Description
Tallinn's Old Town is exceptionally well preserved in part because historical economic scarcity limited large-scale renewal: modern grids did not overwrite the medieval street and plot system, and later facade updates retained medieval load-bearing structures. Over time, continued use and conservation have amortized material costs, making the area physically cost-effective at a citywide scale. Socially, however, the Old Town has become expensive and increasingly detached from local life, shaped by comprehensive protection (from 1966), post-1990s privatization and neoliberal reforms, and the growth of tourism and commercialization. The competition frames this tension--low long-term physical cost versus high social cost--as its central problem.

Trolls in the Park is an international open-air art exhibition that has been held in Metropolitan Zenpukuji Park in Suginami-ku since 2002 under the theme of “encountering art in daily life” rather than in a museum. Since 2013, the event has expanded from Zenpukuji Park into the surrounding neighborhood and JR Nishiogikubo Station area, while also developing a range of expressive forms that include installation, performance and projects that uncover the history of the local area.

A formerly inaccessible industrial zone is set to become a modern, accessible urban district in the coming years, following the example of other European harbour redevelopments--familiar in concept, yet unique in character.
Public Ports Company, together with the Capital City of Bratislava, announce an international masterplanning competition to develop an urban proposal for the transformation of the Winter Harbour in Bratislava. The competition is organised by the Metropolitan Institute of Bratislava and is a two‑stage, open, and anonymous process.
