Brahman is the creator, Vishnu is the preserver and Shiva is the destructor is an old version. The newer version is much more interesting and at the same time confusing too. Initiated by forces that are relatives of those responsible for the big bang, life blossoms in the womb. Aided by complicated surgeries, the doctor takes on the role of the creator. The innumerable tiny microscopic yet fatal creatures compete with one another to take on the role of the destructor. But the preservers - antibiotics, pills and intensive care units do their job well. The world becomes a spectator to several years of unending war between the destructors and the preservers. Though the version has changed, the basic principles haven’t. All that takes life has to see an end, and so, either the preserver loses to the destructor or like a valiant solider who refuses to accept defeat in the hands of the opponent, ends the life of the mortal it was preserving till then. Modern healthcare is what we are talking about.

We have been taught in our childhood that Brahma creates, Vishnu preserves and Shiva destroys. Any child would interpret the above statement as an act of perfect coordination between the three Supreme Gods without whom the very existence of life is meaningless. The statement gives an impression of three supporting each other and making lives easier. But Jugal Mody, the author of Toke takes a different stand. The world of the three is as competitive as the world of humans. If Vishnu was to do his task with perfectness, how would Shiva get the chance to destroy? And if Shiva doesn’t destroy, where can Brahma land new beings in the space constrained world?

The clock keeps ticking. The sun rises and sets. The stars twinkle. The river flows and the winds blow. Amidst this perfect order with a tinge of chaos, life moves on. In the process, a memorable event occurs every second of our lives. Some of these moments bring a smile on the face while the remaining ones cast gloominess. They get stored in the inerasable memory - the brain - in the twists and curves. But alas! They can’t be accessed with ease and in most of the cases, it is forgotten that something was infact stored over there. Here comes the saviour - moments captured by the camera - some accidentally, some without the knowledge of the person and a majority with preparation. Whatever be the circumstances under which the snap was taken, every photo has a story to tell and a feeling to be expressed and in the process simulates emotions in the heart. Either tears roll down the cheeks or the face indulges in laughter.

Once there was a life, whose journey was abruptly and unknowingly blocked. It was forbidden the right to move on. There was no court to appeal to revoke the unexpected blockade. Nor was any human soul ready to take upon the task of helping the life move on.

Everyone was busy in their own work. Some were enjoying success; some were caught in the depression that has arisen from failure while the remaining were getting ready to face the tests of time in the future with a hope that they would pass at least one of them.

There may be a hundred people working under you but being accountable to the single person overseeing your work drives all the happiness out of you. The sun had risen from its cozy bed to offer the little heart another day that promised happiness and joy. The wind blew slightly swaying the curtains, to offer a gentle touch to the drowsy yet gleaming face, that served as a wake up call. The sparrows in their best way had greeted, when the soul moved its feet towards the window. A step out of the house which landed him under the gulmohar tree had seen a shower of flowers falling on him that served as a care taking hand, congratulating in advance, for the laurels he was going to receive that day. A crown assembled from leaves supported from twigs had been put on, hailing him the prince.

It was the day after a sunset. The sun had not risen, clouds shielding those radiations of friendship and love.

The beautiful voice of the nightingale deserves an equally beautiful tree to build its nest on. Rain drops floating the air coalesce with each other only when they form a good match. The colourful butterflies zoom towards those flowers that offer them their worthy share of nectar. And so, in a similar way, a woman dressed well and attractive, wishes that her husband be a good match to her, be appealing to others, have a smile that is attractive and above all be clean shaven! But, rarely, those dreams come true. Entangled in a life of early morning meetings, calls in the midnight and an ever busy schedule, rarely do they get time to stare at the mirror and reflect on how good or bad they look.
