I still have to add a lot of stuff to it like syndication, more links and graphics. I'm still figuring out how it all works so if you notice any kinks, or if there's anything you might want to suggest, let me know. The place has comments, but you can email me for a more direct response.

I will not be shutting this place down. In fact, this will now act as an archive to all my posts from this point way back to 1998.

I'm not abandoning Blogger completely though. My Crest Hut blog is still here, as well as the San Pablo City blog. Blogger works fine enough for me to continue using it. It features one of my stories, translated into Croatian!

How cool is that?

It's a magazine edited by comics writer Darko Macan, who invited me to contribute to it a couple of months ago. He specifically asked for my San Dig, 1944 story from Siglo: Freedom. Since it will be translated, and posed no direct competition to Siglo: Freedom in that part of the world, I agreed. Of course, getting paid for it was an added bonus!

Much gratitute to Darko. Thanks man!

It also features an article about, I assume, Philippine comics and my work...

I'm still tickled pink thinking about it, and more and more I'm starting to realize the possibilities of having my work published in Europe. It would be really cool if that happens.

I also received another package from France from a friend of mine over there, with a bunch of French comics, including a magazine with new work from Moebius, and oh man... the kind of art they're doing over there I find unbelievably inspiring. I don't understand a word of it, but just looking at the art is enough for me.

Read or Die Convention

What follows is forwarded from the Secretariat of the Read Or Die Convention. Watch out for this.

The Goethe Institutwill also be displaying their collections.

We had planned to host an exhibit of Nick Joaquin material courtesy of the UP Filipiniana Library. However, due to the fact that the Main Library is currently cataloging and indexing their collections for the UP Centennial Celebrations in 2008, loans of rare material to outside institutions have been proscribed. We will be displaying facsimile prints and showing several slide shows of the National Artist collections in the Library, however.

We will also be exhibiting a set of rare books (signed, unsigned, specially bound, limited and first editions) courtesy of Mr. Jasper Ong of Avalon Books.A few of the titles include signed books by Neil Gaiman, Umberto Eco, Chuck Palahniuk, Gregory Maguire, Nick Hornby, Anthony Bourdain, Marisha Pessl, Jeanette Winterson, Arthur Golden, and much more.

Live Performances The Alitaptap Storytellers, headed by president Manolo Silayan, will be performing onstage on February 3 and February 4 at RodCon 2007. Thanks once again to Mr. Jasper Ong.

Portrait of the Filipino as Reader Once again, all convention attendees are encouraged to participate in Portrait of the Filipino as Reader. All you have to do is bring photos to the convention which follow the contest theme and register them at the Secretriat desk, after which they will be displayed on our community wall for judging. The more books you bring, the more books you get.

Donations are very much welcome. We can't say it enough. Donated books will be re-routed to charity foundations and other book drive organizations (like RockEd, A Better Chance Foundation, and Books For The Barrios).

Attending RodCon 2007 We've prepared a set of guidelines re: how to make your way in RodCon 2007. Please take a moment to read these guidelines in order to ensure a hassle-free convention experience. We will also replicate these guidelines in our program guide along with the list of our convention policies.

Online Pre-Registration Closed While online pre-registration has ended, you can still buy RodCon tickets at pre-registration rate until January 31, 2007. The very first comic book to appear in the country, a magazine the full contents of which are comics, was HALAKHAK, which first appeared in 1946. It lasted only 10 issues, plagued by circulation problems. 1947 saw the publication of Pilipino Komiks #1, published by ACE Publications, which ushered in the birth of the full scale Philippine komiks industry.

Pilipino Komiks proved so popular that it spawned many other titles in the succeeding years including Tagalog Klasiks, Hiwaga, Espesyal, and further spawned many other komiks companies.

Komiks enjoyed enormous popularity and circulation for many decades until finally bowing out late in 2005 with the cessation of publication of Pilipino Komiks, which was then being published by Atlas Publishing. The last remaining remnant of the once great industry is Liwayway, which still contains comics within its pages.

The fall of komiks is a subject that is currently being hotly debated across many circles, and can be felt online through many Philippine blogs and message boards.

The komiks industry's fall started to be strongly felt at the beginning of the 90's when komiks companies closed slowy one by one. Its fall saw the rise of "alternate" comics industry, spawned by young artists and fans who saw no venue in which to publish their stories. This new industry, populated by writers and artists who owe little influence from the weakening komiks industry, saw influence from Western and Japanese comics, influence that were strongly felt in their works not only in content but also in format.

From individuals and small groups of young writers and artists rose companies like Alamat, Nautilus, Culture Crash, Mango, Kestrel, PSI-Com and many others whose output have been moderately successful, although have yet to reach the lofty heights the old komiks industry.

Questions have been put forth about the possibility of that happening, amidst the many sources of entertainment currently available, only one of the many things hotly debated by concerned parties.

Indeed, some parties reject this new "alternate" comics industry as a legitimate one, perhaps ignoring the possibility that an industry that grows organically and persists inspite of seemingly insurmoutable economic issues has some qualities worth studying and investigating.

Filipino Komiks #1, published in October 2006, was the first serious attempt at a revival on a national scale by having stories in Tagalog, distributed nationwide, and geared to appeal to the masses, the primary audience of the old komiks industry. FK #1 sold extremely well, indicating rather clearly that the audience and the desire for komiks are still there.

February 2007 now brings the Komiks Congress, spearheaded by personalities of the former Komiks industry like Joe Lad Santos, and most notably Carlo J. Caparas, putting a call out to all Filipino komiks writers and artists to band together and find ways to revive the industry.

I am very excited at this turn of events, and I have high hopes that something good will result from this new enthusiasm geared towards Philippine Komiks. For those who can read Tagalog, you can follow the developing story, and updates to the Congress at THIS THREAD on the Philippine Komiks Message Board, or click on the banner on top of the left column. You might need to register to be able to read it.

I will continue to update readers of this blog on the progress of the Komiks Congress in the coming weeks.

Read or Die, UST Lecture

READ OR DIE

I'll be at the Read or Die Convention this weekend, February 3-4 at the Hotel Intercon in Makati where I will be selling Elmers 1 and 2. I'll gladly do an Elmer sketch for you for free if you buy Elmer, have bought Elmer, or even if you don't buy one. It's strange when people ask me to sketch Captain America or Batgirl or things like that. I'm not complaining, I'm just curious, because I'm not known to have drawn those characters, so I'm wondering what the connection was. To me it would make more sense if people ask me to draw characters I have worked on or created because the connection is there. It's like asking me to sign a comic book I didn't work on. OK, that's an extreme comparison, but the feeling is similar.

Anyway, I'll also be bringing a stack of original artwork to sell, from Birthright, to Batman/Danger Girl, to High Roads, and probably others. I won't be able to offer rates like I did at Komikon because those special discounted prices are only for Komikon. The next time I'll be offering those kinds of prices again will be at the next Komikon, sometime in October.

UST LECTURE

Next up will be a lecture at the University of Sto. Tomas on February 10, 2007. It will be at Room 801 Beato Angelico Building at 1-4pm. I'll be talking about something... most likely about comics!

When I was studying at UST in the late 80's, this buidling wasn't in existence yet. I don't remember what was there at the time, was it the UST Press? I know it's beside the huge football field. Lots of memories associated with that field. Those horrible ROTC Sunday mornings, the after lunch P.E. jogs in those yellow shorts with small white USTs printed on them, PACAFALAN, mooning over girls who didn't like me, sketching, just hanging out. It would definitely be a strange experience coming back. I know some of my old classmates are teaching there now... some of my old teachers are still there. There are some I want to see again, and one particular teacher I really don't.

JOHN BEATTY SIGNING

Schedule's definite! John's signing will be on February 18, 1-4 PM at Comics Odyssey, Robinson's Galleria.

+

Komikero meeting last Sunday! I have photos and a video, but I'm a little bit busy at the moment to put them up. Here's coverage from my ol pals Jonas Diego, and Edgar Tadeo.

+

I'm supposed to rant about something. I've been writing it since last week. It's rather long now. Maybe later in the week.

In the meantime, let me teach you how to cook my Chicken Curry!

Activities for January and February, and It's Crazy!
Activities for January and February, and it's CRAZY!

Sampalok Lake Park
KOMIKERO MEETING!
Anybody in town is free to join us at our first Komikero Meeting for 2007 on January 28, here in San Pablo City, beside Sampalok Lake. Click here for a map.

AREA B is most likely where we will be.

Para sa mga suki, doon tayo anywhere between tapat ng bahay ni Mr. Marino at Sabang Hills.

For those curious... these aren't really meetings, but just a get together of people who like art and sketch. Come on over if you're in the neighborhood. Bring your sketchbooks!

+

READ OR DIE CONVENTION
I'll be at the Read or Die Convention at the Hotel Intercon in Makati on Feb 3-4 where I"ll be having a booth. I'll be selling ELMER as well as original comics art. I also provided some material for an exhibit of vintage komiks art.
More Info on the RodCon2007

+

UST TALK!
I'll be giving a kind of talk/lecture at UST on February 10. I really haven't done anything like this before. The closest thing is probably my inking lecture for the Glasshouse seminar a few years back. I'm not much of a public speaker and I would have declined, but I sort of got cornered by Antart to do it. he.he. So I am. Sorry na lang sa mga taga UST that they would be subjected to the most unberably embarassing talk in the history of the oldest University in Asia. See you there!

+

Joe Lad Santos, Jess Jodloman and Jun Lofamia at a recent planning session for the congress. It's bound to be BIG and GOOD for the Philippine Komiks industry.

+

Cover to Secret Wars #1
JOHN BEATTY in the PHILIPPINES
Older comics fans would probably remember comics inker John Beatty for his work on the very first SECRET WARS, Captain America, Punisher and many other comic books. He's in town for personal reasons, but having recognized that he may have fans here, he's going to be doing a signing! More news on that later.

+

Captain Hatch, Weird Mystery Tales, DC Comics 1974
JESS JODLOMAN
I'll also be interviewing Jess Jodloman sometime in February. Jess Jodloman is part of the first wave of Filipino comics illustrators who made an impact on US Comics. Jess Jodloman is a particular favorite of mine, having drawn really beautifully gruesome stories for DC's mystery and horror titles. I went to the store so I could see Philip Tan, who was coming back to the Philippines for a vacation (and a dentist appointment?). I also wanted to see Jay, who we call "Efren", because we see so very little of him. The last time I saw him was at the 1st Philippine Komikon in 2005. I was also delivering copies of both Elmer #1 and #2, because the store had already sold out of copies.

Pretty soon, literally everyone was there. I might be missing someone, but a lot of people arrived.

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v70/Komikero/signing200704.jpg"
Gerry Alanguilan, Gilbert, Philip, Ryan Orosco

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v70/Komikero/signing200703.jpg"
Dennis Crisostomo, Carlo Pagulayan, Ryan

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v70/Komikero/signing200702.jpg"
Jeff Huet, Leinil Francis Yu, Ryan, Jay Anacleto, Carlo

And hey, look at that... video! (Sorry, can't help it.)

Hang on as I'll be uploading a better quality version at Live Video very soon. Starfire is the studio Whilce Portacio established back in the mid 90's here in the Philippines. Only Whilce himself is missing, as well as Roy Allan Martinez.

Thanks to Comics Odyssey owner Sandy Sansolis. The Internet has been mind numbingly ssslllloooooo o o o o o o o w for me the past couple of weeks. Many sites just won't open for me, including this one. But it seems all better now, although some sites still load slowly. Lots of news, first and foremost being, Tony DeZuniga's art exhibit at Megamall. I went there for the opening last night and it was like a reunion of old and new comics people. It was something to see. Naturally, I had my camera with me.

SUPERHEROES
Tony DeZuniga Art Exhibit
Crucible Gallery
4th Floor, SM Megamall
Metro Manila, Philippines
Ongoing, beginning January 16, 2007

The Crucible Gallery

Jess Jodloman, Abe Ocampo, Tony DeZuniga

Abe Ocampo, Rico Rival, Tony DeZuniga

And I guess by this time you would know that I just can't resist making a video of this event. Let's see.

I recently did a video interview with Tony DeZuniga, asking him about his reasons for choosing comics as a career, how Jonah Hex was designed, and how he seems to get better and better with age. The interview is in Tagalog, but it has English subtitles.

Tony DeZuniga Interview
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8RXv-yviNk

+

Comics Odyssey Comic Book Signing
Comics Odyssey
Robinson's Galleria
Edsa Cor. At the time I think I was inking Hazard, but at the same time I was also doing these photocopied mini comics. "Dead Heart" stories was one of those mini comics. The first issue had a story called "July 16", which came out September of 1996, which I did around the same time I was inking Grifter.

The 2nd issue came months later, which contained the first Stupid Chicken Stories, as well as the main story, "Blood Brothers". This story was illustrated by Leinil Francis Yu. He was training under Whilce at the time, and he was just a few months away from breaking into Wolverine. I asked him if he could draw this story, and he said yes.

After publishing it as a mini comic back in 1997, and reprinting a few copies again in 2005 for the Komikon, I've decided to fully color the story, and then serialize it online. You can see it beginning this week at my Ambrosia Digicomics blog.

I think fans of Leinil Yu would get a kick out of seeing his early work. I'm sure it will be fascinating to trace his evolution from his rough early days to the finely tuned pencilling machine he is today.

Happy New Year! 2006 In Review, Resolutions for 2007

Happy New Year!
2006 in Review
2007 Resolutions

2006 was both good and bad, but I think it's better than it was worse. I finally launched my Komikero Publishing with ELMER #1 in June, my first serious attempt at publishing comics as both art and business in the Philippines. It was more art than business, but I'm glad to say I made modest profit of it so far.

Chris de Joya

I was disappointed that a few projects didn't push through, specially the ones involving Timawa and the Lake Legends. I feel that in regard to those projects, I did my best, and fulfilled my obligations, but circumstances beyond my control saw these projects fall through, at least for now.

I also discovered a great interest in video as a way of expressing myself. The interest was there for a few years, specially with the arrival of digital cameras that made shooting videos easy and convenient. It took You Tube to ratch the interest up several notches by giving me free storage for my ever increasing video files, the means to display them, and get feedback. Towards the end of the year, I've made around 60 videos, a couple of which (Trese and HIDE) I could possibly consider short short films. Those two allowed me to experiment with storytelling in a medium other than comics, and it's an experience both enlightening and educational. I have no doubt I will continue to experiment with video storytelling. In truth, I've already begun the third one, called "TRUE LOVE", where a few Komikeros helped out.

Alan Gallo
It's a blast having a Gallo send art about a comic book about chickens, a story about a family of chickens named "Gallo".

My favorite quote of the year comes from Mark Twain:

“Keep away from people who belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great ones make you feel that you, too, can become great.”

Yes, this is directed at a couple of anonymous bloggers who really have nothing good to say about Filipinos doing comics today. It's tragic that they believe they know what they're talking about, but the truth is, they're so out of touch, not only of comics today, they're also out of the touch with the facts. They make so many factual errors to support their arguments it's no longer funny.

They believe they're open minded, but in truth they're blinded by their prejudices, misconceptions, false expectations and false assumptions and they don't even know it. And that is their tragedy.

It will be foolhardy to reason with people like these, people who will twist the truth (or what they believe to be the truth) to suit their own agenda.

I have already spent enough time trying to explain myself and what I do, and still encountering incomprehension, condescension, and derision, all I can do is shake my head. To dwell any longer in their presence would be unproductive, and would keep me away from doing what I feel is more important, and that is creating. I no longer have too much time left to do my work, and I'll be damned if I let them waste a single minute more.

It's truly unfortunate that a few gullible people will be swayed by what they're saying, but I have great confidence that most Filipinos will be intelligent enough to discern the truth for themselves so I will leave it up to them.

I'm more thankful for people like this and this, who are although critical of my work, they write objectively and judge my work honestly and free from bias.

Romeo Tanghal
It was such an honor last year for the great Romeo Tanghal to spoof me and Elmer at the Philippine Komiks Message Board.

OK, resolutions.

I wasn't very much into resolutions, but having actually fulfilled a couple I made back in January 2006, I'm beginning to think it could work. You just have to remember and make it happen, I suppose. The list is up at my old personal blog.

It's in Tagalog though, so apologies to non Filipinos. The list was done jokingly, but I'm surprised I actually did a few.

Anyway, the one I fulfilled the most was to be more honest, specially with art critiques. It turns out I became more honest with lots of other things. Perhaps some people were turned off, and I know that a few "fans" are no longer "fans" after receiving some unapologetically honest critique and advice.

I think I shot my mouth off far more than I did this year about things I'm sure people would hate me for, and probably deprived me of some opportunities. But like I mentioned here, I don't care.

If I feel there's something needs saying I will, and damn the consequences.

I resolve to be even more honest this year.

But I have to be careful though, some friends are already saying I'm becoming this grumpy old man of komiks. Sure, I can be grumpy, and one day I'll be really old. But I'll never be bitter.

I resolve to work harder.

I think I've wasted too much time last year. I can't afford to do so again this year. So I will cut down on all the things that have distracted me, from anonymous bitter bloggers to too much TV and Internet.

I think I have to do a certain amount of work every single day. I can't let a day pass without doing something work related, and I can't let a day pass that I don't draw anything.

I resolve to be better with email.

I do appreciate getting email from all kinds of people, but more often than not, I tend to not respond right away, taking mental notes to respond later. Having the forgetful mental state that I have, I sometimes forget to respond at all, even to those I really want to have responded to. Starting today, I will try to respond right away to email I get so I don't forget. Except when I find your email annoying, offensive, or unduly familiar (if we haven't met yet).

Here are resolutions I am making for those sending me email.

-Don't textspeak please. What's the rush? Write normally and write well. Don't contribute to the decline of Philippine literacy.

-Don't send me chain letters. I hate chain letters because more often than not, they are thinly veiled blackmails and threats of bad fortune if you don't do what the letter says. Unbelievably, they're sent by friends. FRIENDS. As a friend, why are you threatening my life with bad fortune? Some friend you are.

-Don't send me "Click Here Only If You Have Time For God" emails. I delete every single one of them unread. I have time for God. I just don't have time for people who presume to speak for God to me.

-Don't send me art to on the pretext of wanting my critique but in truth you just want praise. Because if your art isn't very good, you'll have one of the worst days of your life when you receive my reply.

Rod Samonte

How about this, here are resolutions of things I will *not* do.

I continue to resolve not to have a cellphone.

Early last year I decided to stop using a cellphone. After several years of using it, I realized I was becoming someone I didn't like, and it was becoming the source of a lot of unnecessary stress and grief.

I don't have a problem with the idea of a cellphone per se. In fact, I think it's very useful in times of emergencies. I believe it has made it possible for people to survive in situations they would never have without a cellphone. It has now become an essential "need".

I just don't like that this "need" is being abused and taken advantage of for the sake of profit.

Just how many times in your lifetime will emergencies arise that will make the need for a cellphone essential? What is the proportion of those essential phone calls or texts in comparison with the hundreds and thousands of calls and texts you make that are superfluous and unnecessary?

Why do those cellphone loads expire in a few days, in a month, in a couple of months? Why can't a 100 peso load from a card last up to a year? Why expire at all? Why not just let it run out normally? Why are you being forced to use up your load in such a short period of time? Is it food that will rot when you don't eat it?

Why are certain non-cellphone related services/promos now available to only those with cellphones?

The bottom line is, I resist the idea of being asked, no, FORCED to spend money on things I don't need or want.

Next January, I will review if I have fulfilled my resolutions or not.

Happy New Year! I already have a regularly updated blog right here, so I was a bit hesitant to take it at first.

But I figured that the added web presence can't really be all that bad, since it would allow me the opportunity to share and promote my comics more widely. It's always conceivable that people may get to visit that site and not this one.

I would hate to duplicate posts between blogs, and I'll try very hard not to do that. Sometimes I expect it would be unavoidable. But I think I'll try to concentrate more on ELMER on that blog, because I see it as a place where I might have more of a readership abroad and ELMER is something I'm agressively promoting outside the country.

Rest assured though, that any significant thing I post about Elmer over there, I will give a link from here so all you who read Elmer and would like to be kept up to date won't miss a thing.

Right now, I'm just feeling it out and see where it goes. I woke up today with some great news about ELMER. Apparently, it made the Honorable Mention list of Publishers' Weekly's First Comics Week Annual Critic's Poll.

Check out the Publishers' Weekly site for more info:
http://www.publishersweekly.com/article/CA6401289.html?nid=2789

Thanks to Chris Arrant for helping make this possible.

+

And speaking of Elmer, here's more artwork sent to me, one is from a comics pal Romi Lizada:

Romi Lizada Elmer Art
http://romilizada.freewordpress.com/

Here's another one from David Jerickson Serador, which I found really interesting and freaky:

David Jerickson Serador Elmer Art
http://ashburndaride.deviantart.com/

Thanks Romi and David! I think it's great! Not to mention truly flattering that people would actually make something out of my hideous visage.

Somebody named "GodKnowsHudasNotPay" came up with this. But thanks!!

+

I have an interview up over at New Worlds Alliance (NWA), a group that "was founded in 2003 by seven local science fiction and fantasy fan groups: Via Astris - The Star Trek Club of the Philippines, Star Wars Philippines, The Philippine Tolkien Society, Pinoy Harry Potter, Pinoy X-Philes, Pinoy Slayers, and The Alliance of Eclectic Gamers and Interactive Storytellers (AEGIS). Its aim was to provide a venue for Filipino science fiction and fantasy fans to interact, hold activities, and express themselves and their love for their respective fandoms." (More about their group here)

Their group is responsible for organizing an annual Sci-fi and Fantasy Con in various places around Metro Manila. I had attended the first two cons in Mile Long in 2003 and then at Rockwell in 2004, both in Makati.

Graphic Artists #6: Gerry Alanguilan
http://www.newworlds.ph/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=139

Thanks to Meann Ortiz for the Interview!

+

An adventure I went through recently was attend the Grand Finals of the first Philippine Idol competition live at Araneta Coliseum. I'm a casual fan of American Idol, and so naturally, I was drawn to watch the Philippine equivalent. One of my favorites even early on were Mau Marcelo and Pow Chavez. It turns out Mau is a friend of one of my good friends, Arlan Esmeña. Arlan, his wife May and their family are naturally huge supporters of Mau, and they even accompany her to each stage of the competition to cheer her on and support her.

I thought wow, that sounds like fun. I had asked Arlan maybe one of these days, we can tag along as well. We all got pretty excited when Mau became one of the final three, and Arlan invited me and my wife Ilyn to watch the Grand Finals live. I thought wow, I've never been to a show like this, attended by thousands of people, telecast live on TV. It would be quite an experience.

And being the video freak I currently am, I naturally made a video blog out of it.

My Philippine Idol Experience
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yCwMD-PSLU

It turns out I had the right instinct because Mau eventually won the competion. Congrats Mau!

Banner Design by Arlan Esmeña

+

My good pal and former collaborator Leinil Francis Yu finally has an official website! If my back covers (only 2 remaining) weren't all spoken for, I would certainly use this for a back cover. I'll definitely make sure this appears in the interiors somewhere and in color in the compilation.

Robert is the creator of "Shirley's Pets" for Junior Inquirer, as well as the writer and artist for several successful children's books including "Mr. Beetle's Many Rooms" and "Diego and Marie Presents: A Secret Sense of Home, An Early Science Adventure" published by Adarna House.

Robert is an amazingly talented and I have to say, marvelously devious guy. I mean that as a compliment. As to exacty what I mean by "devious", I'll write about it in a future entry. Let me just leave you with the idea that Robert has been doing something unexpected and good for the Philippine comics industry. You the man, Robert!

Elmer Art "Mananabas"
by Ner Pedrina

Ner is a quiet player in Philippine comics, proving artwork for several comics, and helping put together a few projects. Check out his Wikipedia page for links to his artworks, blog and various projects.

If all goes well, I'll be at the baptism of Ner's baby this Saturday. What I find nice about this motion picture version of Carlo's comic book is that they used music from the wonderful musical. Let's see how the movie does. At any rate, HUGE congrats to Carlo!

To be honest, I preferred they stuck with Eula Valdez and Ricci Chan for the roles of ZsaZsa and Didi respectively, who did a wonderful job in the musical. I think they were just amused by the novelty of having ZsaZsa play ZsaZsa, never mind if she's suitable or not. Honestly guys, she's OLD, and it shows. I never liked Choklit, or whatever the name of this actor they got to play Didi. Every single time I've seen him I get this really overpowering negative vibe. His comedy is angry and cynical, and I've never found him funny ever. I like the idea of Pops Fernadez as Queen Femina though. She's totally gonna rock.

+

Post Office Frustrations

Oh man, I'm starting to get really dubious about our local Philippine Post Office. I've been sending LOTs of letters and packages abroad and I'm not sure if all of them are getting to where they're supposed to. It's getting really frustrating, specially if you're running a publishing business and you're distributing abroad.

The Post Office does have an Express Mail service that guarantees delivery within a week, but they're almost as expensive as FEDEX! Just sending 40 copies to North America I've had to spend almost 2,000 pesos on shipping. Sending 120 copies abroad would have cost 6,000 pesos (that's around 120 US Dollars).

I can send that by Standard Mail, but then I'm not sure if they will reach their destination at all, like I'm discovering now.

I'm really at a loss as to how to proceed, to be honest. Does anyone have any suggestion of a courier that's reliable and not as expensive? I wouldn't mind if the shipping was a bit slow... as long as it gets to where it's supposed to. Surprisingly, December is turning out to be quite a busy month with many activities. My weekends are all booked up with trips outside of San Pablo. I just came from my nephew Robin's Fist Communion yesterday at La Consolacion in Mendiola (video forthcoming). Last week I went to the baptism party for the baby of an old college friend of mine. This Sunday, another baptism, and then another baptism the weekend after that. What's with all these babies in December? Our friend and Komikero Edgee just gave birth herself (right on her birthday) yesterday. I expect I'll be going to that baptism very soon as well. It's become so that I simply won't be able to attend them all, as much as I want to.

Elmer and Humanis Rex!

The most active projects on my roster right at the moment are ELMER (I'm currently writing the 3rd issue), and HUMANIS REX!, which is now on the homestretch! Only 4 or 5 installments remain until the finish, and I'm already planning the compilation that comes after. I won't be able to just simply compile them into one book. Humanis Rex, as it is currently done, is meant to be read 2 pages a month at a time. To read them in one quick go would make the story read very strange. I will be adding pages to further expound the story and make the pages flow smoothly from one page to the other. Naturally, I would have to re-letter everything, and this would give me perfect opportunity to rewrite dialogue that would work better in a compiled work.

Jose Rizal Post #2

My research continues for my Jose Rizal project. The more I read, the more I find out things I never knew about our National Hero. The most telling revelation for me is how much of our grade school and high school textbooks on Rizal are quite simply CRAP. A lot of Rizal's history was written by people with superhero blinders on, exalting him as some infalliable near-deity, remote and unattainable. It does give you, as a Filipino, an icon to look up to, but personally, I would prefer an icon that's uplifted by truth.

As far as Jose Rizal is concerned, what is the truth?

There are many books and pamphlets, as well as articles online about Rizal. When I first wrote about this project, a couple of people sent me links to articles that have been quite enlightening. But what I have noticed is that given the same basic sets of facts, different writers and historians interpret such facts differently. Their interpretation of history is affected a little too much by their own personal perspective and world view. Their "history" then becomes more of an opinion piece rather than a clear and concise telling of what really happened.

It's hard to find a book/article/publication that's more objective than most. One such book I found, and indeed one of the most interesting, is "Letters Between Rizal and Family Members: 1876-1896" published the National Historical Institute. It reproduces personal letters between Rizal and his mother, his brother, his girlfriend, and friends.

It's like reading a blog, to tell you the truth. It allows you to get into the head of Rizal because you are witness to his actual words and thoughts. These letters are enlightening in that they paint a portrait of Rizal as completely human, equally susceptible to the same weaknesses and flaws such as any man would be. He cries, like everyone else. He needs money, like everyone else. He sometimes forgets himself when he's with women, just like any other man.

I have recently acquired a couple of books courtesy of my dad, collecting Rizal's personal reminisces, and other correspondences, which promise the same kind of clear window into who he really is.

One fascinating book I found is Ambeth Ocampo's Rizal: Without the Overcoat. Not really a biography but a collection of lectures on Jose Rizal. What I like about Ambeth is that he does not write pretentiously. He writes with a familiarity to the reader, and demonstrates the demeanor of a person completely enthusiastic about his subject and just can't wait to share every bit of info with you. It kind of reminds me of Dennis Villegas, and how he talks about Philippine comics. Ambeth doesn't pound you over the head with opinions, but rather offers supportable evidence and proof of his historical claims.

That his historical claims punch a clear wide hole into the infalliable Rizal we have grown to know clearly demonstrates how much we have been misinformed.

Although Ambeth by no means disrespects Rizal or denigrates his legacy, he does successfully demystifies Rizal and gives us the truth, or at least part of it. And informed of the truth, Jose Rizal is still unquestionably an icon and a hero to me. In fact, he is even more so.

Nestor Redondo Komiks Covers

Nestor Redondo Komiks Cover Gallery
Here are a few komiks covers of Redondo's I don't think I've featured yet. He is best known to comics fans as the co-creator of Black Orchid and Jonah Hex.

I did a short video interview with him for this site. I asked him about why he chose comics for a career, how he approaches his work, and his thoughts on Jonah Hex. Tony leaves for the US again tomorrow, but he will be back for an exhibit of his work at Megamall in February 2007.

Thanks to Tony and Tina DeZuniga! I was saddened to hear of his death. He was the very first Marvel artist whose work I really liked, having seen his art on early issues of the new X-men back in the late 70's.

Reading his X-men was a mind blowing experience. It was artwork the likes of which I've never seen before. Each panel of each page was exploding with action and dynamism. Check out the fight at JFK airport between Erik the Red and the X-men in issue #97 and you'll see what I mean. Seeing Havok and Storm cutting loose like they never have before or since was one of the most exciting things I've seen as a kid, and to tell you the truth, I still get a thrill looking at it now.

Dave Cockrum remains as one of my biggest inspirations. My prayers go Dave and his family.

You were, and still are one of the best!

Komikero Press
I got some press lately from some really unexpected places. This first one came from a local showbiz magazine THE BUZZ, published by ABS-CBN. Here's a scan of the page, but if you would like to see it in print, it came out in their December 2006 issue, Volume 3, Issue #12. The article is written by Liza P. Endaya.

I find it really amusing to find myself in a magazine liek this. In it there's people like Katrina Halili, Kristine Hermosa, Sandara Park, Claudine Barretto, Rosanna Roces, Alessandra de Rossi and Regine Velasquez. And then there's....me. he.he. In the page across me is Manila Mayor's son "Kuya" Kim Atienza. I see him on TV a lot. I think he's funny looking. And I mean that as a compliment.

This next one is from, wow! Liwayway Magazine! It's written by my pal Randy Valiente.

It's an article about the recent Komikon held at UP Diliman. I'm not sure if you can still buy it since it's from a week ago, dated November 20, 2006. I think it's really cool to find myself on the pages of Liwayway Magazine at last! I still plan on contributing something to them really soon.

This last one is from, curiously enough, Batangas Post, dated November 6-12, 2006.

It's written by KC Cordero, the same guy who gave us Filipino Komiks #1, and is Associate Editor of The Buzz Magazine. KC has been doing a lot to help the komiks industry, and I find it really admirable.

One of these days I'll upload large and readable versions of these articles. I just wanted to post them to say thanks to KC, Randy, and Liza. Thanks guys! I find it hilarious. It's the design that you will see mostly in the stuff being sold at the store. Let me explain a little bit about my decision to do this.

Basically, it costs me nothing. All I do is provide the artwork. The shirts and other stuff are only put together when someone puts an order for it. The store gets its cut, and I get my cut.

It's something I just wanted to try out. It's a service that's not based in the Philippines though. I don't think there's any online company based in the Philippines doing the same thing. Cafepress is based in California. This means a couple of things.

It might be a bit expensive for those buying from the Philippines, including ME. That's right. I don't get any of these free. If I want to have them, I'm going to have to buy them like everyone else.

But for someone based in the US, these things would be easily accessible.

I plan on using Humanis Rex! Wasted, Dead Heart, Crest Hut Butt Shop, and the Lake Legends for this venture. Don't look for ELMER stuff because I won't be doing them. Don't ask.

It's also possible to do books and comic books with them. It's something I will definitely look into in the future.
<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://alanguilan.com/sanpablo/2006/11/humanis-rex-shirts-and-then-some.html" title="Humanis Rex!
