The Teacher's Corner - Lesson Plans, Worksheets and Activities: We have been having another great year of collaboration projects! The collaboration projects are learning activities that provide collaboration between two or more classrooms. The participating classrooms will be from various locations around the world, will use the Internet to interact with one another and will be working on a similar topic for a specific length of time. Using the Internet students and teachers will share their activities, findings and reflections. In addition to student collaboration, teachers will also be provided with the necessary tools to collaborate with one another. Registration for our most recent project is closed. Feel free to visit the "Showcase" page for "What's at the End of the Rainbow?" to view student data.

The National Library of Medicine's Visible Human Project: The Visible Human Project is an outgrowth of the NLM's 1986 Long-Range Plan. It is the creation of complete, anatomically detailed, three-dimensional representations of the normal male and female human bodies. Acquisition of transverse CT, MR and cryosection images of representative male and female cadavers has been completed. The male was sectioned at one millimeter intervals, the female at one-third of a millimeter intervals.

Turnover at this level is higher than it is at both the elementary and high school levels, but the teachers who stick around tend to do so because they’re dedicated, determined, and maybe just a little bit crazy.

Small Documents Gallery, NMAH: In April 1863, two years after the outbreak of the Civil War, Amanda Akin (1827– 1911) journeyed from her home in Quaker Hill, New York, to serve as a nurse at Armory Square Hospital in Washington, D.C. She was one of several million men and women who left their families and communities behind to contribute to the war effort. Many departed to fight, while others took on civilian assignments to support the military campaigns. During her fifteen months at the hospital, Akin wrote long letters to her sisters and recorded her daily experience in diaries. Years later, she drew on this correspondence and her journals to publish an account of her wartime role. Like Akin, other hospital workers were often eager to share their experiences with distant friends and family, and to preserve memories of the people and events that defined their new situations. Letters, diaries, and published accounts helped fill this need. Today, these documents provide a glimpse into the lives of those who served and a touching record of the challenges of hospital life.

Alabama school superintendent bans high school history club from seeing ‘Selma’: DeKalb County school superintendent Hugh Taylor cancelled the outing by students at the predominately minority school, saying he was concerned about obscene language and “racial profanity” in the Oscar-nominated film. An African-American parent of one senior in the history club who had planned on seeing the film questioned the superintendent’s motives. “It raises my curiosity as to whether something that they are not wanting exposed or the children not to know about.” said Reverend James Stanton. “I don’t believe it is just about the profanity.”
