HHMI-Undergraduate Research Ethics Cases - University of Delaware: The three case studies briefly described below were written for use with undergraduates who are beginning researchers. Teaching research ethics to novice researchers is important but also challenging. In particular, there are many ethical issues related to the transition from the classroom laboratory to the research laboratory. Student perceptions of acceptable behaviors differ for the two environments as has been documented by Del Carlo and Bodner (2004). Arkright-Keeler and Stapleton (2007) provide some useful resources for teaching research ethics. Mabrouk (2007) offers a template for teaching ethics. Another important article in this area is by Wright (1998) in which various types of research malpractice are presented in terms of undergraduate laboratories.

Lincoln Park Architectural Photographs: The Lincoln Park Architectural Photographs consist of 200 historical buildings in Chicago's Lincoln Park Community, and include images of several buildings that are designated landmarks. Wanda Harold, a sociologist in DePaul University's Sociology Department, photographed these buildings in 2000, and identified each with architectural style and location. This photography project linking social ecology with urban architectural design was funded with a grant from the Lincoln Park Community Research Initiative. Digitization of the photographs was made possible in part through a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant, in association with the office of the Secretary of State Jesse White and the Illinois Digital Archives. Original photographs are held in DePaul's Special Collections and Archives Department.

History and Vision | Salvadori Center: There is an ongoing struggle to meet the needs of diverse learners. Teachers continually search for methods of creating enriching and stimulating learning environments and experiences for children. Closing the achievement gap is a priority. However, educational reforms tend toward providing greater constraints on teachers and classrooms by using rote practices and standardized testing. Math and science education in particular, is taught in a rigid manner that restricts learners’ ability to solve problems and think critically. As curricula and assessments become more standardized, teachers have fewer opportunities to develop project-based and interdisciplinary educational experiences for their students, even though current educational and psychological research points to these methods as ‘best practices’ for student learning and achievement. In 1976, Columbia University Professor Mario Salvadori (1907-1997) took up a challenge from the New York Academy of Sciences to improve the teaching of math and science in our middle schools.

UC Davis Quantitative Biology Courses: Undergraduate lab series designed to familiarize students with using computer models to answer biochemical questions. Ideally, this lab would be taught as a supplement to a concurrent lecture course. Students are assumed to have completed one year of undergraduate calculus. Topics include acid-base chemistry, Gibbs free energy, Michaelis-Menten kinetics, enzyme inhibition, hemoglobin, and the Bohr effect. Math skills used include graphing (2-D and 3-D), algebra, logarithms, and numerical solutions to systems of equations. Some of these modules may be useful in a general chemistry or enzymology course. Each module has one or more background modules (mini-modules) associated with it. Details can be found on the individual module pages. With the exception of "Introduction to Mathcad", the modules are designed to operate more or less independently of one another. So the order given below can be changed to accommodate teaching preferences.

HHMI Lecture Demonstrations: 2010-2011 marks our sixth year creating large-scale demonstrations for introductory biology lectures. As you can see from the photo to the left, students in the back need the demonstrations to be physically large in order to see them. These are called "Garage Demos" because we make them from standard materials found in our garages. Short videos of the demonstrations done in class are posted on YouTube for students to re-view. We found the demonstrations helpful not only for teaching but also for increasing the creator's understanding of the processes modeled.
