I’ve watched everything posted online about the camera, and today, a movie posted by my favourite youtuber, mr. Gerald Undone brought back a memory from long ago. He said that A9 III (final version) has great options for the shutter speed like 1/48 and 1/96 to better match the frame rates, but unfortunately there is no option to set the shutter angle. And then it popped!

It took me a while to find the proof, but here it is.

Back in 2018 I’ve discovered a bug in the new firmware update of the original A9. It was firmware 3.0. Somehow it messed my settings on the FN button menu and showed the option Angle Setting. I’ve posted about it here.

A7s III was not yet released back then, and I assumed it will be a camera with global shutter. What did I know that we have to wait 5 more years to see it coming in the form of the A9 III.

Funny fact 1: maybe the programmer that released the firmware for the original A9 with this bug chose in the export instead of A9 firmware 3, he chose A9 version III

Funny fact 2: back then, I was a Sony European Imaging Ambassador in Romania and after I’ve published the article on the blog, a contact directly from Sony Japan asked me kindly to take down the article (no explanations given, he said it’s just a bug quickly to be fixed). I did that, but didn’t delete it, just unpublished from WordPress. Today I found it again, after a long search since I didn’t remember exactly when it happened.

At their 10 years celebration of full frame mirrorless cameras, Sony decide to impress the world once again by launching the Sony A9 III with a killer feature, a milestone for the industry, the global shutter.

I haven’t posted on this blog for more than 4 years, but this launch made me do it once again, and maybe I’ll do a review too when I’ll get my hands on it, because I’ve preordered the Sony A9 III the second it was official. Big shout-out for the guys at MattssonsFoto Sweden for putting me on their preorders list!

My thoughts on the Sony A9 III

I think this camera thicks all my deepest dreams of features to have on my dream body. I’ve bought the A1 (also the moment it was launched) but never got to get in love with it, and reverted to my old and trusty A9 camera. A 6 year old model, dreaming at the day that the Sony A9 III will be launched.

Well, this was the day, just shy 3 days before my b-day. What a present Sony, thank you!

Many will complain that we will get “only” 24 mpx, but for me, this is the sweet spot, I never wanted more. I know how it feels since I’ve shot the A7Rs and A1, but still loved the 24mpx size. Another thing to consider is that to have a full sensor read/out at an instant, exactly what a global shutter does, you need a lot of bandwidth and this is the sweet spot to get exactly that. And to get even 120 fps in RAW with no limits to focus or exposure, this is beyond wildest dreams!

Speaking about the global shutter – I knew it will come one day and I had a confirmation. Maybe some of you remember my post when Sony launched the 5.0 firmware update of the original A9. It came with a bug that showed something in the menu, related to the global shutter. I wrote about it back then, but same day I got some emails from Sony asking me to take down that paragraph (I was a Sony Imaging Ambassador back then, before moving to Sweden) and just wait. Well, I’ve waited, and it took them a while, but I’m so happy today!

Sony A9 III is here, and it finally came with another killer feature that Sony had it in their compact cameras but never in the full frame: the Pre-Capture function

It is so important for getting that killer shot, that only years of experience can get you close to do it manually. Now it will be a breeze. You will be able to choose from 0.05s and up to 1s interval, interval in which the A9 III will pre-buffer and save to card the shots, the moment you fully press the shutter button.

It is that small delay that our brain needs to process the signal from the eye to the trigger finger that made us miss some great shots with that decisive moment a fast bird leaves a branch, or a fast arrow leaves the bow, or the bullet … and so on. Can’t wait to play with it!

I only hoped that the Sony A9 III screen will not be like the one on the A7sIII and instead be fully articulated like in the Sony A7R V. Another dream come true, plus many others like picture profiles in video modes, 4K 120 fps and the ability to switch shooting modes from the menu and not only from the dial.

Well, there is so much to write about this monumental camera, but I’ll keep that for my other article, after I test it!

But somehow I’ve never managed to get close or show my support to LGBT community, even if I have friends that belongs there.

This time I found myself in Budapest at the same time the Budapest Pride 2019 parade and events took place.

I’ve never seen so much color, so much love (and also hatred from those who anyways show hatred to minorities in general, not only LGBT) floating in the air, whenever you look.

This time around, the newly launched Sony 200-600 G OSS.

Weighting 2,115 grams it is a lot heavier than my Sony 100-400 GM (1395 grams), but when I’ve heard of this new lens, my first thought was to sell the 100-400 and buy the later, since only great reviews were coming out from the launch press-event.

Less than a month after its launch, I got my hands on the Sony 200-600 G OSS, thanks to Sony Hungary (I’m located now in Budapest, till autumn) and played with it for a weekend.

So will I sell my Sony 100-400 GM and buy the new Sony 200-600 G OSS?

Maybe you have arrived on this article to get the answer to the same question, or maybe to the another one “Which one to buy?”.

I will spare your time and say it from the begining:

I still don’t have an answer to that!

There are so many pluses on both lenses that I can’t make up my mind. So even if I didn’t own yet the G Master lens, I would have still be in doubt which one to buy. Sorry guy, but I’m not going to lie. I really loved them both, but I can’t tell one to buy both of them, it might be redundant.

How does the Sony 200-600 G OSS compare to the 100-400 GM, size-wise?

Well, words can explain, but an image explains it better.

Actually two images explain even better.

What we see above are both lenses at their max length with lens hood on, and fully extended (valid only for 100-400 GM since the Sony 200-600 G OSS has internal zoom). The second image is of course their minimum length and as you can see the 100-400 GM has now a really great advantage, since it is way more portable and can fit in smaller camera bags.

But I still prefer internal zoom, so here goes a big plus for the new lens. Actually, the zoom ring has a really short moving distance, so you find yourself able to zoom instantly from 200mm to the max focal length of 600mm. This might come in handy when shooting fast moving action, especially subjects coming towards you, the photographer.

With the 100-400 GM I find myself 99% of the time at max focal distance. To that “helps” also the cammo I’ve employed which has a detachable part that can be added only when the lens is fully extended. But is also because I need more reach so that’s why I’m shooting mostly at 400mm.

So here comes again another big advantage to the Sony 200-600 G OSS, and that is it’s max focal length. I know it is a 6.3 at 600mm, but if I want to come close with the 100-400, I need to add the 1.4x converter that will give me 560mm but F8. And I thought it is a very sharp combo, the 100-400 with the 1.4x at its max range, but boy, after you see the IQ on the Sony 200-600 G OSS, you get to change your mind.

Here is an example:

And not only the sharpness, but also color rendering and of course, what we photographers love most, the bokeh. It has a creamy and pleasing bokeh, that only great lenses can achieve.

Not to mention the perspective compression a long focal length gives you. Unless you have no problem being seen with a long lens, there can be an amazing street photography lens too.

Of course, I don’t think Sony ever though to launch this lens as a street photography lens, but one can ask himself either it is good or not.

Is it sharp across all its range?

I’ve asked this myself after seeing how incredibly sharp the Sony 200-600 G OSS, how does it perform wide open at both ends of its focal range. I’ll let the images do the talk.

And to get an idea how much a 600 focal length will mean compared to 200, here is another example of same scene shot at 200mm and then at 600mm.

Sony 200-600 G OSS – wildlife and sports?

This lens has in mind sport and wild-life photographers, so I’ve also tried some of these subjects even if I had so little time with it. A park or a nearby lake comes always handy even if there are not so great subjects there like an ferocious raptor attacking its pray.

But I could still find some birds to show you, even though not so many were in flight so I could tell how well this lens does BIF (birds in flight). I’m no expert at tracking them, so I relay mostly on camera and lens performance (camera is Sony A9).

What about tracking you might ask. Well, it performs flawlessly with the A9 even when the subject gets obstructed or goes behind some trees. Here is an example:

Its weakest point though is it’s focusing speed. Don’t get me wrong, it is still damn fast, but by not being a G Master lens, with dual linear motor, has something to do with this, because it takes longer to focus from close to far, or the other way around. It might help a lot to use the focus limiters on the lens, which are 3 in total:

• 2.4m – 10m
• 10m- ∞
• Full range

So the main problem might be with fast subjects coming direct towards you. If you have the focus limiter set to Full (that was my case here) it will not have time to catch a close bird coming directly towards me. I was on Tracking Wide with the A9 and it did catch the bird, but didn’t have time to focus properly. Also I had a long shutter speed for this action: 1/500s. The 100-400 GM never had issues with this, or at least I didn’t encounter any situation in which it didn’t focus.

Then another “issue” I’ve found during the weekend was the sheer size and weight of the lens. I was longing for my “little” precious 100-400 GM which I love now even more for how light it is :).

I wanted to shoot some sports also, but couldn’t find anything else in the city during my walks except this fast boats and sky-jets fooling around on Danube in Budapest. No issues at tracking that big subjects, even when they also came towards camera (speed wise they are like a snail, compared to birds :D).

In conclusion, will I buy the Sony 200-600 G OSS?

I don’t know. I really loved it: its reach is amazing, is incredibly sharp, has superb color rendering and bokeh and has an affordable price for this kind of lens.

But I still love the incredible lightness of my 100-400 G Master lens, it’s better weather sealing, speed of acquiring subjects and tracking them. And I can always add the 1.4x TC that will get me close to 600, but at a cost of 1 EV.

It’s even a tougher decision if you just want to buy now one of these two superb lenses Sony has produced. I feel you!

PS: not to mention the two prime monsters we also might choose: the 400mm GM F2.8 (hands on is here) and the 600mm GM F4.0. They are gold!

It was last summer when Sony invited me to the launch of the new Sony 400mm f/2.8 GM(onster).

Even if it’s a badass looking and performing lens, it weights just 2.9 kilos and it’s an amazing tool to also use it handheld. And there are so many that are doing so (oh, I so envy you Alex Phan and other birders using this amazing lens).

Since testing it back in London my mind set a new Top 1 wish: to own it, one day . I’ve even found a solution, as one friend suggested seeing me selling my stuff before moving away from Romania (to Sweden).

Bike is sold, car is sold, now I just need to sell my soul to the Devil and cross my wife word who is against buying it (of course). I know I won’t be able to put this lens to work that much so it can pay by itself (as I use to do with all my gear), but I still want it :), but can you blame me?

So, how was it testing the Sony 400mm f/2.8 GM?

I wish I had more time with it, first of all. We’ve been invited by Sony to their EU HQ in London and we’ve attended a small presentation of the lens. I don’t remember anyone paying too much attention on the screen, all eyes were on the lens

To prove it’s lightweight they gave some of us to hold an equivalent setup from Canon (the 1Dx MII plus the 400mm 2.8), and then they’ve handled the Sony A9 plus the new Sony 400mm f/2.8 GM. The reactions where priceless!

Remember how it feels to lift a bag you would expect to be heavy and instead it weights nothing? It happened to me, too. Look at everyone’s faces

The new Sony 400mm f/2.8 GM has 17 lens elements: 1 ED and 3 fluorite, an 11-blade circular diaphragm and dual linear drive focus motors. The new motors are even faster than before, way faster than the already amazingly fast to focus Sony 100-400mm GM lens I already own.

On the exterior it comes with new goodies, with plenty of buttons and switches to satisfy even the most picky shooter out there.

When Full Time DMF is on, manual focus is immediately engaged by simply rotating the focus ring in any AF mode (AF-A/S/C).

The built-in Optical Image Stabilisation has a new mode (mode 3) with an advanced algorithm that ensures easier framing when following moving subjects.

• Mode 1 – normal shots (wide range, still life)
• Mode 2 – panning shots
• Mode 3 – dynamic, unpredictable sports action

There is also a new function ring that lets photographer configure as he wishes.

After this short presentation, the chaos began :). There were many people from different countries, both press and photographers and we had to split in groups. The shooting was planed to happen at the nearby Mercedes Benz World, on the track, but the rules where strict and the time was short.

Unfortunately we spent more time moving to one spot to another than the time we had the lenses in our hands. There was the middle of the day, outside, full summer, so the light was rubbish to say the least.

At to this the excitement of using an amazing lens (plus driving some AMGs on the track) and I barely have something to show to you :p. But I can show you again the photo with me holding not one, but two 400mm and roughly 33k euros worth of equipment in my hands :p

I wanted to test also the amazing bokeh this lens promised (and now I know it delivers since I’ve seen so many wildlife and sport photography made with it since its launch), but wasn’t able to get anything decent due to the “fata morgana effect” (a mirage, which is an optical illusion caused by the atmosphere; it especially appear on a sheet of water, in a desert, or on a hot road caused by light)

So, instead of the beautiful round bokeh I got this ugly stuff that won’t make any justice to the lens.

Case closed

I’ll end this little article with the hope I’ll have at least the chance to test it more some other day, if not owning it. Not cheap at all at 12.000 eur, but is there any diamond cheap?

I have updated the very first thing in the morning when it became available and the did a quick run to a nearby lake for some BIF tests.

In order to be able to show others what I see in the viewfinder and how Sony A9 behaves with the new firmware 5.0, I have to connect the camera to my Atomos Ninja V and record the feed camera send to it.

Unfortunately this mean I don’t get to see anything in the EVF, nor LCD, so I have to do the tracking while following the bird on the external monitor, which is a pain in the a..

But here it is, a quick demo of the new firmware 5.0

When I came back home, I wanted to try the new intelligent EYE-AF and I just got blown away by its amazing performance in tracking the subject (my 9 y.o daughter) even at F 1.4

Oh boy, I so love the new firmware 5.0 and I can’t wait to have the Interval shooting back in the camera, with the firm 6.0 which will be available in June this year.

Au aparut Sony a6300 si apoi Sony a6500, fiecare aducand noutati si imbunatatiri modelului de baza, ultimul focalizandu-se foarte mult si pe partea video.

Acum, intra in scena modelul Sony a6400, cumva plasat in gama sub Sony a6500 pentru ca nu are IBIS (in body image stabilisation) dar si pentru ca pretul este destul de mult sub a6500 (4.999 lei fata de 6.699 lei).

O parere strict personala:

Sony a6400 este cu adevarat urmasul de drept al lui a6000

Stiu ca multi nu vor fi de acord cu mine, dar consider modelul acesta cu toate noutatile cu care vine, chiar peste Sony a6500, chiar daca nu are IBIS, macar din punct de vedere al inovatiilor.

Este o camera perfecta pentru calatorii, familie si de ce nu, asa cum si Sony a promovat-o, pentru vlogging, ca tot e la moda.

Sunt convins ca deja stiti multe despre a6400, mai ales daca va intereseaza domeniul asta care se numeste vlogging si probabil ati citit deja tot ce s-a scris si ati vazut tot ce s-a filmat legat de el, cu tot ce a insemnat carcotelile legate de n-are aia, n-are ailalta, nu merge nu stiu ce, etc.

Eu o sa le demontez pe rand, cred eu, cu argumente concrete! Sa o luam direct cu prima:

Sony a6400 nu are IBIS (in body image stabilisation)

Asa este, nu are si cumva asta a fost si lucrul de care s-au plans cei mai multi. Nu spun ca nu este util, mai ales pe partea de video, dar:

Majoritatea obiectivelor Sony sunt deja stabilizate optic, si cumva ideea de vlogging implica un obiectiv wide, care nu va accentua foarte mult miscarile utilizatorului. Practic cu Sony 10-18 F4 OSS (vezi aici detalii) nu mai simti deloc nevoia IBIS-ului din a6500.

Daca mai folosim si un ghimbal atunci cu siguranta dispare complet nevoia de stabilizare din aparat/obiectiv.

Lipsa IBIS din a6400 a ajutat ca pretul sa fie mai mic si aparatul sa consume mai putin (bateria este aceeasi ca in a6500 dar tine mai mult).

Ecranul rabatabil al lui a6400 este pozitionat nefericit

De al doilea lucru de care s-a legat lumea la aparitia lui a6400 a fost ecranul rabatabil 180 de grade in sus, si nu in lateral cum e la alti producatori care ofera deja camere agreate de vloggeri.

Eu nu sunt vlogger dar sunt realist si va spun ca prefer oricand sa mă vad in axul obiectivului si nu in lateral. Veti vedea in micul episod “simulator” de vlog pe care l-am facut ca de cele mai multe ori mă uit in ecran si nu in obiectiv (greseala de incepator in ale vlogging-ului prin care toti “profesionistii” au trecut), dar privirea mă da foarte greu de gol pentru ca privesc doar putin peste obiectiv.

Daca ecranul ar fi fost in lateral, privirea ar fi aratat complet aiurea atunci cand te-ai uita in ecran.

Bine, bine, si cum te vezi, ca lumea spune ca microfonul blocheaza ecranul?!

Acum raspund si eu cu o intrebare: conform carui manual de vlogging este montarea microfonului obligatorie pe patina blitului? Adica de ce trebuie sa il punem fix acolo? Un mic bracket, sau un mini-cage (atat de util pentru montat alte accesorii extrem de necesare in video) rezolva situatia elegant, iar “structura” camerei de vlogging nu se schimba.

Lipseste head-phone jack, nu poti monitoriza sunetul din a6400

Va rog sa-mi aratati un singur vlogger cu casti in urechi, conectat la camera cu care se filmeaza pentru a monitoriza sunetul pe care il inregistreaza.

Sa fim seriosi, da, este nevoie sa monitorizam sunetul daca folosim camera intr-o productie video (dar acolo deja vorbim de monitoare si recordere externe care oricum ofera aceasta posibilitatea) unde a6400-le este ideal ca un B-cam, dar in vlogging?! Pe bune?

Asta a fost set-up-ul meu spre exemplu, dar se poate si mai minimalist cu un microfon mai mic si un bracket simplu, liniar.

Am ales insa acest L-bracket pentru a avea un grip suplimentar, in cazul in care nu mai doream sa folosesc mini-trepiedul Manfroto Pixi. Microfonul este Rode Video Mic Pro dar se poate folosi cu succes si VideoMicro tot de la Rode.

Si cum e totusi Sony a6400 in vlogging?

Sperand ca am lamurit “neajunsurile” de care s-a plans internetul, va las sa urmariti un mini episod de posibil vlog. Pentru lucrurile gresite nu dati vina pe camera, ci pe utilizator: nu mă vad sub nici o forma facand vlogging pentru ca nu mi se pare ca pot transmite cum trebuie un mesaj, nu stiu sa acopar un subiect, nu am un subiect, etc.

Bonus, la final am cerut ajutorul unui expert, care pe langa in a mi-l oferi, m-a si trollat fin (va las pe voi sa descoperiti si sa ridicati mana in comentarii :D)

Adevaratele inovatii din Sony A6400

Acum ca am lamurit aspectul cu vlogging-ul, sa revenim totusi la ce este a6400-le si ce aduce nou.

Practic, spuneam si in titlu, dupa mine este adevaratul urmas al lui a6000, o camera pe care o vrei mereu cu tine, fie ca esti in drumetii montane, sau cu familia in concediu, sau cu copilul in parc (sau de ce nu si cu catelul la plimbare, vedem imediat de ce zic asta). Ati inteles ideea, este o camera buna la toate, pe care te poti baza indiferent daca ai sau nu vreun pic habar de fotografie sau video.

Sony a6400 duce fotografiatul la un alt nivel prin prisma (in primul rand) a sistemului de focalizare, asistat de AI. Da, ati citit bine: AI = artificial intelligence. Ce face mai precis? Pai invata subiectul si stie sa il urmareasca mult mai bine: detecteaza fata sau ochiul subiectului (fie el acum si animal de companie, pana in prezent functiona doar pe oameni), apoi urmareste pattern-uri, culori asa incat nu mai pierde subiectul urmarit chiar daca acesta dispare temporar din cadru. Cum? Cam asa:

Ca un facut parca, dupa articolul in care povesteam cum setam corect camerele Sony pentru functia de EYE-AF (citeste aici), in noul model functia a fost regandita, meniul la fel, asa incat acum nu mai e nevoie sa apasam nici un buton pentru a detecta ochiul si a focaliza pe el.

Daca a6400 vede o fata, atunci cauta si ochii si daca ii gaseste (si o face foarte bine chiar si daca subiectul este departe de camera) focalizeaza automat pe ei, folosind functia de tracking constant pe ochi. Daca pierde ochiul, revine pe fata, daca pierde si fata urmareste subiectul dupa pattern-uri sau culori, cu acel dreptunghi pe care il vedeam mai sus. Iata un exemplu cu Andreea in parc:

Meniul a fost si el imbunatatit. Daca aveti timp 45 de minute si vreti sa auziti o engleza a mea de balta, am acoperit intreg meniul lui a6400 intr-un clip dedicat cu mici explicatii pe ici pe colo. Se pare ca a fost gasit util, pentru ca l-au publicat si cei de la SonyAlphaRumors.com.

Se preteaza Sony a6400 la fotografiat pasari in zbor?

Desi tracking-ul nu are nici o problema sa tina pasarea in focus, fie ca avem un backgound liber (precum cerul sau apa) fie ca e aglomerat, cel mai greu este sa reusesti tu sa tii pasarea permanent in cadru, adica sa o urmaresti.

Cu Sony G Master 100-400, la 400mm si luand in calcul factorul de crop al lui a6400 (fiind un model APS-C factorul este 1.5x), practic tragi cam cu 600mm in echivalent full frame. Daca pui si Teleconvertorul 1.4x ajungi la o focala de 860mm, aproape imposibil sa reusesti sa tii ceva in cadru daca se misca foarte rapid :).

Dar nu despre asta e vorba, ci despre faptul ca a6400-le este destul de lent la descarcat buffer-ul pe card. In rafala de 11 cadre pe secunda (after view) sau 8 cps (cu live-view, insa cu intunecarea viefinderului pentru fractiuni de secunda) reuseste sa traga undeva la 116 cadre (jpeg standard) sau 46 de cadre compressed RAW. Nu e tocmai un mini A9, probabil asta va fi rezervat unui posibil Sony A7000 (daca zvonurile se vor adeveri).

Noua functie interval a lui Sony a6400

Cu totii ne-am plans cand Sony a scos fara nici o explicatie aplicatiile PlayMemories din camerele de noua generatie. Probabil cea mai folosita dintre toate era aplicatia Timelapse, pentru ca e mult mai usor sa ii spui camerei sa faca ceva, decat sa folosesti o telecomanda cu intervalometru.

Iata ca functia interval isi face aparitia direct in a6400 si este implementata extrem de bine (si va fi disponibila si cu noile firmware updates in A9, A7 III si A7R III).

Avem la indemana o multime de controale, atat de necesare in realizarea unui timelapse de succes. In pagina 2, putem alege inclusiv sa avem prioritate la interval, mai precis, daca tragem in mod Aperture Priority si timpul de expunere devine mai lung decat intervalul ales (sa ne gandim la un apus), atunci camera va da prioritate intervalului, pentru a nu rat cadre si a sacada clipul final.

Unii ar putea carcoti iar, ca nu se realizeaza automat din camera filmul final, ci doar se salveaza imaginile din interval, insa pentru un control absolut, nici nu vrem asa ceva. Daca si daca vrem neaparat “film” direct din aparat, avem la dispozitie modul S&Q (slow and quick) si alegem acolo 1s la cadenta clipului, astfel putem obtine o accelerare a actiunii cu un interval de 1 secunda (dar nu mai lung).

La final

Noul a6400 desi este o camera entry/mid level poseda functii si un sistem de focalizare demne de camerele pro. Vazand toate acestea, ne putem imagina foarte usor ce urmeaza sa apara in gama pro, fie ea APS-C sau Full frame de la producatorul nipon.

Fotografia se schimba, fotografiatul se schimba, iar modul de creare de continut nu inseamna numai imagini statice. Deja aceste doua arte se imbina intr-un mod fascinant si cu pasi mult mai rapizi decat unii “conservatori” ar putea tine pasul :).

Inchei cu o mini-galerie de imagini realizate cu a6400-le si cu parerea de rau ca micul accident cu spatele (nu e gluma in episodul de vlog, chiar am ajuns la urgente) mi-a “rapit” din timpul necesar de testare a acestei camere.
