Photo of a covered alleyway leading away from Ballycastle’s main street. It was nearly dark when I finally gave up on the hope that there might be a break in the wet weather, and so I ventured forth with few opportunities to take photos in dry locations.

Even in this alleyway I struggled again the fine drizzle getting blow around and getting onto the lens.

This photo is a 3 exposure HDR shot taken between 10 and 30 second exposures with the aperture as narrow as it would go.

I’ve tried to retain a reasonably natural look to the photo. I’d be interested to hear your feedback in the comments.

A young cyclist heading up a trail towards Ballycastle forest.

I shot this in a rush after he passed by but he wasn’t moving too quickly giving me just enough time to focus and frame the photo.

Today was a dull and dreary day, so I wasn’t too happy with the outcomes. Still, hopefully this photo has some merit.

Photo of the prow of a small fishing boat called Carol. There’s a small walkway that extends along the coast heading north-west from Ballycastle Harbour.

It’s a beautiful spot with wonderful views of Fair Head and Rathlin Island.

This shot was actually taken through a wire fence, but a wide aperture and making sure the lens was as close to the fence without touching it allowed me to get away with it.

You can make out a very slight distortion in the sea just to the right of the very front of the boat.

I took this photo from the small pedestrian bridge that connects Ballycastle’s seafront to the beach.

In the distance you can see Rathlin island, before that the sea wall. I was fortunate to have a gull careen overhead just as I was ready to take the shot.

I processed this as both colour and black and white, but the black and white version won out in the end. There was just that extra dramatic touch to it.

A very run down old building is up for sale, just off the main street in Ballycastle.

Another damp and gloomy day today making photo taking somewhat difficult.

I loved this old damaged roof though, plenty of character in those subsiding slates.

Photographically, I’m not really sure about this one. Most days I come out of it with at least one photo which I feel stands above the rest. Today’s results didn’t give me that sensation.

I was very bad today. I completely failed to get out and about to take any photos. To be fair, it was raining all day once again, and there really wasn’t much of an opportunity.

Instead I took a single photo, at home, and this is it. It’s a macro close up of one of the paintings on which Adrianna is working at the moment.

It’s quite a cool painting with an incredible amount of detail.

The raised parts here, I think, are actually part of a feather that’s been incorporated into the painting.

It’s lit up by a daylight bulb so hopefully the colour correction is right.

I’ve taken some photos of this clock tower in Ballycastle before, but this time was slightly different – the church gates were open!

So for the first time I could wander the grounds and get a little closer. It was a beautiful sunny day with few clouds in the sky. The warming afternoon sunlight bathed the clock tower and with such strong light I could afford a reasonably narrow aperture so that the depth of field covers the foreground subject entirely. I shot this photo at f/7.1 using my 50mm lens.

A silhouetted sea gull launches off its perch on top of a lamp post just behind Ballycastle’s harbour.

I took this photo just as the light was starting to go and I was starting on my way home.

Initially I was just lining the shot up to capture a sitting gull in silhouette, but just as I went to take the shot, the gull took off. Couldn’t have been timed better.

If I had a little more time I could have dropped the ISO to reduce the noise in the shot, but I’m pretty happy with the moment being seized.

This dilapidated sign on Market Street in Ballycastle points to a shop which appears to no longer exist.

I’m a little confused as to what the word after “shop” is meant to be. Either it said “shopiooyds” or it said “shop ooyds”, neither of which make any sense to me. Perhaps it’s a Ballycastle thing.

I’m a little concerned I didn’t get the focus quite right in this photo. I shot with an aperture of f/2.0 which should have given me a little breathing room. I’m wondering is my vague sense of blurriness actually just the sign being so old and covered with algae. I was also a little torn as to whether this would be better in black & white. I think it is, if nothing else for emphasising the age of the sign.

The weather was horrendous today and I just couldn’t face up to going outside and attempting to take photos.

So for the first time this year I didn’t make it for a 2km walk. It was bound to happen. It’s difficult to find spots to take photos in the rain here in Ballycastle.

Anyway, I did a little tour of my flat and took this close-up photo of a sculpture  Adrianna made a while ago.
