on the other Irshalgad and down there was a river flowing parallel to the mountains. The scenic beauty was breath-taking. The huge Prabalgad looked like a giant rook; we were surprised to realize that we had walked the whole area of it.

We were on the ridge now and could straight up see Irshalgad. The ridge has wild Banana trees with big leaves that actually provided some shade; as at this point the clouds had cleared and the sun was shining bright that too at the noon hour. The ridge was also a little slippery, so had to walk slowly on it. The trees around the ridge can be give you grip to hold but some had leaves like blades and pointed spores on them; which can give cuts on skin, many did get cuts on their palms and fingers. These leaves are velvety and so you don’t realize at once. In this patch people were really tired and their energy levels had come down to 50% because of sun and sweat. But somehow to reach our destinations we carried ourselves. As the ridge ended we had to climb down for several minutes and again climb up to enter in Irshalgad area. So we descended and ascended into Irshalgad The ascension was vertical and had to climb with taking grip of hands on rocks.

Climbing a further we entered Irshalgad. As we climbed up into the Irshal the lush green farms and trees welcomed us we sat underneath the green earth and rested for a while. Different flowers were blooming in them just like our Bollywood movies. The fort was clearly visible now. But people were thinking more about the meal that was going to be served after some time. So walking further and the pinnacle of Irshal constantly with us; it was like Pinnacle was seeing us rather than we seeing the pinnacle; we reached Irshalwadi a village in the fort area. The Irshalgad is not a fort as such, more of watch tower from which the region could be viewed. Now the time for pinnacle but as I had already visited the top of the fort in my earlier trek I decided I would stay back in the village. Many people stayed back. Few with one of the group leader went ahead to the tower. Please read to climb the tower you need trekking equipment, it is vertical climb and quite dangerous the other members of our group also went till the tower and not climbed it actually. At the top near the tower there is a Rock which carved like a gate which has a needle hole in centre and two Rocks like poles are naturally built at two sides of it. Making a shape like |0|. There are several naturally formed water cisterns in the rocks, while climbing to the needle hole of Irshalgad. The water is cold and it is percolated from the rocks.

One of the group leader had directly come to Irshal with lunch; wow what a management! We were served with mutter “Paneer and Puris” it was heaven meal. The meal was obviously limited but no qualms about it. It was about 3 pm till we had finished our lunch and were waiting for the people who had went up. We rested till then. As the other group came we started descending and they had their lunch.

While descending the climate was awesome, cold breezes, little rains and green earth on all sides and at the bottom one could see the Morbe Dam. The climbing down of the fort did not feel like trekking at all. Descend was easy and without realizing we had reached the base village. The bus was waiting for us organized by the trek group. We put our bags and waited for rest of them to come down. Till then we watched the game of marbles that village children were playing also participated in it.

We had started our trek from Thakurwadi a base village at Prabalgad and we were now at the base village of Irshalgad. It was a great experience in many ways the trek gave us our first time experiences like best ever “Jungle trek”.

Small steps is group formed by Sagar, Yogendra, Ravi, Prashant and Sushant. They had named their group Small steps because during treks to cover long distances it is generally asked to take small steps and also for safety purpose. I had in my previous blog described about them and their great coordination to hold the trekkers together. The specialty of this group is that, it never feels like you are trekking with some organized group but with friends that you know from long time. I would like to appreciate Small steps for their time management & caring of every trekker and perfect coordination. Thank you Small Steps once again for a great experience.

When Sahyadri Comes Alive…..!!

It is said that Sahyadri’s of Maharashtra are queer than Himalayan Ranges. When you are in Sahyadri one need to watch every step otherwise you may get lost and end up nowhere far from the place you are supposed to be. But that doesn’t take away the beauty of it. Ranges personify beauty in monsoon. They cover up with lush green trees and waterfalls falling at every turn. The Scenic beauty is picturesque, as if someone has painted it on canvas. Thus our journey began in these great Ranges of Sahyadri on the two Forts built by great King Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. These two forts actually began his journey of establishing Swaraj against Adilashi and Mughals. The two forts were very first to be captured by King Shivaji and his companions for life called Mavale.

So Our Trek started from base village Gunjavane of Rajgad. We had a nice hot meal there, villagers provide the meal at reasonable rate. Trek from here takes you to Chor Darwaja of Rajgad. This route is little difficult as there are steep patches in between, but if you are up for adventure then go for it.
As we started climbing we were already in dense forest. Trees were all along aside us and nothing else. Wherever we looked we had a sense of wonder. As we climbed up, we were surrounded by dense fog, fog that sometimes even makes person in front of you invisible. Somewhere as we were climbing the fog cleared and it was surprising to realize how much height we have covered. From there the huts in villages looked like tiny pieces, and the water that is flowing like a line.

There are railings constructed at some very steep rocks, so it helps you to climb. The spot of railings tells that you are closer to fort. A little further, or say a little higher and the Chor Darwaja came into sight. It is built exactly as it says, very small in height, we had to duck to enter it. The purpose of it was to escape if enemy attacks on the fort. Also one other purpose was; the informers of King used to come through this door. Thus we entered the fort and as we walked into it a beautiful lake built by King Shivaji came into view ‘Padmavati Lake’. The lake is always filled with fresh water and is never dried out. It is well constructed and has rectangular shape also it has steps to descend and fetch water. It is advised not to jump into lake as it is deep also water is very cold.

There was dense fog on the fort. As we crossed the lake we came across few stonewall rooms which were built in those days. They might be living rooms or storage rooms, purpose is not known. There is temple of ‘Padmavati Devi’ in front of these stonewall rooms.

The temple was also built by Shivaji Maharaj. Straight in front of temple is Saibai, Shivaji’s first and most beloved wife’s Samadhi. We had started around 3 pm and reached the fort around 6 pm. It was heavily raining. The temple can accommodate around 60 people, also the rooms built in temple can accommodate people for staying overnight but they leak and are not maintained properly in rainy season. We stayed in temple for the night. It was tempting to go outside for a walk on the fort as it is so greatly built but because of dense fog and heavy raining the group that led us advised us to stay in temple only. Although we had fun in temple, we did aarti in the evening at around 7 pm, shared ghost stories which really scared hell out of some people :P, some also had deep conversation about King Shivaji and his times, it is hard not speak about him when you are trekking on his fort and staying there. There are some beautiful paintings hanged on the wooden columns of temple and Marathi shlokas about King Shivaji and his first son Sambhaji are written on it. Again the villagers provided us diner, and after that we immediately slept as next day a long trek was to be done. So we slept in biting cold, at least I did; forgot to pack my shawl. Next day we got up at 5 in the morning had hot tea, warm breakfast and packed up to enjoy best part of the trek. There is a Well besides temple with fresh water in it, we filled our water bottles from there. Wow imagine the resources that were planned in those days..!

Rajgad to Torna.

So now comes the most exciting part of the trek Rajgad to Torna….!! In morning around 6 we started onwards Torna. Whilst walking we got to watch remains of Sanjeevani Maachi, and from that door you exit Rajgad.

This trek is full of adventures, there’s rock climbing, descending, steep slopes, zigzag ways, narrow pathways and sometimes you slip on muddy earth Oops..!!. It became difficult as we moved forward, but we had great organizers with us; guiding all the way through. As we started descending Rajgad there are remains of big rock walls guarding the Fort. As we descended further there were steep rock patches and the view in front was awesome. You are in midst of Sahyadri ranges with mountains on every side, waterfalls falling from them some from very high altitude. After descending Rajgad you come across a tar road that separates two mountain ranges on which forts are built. Now we started ascending for Torna, but to reach Torna we had to cross 15 to 20 hills till we reached Torna,

there was ascension and descension, again and again. While trekking here we saw endless variety of plants and trees, on some of which flowers were blossoming, some having thorns, some plants had so strong branches that we used to hold them and climb. We came across few straight ridges on some of the hills, the wind on these ridges blew our minds, and the rains slammed us across, because you are not walking under the clouds, but besides them, right through them.

After sometime the fog cleared and we felt as if nature had come alive Sahyadris have come alive, a breath taking beauty that leaves you speechless. We felt as if nature was in conversation with us, telling us tales of its existence over the years and inviting us to experience it. The Sahyadris you realize are not mountain ranges that throw you off the cliff, but are built as if to guide you and take you in its arms to give you sense of wonder. While looking at its great beauty I realized how much time I have spent worrying about unnecessary things and how much can be achieved in life without such qualms and how much nature is left to be explored and understood.

We were tired after such long trek but this ridge boosted our energy and the further hills were calling us to complete our journey, to explore them and give them a chance to show their wonders. And so we continued. Every hill showed us vast amount of nature and gave a spectacular view of Sahyadri Ranges.

Ascend to Torna.

Finally the watch tower (Buruj) of Torna came into sight, the surface is flat at the base of watch tower.

We thought adventure was over, but it wasn't; now came the real thrilling part of our trek. The rope that our organizer were carrying was to be utilised and that time had come. We walked further the tower and there comes one rock patch which need to be climbed.

Actually it can be climbed without rope if you are a good trekker but our organizers did not wanted to take any chances. So the rope was put and one by one we climbed it. As we climbed the rope we had to further climb the rocks and at one point we were standing literally on a point. This exercise was done one at a time, and up ahead we stood on another watch tower. But the trek was still not over yet. We passed the lush green fields of plants planted on the mountain, walked further and arrived at yet another rock patch. Again with use of rope we climbed and stood on a very narrow ridge. As we were standing the view from up was unimaginable, the river was flowing; cutting across the ranges at the base and going into the villages. It looked exactly like we drew the picture of mountain and river as school kids. Finally Darwaja of Fort came into view from the misty fogs. Entering it we walked further to reach the temple of Torna Devi. We had started at 6 in the morning and reached Torna at 5.30 in the evening.

Descend from Torna.

We had our meal in the temple again provided by villager’s who carry it up to the fort. Torna is the highest fort in Pune region and in 2^nd highest in Maharashtra, it was chilling outside also the rains were slashing hard. Immediately we started descending as we had to reach before getting dark. While descending we came across water tanks, built from those days filled our bottles and started climbing down. There were railings constructed on rock patches, it becomes easy to descend. After the rock patch descend is quite easy mostly walking down. But there are 2 crossroads where, one could take wrong route and end up somewhere else. Same thing happened with us at the last crossroad me and my friend actually went on right route, as we had seen on of the group leaders going from there. But few people took the other route ended on a constructed cement road, they thought as they have reached road they are right so they signalled us with torch as it was already becoming dark. We then again went back. It was a confusing situation. But the group leaders in the back arrived and then it was decided that some will take cement route and some will follow other as both routes intersect further at the base village. Finally we reached the base village Velhe. It was end to a lifetime experience….!

We were 37 of us lead by 5 people of organizers and it was amazing effort put by every one of us to make this trek a wonderful and adventurous experience. In the group two girls were first time trekkers and the trek is actually not recommended for first time trekkers. But with the amazing encouragement shown by everyone and especially by the organizers they were moving forward; also the climate and the all around beauty of mountains inspired them to carry on and accomplished the trek successfully. At the end they were happy about coming to the trek and experiencing it with all of us. Truly if one can accomplish such a difficult trek in first go; it would feel easy to expedite on other such treks.

Organizers – Small Steps

The group of 'Small Steps' consisting of five individuals(Sagar, Yogendra, Prashant, Ravi and Sushant) are like five fingers of hand, palm when closed becomes fist leaving no gap in between, beholding the trekkers with them all the time. One leads in front, one at the very back and three in between, interchanging their positions as and when required. They guide on every step and are not some sort of high handed experts that pretend to know everything; but interact with you as friends and make the experience of trek most enjoyable. Also they boost your confidence and encourage you. In my various treks with them; they have befriended me and now consider me as their part. They constantly take feedback from the trekkers to improve upon if anything needs to be. At the end you feel; you have enjoyed, got thrilled, had an adventure and finally had a sense of accomplishment.

Cost of trek with Small Steps: 1800 per person (included bus from Panvel to Rajgad and back to Panvel from Torna, 3 meals of both the time and 1 breakfast)

Rajgad: 1318 meters above sea level (4250 feet)

Torna: 1405 meters above sea level (4600 feet)

Gunjavane Village (base village at Rajgad): 60 km from Pune.

Velhe Village (base village at Torna): 45 km from Pune.

Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee – A Leader who transformed India.

25^th December 2014 marks the 90th birthday of India’s one of the most respected and admired leader, Shree Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Albeit he has been aloof for a while from Indian Politics now, His is the face that one will never forget. In a list of people that inspires every generation Atalji’s name will be the prominent one. He was an astute politician, a pan-India leader after Indira Gandhi, a poet whose words touched the heart and mind subtly, and a magnificent orator who would charm even his political opponents.

Such was his oratory skills and such was his debating capabilities that even our first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru once said that “this young man will one day become the PM of India”, and he did,

not once but three times until his party received the full fair opportunity to govern the country for 5 years.

He was an exuberant speaker who would entice everyone into his thoughts. He was a connoisseur of diverse and multi-party parliamentarian system of India. He was a persevering figure with an efficacy for his decision but also he never looked despondent after failure.

Shree Atal Bihari Vajpayee was a Member of Parliament for almost 50 years without even tiniest of stain on his political life and remains so.

He began his career as a journalist; .He entered into Politics drawing inspiration from Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee. He belonged to RSS(Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) from early years of his life. After spending 40 years in active politics and being the member of parliament, he became the Prime Minister of India in 1996, unfortunately just for 13 days, but it was like the fate had decided for him to be the Prime Minister, so again he ascended on PM’s chair in 1998 and lastly in 1999 till 2004.

But in those 6 years of his government though India faced many troubles, many problems nationally, internationally with a visionary like him the country progressed as such never before. Belonging to the party which has a perceptive Right Wing face, he always underwent scrutiny from his political opponents although he was well respected across the party lines.

He also shared friendship with many leaders belonging to different political parties.Prime Minister Narasimha Rao sent him as a Head of the Delegation to the Human Rights Commission Meeting at Geneva in 1993, even though he was a leader of opposition then. In his life he was part of many parliamentary delegations right from the start, first being in 1965. He also became Foreign Minister during Janata Party government from 1977 to 1979 after Emergency. He was the first person to deliver a speech to the United Nations General Assembly in Hindi for which he was acknowledged and widely appreciated.

His achievements as a Prime Minister have no other match. Within just a month of taking up the office,India conducted a nuclear test for which he received applaud within the country but was criticized internationally especially by U.S.A and Japan. But this did not stop him, he very well took care of foreign affairs, and explained India’s position about becoming a nuclear state which had purpose of having a credible deterrent for its defense .On economic front he continued the economic liberalization initiated by his predecessor P.V Narasimha Rao, and then Finance Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. He enhanced it, gave it new directions and India witnessed highest economic growth during his tenure. He made India Food grain exporter, a major-outsourcing country and enriched the country with over billion dollar foreign exchange reserves. Infrastructure development was the cornerstone of his governance. The Golden Quadrilateral and Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna are the two pillars of it. Even after criticism of Nuclear Test he extended his hand to foreign nations to improve relations and how India could contribute to development of the world. He also made his stand clear about India always being on the side of Peace. The improvement in foreign relation is very much evident by the fact that after 22 years the then President of United States Mr. Bill Clinton visited India. Also a fact needs to be taken note of Shree Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the only foreign P. M to address the constituent assembly of United States in September 2000. India also established a great strategic and military relations with Israel, continues to do so. Tibet was recognized as a part of China and China recognized Sikkim as a part of India during his tenure. Many educational reforms were also put in place, Sarv Shikshan Abhiyan was launched by him.He took under many expeditions, such as Chandrayan programme, linking rivers to solve irrigation problems, speedy communication system and establishing 'Sagar Mala' to connect 4000 kms of coastline.

During his tenure country also went through few predicaments. The first one being Kargil War, well everybody knows the history about it. The Strong Military of India stood up to the task and India defeated Pakistan in Kargil. The Hi-jack of a Plane, infamous Kandahar episode, once again with strong leadership India emerged out of it. The Parliament attack that terrified the country. But the stand of our leader was clear and it was Peace. The Gujarat Riots, in 2001 is one dark spot, at this point he wanted to resign, but later was convinced by his colleagues not to. After the Kargil India never tried to aggravate itself towards its adversaries. Rather Shree Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the P.M who initiated peace talks with our neighbors, whenever and wherever he saw the scope for it.He was a firm decision maker.

But in 2004 even after so much progress the verdict of people was not in his party’s favor. But he was never disheartened by it; he accepted the defeat with full responsibility and in 2005 because of health constraints resigned from active politics.

The fact remains that during the period of Shree Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s governance India uplifted itself in development process. He is the leader who in every sense transformed India.

A Statesman par excellence, a Visionary, a person with utmost integrity, an extraordinary orator and a poet from heart. Vajpayee describes his poetry in his words “My poetry is a declaration of war, not an exordium to defeat. It is not a defeated soldier’s drumbeat of despair, but a warrior’s will to win. It is not a dispirited voice of dejection but the steering shout of Victory."
I congratulate him on his birthday for receiving country's highest civilian award. A true 'gem' has received 'Bharat Ratna'

Atal Bihari Vajpayee will remain an inspiring figure for present and many generation to come.

Curiosity

"The first and simplest emotion which we discover in human mind is curiosity" – Edmund Burke. Indeed How true…!! , right through the Ages people have tried to define life, but something which always has been the aspect of definition is curiosity, the reason behind defining life itself is curiosity about it.
Ironically Curiosity is one distinctive character which every person shares, how far we exercise it, is a matter of personal concern, but something that drives us is curiosity. Every emotion that humans are capable of expressing has an underlying part of curiosity attached to it. Every great person that has lived on this earth has quoted importance of curiosity in our lives. Right from the childhood to an old age, in whatever direction we move largely depends on this quality of curiousness. In the 21^stcentury technology oriented world this aspect, quality or emotion has become more and more discernible. The discoveries the innovations the inventions are nothing but outcomes of curious minds.
I really feel that even the scientists are more driven by curiosity than science itself. Curiosity develops interest, interest develops choices, and the choices that we make, makes us. If we really want to lead a driven life, a passionate life than we have to be curious. Everything in the world is driven by this great natural, innate sense or force. The world revolves around this, and there would be hardly any person that disagrees with it.
Imagine what world would be like without it, it would be like a body without a soul, a mind without thoughts, and life without goal. Something that each and every one of us must always nurture is curiosity, I wonder how one would live without it. As Albert Einstein once said "Never lose the Holy Curiosity".
So Be Curious.

Acting by Choice

Sitting across the table, gazing out of the window, with a coffee mug in my hand sometimes I feel I am thinking something deep, philosophical. How my life is taking turns, how it has come to this, failures, success, happy moments, sad moments, terrible, terrifying, well and many more verbs and adjectives. But at the end I realize all I do is measuring my life in terms of adjectives that do not mean anything in far above of everything where there is just eternity and nothing else. Why do we do that, why do we try to measure everything that happens to us, why can’t we just live as life goes day by day, hour by hour, minute by minute and second by second. As said in Bhagwad Geeta by Lord Krishna just do your Work, just Act Right, and don’t think of whether you will succeed or fail. Well at the end of the trail of thoughts I feel stupid, I feel idiot to have thought all those things, because life does not change JUST by thinking, It changes when you act, when you make decisions.

But again one can’t stop thinking; one must not stop thinking because sometimes that is what makes us sane person. I always remember this one little thing; I travel by local trains in Mumbai extensively. I travel to my office daily, while returning I always find few poor children begging in that particular boogie, always the same ones. It’s true if you’re a regular traveler in Mumbai locals on any one route you may often find same poor people begging every day, it’s a fact! So coming back these small little children beg every day and I watch them, observe them, frankly speaking I sometimes give them money and sometimes I don’t. But they move me. There’s a twinge of pain I feel every time when I see them. I just can’t imagine how they live, with few coins everyday what do they eat, what goals they can have. What ambitions they can achieve. What possibly is there life!!!! For some people it may be mundane thing but for me every day it is a painful experience.

Now when I juxtapose my situation and this situation , how do I even have a right to have those hypocritical fancy philosophical thoughts of measuring life’s parameter when there are people in this world who don’t even have privilege of sitting and thinking, who have to beg for their food, who have to beg for shelter. Then I think we have been delinquent in upbringing such struggling people as a society. Sometimes I just can’t get acquiesce to the idea that I have to live my life and certain underprivileged class of people will have to live there’s. We as a society or I as a person hopes that someday there will be a balance in society or such class of people will surely get help. But then sometimes HOPE is just amother fancy word.

Unless we inculcate on minds of one another that unless we stand up and help, that unless we as a society make decision that something needs to be done, I feel nothing will change. There has to be some conscious effort from us rather than just blaming the governance and government for it. Envisaging that “everything will be fine” picture at the end does not change present day's fact. I feel that is the essence of ACTION as above mentioned lesson from Bhagwad Geeta. Yes you don’t worry about results, don’t expect them but it is our choice what work we do, what actions we take, decisions we make.

With this trail of memory I go back to the work I was doing. You know as they say in French c’est la vie, and life goes on. But I believe someday we have to change, we must; at least I will, by making right decision; right choice.
