Moses Avalon is one of the nation’s leading music-business consultants and artists’-rights advocates and is the author of a top-selling music business reference, Confessions of a Record Producer. More of his articles can be found at www.mosesavalon.com.

Generally, NAMM is described by me as a 100,000-square-foot Guitar Center with about 70,000 people playing "Stairway to Heaven."

Not this year. Aside from a record-breaking 92,000 attendees, NAMM has grown with the times, expanding from mere trade show to conference, power broker meet-'n'-greet.

Up until last year, had an aspiring artist asked me, “Why should I go to NAMM? I’m not a retailer, or a sound engineer,” I might have had little to disagree with. But with the addition of HOT Zone and a few minor tweaks in policy, NAMM has turned into far more than a place to see the latest digital work station.

Now I would say that it doesn’t matter what aspect of the music business a person is working with; if you’re not at NAMM, you’re probably not deeply in the game.

NAMM has arrived, and with more than 300 new exhibitors (to add to the over 2,000 already) and a record attendance level eclipsing the population of several US cities, it’s also proving the death of yet another piece of tech-biased propaganda: that the music biz is fading away.

As I recall, last year it was a very male and very dry trade show. But for some reason (and I have my theories), the floor was decidedly more co-ed and with a fair amount of MILFie hotness. The tech-awards show and the Ernie Ball anniversary party attracted some high-quality talent — and with them, their very high-talent entourages.

HOT Zone

But the real unsung hero of the new NAMM was the establishment of HOT Zone, a conference within the trade show that became the epicenter of the best deal-making at the show. This was probably unintended, by founder and organizer David Schwartz, but the HOT Zone lounge on the second floor was the only space to have a quiet conversation in comfortable chairs, away from the hubbub.

Had you happened by, you would have been able to meet industry shakers shaking hands in a causal and very approachable environment. Alan Parsons was among them, giving a riveting workshop and hanging around after and the next day to shmooze.

My hope is that next year we see a continuation of this theme. If so, expect the nexus of deal-making to be made more at NAMM than any five music gatherings put together. At about $100, the price gives it my highest marks on my chart ranking Music Business events.

Castratii: Telling of the Bees (Speak 'n' Spell, 7/3/10)

Castratii: "Orchid"

Cloaked in darkness, the Australian electro-ambient trio known as Castratii exerts a mysterious gravitational pull. Together, “spiritual brothers” Beauvais Cassidy and Jonathan Wilson — along with new addition Liela Moss — create an ethereal, otherworldly sound. For the group, darkness is the antithesis of information overload caused by technology. “People are definitely more interested in not knowing right now, particularly as everything is so easily found online,” Wilson says. And for many fans, Castratii’s allure lies in its mysterious movements; by revealing little, the band invites speculation.

Based in rural New South Wales, an hour and a half outside Sydney, Castratii draws inspiration from the untamed environment of the deep, dark bush. “Australia is beautiful and haunted and scary as fuck, and we want our music to be its soundtrack,” Wilson says. The band formed in 2007, when Cassidy and Wilson, both 30, were going through personal crises. “The project was born from sheer desperation and our limits being tested,” Wilson explains. One was physically ill and the other lost and confused. “We found each other in this sound,” he continues. “It was something we had to do to find a way out of the depths.”

Cassidy and Wilson’s first gigs were performances for friends in their lodge. Surrounded by spooky yet comforting sounds of night animals and insects, the band felt at home. “The remote nature of the space, and given [that] ideas appear when light is limited, it made sense for us to play completely in the dark,” Wilson says. “It was like playing to the things that had inspired the music in the first place.”

Moss joined the band in the summer of 2010, adding powerful female vocals to Castratii’s recording fold. “She can do things vocally we would never dream of,” Wilson says. The band’s forthcoming debut album, Eora, pushes to create sounds and sonic textures that it has not yet heard. Trained as artists, mostly in sculpture, the band members rely on their knowledge of visual communication to develop and convey ideas. “We attempt to make solid mental objects, with highs and lows, through our noise,” Wilson says.

By interrupting a listener’s physical space with some “insane” sub-frequencies, Castratii attempts to infuse visual art with sound. “That’s essentially what sculpture is to us, a negotiation of a physical object and its space,” Wilson says.

Two of the group's early tracks, “Orchid” and “Surrogates,” both concern death, and yet are not as dreary as their titles suggest. “Orchid” is a haunting yet soothing suicide pact, with the power and beauty of the forest expressed through Moss’ angelic vocals and heavy keyboard strokes. “Surrogates” paints a picture of redemption with a meditative sonic structure and a solid backbeat.

Because Castratii is so completely entrenched in its exploration of sound and space, it’s difficult for the band to break down its recordings and assign specific credit. “When we listen back to our music, even we do not know who has played what or who has made what sound,” Wilson says. A single band member begins, but by the end, the song has taken so many different paths that it’s impossible to retrace its steps back to the idea’s birth. “We leave no evidence or trail of breadcrumbs to find our way back,” Wilson says, “and to do so would be a horrible experience, like climbing back inside your mother. So we don’t do it.”

Castratii primarily plays a Fender Bass VI (six-string bass), a Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer, a Roland MC 808 Sampling Groovebox, a Roland Juno-60 (61-key polyphonic synthesizer), and a Minimoog (monophonic analog synthesizer). The combination helps the band create a shadowy cousin of 1980s dream pop, which Castratii performs in complete darkness — the band’s signature. “We find that the sound can consume a person in a completely new way if the performer is in the dark,” Wilson explains. In the darkness, the audience focuses on the sonic factors, not on how the music is made; it is total musical immersion. “When people see a rock show or even a classical performance, most walk away with the idea that they were closer to that performer as a person,” Wilson says. And with Castratii, that level of personal exchange does not occur. “This is something we want to keep to ourselves — our sounds and our persons,” he says.

The music connects the band to the audience, and it connects band members, who can barely see each other when they play to one another. “Our only link is the music,” Wilson says. Darkness is a barrier and also a medium for communication. “Darkness is so much better for so many things,” Wilson says. “It encompasses so many different good and evil connotations.”

Although completely isolated in the middle of nowhere, with gum trees, frogs, kangaroos, and possums for company, the members of Castratii don’t seem to mind. “It's a great feeling being so far from the modern world,” Wilson says. Music is the band’s connection to the world, and though the release of Eora will see the band performing and touring more, it’s not Castratii’s ultimate goal. “We hope that the recorded music changes people,” Wilson says. “That’s where it starts.”

Every other Thursday, Pop Addict presents infectious tunes from contemporary musicians across indie rock, pop, folk, electronica, and more.

Hospitality: Hospitality (Merge, 1/31/12)

Hospitality: "Friends of Friends"

When Brooklyn's Hospitality surfaced in 2008 with a six-song EP produced by Karl Blau, there was, naturally, immediate blogosphere buzz surrounding the band. Its poppy, minimalist sensibility catered to the indie-pop avenues it was exploring. The songs were spirited, displaying immense capability and promise. With that potential and talent came a signing to Merge Records and the band’s proper debut LP (produced by Shane Stoneback), which revives several songs from the EP while adding a few more, just for good measure.

From the moment that the album starts, there is something very warm and welcoming about the arrangement and composition. Album opener “Eighth Avenue” starts with acoustic strumming and persistent, steady drumming, immediately calling to mind early Belle and Sebastian work. The song builds gradually, integrating keyboards, harmonies, feedback, and percussive ornamentation, but it never strays far from its sunny-day feel. It is a laid-back indie-pop treasure that is sure to give first-time listeners a reason to give the rest of the album a chance. And once that happens, you’re roped in for the duration of the record.

The inviting track sets the tone for the rest of the album, giving way to the horn-happy “Friends of Friends” and dream-pop gem “Betty Wang” — two of the album’s strongest songs. Throughout the rest of the album, the Belle and Sebastian comparison rings true, as singer Amber Papini offers imaginative lyrics with a tinge of both loneliness and happiness, always presented with ample hooks. Whether it’s the peppy, poppy “The Right Profession” or the pared-down “Sleepover,” Hospitality’s debut offers a light, breezy listen that evokes indie-pop contemporaries like Allo Darlin’ or Tennis, making the band the next in line to carry the torch of summer-sweet sing-alongs and carefree jams.

Moreover, the hooks here never feel worn or routine — they feel new, undiscovered. With many of the songs oscillating between up-tempo head bobbing and sparse breakdowns, Hospitality has crafted a record that doesn’t try to do too much or too little. It is a debut that shows incredible potential, as the band is completely in charge of its own sound. Where the folks of Hospitality take it from here is up to them, but one thing’s for sure: they’re onto something.

In 2010, British DJ / electronic artist Simon Green released Black Sands (Ninja Tune), his fourth studio album under the moniker Bonobo. On February 21, he'll release Black Sands Remixed, on which a variety of artists were invited to reinterpret his chilled-out, beat-driven lounge music.

Check out the video below for the reworked version of "Eyesdown." The song still features Andreya Triana but now includes raps by London's DELS, whose unique, laid-back flow and emotional lyricism provide a fitting complement to the track. Below that, you can watch the original video in all its costumed, forest-dancing weirdness.
