En el año 1992, a raíz de un accidente acústico, comencé a padecer de tinnitus. Durante buen tiempo su sonido fue muy parecido al tono del tlf. Pero unos años después (en el 2006), producto de nuevas exposiciones a ruidos intensos, mi tinnitus se acentuó y diversificó, adoptando sonidos de distinto tipo, y estando presente más de uno a la vez.

Algunos de estos sonidos mostraron características musicales (como ritmo y altura), pudiendo ser identificados perfectamente como melodías. Si bien estas melodías eran generadas al interior de mi propio cerebro, no era yo quien de manera consciente ni premeditada las estaba construyendo ni componiendo, sino que estaban allí sonando sin mi intervención.

A continuación, a través de una simulación sonora, les muestro un ejemplo de este tipo de tinnitus experimentado.

In 1992, due to an acoustic trauma, I started suffering from tinnitus. During some time its sound was very similar to the telephone line sound. However, some years after (in 2006), due to new expositions to load sounds, my tinnitus became worse and diverse, with different types of sounds, and several of them being present at the same time.

Some of these sounds showed musical features (as rhythm and picth), and could be perfectly identify as melodies. Although these melodies were generated inside my brain, it was not me who in any conscious and premeditated way was constructing or composing them. These melodies were present there (in my brain) without my intervention.

Following, thanks to an audio simulation, I show you a sample of this type of tinnitus experienced.

Suffering from hyperacusis and tinnitus in a mild form since 1992 when I had an acoustic accident while I was using a headset, and having experienced an almost total recovery during the time I was living in South Korea, in 2006 due to several unexpected exposures to loud noises my situation became severe and forced me to stop all my activities by the end of the year, starting a confinement at home for an indefinite period of time.

It was a very difficult time with strong feelings of frustration. I was totally unable to play any musical instrument and to listen to music even in a low level.

I seemed to be that by this way, all my projects and musical activities were reaching their last stage.

However, it was in the middle of this isolation that I began to have an unsuspected sensorial and musical experience which was completely different from everything I had listened, performed and composed before, opening a new potential way to follow despite of my great limitations and problems at that moment.

Habiendo padecido de hiperacusia y acúfenos moderados desde el año 1992 debido a un accidente acústico, y habiendo experimentado una remisión casi total de estas molestias mientras estuve en Corea del Sur, el año 2006 a raíz de varias exposiciones inesperadas a ruidos extremos mi situación se tornó severa, obligándome a suspender absolutamente todas mis actividades a finales de ese mismo año, iniciando así un encierro en casa por tiempo indefinido.

Fue un momento sumamente difícil y cargado de frustración. Estaba totalmente imposibilitado de tocar algún instrumento musical y de escuchar música inclusive a bajo volumen.

Parecía que de esta manera mis proyectos y actividades musicales llegaban a su fin.

Sin embargo fue en medio de este aislamiento que comencé a tener una experiencia sensorial y musical insospechada y completamente distinta a todo lo que había escuchado, interpretado y compuesto anteriormente, abriéndome un camino potencial a seguir aún en medio de las grandes limitaciones y padecimientos que tenía en ese momento.

Coming Back to Going Forward (Regresando para Ir hacia Adelante)

Coming back to my country (2004) and being convinced that to investigate and promote peruvian music was what I must to do, and what would be more accessible for me to make future field works, I decided then to focus my attention in the music and culture of the amazon region, but without leaving aside my interest and my work related to world music.

This interest in the amazon culture made me to take up a cultural management position in a public institution, related to this region and its environment; and on the other hand, to participate in a multidisciplinary project about peruvian and world music, at the university where I was teaching music.

Also in this stage I was interested (in a special way), on the therapeutic effects attributed to music in the different cultures all around the world, giving special attention to the shamanistics practices, so common in the native communities of peruvian amazon.

After two and a half years following this way, something unexpected happened that forced to me to stop everything and to postpone all the work I did for a next time.

De regreso a mi país (2004) y convencido de que investigar y difundir la música peruana era lo que debía hacer, y que era además aquello a lo que tenía más posibilidades de acceder a través de trabajos de campo, decidí entonces concentrar mi atención en la música y cultura de la amazonía, pero sin descuidar del todo mi interés y mi trabajo relacionado a la música del mundo.

Este interés por la cultura de la amazonía me llevó a realizar labores de gestión cultural en relación a esta región y su medio ambiente, para institución del Estado; y por otro lado participar en un proyecto multidisciplinario referido a la música peruana y del mundo, en la universidad donde enseñaba música.

Así mismo en esta etapa me interesé de manera especial por lo efectos terapéuticos atribuidos a la música en las diversas culturas del mundo, prestando especial atención a las prácticas shamánicas, muy presentes en las comunidades nativas de la amazonía peruana.

Luego de 2 años y medio de haber tomado este rumbo, sucedió algo inesperado que me obligó a detener todo y a postergar lo avanzado hasta una próxima oportunidad.

A kind of Global Living (Una especie de Convivencia Global)

To begin studying in South Korea was a totally unexpected experience since I met not only korean students but also students from all around the world, specially from Asia: chinese, japanese, mongolian, uzbek, ukrainian, iranian, vietnamese, etc

To be in contact with all of them allowed me to know a lot about their own cultures and especially about their native music. It was a extremely enriching experience.

However, it was possible not only due to the chance of getting information but also due to the opportunity to give it.

Few weeks after the beginning of the course, people in charge of the program at the university I was attending, asked me to write an article about peruvian music. Then I wrote it, giving special attention to the music from the amazon region, a kind of music that remains unknown even in my country until now. This article, translated into korean, was published in the university magazine.

At a later time and near the end of the course, I was also invited to participate in an International Festival at the same university. In the event I performed korean and peruvian music, including as a part of the repertoire, the song called “Spinner Woman” (“Mujer Hilandera”) popularized in Peru by Juaneco y su Combo, a peruvian band which was the precursor and the best exponent of the peruvian amazon “cumbia”. Once I started performing this song the audience which was composed mainly of students from different countries, started also to accompany with claps and with special enthusiasm. It was a very exciting moment.

After finishing my studies, all the experience lived in Korea, took me to reformulate my creative musical work as well as my work with the Quarter Note band. Once I came back to Peru, my musical goals began to change its route.

El iniciar mis estudios en Corea del Sur (2004) fue una experiencia totalmente inesperada, puesto que no solo me vinculé con estudiantes coreanos, sino también con estudiantes de todo el mundo, en especial del continente asiático: chinos, japoneses, engoles, uzbecos, ucranianos, iranios, vietnamitas, etc.

Interactuar con todos ellos me permitió conocer más sobre sus respectivas culturas y especialmente sobre sus músicas. Fue una experiencia extremadamente enriquecedora.

Pero lo fue no solo por la posibilidad de recibir información, sino también por la sorpresiva oportunidad de brindarla.

A las pocas semanas de iniciadas las clases, los encargados del programa de estudios de la universidad a la que asistía, me pidieron que escribiera un artículo sobre la música peruana, lo cual realicé con mucho interés y agrado poniendo especial énfasis en la música de la región amazónica, muy poco conocida inclusive en mi país. El artículo, traducido al coreano, fue publicado en la revista de la universidad.

Posteriormente y casi al término de los estudios, me invitaron a participar en un Festival Internacional organizado por la misma universidad. En él interpreté música coreana y peruana, siendo parte del repertorio la canción “Mujer Hilandera” del grupo peruano Juanelo y su Combo, iniciador y máximo representante de la cumbia amazónica peruana. Desde el inicio, el público, que estaba conformado en su mayoría por estudiantes de diversos países, acompañó con palmas y con especial entusiasmo la canción. Fue un momento muy emocionante.

Tras terminar los estudios, todas estas vivencias en Corea me llevaron a replantear mi trabajo creativo musical así como mi trabajo con el grupo Quarter Note. A mi regreso al Perú, mis intereses musicales iniciarían un nuevo rumbo.

A Far-East Field Trip? (Una Expedición al Extremo Oriente?)

After 2 years presenting the Witness Zone production, Plaka project started a recess period until a new production was released.

In 2004, the opportunity to take contact with the oriental culture, in which I was especially focused, arose suddenly after receiving an invitation from the university where I was working as a professor of a course related to the music of that region.

The invitation was quite attractive: to take a course about korean language and culture, during four months in South Korea with all expenses covered.

After a first moment of indecision due to that sudden offering and to the short time available to give a respond and to complete all the application procedure, I accepted and 3 weeks later I was already in Seoul.

What I considered at the beginning was going to be a kind of field trip to the East, finally was something to much greater.

Después de 2 años de actividad presentando Zona Testigo, el proyecto Plaka entró en una fase de receso hasta la realización de una nueva producción.

En el 2004 la oportunidad de tomar contacto con la cultura oriental, en la que me había concentrado de manera especial, se presentó de forma repentina tras recibir una invitación de parte de la universidad en la que trabajaba como profesor de un curso referido a la música de dicha región.

La invitación era por demás atractiva. Se trataba de un curso de 4 meses con todo pagado en Corea del Sur, en el que se desarrollarían diversos temas referidos al idioma y cultura coreanos.

Tras unos primeros momentos de indecisión, debido a lo sorpresivo del hecho y a la premura con la que se debía responder y realizar los trámites, finalmente acepté y 3 semanas después ya estaba en Seúl.

Lo que consideré al comienzo iba a ser un viaje de estudios e investigación, terminó siendo algo mucho mayor.

This song belongs to the concert given by Plaka in the Jazz Zone Pub de Lima-Peru on January 2001. The song calls “Dog Eyes” ("Ojos de Perro"), and its lyrics were written on the basis of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s tale called “Ojos de Perro Azul" ("Blue Dog Eyes”).

Esta canción corresponde al concierto ofrecido por Plaka en el Pub Jazz Zone de Lima-Perú en Enero del 2001. La canción se titula “Ojos de Perro”, y su letra fue escrita en base al cuento de Gabriel García Márquez “Ojos de Perro Azul ”.

As for the rhythmical matter it was applied some rhythms from different regions of the world. Here are two examples:

In the song “Resurrection Chant” an asymmetric rhythm of 5/4, so common in greek music, was used for the verses and for the keyboard solo (hear the audio below); while the chorus was in a 6/4 compound time.

The main musical instrument performed in this song is the greek bouzouki.

On the other hand, in the song “Witness Zone” a typical rhythmic pattern taken from the chimaychi style of peruvian amazon popular music, was used and held stable and constant throughout the song, on the basis of a 2/4 simple time. Hear the audio below.

En cuanto al aspecto rítmico también se experimentó con ritmos de diversas regiones siendo ejemplo de ello las siguientes canciones:

En “Canto de Resurrección” [muestra 1], se utilizó un compás asimétrico de 5/4 muy característico de la música griega, para las estrofas y para el solo del teclado (escuchar la muestra adjunta); mientras que para el coro se utilizó un compás (compuesto) de 6/4.

El instrumento principal en esta canción es el bouzouki griego.

Por su parte, en la canción “Zona Testigo” [muestra 2], se utilizó un patrón rítmico característico del estilo chimaychi de la música popular de la amazonía peruana, siendo mantenido estable y constante a lo largo de toda la canción, en base a un compás simple de 2/4. Microtonal Feeling (Sentimiento Microtonal)

Microtonality was another element applied in some songs of Witness Zone production, by using some stringed instruments (among them, the violin and the fretless guitar), and making also use of the slide on the electrical guitar and the pitch bend on the keyboard.

Two examples can be given with regard to this matter:

The song The End includes several solos and melodic ornaments with microtonal sounds, performed with the fretless guitar. In the audio sample below, it is shown one of those solos, constructed on the basis of the selisir mode from the balinese pelog scale, the phrygian mode and the natural minor scale. Other scales used in this song are the japanese hirajoshi scale, and the jewish ahaba rabba scale (dominant phrygian).

The chords that accompany this solo are, a minor and a major chord, without tensions (dissonances).

On the other hand, in the song XIII Sound the microtonality was used as an ornament in the melody performed with the chinese zheng, as well as in solo of the keyboard (with sound of sitar) at the final section of the song. The zheng melody was developed on the basis of the chinese-mongolian scale (pentatonic major), and the keyboard solo on the basis of the indian raga madhuvanti (that todi) in its ascending and descending form.

In this solo there is no chords accompaniment, but a drone sound (a note) performed with the fretless guitar and the e-bow. Another instruments used in this song were the russian balalaika.

La microtonalidad fue otro elemento utilizado en algunas canciones de Zona Testigo, para lo cual se usaron algunos instrumentos de cuerda (entre ellos el violín y a guitarra sin trastes), y además se recurrió al uso del slide en la guitarra eléctrica y el pitch bend en el teclado.

Dos ejemplos les puedo mencionar al respecto:

La canción El Final incluye varios solos y adornos melódicos con sonidos microtonales ejecutados con la guitarra sin trastes. En la muestra 1 se incluye uno de estos solos, elaborado en base al modo selisir de la escala pelog balinesa, al modo frigio y a la escala menor natural. Otras escalas utilizadas en esta canción son la escala japonesa hirajoshi, y la escala judía ahaba rabba (frigio dominante).

Los acordes que acompañan este solo son, un acorde menor y otro mayor, sin ninguna disonancia.

Por otro lado, en la canción Sonido XIII [muestra 2], se utilizó la microtonalidad como ornamento, tanto en la melodía desarrollada con el zheng chino, como en el solo de teclado (sonido de sitar) de la parte final de la canción. La melodía del zheng fue desarrollada en base a la escala china-mongola (pentatónica mayor), y el solo de teclado en base a la raga madhuvanti de la india (that todi) tanto en su forma ascendente como descendente.

En este solo no hay acompañamiento armónico, sino más bien un sonido (nota) constante ejecutado con la guitarra sin trastes y el e-bow. Otro instrumento presente en esta canción es la balalaika rusa.

Scaling the Scales (Escalando Escalas)

One of the main objectives of the Plaka project was to mix musical elements from several regions of the world, as well as to create new sound possibilities from our own musical experiences.

That goal was shaped in most of the songs of the Witness Zone (Zona Testigo) production, and was evident not only in the melodies but also in the rhythms, the chords, and the arrangements.

Talking about melodies, I can give two examples:

The song “I Go” ("Voy") includes a solo on electric guitar that was developed on the basis of the following scales and modes: the pentatonic minor scale, the mixolydian mode, the byzantine scale and the so called “hindu scale” (one of the indian melas).

This solo, created through an improvisation, was recorded and performed using the e-bow. On the other hand, the harmonic section was formed by two major chords (without tensions). Hear the audio below.

In the song “Witness Zone” (who gave the name to the production), a special scale was created to develop a improvised solo for the final part.

The chords used to accompany the solo were constructed from that scale through a system of fourths. Hear the audio below.

As additional example I can refer to the electric guitar solo at the end of the “Blue Dog Eyes” (“Ojos de Perro”) song, which was developed on the basis of the natural minor scale and the hungarian minor-gipsy scale. To see the video of the song click here.

Uno de los principales objetivos del proyecto Plaka fue mezclar elementos musicales de diversas regiones del mundo, así como crear nuevas posibilidades sonoras a partir de nuestras propias experiencias musicales.

Ese interés quedó plasmado en varias canciones de la producción Zona Testigo, tanto en el aspecto melódico, rítmico, como en el aspecto armónico y los arreglos musicales.

En el caso del aspecto melódico, puedo mencionar dos ejemplos:

La canción “Voy” `[muestra 1] incluye un solo en guitarra eléctrica, que fue desarrollado en base a las siguientes escalas y modos: la escala pentatónica menor, el modo mixolidio, la escala bizantina y la llamada "escala hindú" (una de las melas indias).

Este solo, elaborado a través de una improvisación, fue grabado y ejecutado utilizando el e-bow. Por su parte, la base armónica estuvo conformada por dos acordes mayores puros (sin ningún tipo de disonancia). Escuchar el audio más abajo.

En la canción “Zona Testigo” (que dio el nombre a la producción) [muestra 2], se creó especialmente una escala para a partir de ella y en base también a una improvisación, desarrollar el solo de la parte final.

To be Born while to be Dying (Naciendo mientras se agoniza)

Starting from 1998 and during almost 2 years, along with keyboardist Jaime Portal Luchini, was developed a shared creative project in which we mixed several elements from the world music, within the frame of rock and experimental pop music styles. The project was called Plaka (in reference to the greek bohemian neighborhood), and “Witness Zone”* (“Zona Testigo” in spanish) the resultant production.

The presentation was planned to be given in May 2000, by two live concerts at the French Alliance of Miraflores Auditorium in Lima.

Two months before (in March) my mother died victim of a terminal desease, which was known only 4 months ago, and which caused her a painful agony. Her death was also a kind of death for me. It was like a defeat.

The concerts were given in the planned date, but they meant not only the public presentation of our so longed project, but also the public farewell of Aura Alberca, my mother, who was my main support throughout my musical career.

On the following posts I will show some of the musical elements (scales, instruments, rhythms, chords, lyrics, etc.) that were used in this production.

* term used in archaeology to designate all places that deliberately are kept untouched, until an appropriate technology to explore it appears.

A partir de 1998 y durante casi dos años, con el tecladista Jaime Portal Luchini, desarrollamos un proyecto creativo conjunto en que mezclamos diversos elementos de la Música el Mundo, dentro del rock y el pop experimental. El proyecto recibió el nombre de Plaka (en alusión al barrio bohemio griego), y la producción resultante, “Zona Testigo”*.

Su presentación estuvo prevista para Mayo del 2000, a través de dos conciertos en la Alianza Francesa de Miraflores (Lima).

Dos meses antes (en Marzo) mi madre fallecía víctima de una enfermedad terminal, descubierta hacía solamente 4 meses atrás, y luego de una penosa agonía. Su muerte fue una especie de muerte también para mi. Fue como una derrota.

Los conciertos se llevaron a cabo en la fecha prevista, pero significaron no solo la presentación pública de nuestro tan ansiado proyecto, sino también la despedida pública de Aura Alberca, mi madre, principal apoyo a lo largo de toda mi carrera musical.

En las próximas entregas mostraré algunos de los elementos musicales (escalas, instrumentos, ritmos, acordes, letras, etc) que se utilizaron en esta producción.

* término utilizado en arqueología para designar todo lugar que adrede es dejado intacto, hasta que aparezca la tecnología adecuada para poder explorarlo.

Lost Music (La Música Perdida)

By the time I started working with Quarter Note (1994), my interest in peruvian music was focused in the one which had been traditionally forgotten and sometimes even underestimated by most of the cultural institutions, researchers and musicians; and, as it may be expected, remained practically unknown for most of the peruvian people. I am talking about the Amazon Music.

Although I had initial problems to find information on the matter, little by little I could compile material (that was spread) from several sources.

It was surprising to find the great diversity of native communities inhabiting this peruvian region, as well as to know the diversity of musical styles and instruments.

The tunes (called “ícaros”) performed by shamans during his ceremonies, generated on me a particular interest because of the symbolism and healing qualities attributed to them.

These findings, as well as the rediscovering of the amazon popular music (especially, the tropical cumbia by Juaneco y su Combo), contributed to shape a creative musical project which would see the light with the change of the century.

Por el tiempo que inicié mi trabajo con Quarter Note (1994) mi interés por la música peruana se focalizó en aquella que tradicionalmente había sido olvidada y a veces incluso subestimada por la gran mayoría de instituciones culturales, investigadores y músicos; y, como era comprensible, resultaba prácticamente desconocida para la mayor parte de la población del país. Me estoy refiriendo a la Música de la Amazonía.

Si bien tuve dificultades iniciales para encontrar información al respecto, poco a poco logré recopilar material de diversas fuentes, que se encontraba desperdigado.

Fue sorprendente encontrar la gran diversidad de comunidades nativas que pueblan esta región peruana, así como la diversidad tanto de estilos como de instrumentos musicales.

Las melodías interpretadas por los chamanes (denominadas “ícaros”) me generó un interés particular por el simbolismo y los poderes curativos que se atribuían.

Estos hallazgos, así como el redescubrir la música popular de dicha región (en especial, la cumbia tropical de Juaneco y su Combo), contribuyó a dar forma a un proyecto creativo musical que daría a luz con el cambio de siglo.

This popular greek song called "I went to the place I met you for the first time" was recorded live from a concert given by Quarter Note band (here in trio format) at the New Acropolis Association in Lima- Peru (March 2006), where I was playing the greek bouzouki.

Esta canción popular griega titulada “Yo fui al lugar donde te vi por primera vez” fue grabada en vivo de un concierto ofrecido por el grupo Quarter Note (aquí en formato de trío) en el local principal de la Asociación Nueva Acrópolis en Lima-Perú (Marzo 2006), en el que interpreto el bouzouki griego.

The Quarter Tone of a Quarter Note (El Cuarto de Tono de una Nota un Cuarto)

My first approach to Greek music, and later to Eastern European and Asian music, encouraged me after some time, to found an institution and a musical group with the objective to spread and promote in my country the music from all around the world.

The quarter tone, a characteristic melodic element in several musical traditions (arab, indian, greek, etc.), would be used to adopt a name with global connotations.

But instead of using the word “tone” as it is, a change in the order of its consonants was applied, resulting then in the word “note”. Thus “Quarter Note” arouse, term that in modern western musical notation refers to the note which has a time duration equivalent to one quarter of the “whole tone” (the unit of measurement).

The quarter note symbol placed in the middle of a slanting staff would be the logo.

The institution began its activities in 1994 and the musical group did it two years later, with a greek music repertoire.

Mi acercamiento a la música griega, y a través de ella al resto de música de Europa del Este y Asia, me llevó con el tiempo a formar una institución y un grupo musical destinado a difundir la Música del Mundo.

El cuarto de tono (quarter tone), elemento melódico característico de varias tradiciones musicales (árabe, india, griega, etc.), que en inglés se escribe “quarter tone”, serviría para adoptar un nombre que reflejara su alcance global.

Pero en lugar de utilizar la palabra “tone”, se cambió el orden de sus consonantes, y quedó como “note”. Así surgió “Quarter Note” (nota un cuarto), término que en la notación musical occidental designa a la figura de duración denominada en español como “negra”, y que equivale a la cuarta parte de la unidad de medida que es la “redonda”.

El símbolo de la “negra”, ubicado en medio de un pentagrama inclinado sería el logotipo.

La institución inició sus actividades en 1994 y el grupo musical lo hizo dos años después, precisamente con un repertorio de música griega.

The Greek Fire* (El Fuego Griego*)

In 1993 I knew the person in charge of Cultural Affairs of Greek Embassy in Lima, who introduced me to the folk and popular music of its country.

I couldn’t believe what I was listening. It was something totally new for me. Scales, rhythmic organization, melodic ornamentations, phrasings and improvisations were different from all I had listened before.

I was surprised to see how music from those genres, could have such a level of complexity I had found before only in jazz and rock music as a experimental project.

Its sound, halfway between the West and East, showed me the door to all the music from the East Europe and the Eastern world.

This produced on me a change of perspective in my appraisal of both peruvian and world music, and would influence too much in my later compositional work.

* this term makes reference to a highly inflammable substance that ancient greeks used in battles, and which could even burn in water. Also it's known as liquid fire.

En 1993 conocí a la encargada de asuntos culturales de la embajada de Grecia en Lima, quien me introdujo a la música tradicional y popular de su país.

No pude creer lo que estaba escuchando. Era algo totalmente nuevo para mi. Las escalas, la organización rítmica, las ornamentaciones melódicas y fraseos, y las improvisaciones eran diferentes a todo lo que había escuchado antes.

Me sorprendió cómo una música perteneciente a dichos géneros, podía tener tal nivel de complejidad, antes solo encontrado en el jazz y la música rock, como algo muy experimental.

Su sonido, a medio camino entre occidente y oriente, me abrió las puertas al resto de música de Europa del Este y de todo el mundo oriental.

Esto significó para mi un cambio de perspectiva en mi apreciación de la música del mundo en general, y de la música peruana en particular, que influiría mucho en mi trabajo compositivo posterior.

* este término hace referencia a una sustancia altamente inflamable que utilizaron los antiguos griegos en sus batallas, y que podía arder incluso en el agua. También se le conoce como fuego liquido.

The First End (El Primer Final)

I was very excited to begin my musical studies because I had read a lot about the university I was attending and about its avant-garde status in contemporary music education.

I did my best in order to take advantage of the high academic level of professors and classmates. It was a period of hard study and practice which helped me to improve my guitar technique as well as my theoretical knowledge.

However, jazz was the dominant genre in this institution and what I was pursuing in fact, was not only to improve my musical technique and knowledge, but also to become acquainted in new styles and tendencies, as well as in music from other countries.

Although I could make contact with some professors and musicians who were familiar to these subjects, and could get some material (actually, very little was available) in some stores, I felt that I must continue my searching in another context.

I decided not to continue studying in that university and to return to my country. Once I was back, the musical panorama I found was very uncertain and discouraging for me. It seemed to be impossible to find something really different from the established canons of jazz, classical music, or western music as a whole. But in the middle of this context, it appeared a flame that would light again my musical interest and enthusiasm.

Inicié mis estudios con mucho entusiasmo e ilusión pues había leído que la universidad a la que asistía estaba a la vanguardia en lo que a enseñanza de música contemporánea se refería.

Me esforcé al máximo para aprovechar lo mejor posible el alto nivel académico no solo de los profesores, sino también de mis compañeros de clase. Fue un período de mucho estudio y práctica musical que me ayudó a mejorar mi técnica en la guitarra así como mi conocimiento teórico.

Sin embargo era el jazz el género dominante en dicha institución y lo que yo estaba buscando en realidad no era solo mejorar mi técnica y conocimientos musicales, sino también introducirme en nuevos géneros y tendencias, así como en el conocimiento de la música de otros países.

Si bien logré tomar contacto con algunos profesores y músicos relacionados con estos temas, además de adquirir algún material (muy escaso por cierto) en algunos establecimientos., sentía que debía replantear mi búsqueda desde otro escenario.

Decidí no continuar con los estudios en dicha universidad y volver a mi país. Una vez de regreso el panorama musical fue muy incierto y desalentador. Parecía que no iba a ser posible encontrar algo realmente diferente a los cánones habituales del jazz, la música clásica, o la música occidental en general. Pero en medio de este contexto, apareció una llama que encendería nuevamente mi interés y mi entusiasmo musical.

By the time I was joining the band as a electric guitar player and singer, I composed this song (called "Transparence"). The version you hear here was recorded from a live concert given at the ICPNA Auditorium in Lima-Peru (April 1989).

En el tiempo que estuve integrando el grupo como guitarrista y cantante, compuse esta canción llamada “Transparencia”. La versión que escuchan aquí fue grabada durante un concierto en vivo ofrecido en el Auditorio del ICPNA en Lima-Perú (Abril 1989).

Con-Fusion

Returning to rock, salsa and cumbia , made me to reaffirm my taste in those genres, and stimulated me to make compositions within the fusion style. It was by that time (1988) that I attended an audition for the urban and fusion music band called Cantaro.

After being accepted, I began to work with the band. Joining Cantaro allowed me to apply many of the techniques and concepts I’ve learned in my jazz studies, but this time within the context of fusion music. It was a stage of very important and enriching experimentation. The band worked mainly on the basis of peruvian afro music, salsa and cumbia, but with rock and jazz arrangements. There was no restriction or parameters at the moment of composing. I felt a great freedom for the individual and group creative work. That condition allowed me to contribute with some songs for the band repertoire.

After almost 2 years of intense and continuous work, I began to notice that what we were doing was simply to play different musical styles and genres within a rock frame. Most of us was not really involved with the world of salsa, cumbia or peruvian afro music in any way. We were basically rock musicians mixing and trying with several rhythms, and doing a hybrid of many things.

I felt then, it was the moment to stop playing and to dedicate time to improve my skills as a musician, and to deepen my knowledge on some musical genres. I left the band, and soon traveled to Boston to start musical studies, with the wish to learn a lot about fusion, world music and the new existing tendencies in contemporary music scene at that time.

Once I was there I found a context that was different than expected.

Acercarme nuevamente al rock, la salsa y la cumbia me reafirmó en mis gustos y me impulsó a realizar composiciones dentro del estilo de la fusión. Fue por esa época (1988) que fui llamado para una audición con el grupo de música urbana y fusión Cántaro.

Luego de pasar la audición y ser aceptado, comencé a trabajar con ellos. Integrar este grupo me permitió aplicar muchas de las técnicas y conceptos aprendidos en mis estudios jazzísticos, pero esta vez dentro del ámbito de la fusión. Fue una etapa de experimentación muy importante y enriquecedora. Se trabajaba principalmente sobre la base de la música negra, la salsa y la cumbia, pero con arreglos rockeros y jazzísticos. No había restricción alguna ni parámetros al momento de componer. Sentí una gran libertad para el trabajo creativo individual y grupal, lo que me permitió aportar algunos temas al repertorio del grupo.

Tras cerca de 2 años de trabajo intenso y continuo, comencé a notar que lo que estábamos haciendo era únicamente, jugar con los géneros y estilos musicales dentro de un marco netamente rockero. La mayoría de nosotros no estaba involucrado en ningún grado con el mundo de la salsa, la cumbia o la música negra. Eramos básicamente rockeros probando con otros ritmos, haciendo un híbrido de muchas cosas.

Sentí entonces que era el momento de dejar de tocar y más bien dedicar tiempo a perfeccionarme como músico, y a profundizar mis conocimientos sobre algunos géneros. Fue así que dejé el grupo y al poco tiempo viajé a Boston para realizar estudios musicales, con la esperanza de aprender más sobre la fusión, la música del mundo y las nuevas tendencias existentes en la música contemporánea.

Estando allí me encontré con un contexto distinto al esperado.

During this formative stage my taste in jazz was very strong. I listened a lot of music, practiced and rehearsed every time, and made presentations continuously. The improvisation of jazz was for me the non plus ultra musical expression of freedom and technicality.

However, in few years, I realized that jazz, as well as many other genres, had their rules and their own parameters within which be developed. I began to note that the most of the musicians resorted to the same elements to carry out their licks, phrasings, and harmonic changes when improvising. I understood that the freedom to improvise, and even to include "out side" notes in a solo, was possible only within a framework preset which the musicians not should leave. Jazz music was after all, a musical language as many others, and everyone who would want to used it must be aware of and follow its rules.

Jazz became to me a very predictable music, and all the charm of improvisation was disappearing gradually.

It was due to this reflections that I started a phase of revaluation and rediscovering of rock, pop, and latin music, genres that I used to listen when teenager.

Durante esta etapa formativa mi gusto por el jazz fue muy fuerte. Escuchaba mucha música, practicaba, ensayaba, hacía presentaciones, etc. La improvisación del jazz era para mi, la máxima expresión de libertad musical, así como de tecnicismo.

Sin embargo, con el paso de los años, me di cuenta que el jazz, así como tantos otros géneros, tenían sus reglas y sus propios parámetros dentro de los cuales se desenvolvía. Comencé a notar que casi todos los músicos al improvisar, recurrían a los mismos elementos para realizar sus fraseos, sus giros, y sus cambios armónicos. Entendí que la libertad para improvisar, e incluso para incluir notas “out side” en un solo, era posible únicamente dentro de un marco preestablecido del cual no se debía salir. El jazz era al fin y al cabo un lenguaje musical como cualquier otro, y todo el que quisiera utilizarlo debía conocer y seguir sus reglas.

El jazz con el paso del tiempo se convirtió para mi, en una música muy predecible, y todo el encanto de la improvisación se fue diluyendo poco a poco.

Fue así que comencé una etapa de revaloración del rock, el pop, y la música latina, géneros que yo solía escuchar cuando era adolescente.

The Hare & The Turtle ( La Liebre y la Tortuga )

By some reason I born with a special gift for perform and create rhythm patterns, which became evident while I was growing. Every thing I did at home, at school or everywhere, I used to do it by playing some rhythm with hands, feet, mouth, etc. This action was always totally spontaneous and natural.

When I started studying electric guitar and music theory, the first thing I looked for was to achieve as much as I could a good instrumental technique. Rather than the pretension to become a virtuoso musician, I was interested to get the enough musical sources in order to transmit my musical ideas not only with a clear and expressive sound but also with an appropriate musical sense.

To be a speedy guitarist never was my goal, instead I wanted to learn how to create different sound atmospheres by which to get the best context to develop melodies and lyrics.

My interest in harmony was very strong at that moment, and to deepen the chord studies inside the jazz theory enlarged the musical panorama I had.

It was during that period I begun to familiarize with some asymmetric rhythms from the technical and conceptual complexity of the jazz. Besides, I begun to improve my classic technique skills on the acoustic guitar

After some time I became to consider jazz as the best and the more elaborated music of the world, having the other musical genres in a inferior category, because their simplicity and repetitive patterns.

Por alguna razón nací con una facilidad particular para organizar, desarrollar y ejecutar ritmos, que se fue haciendo manifiesta conforme iba creciendo. Todo lo que hacía en casa, el colegio, o en cualquier otro lugar lo acompañaba con la ejecución de algún ritmo, ya sea con las manos, los pies, la boca, etc. Todo esto fue siempre una acción totalmente espontánea y natural.

Cuando me interesé en estudiar música y guitarra eléctrica, lo primero que busqué fue adquirir tanto como pudiera, una técnica instrumental, sin la pretensión de llegar a ser un virtuoso, sino con la intensión de poder obtener recursos suficientes para transmitir mis ideas musicales con un sonido claro y expresivo, y con un sentido musical aceptable.

Llegar a ser un guitarrista veloz no era mi meta, sino más bien el poder generar ambientes y atmósferas diversas que me dieran el contexto adecuado para desarrollar melodías y letras encima de ellas.

Mi interés por la armonía se hizo muy fuerte y el profundizar en el estudio de acordes desde la perspectiva del jazz me abrió y amplió todo el panorama musical que tenía hasta ese entonces.

Fue también en esos momentos que comencé a familiarizarme con algunos ritmos asimétricos desde de la complejidad técnica y conceptual del jazz, y así mismo a afianzar la técnica clásica en la guitarra acústica.

Llegué a considerar al jazz como la mejor y la más elaborada música del mundo, teniendo a los demás géneros musicales como inferiores, por ser simples y repetitivos.

I Go ( Voy)

“I was in the middle of a discussion

but what I get was the absurdity, I became prepared.

Tired of the neon lights

and fed up with manipulation, I took off.

And I’m traveling without preoccupation

I’m ignoring all the splendour

And I’m traveling to another direction

I’m shunnig the resignation…”

These lyrics were written when I joined the experimental pop band called Plaka in 1998. The main idea behind them has been the thinking that rules the way I’ve made music and I’ve lived: “every time you reach a goal, be ready to change the direction, no matter how succesfull could be the present. And, as much as you can, never go back to the past”.

Al-brk is a word related to my mother’s last name, Alberca, which means “pool”. This word that comes from Spain, is derived from the arabic al-birka which means “the-pool”.

(It was during the second half of the Middle Age that the arab muslims settle down in Andalucia-Spain, where they share the land with jews, gypsies, spanish christians, and African bereberes. There were a mixture of cultures that grew up a great civilization called “Al-Andaluz” which became the main center of cultural and intellectual activity of that time. This fact contributed that Europe could leave the Middle Age to reach the Renaissance)

I’ve been strongly influenced not only by the music of all of those cultures, but also by the music from all around the world including Indian, Chinese, Indonesia, and latin American music.

On this blog I wish to share with you the main characteristics and elements of my creative musical work of all these years, and the direction it is taking at this time, when I’m starting a personal project.

Esta letra fue escrita cuando integré el grupo de pop experimental Plaka en 1998. La idea central detrás de esas líneas, ha sido el principio que ha regido la manera en que he trabajado la música, así como la manera como he vivido en general: “cada vez que tu alcances una meta, prepárate para cambiar de dirección, sin importar cuán exitoso pueda ser el presente”.

Al-brk es una palabra relacionada con el apellido de mi madre, Alberca, que significa “pozo o piscina”. Esta palabra que procede de España, se deriva a su vez de la palabra árabe al-birka que significa “el pozo”.

(Fue durante la segunda mitad de la Edad Media que los musulmanes árabes se establecieron en Andalucía-España, donde compartieron el lugar con judíos, gitanos, cristianos españoles y beréberes africanos. Hubo una mixtura de culturas que dio origen a una gran civilización llamada “Al-Andaluz” que llegó a ser el principal centro de la actividad cultural e intelectual de aquel tiempo. Este hecho contribuyó a que Europa dejara la Edad Media y se introdujera en el Renacimiento)

Yo he estado fuertemente influenciado no solo por la música de estas culturas, sino también por la música de todo el mundo, incluyendo la música india, china, indonesia y latinoamericana.

En este blog deseo compartir con uds. las principales características y elementos de mi trabajo musical creativo de todos estos años, y el rumbo que está tomando en este momento, cuando me encuentro iniciando un proyecto personal.
