Alhambra police holiday policies: parking enforcement relaxed over Memorial Day weekend; DUI check Saturday

The Alhambra Police Department will relax parking enforcement over Memorial Day weekend, the agency posted Tuesday on Facebook. Overnight parking, parking lot, and street sweeping enforcement will be suspended beginning Saturday, May 25 through Monday, May 27. It will resume on Tuesday, May 28 at 2 a.m.

Alhambra police will however be conducting sobriety tests and driver's license checks from Saturday night to early Sunday near Garfield and Linda Vista avenues. Starting at 8 p.m. and ending at 3 a.m., Alhambra PD — joined by California Highway Patrol and police departments from Bell Gardens, Monterey Park, Montebello, and San Gabriel — will be stopping all vehicles driving through the checkpoint and any driver under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be arrested.

"All too often, members of our community are senselessly injured or killed on local roadways by impaired drivers," the Alhambra Police Department wrote in a press release Tuesday. "This sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint is an effort to reduce those tragedies."

The man shot and killed Friday morning after brandishing a knife at the Alhambra Police Department has been identified as Tony Nim, 35, of Alhambra. The names of the involved officers have not been released, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune reports.

Nim had psychological issues according to his family, World Journal（世界日报) reports. Nim's family asked for the tape of the incident, according to the Chinese publication, but police were unable to provide the tape due to the incident still being under investigation.

L.A. County Sheriff's Homicide Bureau is investigating the case and asks anyone with information to call (323) 890-5500.

Updated 5.17.13 at 12:09 p.m.:

The suspect killed in Friday morning's officer-involved shooting threatened police officers with a carving knife, according to Lt. Dave Coleman from L.A. County Sheriff's Homicide Bureau. The Asian male, ages 25-30, entered the police department lobby. An officer approached the suspect, but he was unresponsive. The police officer was joined by colleagues who attempted to speak to the suspect in multiple languages. A few minutes later the suspect brandished the knife, and officers shot the man multiple times.

The shooting is still under investigation and no names have been provided for the officers involved in the shooting or the male suspect. A motive is still unclear.

The Alhambra Police Department lobby will be closed for at least eight more hours for further investigation.

Alhambra Police shot and killed a male suspect in an officer-involved shooting in the lobby of the Alhambra Police Department, multiple news sources, such as NBC Los Angeles, KPCC, and L.A. Times, are reporting.

Alhambra police fired their guns about 7:30 a.m., L.A. County Sheriff's Capt. Mike Parker told the Times.

Officials are still gathering information as to the cause of the shooting, but sources tell the Times that the suspect was armed with a weapon and threatened officers before the shooting.

L.A. County Sheriff's Department deputies said Friday morning that they are assisting Alhambra Police Department officials due to an officer-involved shooting. The LASD released the following information at 9:20 am:

Sheriff's Homicide Detectives are en route to the Alhambra Police Department, 211 South First Street, Alhambra, to assist Alhambra Police Department personnel investigate the circumstances surrounding an officer-involved shooting.

No officers were injured.

A suspect has been wounded.

The lockdown on Alhambra Unified School District schools is currently being lifted due to the arrest of a suspect, according to Sgt. Jerry Johnson of the Alhambra Police Department. "I just received a call about 10 minutes ago that Santa Monica has made an arrest on the case," Johnson said. "Our schools are no longer on lockdown, everything is back to normal."

A suspect connected with this morning's "shooter" threat was apprehended and was a student at Santa Monica Community College, KTLA 5 reports. The 19 year old did not have any weapons on him.

Updated 9:59 a.m.:

All Alhambra Unified School District schools are currently on lockdown, according to the AUSD superintendent's office. Alhambra Source received multiple tips from students and a security guard at Alhambra High School regarding the lockdown status.

A spokesperson from the district said the lockdown will soon be lifted since a suspect has been apprehended, but we are still waiting from confirmation from the Alhambra Police Department.

LA Times reports that an anonymous caller threatened a "shoot up" at 8 a.m.:

Officers have been deployed to all Monterey Park schools and 10 campuses have been locked down.

Monterey Park police Chief Jim Smith said no gunman has been seen.

He cautioned: "It's really sketchy information."

Brightwood Elementary School PTA, an Alhambra Unified School District school in Monterey Park, posted on Facebook about the safety of their students. "Parents: The school is in lock down mode so all students who had previous arrived at school are safe in their classroom with their homeroom teacher," the PTA said. "There is no instruction today, so make arrangements appropriately."

Alhambra police arrested two armed robbery suspects Thursday afternoon after they allegedly stole merchandise from Home Depot on Marengo Avenue, according to a press release from the Alhambra Police Department.

Police received a call that two African American males, one armed with a handgun, robbed the hardware store and escaped in a black Cadillac. Patrol units then saw two suspects in a black Cadillac enter the westbound 10 Freeway at Fremont Avenue. They followed the men to the 101 Freeway, where they pulled them over at Vignes Street.

Witnesses from Home Depot were transported to the area and positively identified the suspects, who cooperated with police. The stolen merchandise, including industrial drills and other power tools, were recovered from the car.

The suspect who identified as Aram Yashu is actually John Jacob Yashu, 34, according to a press release by the Alhambra Police Department. Yashu gave police his brother's name and birth date. Yashu is wanted by the Monterey Park Police Department for burglary.

Alhambra Police Department arrested Monday two Alhambra residents for the obstruction of an aircraft as well as various drug and fraud charges, according to a press release from the department.

Officers, assisted by a Pasadena police helicopter, were investigating a non-related burglar alarm on Main Street at 10:11 p.m. when one of the suspects pointed a laser pointer at the helicopter, violating a state law that says no one can point a laser at an occupied aircraft. The helicopter pilot directed police to the 600 block of South Electric Avenue, where officers arrested Joel Reyna, 30, and Aram Yashu, 32. Police discovered a laser pointer, drug paraphernalia, and evidence of credit card fraud at the location.

Reyna and Yashu are being held at the Alhambra Police Department with a $25,000 bail.
