I haven't done a portfolio since 2006. So it's been a while. I have also been focusing on web standards, so I've totally forgot how to think when making a flash site. The thing with flash is that you can do anything you want. There are no rules, except usability issues of course.

Yeah I know what you all are thinking, but I love the interactive bit when working with flash. I'm a designer and I want to explore the possibilities, I'm not even sure if I want to do the whole web standards bit. Maybe I want to focus a bit more on advertising and campaigns. It's hard to decide. Love both parts of the web.

But back to the portfolio. This is the first time I'm making a whole site with actionscript 3. It's been an interesting experience so far and I want to share some libraries that I use:

First off is the BulkLoader, it helps out with loading assets such as xml-files, image-files, swf-files etc. And you can find it here: http://code.google.com/p/bulk-loader/.

Second is Tweener, helps you with your animations in a really easy way. You can find it here: http://code.google.com/p/tweener/

I couldn't live without these two. And I will probably always use them when I do my flash sites. Do you have any interesting libraries you want to share?

Well, as most of you guys know. I applied to Hyper Island Digital Media with the hopes to be one of the members in Crew 14. But I got the answer this monday and the letter said that I wasn't accepted into Hyper Island. For you guys who doesn't know what Hyper Island is, check out their site and their promotion sites.

At that moment I couldn't believe my eyes. I couldn't understand it, it took a couple of days before I finally realized it. Maybe I wasn't supposed to be a student at Hyper Island. But at least now, I'm a free agent.

So what about the future? I want to have an internship at Your-Majesty, and will hopefully be able to do this some time in the future. For now I'm trying to figure out what to do for a year. I'm thinking of freelancing full time or at least freelance on the side while having a day job. Just to raise some money. Or apply for a job in Stockholm.

What I do know is that I need a new portfolio, my last portfolio was made back in 2006. So it's really old, I have a lot of new works that needs to be displayed in a good way. This is a good thing. It's a chance to try out my new acquired Actionscript 3 skills in a real project.

I need inspiration, a lot of inspiration for my new portfolio. Anyone got any ideas?

I'm currently doing a couple of freelance projects during the summer and one of them includes working with Flex. I've done a lot of Actionscript 3 and feel confident enough to work with it so I've just started to learn Flex 3 (thank god for lynda.com). But I don't like the fact that I have to write the Actionscript code in the mxml file. There has to be a better way right?

Does anyone know some best practices for Flex 3?

The last class we have at the university is called "Web development with Actionscript". So I've been messing around with AS3, Tweener and Papervision3D. And I must say that I'm impressed with what Actionscript has to offer.

Actionscript 3.0 is a major change from 2.0. It finally feels lika a real language. We developers that are used to Java, Javascript, PHP 5, C# will feel at home with Actionscript. It's based on the ECMA standard so it's easy to use and structured.

It takes a while to getting used to event based programming. I guess making flash projects are more like working with a software. But I love it. Finally some creativity into web development, the possibilities are endless.

I love that I have to deal with animation as well as functionality. I've missed doing the designer stuff. I will continue with AS3 even after the university studies.

I'll also post my degree project made in Flex Builder, Papervision3D, Tweener, Actionscript when it's done.

I decided that the best way to learn Actionscript is to force myself to only work with Actionscript. I now have 10 weeks of constant Actionscript programming in front of me.

I'm the kind of person who loves to have everything organized. Properly named folders turns me on. I have everything organized on my computer except my work folder, and that's because it's a couple of years old. And back in 2004, I didn't do that kind of stuff.

So this is how it looks today:

- Work
  |- Year
     |- Name of Project
         |- Big mess of files

Well this is horrible, in my eyes. I guess sorting by year is a good thing. Especially if you want to remember dates for future portfolio development.

So my question for you guys who read my simple blog, how do you sort your work folder?

I have this problem, every time I've finished a design like this one. I immediately want to make a new version, it's not that this one is bad or something like that. I just want to do something new. I get inspired by this site and I love the feeling that I can do whatever I want with it. The possibilities are endless!

I always get inspired by my fellow designers on the net. I mean the redesign of Avalonstar, it blew my mind. I didn't even know that Bryan Veloso had it in him. He always made clean designs, clean monotone or duotone sites. I really loved them a lot. But this new site is soo new, creative and inspiring. I love it even more, if that's even possible?

If you have Safari, go to Avalonstar and check it out, if you don't have Safari, you should get it. I don't say that you should change your browser and simply use Safari for everything (you should), just check the site and the new CSS3 animation features.

Back to the topic

Alright were where we, right. So I always want to redesign, always! I hate the unwritten rule of waiting at least 6 months - 1 year until I get to redesign. But I guess that is for the better.

The thing is that I have so many ideas I want to try out and no projects to try it out on. All clients I have don't like experimental or anything fun. I need an creative environment. School just isn't good enough to tickle my creative mind.

People say that I'm weird, but I believe that it's a good thing. To get better at web design, do shit load of web design. You'll learn something new every time you do it. And some day you'll get rewarded for it in some way.

So my question today is:

How long does it take before you want to redesign your site? Are you like me who wants to do it right after another or do you wait a couple of days, a month or maybe a couple of years?
