It certainly has mine.<br /><br />Seduced annually by those evocative snow-soaked scenes that adorn the seasonal Christmas card onslaught, I’ve longed to spend a Christmas in Europe living out my yuletide fantasies. <br /><br />Now, tickets in hand, my wife and I are about to spend the Festive Season in a place where Christmas Carols actually come to life - the villages and alps bordering Austria, Bavaria, and Slovenia.<br /><br />Rather than battle tricky winter driving conditions independently, as well as providing us with welcome companionship over the Festive Season, we’ve chosen to join an all-Aussie escorted Christmas coach tour of the area with specialist provider Albatross Travel. <br /><br />Our tour is to commence in Bavaria’s attractive capital, Munich, a week prior to Christmas Day and our winter yuletide expectations rise considerably when we arrive to a chilly -5⁰C and driving snow flurries.<br /><br />Munich is world-renowned for its Christmas Markets – Christkindlmarkt - so we roll in a couple days ahead of our Tour Group to sample this enchanting German Christmas tradition that dates back several centuries. <br /><br />We’re not disappointed. The Markets are vast and pulse with life. Row after row of vividly decorated wooden stalls sprawl through the city centre purveying everything from aromatic mulled wine and sizzling bratwurst sausages to handcrafted wooden toys, crafts, gifts and dazzling decorations. <br />At their best and most colourful at night, the markets are a virtual multi-dimensional Christmas Card. They absolutely ooze festive atmosphere: ferry lights glitter, brass bands and melodic choir belt out carols with gusto, while a sea of elated families and courting couples wander wide-eyed, sipping spicy punch and devouring rib-sticking comfort food to ward off the chill. It’s a feast for the senses.<br />Primed by this magical experience we link to our coach tour, connecting with a happy bunch of thirty fellow Aussies, aged from late teens to seniors. Arriving from all over Oz, they appear as excited as us at the prospect of a White Christmas adventure. <br /><br />Setting off across a landscape silenced by a snowy blanket we travel through a dreamy sea of white towards Germany’s Bavarian Alps. It’s like driving through a story book: colourful gingerbread villages, isolated timber-clad churches crowned with onion-shaped domes, and dense spruce forests laden with (icing-sugar lookalike) snow vie for our attention. <br /><br />Soon we are in the shadow of the imposing hulk of Neuschwanstein Castle, the famed romantic fantasy creation of enigmatic King Ludwig II (a “Michael Jackson” of the 1850’s). Set on a precarious rock ledge amid eye-bulging Bavarian scenery, this extravagant turreted masterpiece looks down from its fairytale alpine setting with indifference on the bustle of the 21st century. <br /><br />Despite Neuschwanstein’s deserved glory its nearby neighbour, the village of Oberammergau, however, proves the unexpected highlight of the Coach Tour for me.<br /><br />Here we discover a small, intimate Christmas Market buzzing with frenetic festive activity; its epicentre a massive crib occupied by live nativity identities and farmyard animals. Iconic Christmas characters roam the narrow, snowy, picture-perfect village streets, where the scent of spiced wine and roasting chestnuts fills the air. I stand mesmerized and ecstatic, for this winter mirage fulfils my White Christmas conceptions completely. I’ve got what I came looking for, and its only day two of the tour itinerary. <br />Next we track through a bitterly cold Austria (-13⁰C) for two days, our cheerful yuletide group delighting in the atmospheric traditional Christmas Markets of Innsbruck, and their commercial counterpart, the wallet-emptying but enjoyable Swarovski Crystal World Cavern. <br /><br />Then its two days in the scenic majesty of the Italian Dolomites, staying at the stunningly located cliff-perched Castelbrando, before arriving on Christmas Eve at Lake Bled in Slovenia. Ringed by a rumpled rug of alpine peaks, the tiny town of Bled hugs the eastern shore of a placid Lake and is our home for four days over Christmas. <br /><br />Lazily at peace in the Lakes centre is a tiny island capped by a romantic spire-topped white church that acts as the focus for the breathtaking views that draw millions of visitors worldwide to this my favourite panorama in the whole of Europe. <br /><br />With welcome free time in Bled, my wife and I elect to do a private tour of the Marian pilgrimage site at Brezje, only 10kms away. Here there is a remarkable museum of Nativity cribs collected from all around the world. Numbering many dozens, and painstakingly constructed in fine detail, it’s an ethnic feast of originality, creativity and spirituality; indeed the perfect Christmas Day prelude. <br />As night falls on Christmas Eve so does heavy rain. Half our group decide on an early night; the remainder join a drenched throng of friendly locals and troop off to Midnight Mass to enjoy an atmospheric liturgy propelled along by a chorus of contagious carols.<br /><br />Christmas Day dawns wet, not white; it’s a huge disappointment to our group. The rain continues all day resulting in subdued spirits and celebrations, notwithstanding the chirpy festivity of a traditional Christmas turkey lunch. <br /><br />Next day things are better. Boxing Day breaks clear and sunny allowing us to head to Slovenia’s alpine playground, Kranjska Gora, a short 45minute drive away. <br /><br />Stunningly beautiful, the mountain slopes here wear a heavy coat of snow and absolutely swarm with Slovenians celebrating the Season. Abandoning any reserve we Aussies rush to join the alpine activities with larrikin enthusiasm. Thankfully the Slovenians are accepting and encouraging. The day turns out to be a riot of fun and is a highlight for many in the tour group.<br /><br />A day later our tour ends back in Munich where we meet other Groups of Australians concluding differing Albatross Christmas Tours. One of them is Bastille Day in Paris and the other will be visiting Fromelles on the 19th July – the day of the official commemoration of the re-interring of the re-interment of 250 British and Australian soldiers, who died at the Battle of Fromelles in July 1916.</p> <p>This 14 day tour is led by a highly experienced, specialist Tour Manager who has handled dozens of dedicated ANZAC commemorative programmes in the past.
