Those first weeks at home have a very specific feeling to them. Time moves strangely. Days blur together. The house is quieter in some ways… louder in others. There’s less structure and a lot of moments that don’t feel important until you look back and realize they were everything.

You don’t need to prepare your home beyond how it normally exists right now.

We’ll work in the spaces you already live in — your bed, the couch, a nursery chair — following the best light as it shifts. I’ll guide you for angles and light, but the focus is on images that feel alive and real. I may straighten a space we’re using, but there’s no expectation of a spotless home.

Newborn sessions are baby-led, always

If your newborn needs to eat, we pause. If they need to be changed or soothed, we take a break. If they’re wide awake and curious, we photograph that. If they fall asleep in your arms, we let it happen. There’s no expectation for your baby to do anything a certain way, and there’s never a rush to move on from a moment that feels tender.

Siblings are always welcome

Siblings are more than welcome and given space to be themselves — to peek, to hold a tiny hand, to climb onto the bed beside you, to wander in and out as they need. Those unscripted interactions often become some of the most meaningful images.

IF YOU’RE PLANNING A NEWBORN SESSION… I MADE YOU SOMETHING TO HELP YOU FEEL PREPARED.

Newborn fog is the real deal, so I created a beautiful one-page checklist with all the essentials for your session (and none of the overwhelm) — plus a few postpartum pampering tips to help you look and feel your best. Just a little guide to help you feel confident and prepared. Save it or print it!

My style isn’t about documenting perfection — it’s about telling a real, living story

The way you instinctively hold your baby close.
The way your home feels in this season.
The small, ordinary moments that are easy to forget once the fog lifts.

Most families are surprised by how calm the experience feels. There’s no pressure to entertain, no shot list of moments to “get through”. I’m there to notice what you might be too tired to notice yourself… the beauty woven into the connection and closeness.

If you’re wondering how to prepare for a session in your home, there truly isn’t much you need to do.

Before your session, I’ll share a few simple tips to help the day feel smooth and comfortable for you and your baby. I’ll also bring most of what we’ll need, including a small selection of neutral-toned swaddles, bows, and blankets.

If there’s a routine or moment you find yourself loving right now… feeding in a certain spot, snuggling on the bed, pacing the hallway in the early hours… you’re always welcome to share that with me. Otherwise, we’ll let the session unfold naturally, guided by your baby and the rhythm of your home.

This season doesn’t need to be clean or perfect to be beautiful.

It’s already enough.

Translation: you do not need a spotless, magazine-worthy home.

Here’s what actually matters when preparing, and what you can let go of.

Start with what your children already love.

Activities during an in-home session are never random.

Before your session, we’ll talk through what your kids are drawn to right now… the routines, moments, or little joys that feel most meaningful in this season. From there, I’ll help you choose activities that translate beautifully into photographs without overcomplicating the day.

Typically, we plan for one main activity with a few smaller natural moments woven in between. This keeps the session focused and enjoyable for little ones… especially babies and toddlers who thrive on familiarity.

Choose activities that feel easy and real.. not necessarily impressive.

Larger activities are always structured with ease in mind.

For example, if baking is something your family loves, I won’t ask you to bake from start to finish during the session. Instead, you’ll prep a few things ahead of time so we can skip the waiting and focus on the good part… little hands in the flour, sneaky taste testers, shared giggles… followed by images of everyone enjoying the finished treat together.

Alongside the main activity, we’ll leave room for whatever unfolds naturally. We might read a favorite book, play on the floor, or simply snuggle.

Before your session, I’ll have you jot down a short list of things that feel extra special right now. I’ll use this list as a loose guide to help me through the session… not a list of shots to get.

The goal is always the same:
To create space for real interaction while keeping everything relaxed and stress-free.

If you need inspiration for family activities, start here.

Activities during an in-home session are meant to be deeply personal… these examples are here simply to spark ideas, not to set expectations:

A pancake breakfast at the kitchen table

Baking bread or cookies together (focusing on the playful moments rather than the full process)

Bath time in the kitchen sink or tub

A quick run through the sprinkler or hose on a warm day

Popsicles or ice cream

Helping with farm chores or outdoor routines that are part of daily life

Bedtime routines like brushing teeth, reading a favorite book, or snuggling before lights out

Your session doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s. What matters most is that it reflects your rhythm and your world.

Hey there momma! Are you ready to create something beautiful together?

I’ve spent 16 years photographing families and babies and all the tender, messy, beautiful seasons of motherhood. My sessions are slow, connection-focused, and fully baby-led… no props, no pressure, just your little one as they are.
Whether we’re in my natural-light studio in Manistee, along the shores of Lake Michigan, or in the comfort of your home, my hope is that you feel supported, relaxed, and cared for every step of the way.

Learn More Book Your Session

Trust that the session is planned for efficiency.

You don’t need to stress about choosing an activity that takes time, creates a mess, or feels hard to stop.

I plan the flow of every session intentionally so those moments work for us — not against us.

If running through the sprinkler is part of your session, we’ll plan to end there. That way, we can wrap things up naturally and your child can keep playing without the stress of stopping mid-fun. The same goes for messier or more immersive activities… they’re always timed intentionally so everything feels smooth.

You don’t need to “perform” for the camera.

One of the biggest things parents worry about is whether their kids will cooperate.

Here’s the truth:
They need to do anything special.

They can be shy. Wiggly. Curious. Clingy. Loud. Quiet. Somewhere in between.

In-home sessions are child-led. We move at your kiddo’s pace, take breaks when needed, and follow their cues. Some of the most meaningful images come from the in-between moments… not from trying to get something “right.”

The small moments matter more than you think.

Some of the images that end up being the most beautiful come from moments that feel small…. the everyday, familiar routines and the ways your kids connect naturally.

These are easy to overlook when you’re in the middle of life with little ones… but they’re the details that often carry the most weight with time. They tell the story of who your child was in this season and how life felt inside your home.

While we’ll likely plan out a main activity, what we choose isn’t truly that important. Paying attention to these simple, ordinary moments is where the heart of the session really is.

There is one simple thing you can do to prepare…

Occasionally, I receive an inquiry that says something like, “My child has a short attention span, so we just need something quick.”

I completely understand where that comes from.

That mindset usually isn’t about wanting less… it’s coming from experience. It comes from days spent asking a little one to sit still when they can’t. From errands that take twice as long. From moods that unravel the second something wasn’t done right ( I see you holding it together during the epic melt down because you opened the cheese stick the wrong way)

After a while, expectations lower. Not because you don’t care… but because you’re tired.

You still want photos. But there’s a sense of “Let’s just get through it and hope for a few usable images.” (actually if I had a dime for every time someone has actually said that)

And that makes sense. Really… but…

I’d like to challenge that idea

A short attention span doesn’t mean your child can’t be photographed beautifully… it just means they shouldn’t be asked to sit still or to behave a certain way.

My approach is more of a baby-led approach. Which means it isn’t built around compliance. It’s built around patience, movement, and letting children be exactly who they are. Those “wild” little ones often have the most expressive faces, the biggest energy, and the most unforgettable personalities.. when we give them room to show up.

What changes when we allow a little space

With mini sessions, you might get a few cute images… and maybe that’s all you’re looking for.

The difference with my approach is that I don’t set a strict timer. I’m not cutting it off at a certain time or trying to fill up time. We begin with connection. Sometimes that means easing in and letting things unfold as I interact with your little one. Other times, they may immediately engage… they’re playful, curious, fully themselves… and we create a full, beautiful set of images quickly.

When there isn’t pressure to hurry, something shifts.

Children relax and personality starts to come through.

Allowing that freedom doesn’t always mean a long drawn out session. Sometimes it’s still brief simply because we’ve already captured a full gallery of beautiful images. The difference is that the pace comes from your child… not from a clock.

Even though I don’t work off a strict timeline, I know it helps to have a general sense of how long things usually take. For planning purposes, here’s what sessions typically look like.

Single Child or Baby — Studio

About 20–30 minutes

When I’m photographing just one child or baby in the studio, we’re able to move efficiently while keeping things playful and relaxed. We can usually connect quickly and capture expressive, personality-filled images in a shorter window.

This pace tends to work well for milestone portraits, or more traditional portraits

Single Child or Baby — In-Home

About 60- 90 minutes

In-home sessions naturally move a bit more slowly. We might read a book, explore a room, play on the floor, or simply follow your child’s lead. This creates space for curiosity, movement, and storytelling—without feeling rushed.

Families often choose this option when they’re drawn to a more lifestyle feel and want their child’s personality to unfold in a familiar, comfortable environment.

Family Sessions — Studio

About 30–60 minutes

I am always focused on connection and interaction but studio family sessions are a little more structured and efficient. With fewer distractions, we’re able to move through groupings and moments smoothly while still allowing space for connection and breaks when needed.

This can be a great fit for families who want clean, cohesive portraits in a predictable setting—without the experience feeling hurried.

Family Sessions — In-Home

About 90–120 minutes

In-home family sessions are intentionally slower and more fluid, and they’re also thoughtfully planned. That planning isn’t about scripting moments… it’s about creating space for kids to relax, play, and enjoy the experience without pressure.

If an activity is part of the session, we keep it simple and realistic. For example, if baking cookies feels meaningful to your family, I might suggest having dough already made and cookies already baked prior to the session. That way, kids can crack eggs, sprinkle flour, make a mess, decorate cookies, or sneak a bite… without anyone worrying about following a recipe or waiting on timers.

The experience still feels natural and playful, but the flow is intentional. That lets us focus on connection instead of logistics, and the images reflect the same joy and personality… often with even more freedom and fun.

Newborn Sessions — Studio or In-Home

Anywhere from 1–4 hours

Newborn sessions are designed to be deeply relaxed—never rushed.

This time allows space for feeding, soothing, diaper changes, and breaks whenever your baby needs them. There’s no expectation for your newborn to “perform.” Whether at home or in the studio, the pace is quiet, patient, and fully centered around your baby.

The post How Long Are Family and Baby Photo Sessions?

In-home sessions in West Michigan are some of my absolute favorite sessions. My goal for any baby or toddler session is to capture that sweet little personality in this season, but when I’m invited into your home it creates space for a deeper level of connection. These babes are just different in their own environment.

I get it if the thought of having a photographer in your home feels a little intimidating. Many parents imagine messy rooms, short attention spans, and toddler meltdowns… because, well, that’s real life with little ones. I’ve spent many years both photographing and living this season myself. I come with loads of patience, absolutely zero judgment… and a handful of my own wild stories to help put you at ease

If you learn one thing about working with me, let it be this: in-home baby or toddler sessions aren’t about perfection or performance. They’re about letting your child be exactly who they are… in the place where they feel most comfortable and most themselves.

Your home does not need to look like a Pinterest board

Please don’t worry about your décor (or lack of it), or whether there are mounds of laundry waiting to be put away. The years with little ones are full — and I’m not here to assess how “together” you’ve got it I’m here to document the beauty within this wild season, so one day you can look back and see just how lovely the moments were that lived inside the chaos.

When I arrive, I’ll take a few minutes to look around your home and map out the session based on available light. If something needs a quick tidy or a small shift, we can do that together in a matter of minutes.

I do adjust things as we go… clearing a surface, rearranging a table top. Not to create perfection, but to help tell a beautiful, cohesive story within the images. This is something I do regardless of how your home looks when I arrive.

The simple takeaway? A lived-in home tells the story of this season far better than a perfectly styled one ever could.

The light doesn’t have to be perfect either

Natural light changes constantly throughout the day… that’s part of what makes in-home sessions so beautiful.

Some homes are filled with big, bright windows. Others have minimal, softer light. I work with what’s there to help shape the story we’re telling.

If there’s lots of light, your images may feel brighter and more airy. If the light is lower, the images may feel a bit moodier and more intimate. Neither is better than the other… just different.

What is the session pace like in-home?

In-home sessions with babies or young children are intentionally slow and flexible… but I do give subtle guidance. I come in with a loose plan for flow but leave room for your child to be exactly who they are.

There’s space for breaks when they’re needed. And honestly, when those moments happen, I don’t like to stop the session entirely. A quick snack, cuddle, or a pause to reset… these moments are sometimes necessary but also become sweet, very real, images to remenice over later.

At the same time, I’ll gently move things forward when it feels right. If your child is settled and engaged, we keep going. If they need a moment, we take it.

Rather than working against your child’s natural rhythm, I guide the session around it. This balance of structure and flexibility allows us to create images that feel organic and unforced, while still making thoughtful use of our time together.

Choosing an activity for the session.

Activities during an in-home session are not random. Before your session, we’ll talk through what your child loves right now and what moments are really special to you in this season. From there, I’ll help you choose activities that translate beautifully into photographs… without adding stress or overcomplicating the day.

Typically, we’ll plan for one main activity and a few smaller moments woven in between. This keeps the session focused, enjoyable, and well-paced for little ones.

Larger activities are always structured with ease in mind. For example, if baking is something your family loves, I won’t ask you to bake from start to finish during the session. Instead, I’ll have you prepare things ahead of time so we can skip the long waits and focus on the fun parts — little hands playing with ingredients, curious tastes, shared laughter — followed by images of enjoying the finished treat together.

This approach allows us to:

Create beautiful, connected images

Keep the session moving without rushing

Avoid the frustration that comes with long, complicated tasks

Alongside the main activity, we may include smaller moments like reading a favorite book, brushing teeth before bed, building a quick block tower, or snuggling together. These simple routines often hold the most meaning — and they fit naturally into the flow of the session.

The goal is always the same: to create space for genuine interaction while keeping things relaxed, intentional, and stress-free.

Activities during an in-home session are meant to be deeply personal — here are some ideas to get your mind thinking.

If you’re unsure where to start, here are a few examples of moments I’ve photographed for families. These are meant to spark ideas, not set expectations:

A pancake breakfast at the kitchen table

Baking bread or cookies together (focusing on the playful moments rather than the full process)

Bath time in the kitchen sink or tub

A quick run through the sprinkler or hose on a warm day

Popsicles or ice cream

Helping with farm chores or outdoor routines that are part of daily life

Bedtime routines like brushing teeth, reading a favorite book, or snuggling before lights out

Every session is laid out intentionally for efficiency

You don’t need to stress about choosing an activity that takes time, creates a mess, or leads to frustration when it’s time to stop. I plan the flow of the session so those moments work for us, not against us.

For example, if running through the sprinkler is part of your session, we’ll plan to end with that. That way, we can wrap things up naturally and your child can keep playing without the stress of stopping mid-fun. The same goes for messier or more immersive activities… they’re always placed intentionally within the session so everything feels smooth and unrushed.

The small moments matter the most

Some of the most meaningful and beautiful images from an in-home session come from moments that feel almost too ordinary to mention.

The way your child stretches up on their tippy toes just to reach the sink.
The book they ask for every. single. night.
The butterfly kiss they need five times before they’ll even consider climbing into bed.

These routines are easy to overlook in the thick of everyday life, but they’re the details that carry the most weight as time passes. They tell the story of who your child was in this season…. how they moved and connected.

While we’ll talk through a main activity for your session, what we choose ultimately isn’t the most important part. Discovering and capturing these ordinary, beautiful details is my job and where the real magic happens.

If there’s something simple you love right now… a routine, a habit, a way your child shows up in your home… jot it down. Nothing is too small or too ordinary to matter.

Why this type of session is so meaningful long after it’s over

In-home sessions while your little ones are still young often become more meaningful with time.

At first, these images may feel simple — everyday moments, familiar spaces, ordinary routines. But as the years pass and rhythms change, those details begin to carry more weight. The way your home looked during this season. The flow of your days. Time is sneaky. Everything changes, sometimes without you even realizing it until you look back.

These photographs don’t just remind you of what your child looked like — they bring you back to the beauty woven into a season that may have felt chaotic in the moment.

Because these images are rooted in real life, they tend to become the ones that feel deeply personal and irreplaceable.

Long after the toys have been put away and routines have shifted, these photographs remain — holding space for the season that once filled your home so completely.

You don’t need to wait for things to feel calmer or more put together. These are the days worth remembering — exactly as they are.

If an in-home session feels like the right fit for your family in this season, I’m always happy to talk through what that could look like. Let’s Connect!

In-home photography is exactly what it sounds like…
photos are taken right inside your own home, using the light, spaces, and rhythms that already exist in your day.

But the why behind it goes much deeper than convenience.

For many families… especially those in the thick of newborn days or navigating life with little ones… this approach feels more natural, more gentle, and more meaningful than a traditional studio session.

Let’s walk through what in-home baby photography really is, how it works, and why so many families find themselves drawn to it.

What is in-home photography?

In-home baby photography focuses on documenting your baby—and often your whole family—in the place where life is actually unfolding.

It can be a way to photograph a brand new baby in those early weeks…
or a more unconventional approach to celebrating a milestone like a first birthday, without the structure or expectations of a traditional cake smash session.

Instead of backdrops and props, these sessions honor connection—capturing your baby within the rhythms of your home, surrounded by the people who know them best.

For families who want a meaningful alternative to traditional first birthday photos, in-home sessions allow the focus to shift from the cake to the connection… celebrating your baby as part of your family.

These sessions often capture:

Feeding, rocking, soothing, and holding

Tiny details you see every day but might forget later

The way your home looks and feels in this season

Connection between you, your baby, siblings, and anyone else who shares this space

How in-home baby & family sessions typically work

One of the biggest misconceptions is that your home needs to be “photo ready.”

It doesn’t.

I don’t care about your loads of laundry, sink full of dishes, or artwork leaning up against the wall that you’ve been meaning to hang for weeks. In-home sessions are intentionally simple and flexible. I come in, find the best available light, and gently guide things as needed… while letting your little ones set the pace.

The session unfolds more like a quiet morning together than a photoshoot.

Why so many Michigan families choose in-home baby photography

1. It’s Gentler During an Already Tender Season

Leaving the house with a baby—especially in those early weeks—can feel overwhelming.

In-home sessions remove that layer entirely.
No packing bags.
No rushing.
No adjusting to unfamiliar spaces.

2. Your Home Becomes Part of the Story

One day, your baby won’t remember this house.
But you will.

The rooms you pace in at night.
The couch where you feed them.
The light that pours through the windows every afternoon.

These details fade faster than we expect… but photographs can hold onto them.

Over time, in-home images often become about more than just your baby. They become a record of this chapter of your family’s life.

3. The Images Feel More Personal With Time

At first glance, in-home photos may feel simple. But as years pass, those “ordinary” details carry surprising weight.

Because these images are rooted in real life, they tend to age beautifully—and often become the ones families connect to most deeply later on.

4. Babies Are More Comfortable at Home

Babies can sense when they’re in a familiar place.

At home, they’re surrounded by known sounds, smells, and rhythms. That comfort often leads to calmer transitions, easier soothing, and a more relaxed overall experience.

And when babies are comfortable, everything slows down in the best way.

Is an in-home photography session in West Michigan right for you?

In-home sessions tend to resonate most with families who:

Value meaning over perfection

Want images that feel personal and lived-in

Prefer a slower, baby-led approach

Are drawn to storytelling rather than posed moments

If this sounds like you and you’re looking for photos that reflect what this season really feels like… I’d love to connect with you to discuss what a session like this could look like for you! Reach out here!

The post What Is In-Home Photography (and Why So Many Families Choose It) first appeared on Alissa Saylor Photography.

Preparing for newborn photos while you’re living on little sleep, cold coffee, and whatever half eaten snacks the other kiddos left out… is a lot. Clothing is the last thing your postpartum brain wants to think about.

Good news… choosing outfits for your session can be incredibly simple.

We’re going to talk about everything that photographs beautifully, what to avoid, and a few thoughts to help you feel like the most you version of yourself… whether we’re shooting in my studio or in your home!

Before anything else… think about the feeling you want

Some moms want comfy, relaxed looks that feel like real life… soft knits, simple layers, slouchy sock comfort. Others want something more refined or glamorous, a chance to step into a dress that feels extra special and elevated. Either way clean neutral tones will keep everything classic and timeless. The most important thing is that you feel good in what you choose.

Why soft neutrals are the real MVP

Oh, there are so many reasons I recommend soft, earthy neutrals over bright or trendy colors… but here are the ones that matter most for your photos:

They flatter every skin tone. From newborn skin to postpartum skin to dad’s “didn’t sleep either” skin… neutrals are forgiving. They reflect soft, pretty light instead of harsh color casts.

They keep the focus on emotion, not outfits. When you wear calm, understated tones, the viewer’s eye goes straight to your baby’s tiny face… not your shirt.

They create calm, cohesive images. Neutrals naturally blend with most homes and my studio, so nothing feels chaotic or mismatched.

They feel timeless. Trendy colors date quickly… but earthy neutrals will look just as beautiful in 5, 10, 20+ years.

They play nicely with all types of light. Natural-light studio sessions, cloudy in-home mornings, or golden-hour nursery window light… neutrals thrive in every lighting scenario.

Neutral doesn’t mean boring

When I say “neutrals,” I don’t mean only beige or cream or no color.
What I really mean is soft, earthy, muted tones… colors that behave like neutrals because they don’t scream for attention. These colors count as “neutrals” in photos:

Hey there momma! Are you ready to create something beautiful together?

I’ve spent 16 years photographing newborns, babies, and all the tender, messy, beautiful seasons of motherhood. My sessions are slow, connection-focused, and fully baby-led… no props, no pressure, just your little one as they are.
Whether we’re in my natural-light studio in Manistee or in the comfort of your home, my hope is that you feel supported, relaxed, and cared for every step of the way.

Feel free to add the spice!

A bold lip or nail color is a super fun way to add a pop of color! Jewelry is also an excellent way to bring in personality. Statement earrings, layered necklaces, or a special heirloom piece can elevate the entire look without overwhelming it.

Textures are a MUST!

Textures make your outfit interesting without distracting. Beautiful textures include: ribbed knits, linen, cotton gauze, waffle weave, light cable knit, soft woven patterns, chunky knit, silk, chiffon… etc.

Textures give your images depth, movement, and warmth… all while keeping connection at the center.

What to wear (for mom)

Postpartum bodies deserve clothing that loves them back. You want to be comfortable and look good.

Some of my favorite clothing options for new moms:

long, flowy dress

soft knit top + skirt or leggings

relaxed blouse + cozy cardigan

linen maxi dress

elevated neutral loungewear (yep! you can totally wear that super cute knit set you found during your 2am shopping-while-nursing-spree last night)

anything that doesn’t squeeze, pinch, or require you to “hold your breath in”

And one more thing…
If you can’t comfortably sit on the floor, lift your arms, lean over a crib, crawl after a toddler, or snuggle your baby without tugging at your clothes… it’s not the right outfit. Any discomfort always reads in your face and body language.

What to wear (for dad / partner)

Keep it easy and neutral:

solid tee

henley

lightweight sweater

soft button-up

chinos or jeans

barefoot or neutral socks (studio + in-home both work)

What to wear (for siblings)

simple cotton dresses

rompers

sweaters + leggings

soft tees + jeans (remember muted color, though!)

barefoot (always adorable)

What to wear (for baby)

For baby, simple is best… either swaddled or just a bum cover. Keeping clothing minimal lets all those tiny newborn details shine.

What NOT to wear (for everyone)

Tight, stiff, or restrictive clothing. If it digs, pinches, rides up, or rolls down…
you’ll think about it the whole session. And it will show on your face.

Neon or bold colors

Loud patterns + logos

Old sneakers or brightly colored shoes

Coordinating without matching

You don’t need everyone matching to look beautifully pulled together. Choose 2–3 soft, muted colors you love and find outfits in varying shades and textures within that palette. Most of these tones play so well together that you can mix pieces and colors freely without overthinking it. Picture mom in something light and airy, dad in a slightly deeper shade from the palette, and the kids in soft, textured pieces that fall right in between. It feels harmonious, timeless, and still lets everyone feel like themselves.

If we’re shooting in-home…

Shooting in your home is the perfect opportunity to fully embrace cozy. Elevated loungewear photographs beautifully here… think a soft knit set, an oversized sweater with leggings, or something relaxed that still feels pulled together. These textures look gorgeous in natural window light, and the comfort factor means you can snuggle, nurse, sway, and move around the space without feeling restricted.

A few thoughts from over 16 years of photographing tiny humans:

Lay outfits out the night before on your bed — you’ll instantly see if tones blend.

Skip self-tanner (it always photographs orange).

Keep hair soft and natural.

Hydrate a little extra (your skin will love it).

Choose comfort above everything else.

Presence is the most beautiful thing you can wear.

Preparing for a newborn session can feel like a lot when you’re juggling postpartum recovery, a fresh baby, sleepless nights, and a mountain of diapers. The good news? These sessions are beautifully simple… and completely baby-led… which means you don’t need to pack half your nursery in the car or deep-clean your house to get ready.

Whether you’re visiting my natural-light studio here in Manistee or having me come for an in-home session, my goal is always the same: keep your baby comfortable, keep mom and dad comfortable, and photograph the honest beauty of this brand-new season.

Below is a guide to help you know exactly what to bring (and what you can leave at home).

My Newborn Sessions Are Completely Baby-Led

Every baby moves and settles in their own natural rhythm… I like to observe and follow their lead the entire time. I’ll ask you questions about how your little one likes to be held, soothed, and swaddled, and we’ll use that information as our foundation.

I don’t use props, buckets, costumes, or staged set-ups. Instead, I keep everything simple, soft, and timeless so your baby’s little details shine… the wrinkly skin, peach-fuzz shoulders, flaky newborn skin, the way they tuck themselves into your arms… all the things that disappear far too fast.

A large portion of your session will take place with baby in your arms, because that’s where newborns are happiest. I also have a posing bag for a handful of classic newborn portraits, but the heart of the session is always connection.

Because these sessions are baby-led, they can last anywhere from 1.5 to 4 hours. We take breaks to feed, soothe, change, snuggle, and reset whenever needed… so the whole experience feels slow and calm.

Learn about newborn sessions

Book Your Session

What I Provide (So You Don’t Have to Pack It)

I keep things intentionally simple so you don’t have to bring much at all. Here’s what I have ready for you:

Neutral-toned swaddles

Simple bows + bonnets

Soft bum covers

A comfortable space for feeding, pumping, or resting

Toys for siblings

Refreshments (and you are always welcome to bring your own food + drinks)

I also have plenty of space for you to spread out, settle in, and take your time.

What You Don’t Need to Bring

Props

Elaborate outfits

A full diaper bag of extras

Anything that adds stress or clutter

Truly — keep it simple.

What Helps Comfort Baby During the Session

A Pacifier

Even if you don’t use one often, it can help soothe baby between poses. If you’re avoiding pacifiers, that’s totally okay… just let me know how your little one likes to be soothed (a certain hold, pacing, rocking, etc.).

Milk (breast or bottle)

Newborns tend to eat more during sessions, even if it’s off their normal routine. Bring whatever you need for feeding, including your pump if you might need it.

Diapers + Burp Cloths

Enough for 2–4 hours of feeding, snuggling, and changing.

A Loose, Easy-Open Outfit

Dress baby in something soft that opens down the front… like a zipper or snap-front onesie. We want to avoid tight elastic, marks on their skin, or anything that has to be pulled over their head.

This helps keep them cozy, sleepy, and undisturbed.

Hey Momma!

Get the printable checklist!

What to Bring for You (and Your Older Kiddos)

A Comfortable Change of Clothes for Mom

Accidents happen during newborn sessions… and I want you to feel relaxed. If you’re wearing pieces from my studio wardrobe, please bring nude undergarments so they don’t show through.

Clothes for Dad + Siblings

Soft neutrals and mixed textures photograph beautifully, especially with a newborn. For outfit inspiration, you can peek at my What to Wear for Your Newborn & Baby Session blog for simple guidance and visual examples.

You’re welcome to bring a small suitcase of options if you’re unsure — I’ll help narrow things down. And whether we’re in the studio or in your home, you’ll have full access to me during planning, and I’m always happy to look through what you have and help you choose pieces that feel like you and work well together.

Snacks + Activities for Siblings

A snack they love

A tablet or small toy

A book or game

I do have toys in the studio that kids adore, but something familiar helps too.

Water, nursing pads, peri spray, chapstick, breast pump… anything you reach for often in this season.

Optional: Bringing a Meaningful Item

If you have a special family item… a handmade blanket, your own baby bonnet, a loved stuffy, or a sentimental piece from someone important… feel free to bring it.

Is the Studio or In-Home Right for You?

Studio sessions are quiet, cozy, and very controlled… but in-home sessions have their own beautiful ease too. Both options create a calm, baby-led experience — it simply depends on where you feel most comfortable in those early weeks. If you’re choosing an in-home session, here’s a little glimpse of what that looks like:

In your home, everything your baby already knows is right there:

Your scent

Their favorite spot to feed

The creaks in the floors they’re familiar with

The natural flow of your family and routines (especially helpful with older kiddos)

And please don’t worry about the state of your home. Life after a baby is tender and messy and a little upside down — I never expect a clean space. We’ll use small pockets of good light, and I’m more than happy to shift a blanket, move a pillow, or tidy the frame as we go. Many families feel relieved knowing they don’t have to pack up a newborn and leave the house; everything you need is already right there, and we can create beautiful, connected images right in the midst of real life.

The Beauty of Preserving These Memories in Print

Newborn days are hazy and tender… and they change so quickly you almost can’t feel the ground beneath you. That’s why I photograph your baby’s little details and the way they fit perfectly in your arms: these are the memories that will matter years from now.

Many parents choose to print their favorites as:

an heirloom album

a framed wall piece

or a small gallery for their nursery

There’s something grounding about holding these moments in your hands… especially the moments you barely remember living. And these babies love seeing themselves as smaller versions as they grow… their sweet voices asking, “Was that me?” and wanting to hear every story wrapped inside those photographs.

A Simple Checklist for Your Newborn Session

The holidays have a way of speeding everything up — the schedules, the to-dos, the expectations, the noise. And yet, our kids? They don’t need more. They just need us and a little rhythm. Moments that mark this season as special (but obviously without adding one more stressful thing to your plate)

So here’s a holiday bucket list designed for families who want to slow down, savor this holiday season, and make space for memories that feel special and actually doable.

Everything here is easy. We are not striving for perfection… just connection.

A Cozy Christmas Movie Night

Pajamas. Blankets. Popcorn.
That’s it. Pick one holiday movie and make it your yearly tradition. Kids love the ritual of doing the same simple thing every year — it becomes its own kind of magic.

This is one of those nights where nobody has to plan or scramble. You just snuggle up and let the glow of the screen feel like early childhood all over again.

Drive to See Christmas Lights

We do this almost weekly during the Christmas season. It’s a Saylor family fav. Load everyone into the car in pajamas, bring hot cocoa in travel cups, turn up the Christmas music, and slowly drive through neighborhoods.

Every age loves this — babies, toddlers, big kids, even teens. There’s something about lights on houses that makes the world feel gentle and slow. Easy & magical.

Special Baking Day

Pick one thing. Truly — just one. We’ve done it all depending on mental capacity and energy levels (eh hem.. moms). We’ve done from scratch, boxed, frozen dough. Give yourself grace and pick something that feels doable and fun.

Options like:

Cookies

A cinnamon loaf

Banana bread

Puppy Chow

Muffins

A boxed mix your kids can dump in themselves

Kids don’t care if it’s homemade or not… they care that they’re doing it with you.
Take a picture of their floury hands or messy smiles. These are the moments you’ll want to remember.

Decorate the Tree Together (Even If It’s Imperfect)

Let them hang things where they want. (seriously.. don’t rearrange.. they feel so proud of themselves)
Let the ornaments cluster in one hilarious section.
Let the tree lean a little.

The joy is in the doing. Years from now, you’ll remember their tiny hands stretching as high as they could reach — not whether the decorating looked Pinterest-perfect.

Build a Blanket Fort + Have a “Glow” Night

Bring out blankets, pillows, Christmas lights, flashlights, or battery candles. Crawl inside with snacks. Read a book or watch a show. Let everything feel soft and slow.

It’s instant magic, and you barely have to do a thing.

Make an “Extra-Special Hot Cocoa” Night

Let the kids choose the toppings:

Sprinkles

Mini chocolate chips

Crushed candy canes (let the kids crush them in a bag)

Caramel drizzle

Reese’s cup melted at the bottom

Keep it simple. Maybe let them choose the mugs.

A two-minute moment becomes a big memory because kids feel the specialness instantly.

Do a Family “Yes Night” (Draw From a Bowl!)

Let the kids come up with a few ideas for each category, write them down on a slip of paper, and draw one:

A silly idea (inspo 5-min dance party to fav Christmas song, eat dessert before dinner, parents vs. kids pillow fight etc.)

One treat (inspo microwave mug cakes, popcorn in bed, etc.)

One game (inspo hide-and-seek in the dark, would you rather, freeze dance, board games)

Then say yes to whatever you pull. Kids remember this forever — truly.

Create a Simple Keepsake Ornament

Easy ideas that last forever:

A printed photo + a simple ornament frame (Hobby Lobby has lots of crafty options or simple popsicle sticks) My kids LOVE decorating a little wooden frame. These make super sweet ornaments.

Handprint artwork. Use fun colors, glitter, puff balls, etc.

A clear ornament filled with paper scraps in your child’s favorite colors.

Whatever you choose, add the year. Future you will be so grateful.

Make a Christmas Countdown Chain

Use scrap paper, cut strips, and let the kids decorate them. Inside each loop, write one tiny activity:

“Give a hug”

“Watch Elf”

“Eat a candy cane”

It’s simple, adorable, and gives kids something to look forward to each day.

Bonus: A Gentle, Christ-Centered Advent Rhythm (With a Free Printable!)

December moves fast — but Advent invites us to slow down, breathe, and remember why we celebrate at all. It’s a season of anticipation, of hope, of preparing our hearts for the most meaningful story ever told.

Advent doesn’t need to look like big projects or perfect routines. It can be simple, sacred, and woven right into your evenings with the kids.

Try small nightly activities like:
    • Lighting a candle and remembering that Jesus is the Light of the World
    • Tearing off one link of your Advent countdown chain and reading the short Nativity line together
    • Sharing one thing you’re thankful to God for
    • Hanging a single ornament on a tiny tree as you talk about waiting for Jesus’ birth

Kids don’t need a big production to understand the wonder of this season.
They learn through warmth, repetition, and the softness of these little moments — gathered close, listening to the story that changed everything.

If you’d like a simple guide to help you ease into Advent this year, I put together a kid-friendly Nativity countdown chain. Each strip is a sentence or two from the story of Jesus’ birth—ready to print, cut, and turn into a paper chain. Every night, you’ll snip off one link, read it together, and let your family slow down and breathe in the beauty of the season.

How to dress your kids for photos

(children’s photo outfit ideas that age well)

When it comes to children’s photo outfit ideas, parents often feel a little stuck. Do you go with that adorable outfit Grandma bought? Do you let your kid pick their neon-green superhero shirt? (Spoiler: please don’t. )

Here’s the truth: what your kids wear will shape the final images — not just how they look now, but how they feel decades from now. Think timeless, not trendy. Connection, not clutter.

Of course, what works best will also depend on the type of session you’re planning.
Is this a documentary-style session that simply captures your child’s current stage? A family session where everyone needs to coordinate? Or an heirloom-style session like my Legacy Portraits that calls for a more classic, elevated look?

The ideas below can easily be adapted for any type of session — the key is knowing the goal and feel you’re going for.

Should you let your kids choose their outfits? Here’s the psychology of letting little ones have a say…

Children dressing themselves is often about autonomy and identity. When they get to make choices (even small ones), it strengthens their sense of independence and helps them express who they are. And sometimes… it leads to outfits that are so wonderfully outrageous, you can’t help but want them photographed.

One of my sons is currently in a suspenders and bowtie phase. He’ll get up early on a school morning to dress himself before I can get a say…. He’ll be wearing his plaid button-down, tucked into denim shorts, suspenders, a bow tie, tall socks, and bright red rain boots. Probably not what I would have picked out — but so incredibly adorable. He felt “dapper”… filled with confidence, and completely himself. And honestly? I would LOVE to have photos of him in this outfit!

This is a great example of “self-expression within boundaries.” Kids thrive when they have options but not overwhelm. If you’re worried about clashing outfits, you can offer a curated set of choices that all photograph well (e.g., “this sweater or this cardigan,” “these suspenders with jeans or shorts”). That way they still feel empowered, and you’ll end up with images you’ll love for years.

Why some “outrageous” outfits work — and others don’t.

There’s a difference between quirky and distracting.

Quirky + cohesive: suspenders and rain boots, or a tulle skirt with striped leggings. These read as a character moment — whimsical, endearing, expressive.

Distracting: neon or graphic-heavy tees. The eye goes straight to the shirt, not the child. It’s less self-expression and more billboard.

Bottom line: If the outfit tells a sweet story about who they are, it likely works. If it tells a story about a brand, a logo, or a blazing color… it won’t age well.

One hard rule: NO LOGOS. NO NEON.

Logos, big character graphics, and high-neon shades steal focus from your child’s face and date the image fast. These are always a no.

Prints & patterns that do work

Prints aren’t the enemy — loud prints are. Choose patterns that feel soft and timeless:

Scale: think thin stripes, tiny gingham, small florals.

Contrast: low to medium; avoid stark black/white or color-clashing combos.

Palette: cream with taupe stripe, dusty blue gingham, soft sage floral.

Have fun with texture!

Knits, linen, corduroy, gauze, ribbed tights, quilted jackets — texture adds depth without visual noise. A chunky cardigan over a simple dress or cord overalls with a plain tee photographs beautifully.

Stick to a soft palette

Neutrals don’t mean boring. Cream, oatmeal, soft taupe, dusty blue, sage, muted mauve… Calm colors allow the focus to stay on connection and make coordinating siblings effortless.

Barefoot and free!

If we’re outside on safe ground or in the studio, barefoot is often best for kids. It feels natural and keeps the look simple. Tiny toes are timeless.

With siblings… coordinate, don’t match!

Pick a 3–4 color palette and let each outfit live inside it. Example: cream + soft blue + sage + warm brown. Mix textures, vary solids/patterns, and skip the identical outfits. (Unless you’re like me and have twins and it’s a compulsion to dress them identically )

The Goal: Photos That Still Look Beautiful in 20 Years

Their laughter, the way they lean in, the curl that won’t tame — those are the moments we’re saving. Clothing should highlight, not distract from, the love and connection in front of the lens.

I hear so often before a session something along the lines of ‘I’m not sure what you’ll get — my kids never behave for pictures!’ And every time, I smile because they are about learn that’s exactly where the best photos begin.

Kids aren’t supposed to sit still with their hands perfectly folded for an entire session — that’s not who they are.

I expect a little chaos. I welcome it.

When you let go of a specific idea of what “perfect” means… the kids sense that freedom right away. They soften. They play. They start being themselves again — and that’s when I see the magic.

With siblings, connection comes through movement.
We play games. We run. We twirl. I’ll ask them to tell stories, tickle each other, or show me who gives the best hugs.

Even simple prompts — “Who can make the other laugh first?” or “Show me your favorite silly face” — can flip the energy completely. When they forget they’re being photographed, the love (and chaos) naturally shows up.

And when one of them needs a break, we take it. I never force a pose. I meet them where they are and build from there.

Every sibling dynamic is different.
Some are gentle and quiet — some could power a small village with their energy.
Either way, I pay attention to how they connect and then shape the session around them.

If they’re shy, I slow things down.
If they’re silly, I join in the laughter.
If they’re fiery little opposites, I look for the split-second truce between the chaos.

After sixteen years photographing families, I’ve learned to read the room (or the field, or the beach!) — and flow with it instead of fighting it.

Most of my favorite sibling photos aren’t posed at all!

I’ll show them where to stand or sit and then let them interact with each other naturally.

I’ll direct their play a little, but what I’m really doing is giving them permission to just be together. Goof off, say silly things, and play. The interactions that they don’t even think about — are what turn into the most meaningful images.

Photos with children aren’t about perfect smiles — they’re about documenting a special relationship.
The way your oldest still reaches for their little sister’s hand.
The way they giggle at jokes no one else understands.
The way your baby lights up with their older sibling.

It’s the story of how they grew up side by side — and someday, it’s what they’ll hold onto when they want to remember what it felt like to belong to each other.

Please don’t stress if your kids don’t behave “picture-perfectly.”
That’s never the goal.

The goal is to see them — who they are right now — and to capture that fleeting, honest connection before it changes again.
