ARGENTINA: Revised proposals for a metro network in the city of Córdoba have been submitted to the federal transport ministry for approval. Developed by China Railway International, the project envisages construction of three routes totalling 32∙9 km serving 26 stations. Expected to take seven years to build, the network would be financed by a US$1 8bn loan from China over 15 years.

The 10∙7 km Line A with 11 stations would run from Colón Avenue in the west to Bajada de Piedra. Interchange would be provided at Maipú with the proposed 6∙5 km north-south Line B, which would run from Alta Córdoba near the Belgrano Railway station to Rontonda las Flores, serving eight stations. Shortest of the three routes, the 5∙6 km Line C with seven stations would also run east-west from Fuerza Aérea Avenue to Sabattini Avenue, paralleling Line A but further south.

The project is being taken forward under the framework agreement between President Cristina Fernández and the Chinese government announced in July 2010. Earlier plans for a 15∙8 km metro costing US$1∙1bn had been submitted in 2008 by a consortium of Iecsa, Ghello and Alstom.

There are over 50 theaters, and many culture centers and “arte bars”, where you can see theater, art exhibitions and different music acts. Every 2 years there is the Festival de Teatro del Mercosur, Argentina’s most important theater festival, with many groups of South America.

Most important theaters include:

• Teatro del Libertador, Av. Vélez Sársfield / Duarte Quirós, the biggest and most traditional, in Italian opera-house style, featuring opera and classical music, but also more modern pieces.
• Teatro Real, San Jerónimo 66, facing Plaza San Martín, the second traditional theater, with a wide variety of shows, including opera, music, and humor.

• Spacio Cirulaxia, Pasaje Pérez 12

Modern theater is also shown in Cineclub Municipal Hugo del Carril (s.u.), where there are parodies of popular movies, each Monday.

Mainstream cinemas are in the shopping centers of Patio Olmos, Nuevo Centro and Córdoba Shopping, but there are some traditional cinemas in the city center.

There are also more many art-cinemas, with some of them being very active cultural centers.

Many “arte bars” show movies, too.

In the many cultural centers there are not only a wide variety of shows and exhibitions, but you can also assist at many courses:

• Ciudad de las Artes, Av. Ricchieri (Parque Sarmiento; Bo. Villa Revol), a new cultural complex with many institutes
• Paseo de las Artes (see above)
• Pabellón Argentina, the cultural center of the University
• Centro Cultural España Córdoba, Caseros / Independencia, shows of modern music, theater, cinema and multimedia arts, and literature
• Goethe-Institut, Plaza España (Nueva Córdoba), German culture center
• Casa Grote (Padre Grote, Bo. General Bustos), “underground” culture center, with exhibitions, music and theater.
• 990 Arte Club (Bv. Los Andes y Las Heras)

There are also cultural activities at the CPCs (municipal district centers).

9. Monasterio de Santa Teresa

Cordoba has a ton of architectural vestiges left over from the Spanish colonial era. The Monasterio de Santa Teresa is clearly one of the most impressive. The cream and pink Carmelite convent is home to a museum of religious art and a courtyard that wafts with orange blossom and pomegranate.

8. Emilio Caraffa Provincial Fine Arts Museum

A Neoclassical masterpiece built in 1916, the Emilio Caraffa Provincial Fine Arts Museum is one of the most important such institutions in all of Argentina. Prominent local artists and international masters like Picasso and Goya all receive ample wall space here.

7. Casa Che Guevara in Alta Gracia

While technically not in Cordoba, the 45 minute trip to Alta Gracia is worth it. This is where one Ernesto Guevara lived as a youth, well before he became the most famous revolutionary in the world. The Casa Che Guevara is now a popular museum and de facto pilgrimage site in the town of 43,000 people. Alta Gracia is not without other attractions as well. Several landmarks in town in fact are part of Cordoba province’s Jesuit Block and Estancias UNESCO World Heritage Site inscription.

6. Parque Sarmiento

This incredible public park is the largest in Cordoba and lush home of the Emilio Caraffa Provincial Fine Arts Museum and Evita Fine Arts Museum.

5. Patio Olmos

I rarely recommend a shopping mall as a must-see attraction but when it’s as architecturally relevant and historic as Patio Olmos, shop ’til you drop. Just take the time to enjoy the views between stores.

4. Paseo del Buen Pastor

The recreational and commercial heart of Cordoba contains several amazing cultural monuments and buzzes with activity day and night. Come to eat, drink, shop, stroll and enjoy the pulse of the city.

3. Evita Fine Arts Museum

Dedicated to former Argentine First Lady María Eva Duarte de Perón, the former Ferreyra Palace, a Beaux Arts masterpiece, is the home of Cordoba’s “fine” Fine Arts Museum.

1. Jesuit Block and Estancias

The UNESCO World Heritage Jesuit Block and Estancias of Cordoba refer to a peerless ensemble of university, church and ranch estate landmarks built up over the course of 150 years, from the 17th century on. Access to all the sites on the official UNESCO inscription are relatively simple to access and visit.
