We posted it on our blog, put it into the portfolio and didn't think anything more of it. Then it wound up on notcot.org (thanks Brent Anderson) and got about a thousand hits in 24 hours, which felt nice. Then the next week Wired Magazine called wanting to feature the photo. Ironically it was the UK's edition of Wired Magazine, so I got to translate for the mother country and even chatted with the writer, not knowing I would end up being quoted in the article.

Definitely a first, and my Mum finally got to see some of my work first hand.

Credits:
Wired Magazine - UK

Tech N9ne Gates Mixed Plate

Having spent some time enjoying our images from Tech N9ne's latest album cover for 6's and 7's we were reminded of one of our other favorite shoots, our all-nighter with Tech in the Gates off main. Shooting the album art for Tech's Gates Mixed Plate album was great fun. Frankie, from Liquid 9, had a really specific vision for this set of images and we really enjoyed delivering on it. Favorite part? Easy, hanging out with the video crew at DB Coopers at 6am. That and winning some awards for the images.

Credits:
Tech N9ne
Strange Music
Liquid 9
Assistant - Ryan Yoakum
Retouching - Liquid 9

Tempting Treats from Blue Stem

While we enjoy shooting a variety of subjects, food has a special place in our hearts..or is it our stomachs? We recently had the pleasure of working with Megan and Colby Garrelts of Blue Stem restaurant. We were looking for an opportunity to capture not only final shots of finished desserts but images of the stages of preparation. Maybe it's my architect's brain that enjoys the building of things, the process of getting to the final result but taking photos of the stages of a dish really intrigues me...and let's be honest...makes me hungry.

Enjoy the images below, I guarantee you'll be ordering dessert with your lunch after this.

Credits:
Blue Stem

I Got Mad Skills. Now What Do I Do With Them?

Having made it past my 90 day probationary period with Alistair I thought I would lay out where I have come from and where the experience I have brought with me will hopefully take me.

My career has been spent working in marketing & communications roles in a variety of industries. I've worked in restaurants, publishing, radio, construction, and motherhood just to name a few. I have found that each industry and each job has taught me something valuable that I can take with me to my next vocational destination. Here's the main skill from each industry and how I can apply it today at Alistair Tutton Photography.

Industry: Restaurants

Position: Waitress

Skills Learned & How They Apply Today:

Humility - I am not above any job that needs to get done. Whether it's making cold calls, scheduling travel, producing invoices, building decks or handling pet-related issues. I don't mind pitching in to see that it all gets done and gets done well.

Diplomatic Customer Service - I can smile and try and see a difficult situation from the other person's perspective and work a solution from that vantage point.

Industry: Publishing

Positions: Marketing Director & Some Sort of New Age Social Media Title

Skills Learned & How They Apply Today:

Pick Your Battles - Don't waste valuable debating energy and time on an idea or a point that isn't worth the time you are putting into it, instead save that time and energy for the big battles that need it.

New Doesn't Mean Necessary - Just because everyone is doing it and the media tells you that something is "hot" doesn't mean it's right for you, your business or your goals. Do what works even if it's not the cool new thing, if it's successful that alone makes it cool.

Industry: Radio

Position: Promotions Director

Skills Learned & How They Apply Today:

Flexibility - Changes are inevitable and last minute ones are inescapable. Learning to think on the fly and not be afraid to reach out and ask someone for their help allows you to land on your feet no matter how many times you flip in the air.

Courage - Ask for something -whether it's a sale, a donation, a giveaway, whatever - the worst someone will do is say no, and 9 times out of 10 they will even do that nicely and apologize to you that they can't help.

Industry: Construction

Position: General Manager & Marketing Director

Skills Learned & How They Apply Today:

This is Business & You Get What You Pay For - It's ok to let a job go. If it's not right and the amount someone is willing to pay is only going to hurt the end result leaving neither you nor the client happy, it's ok to walk away. Business is business and if it were charity we'd call it that. If you don't set parameters or limits no one knows your expectations so no one will ever meet them - leaving everyone disappointed.

Industry: Motherhood

Position: The list is too long for this space

Skills Learned & How They Apply Today:

They are numerous but the most important one, juggling - Through motherhood I have learned to do numerous things at once. Listening all the while to make sure I get the information I need to deliver on what's expected. I also learned I have to write stuff down…because having children kills more brain cells than drugs.

These are just a few of the skills I have learned over the years that I plan to use to help me be successful here.

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://blog.alistairtutton.com/2011/07/i-got-mad-skills-now-what-do-i-do-with.html" title="I Got Mad Skills. We have spent time photographing not only their flagship Houlihan's restaurants but also their J. Gilbert's and Bristol restaurants. We actually just returned from a week long road trip with one of our favorite guys, Dean Woods from Houlihan's. We were capturing the beauty of the private dining rooms in both the Glastonbury, Connecticut and Columbus, Ohio J. Gilbert's. Our most recent tear sheet shows one of the images we captured at the local Overland Park location of J. Gilbert's. The ad ran in KC Weddings Magazine and we couldn't be more jazzed.

It's always fun to see the final product of our photography and when it involves food photography it just makes our mouth water. Be sure to keep on a lookout here for the most recent images from J. Gilbert's but in the meantime enjoy the ad below, we sure do!

Credits:
KC Weddings

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://blog.alistairtutton.com/2011/06/we-love-good-tear-sheet-makes-us-proud.html" title="We Love A Good Tear Sheet. This week we thought we'd stick with the musical theme but switch genres. One of our favorite local Kansas City indie bands happens to also be neighbors of mine, Antenna's Up. We spent some time with them recently in the studio getting these shots of the band. They are a great group of guys, a great band and great fun to shoot around the studio with. If you get the chance to check them out live, you definitely should they are well worth the price of admission.

Credits:
Antenna's Up

Tech N9ne's 6's and 7's Album Hits The Street And So Does Our Cover Photography

This is one of those shoots that was difficult to keep to ourselves. But we did it and kept it under our hats until today, 6/7/11 when Tech N9ne's latest album 6's and 7's hit the streets. Now we can finally share the album art with you. We actually had the shoot quite a while ago, it took a huge amount of gear to create that sharp red/ soft blue split that you've seen on the cover art on all the billboards and we carried it through on all the album art. Congrats to Sarah Thompson Lift on some incredible work with Tech on styling, congrats to Liquid 9's Franklin Oviedo and Josh Lambert on their superb art direction and awesome retouching. Of course a HUGE congrats to Tech on another incredible album. It was really good fun working with him again and we'll put up some more images as the week progresses. And we LOVE that our work is on huge billboards around town and on Tech's trucks, vans and touring vehicles. We couldn't be prouder.
And A HUGE Truck.

With the release of Tech N9ne's latest album 6's & 7's this week we wanted to share our excitement in a BIG way. Here is a shot of just one of the many billboards around town featuring the cover art shot by Alistair here at The Vox. And if that's not exciting enough we've got a shot of Tech's huge tour truck. They are breathtaking even if we do say so ourselves. Be sure to take note as you drive around town this weekend, we sure will.
This project was a complete refurbishment by Ryan Gale at C & G Construction, and is his personal residence. He stripped the interior to the brick shell and joists and completely built up and through that shell to deliver this wonderful home. One of favorite features was the private phone to the kids treehouse.

Architectural photography often times allows me access to some of the coolest examples of creative reuse of space and this is definitely one of those times.

Credits:
Kansas City Homes & Gardens
C & G Construction

Modern Kitchen In Classic Fairway

I have a really long and wonderful relationship shooting architectural photography for Kansas City Homes and Gardens Magazine - they get access to some incredible homes and it's always a wonderful shoot so this project was no surprise. It's a kitchen interior that was part of a Hufft Projects renovation of the entire Fairway, Kansas home. The home owners happen to be the owners of Carthage Marble and needless to say the kitchen's marble countertop was an absolute masterpiece. The other beauty of the kitchen was the soft finishes of the dining area.

Credits:
Kansas City Homes & Gardens
Hufft Projects
Carthage Marble

3 Steps to NOT Getting Hired

1. Send as your first introductory email one that asks "when can I come in for an interview?" without first expressing interest in the position by sending in a resume.

2. Failing to follow up with a 'thank you' or 'no thank you' email (or preferably written note).

3. Failing to respond to an email about a second interview but using your internet time to follow me on twitter instead.

In today's economy it is being said - and rightly so - that it's harder than ever to get a job. You know what it's easy to do? NOT get a job. I am in the process of interviewing and eventually hiring a new retoucher/assistant here at Alistair Tutton Photography, and let me tell you it's amazing how many applicants ignore the easy, little things that make the big impact. From the first introduction to the final job acceptance or even turning down a job it's the little things that are the huge differentiator between you and the 'other guy'. When making that first contact, don't assume they are going to interview you. You may feel you are 'God's gift to your chosen profession' but be humble enough initially to accept that you need to make an impression worthy of the call back for an interview. Sending someone an email with no resume or work samples and simply asking when you can interview not only rubs me the wrong way but strikes me as extremely ineffective. I want to know something about you besides your name before I decide you might be right for the position.

Once you do get the interview be sure to send some sort of follow up communication. I prefer the impression that a hand written, mailed note delivers but at the very least send an email thanking the person for their time and either expressing continued interest in the position or letting the person know that after meeting you don't feel that you'd be a good fit for the position. Everyone appreciates someone who saves them from wasting what little time we all have in a day. If after an interview you determine it's not the job you are looking for don't be afraid to send a note saying so. As an interviewer I am far more likely to hold no communication against you before I am communication that removes one more thing from my 'to-do' list. As the hirer I want to know that I should still consider you, that you are still interested and that you appreciate the time I gave you during the interview. An email of this kind would take less time than checking and reading your Facebook friend's status updates.

Once you have interviewed for a position and had more than one email communication about it during which time you continued to express interest in the job don't ignore emails from the potential employer. If you aren't interested, say so. If you are trapped under a large rock and cannot get to your computer to respond to email don't let me catch you updating your status on social media or sending me a notice that you are now following me on Twitter. I have trouble believing you are unable to return my email due to some catastrophic lack of WIFI when you are busy tweeting, facebooking and checking into every location on Foursquare. Think before you act.

Be respectful of other's time. Be attentive to communication. Be smart about providing what someone needs to understand your skills and experience. This ain't rocket science - unless of course you are a rocket scientist and then I take that back, Pay attention and DO sweat the small stuff, because these days it might be only the small stuff that sets you apart from your competition.

For all those who spent a moment to cross their t's and dot your i's you have my appreciation and for the final selected candidate know that you rose above the crop, by a lot for some.

Google Data Network Coming Our Way

Ironically it's not all about photography at the studio, we try to stay very involved with the local community around the Vox Theatre. Recently I was approached to work with other local business owners to try and get a Rosedale business owners group up and running (Rosedale's the neighborhood where the studio is located). It's been both a challenging and really fun process, where I've been able to meet some wonderful business owners and civic leaders and it's a very rewarding part of the job. Recently Kansas City, KS got the good news it would be the community benefitting from Google's installation of a 1GB/S data network and so we hosted a meeting to discuss it and got some great attention from the local press. If you want a giggle feel free to look at my on-air persona...Media Links: Channel 4 Channel 41 Kansas City Business Journal

This is the Magic Bullet

Everyone wants the 'magic bullet'. Everyone wants to know the one thing they can do to increase business and revenue. Guess what...I have it - CUSTOMER SERVICE.

Let’s face it — the immediacy of the electronic world we live in has made us impatient for recognition. When we send an email, leave a voicemail, comment on a blog, tweet, text, post to Facebook or update our status on LinkedIn, we desire instant gratification. We want the person we intended to receive our message to acknowledge it with an answer to our comment, question, issue or concern immediately — if not sooner.

Is this fair? No. Is it polite to be this impatient? No. But that doesn’t stop us from getting frustrated, aggravated and for some, downright ticked off that our voice is being ignored. Or is it? Are we actually being ignored or is the person on the receiving end just as busy and overworked as we are? Do they even have the answer to our question, resolution to our problem or response to our comment, or do they have to get that from someone else? Perhaps they are taking the time to formulate a well-thought-out response instead of firing back without thinking first, which is another issue we all seem to face. (But that’s a topic for a future blog post.)

As the person waiting for the response, we need to take a moment to see things from the other person’s perspective. While the issue/comment/question/concern might be the most important thing we have to worry about right now, it probably isn’t the same for the person on the receiving end.

With that being said, when we are the receiver we need to acknowledge the sender. That person has one main need — to be heard. While “satisfaction” might rank up there, initially they just want to know that they have been heard. If you work in a world where a committee decides everything and communication requires approval from several people, you still should respond to the sender. Temper the sender’s impatience with an acknowledgment — for example, “I received your message and will get back with you as soon as I have an answer.”

Consider how many sales and potential new customers are lost just because the customer feels they haven’t been heard. The most successful organizations have made communication and acknowledgement a cornerstone of their corporate culture. Take Zappos, for instance. This brand has thousands of loyal clients and customers, and everyone else wants to know the secret. It’s not magic — all they have really done is made the most fundamental of human needs a priority.

Great customer service doesn’t just make the retail world go round. Every organization, association, corporation — every person, for that matter — can benefit by acknowledging the need to be heard in their clients, customers and members.

How do you make sure you are acknowledging your fellow humans?

<category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="J.E. I was asked to photograph the interior re-fits of a whole series of Helzberg locations. The projet involved a lot of late nights, some interesting travel stories and some great experiences. The photographs we've included below are from the flagship location here in Kansas City. We are lucky to be so close to their flagship store located on the Country Club Plaza. The new merchandising cabinets are absolute works of art and the overall design of the stores is breathtaking. From the flagship - to the mall locations - to the free-standing stores - they are consistently brilliant.

In carrying out the shoots we had the chance to meet Parke Wellman, the architect who is responsible for this incredible redesign and she was gracious enough to say some very kind words about our work:

"I discovered Alistair and his team at the last minute, reviewed his extensive portfolio and determined that he has the eye for detail a retail space requires for photography. His schedule and flexibility dovetailed well with a retailer demands and needs. The multiple store photos turned out as expected and priced very competitively! We will be working again very soon."

Thank you to everyone at the Helzberg locations in Kansas City, Chicago, New York and San Antonio for making sure each location was well prepared and for providing the elements that made for such a beautiful end result.
Populous, Turner Construction and Burns & McDonnell partnered on the project and sent us on a long jaunt both inside and outside the stadium, capturing architectural photography of the raw spaces and lifestyle imagery against the architectural backdrop on game day. It really was wonderful, and I don't think there are many spaces I haven't seen at Arrowhead.

Thank you everyone for all the help in scheduling us for the shoots and in getting us access to the entire project - we even got on the roof on game day!

Credits:
Populous
Turner Construction
Burns & McDonnell
Kansas City Chiefs
3 Axis
Assistants - Ryan Yoakum, John DePrisco, Andrew Hoxey, Natasha Frederick

Email Marketing Is It a Reach Out or Just A Reach Around?

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 245px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mn3gIPvnp5k/Tac88WZoZjI/AAAAAAAAAEo/YjPxQNfrfK4/s400/Screen%2Bshot%2B2011-04-14%2Bat%2B1.01.02%2BPM.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5595508069534033458" />

A recent episode of poor email marketing execution by a New York photographer - who we will not name here as he’s already received his fill of hate mail I’m sure - created quite the stir this week about email marketing etiquette. While this example appears to have been a technical glitch the barrage of emails sent to promote various vendors, products and services is beginning to become exhausting. It seems to be creating a constant white noise in our in boxes that I fear people are ignoring on a daily basis. So what is a photographer, designer, printer or other service provider to do in order to break through all this white noise and get noticed by those we want to reach to work with the kinds of people we want to work with and do the projects we know we can kick ass at?

This is where we reach out to you to start a dialogue between those we want to reach art buyers, art directors, creative directors, marketing directors and all other job titles that fit the role and us - the photographer, the printer, the designer, the freelancer, the ‘insert vendor relationship here’.

What is your opinion of the emails your receive?

Which ones actually make you take a moment to open - and why?

If all email is just an annoyance and intrusion to your day how would you like to be communicated with in regards to resources that you need to source to get your projects completed?

We all have to work together to get projects completed for our clients so let’s try to start with our initial contact by creating a mutually beneficial relationship that works for both sides instead of assuming that we know what you want or how you like to receive information we are asking you to tell us. Share your thoughts, opinions, suggestions, request, comments or concerns with us here.

SB3 Chicago

So what happens when you put a bunch of intensely competitive commercial photographers all in the same hotel for two and a half days and just throw ideas at them? A lot, an unbelievable amount actually. It'll take a while to see it all sink in, but if even half the people I saw, deliver on half the ideas they came away with what will happen will be yet another evolution in the centuries old practice of photography.

So where was I? I happened to have the incredible good fortune to attend ASMP's Strictly Business 3 convention in Chicago with a whole host of professionals from around the country. I got to meet people that were just starting off on their career. I saw people I've reached out to over the phone and in person for advice, and people whose work just simply takes my breath away. It was pretty cool. It was the first time in years I'd actually stepped way outside of my immediate circle to learn something and it was fantastic.

The format started with a series of one-on-one consultations, with some of the leading practitioners in the industry talking about my portfolio, my business and my way of thinking - pretty handy. Then into a series of workshops subdivided by key-note presentations and roundtable forums. The workshops were wonderfully varied, open and interactive. The key-notes were led by inspirational thinkers in the creative industry, outside of photography and the roundtables were positive and open - pretty much exactly what you want from a convention like this - the perfect mix to really generate new ideas.

I happen to be new to this industry, in my opinion. I am new like one of those adolescent toddlers, kinda precocious and silly. I am just learning my craft, developing my trade, finding my way and really enjoying it. I actually hope that in another thirty years, I'll still be new to this industry, because I'm sure this industry will be new to me. That's the nice thing about photography, it doesn't stand still. Sure, it's moved a little slower at times but it's constantly changing techniques, developing new styles and engaging people in new mediums. This change is sometimes led by us, as the practicing professionals and sometimes it is led by the wonderful people that demand our images and clamor for unique imagery. That is what fascinates me about the industry of photography.

So what did I actually get from it? One of my favorite moments was when I skipped lunch to beat up on my SEO for an hour. Or it could be the keynote where it boiled your entire brand down to being awesome, think about it - it'll work. Or discovering that there will always be change and I am going to have to search within myself to figure out how to continually adapt to that change. But the one thing that kept cropping up - personal work. I looked at the portfolio and realized that I'm looking at the sum of all these years of work. I am looking at the best of hundreds of thousands of images, countless hours all over the country, working with wonderful people on great projects, but the ones that I liked were the ones I put the most of me in. That's when it hit me, that beyond the clients, the stylists, the reps, the camera gear, the mortgage, the software and the silliness what makes me a photographer is my vision, my desire, my beliefs and my interests, but above all me. I will tell you one thing, I fully intend to put a lot more me in my work because when I do, my clients are happy, my team is happy and my work looks so damn good I fall in love with it.

So, to any creative professional wondering if going to one of these conventions is worth it, I have to say wholeheartedly, yes! It will really help you remember why you do what you do and how to make it better for you. In sixty years, when you lay that camera/pen/pencil/mouse/[insert creative tool here] down that will add up to a lot more fun memories and a lot more success.

PS. The other highlight of the event was seeing one of my images in the new Find a Photographer video - pretty cool to see something from your portfolio make the cut, when they have over 7400 portfolios to consider.

PPS I didn't take a camera - I think I was the only person there. But I did take two ears, and I really hoped I made use of them. Enjoy the bonk, breakfast and Charlie Sheen images - my finest work!

Fruit Flies

A few months ago we were inspired by some work we saw in PDN and wanted to shoot some food photography using a fish tank and some fruit. The post processing on this shoot was pretty complicated and worth revisiting.

When you know you will have a complicated retouch ahead of you, its important to simply keep this in mind while you are shooting. This might sound obvious, but there are some things you can do during the shoot that will help on the back end. In this shoot we tried to get as many different shots of clean water lines as possible to use for composites, generally the more you have the better. We also tried to keep the water as clean as possible. Changing out the water to get rid of orange pulp is generally easier and less time consuming than taking it out in post. As much as I like pulp in my orange juice, lets face it, floaters aren’t attractive.

Once we selected the most interesting splashes, opening them in Photoshop and fitting them all together to form the composition we wanted was a somewhat subjective group effort. Several variations were made before we came to the final image. Doing things like converting the layers to smart objects to avoid data loss, masking out everything but the focus of each layer, and lowering the opacity of each layer until you have everything in place can help keep from spinning wheels. Otherwise it can be difficult to visualize exactly where to place things.

The next step in the retouching process was definitely the most time consuming. Taking out all the dust specks and orange pulp looked pretty daunting at first, but I saved a bunch of time by just making a solid black layer rather than trying to use Photoshop’s clone stamp to take out every speck. By making a black layer as the top layer and using a mask to cover the dust specks you don’t have to flip between different layers or tools. I find that simplifies things. You could also flatten the entire image and use the brush or clone stamp, but I like to keep the layer separate as long as possible just in case I need to go back and make another edit to the layout.
The only thing left to do then was cleaning everything up and making sure all the lines connect properly when moving from one composite image to the next. In the end the composited image took approximately four hours from start to finish. All said and done, we had a few new images for the portfolio so needless to say, we were excited about the results.

Midland Theatre - KC Magazine and Helix Architecture

I was thrilled in February to get a chance to attend the ADDY show in Kansas City and also to see the interior of the Midland again. I got a chance a couple of years ago to actually photograph the interior of the Midland Theatre for KC Magazine and it is absolutely breathtaking. Shooting it meant I got the opportunity to literally see all of the theatre, and really get a chance to get up close to the incredible restoration work. Without a doubt I'd love to thank AMC, for having the foresight, and Helix Architecture, for having the capabilities to pull off this world-class project. It's a real jewel for Kansas City.

Credits:
KC Magazine

Change is Good

“Change is the essence of life. Be willing to surrender what you are for what you could become.” - Author Unknown

Change is inevitable, it’s the only sure thing in life. Things are changing at Alistair Tutton Photography. We now have an on-staff retoucher/assistant in Andrew Hoxey and with my addition to the staff we now have a studio manager as well. We are growing and looking forward to all the future holds for us. New opportunities with current clients and opportunities with new clients.

Who am I you may be asking yourself? My name is Kate Crockett and I joined Alistair in mid-March as studio manager. I am very familiar with change and the opportunity it can bring. I am a navy brat who moved 11 times in 13 years and have enjoyed a variety of experiences in my over 15 year career in marketing. Change always brings some level of trepidation with it, like learning to work with new people, my least favorite - learning new computer programs or sometimes it’s just learning the names of your co-workers - granted here it’s learning the names of all four pups and yelling the right one at the right time to avoid incident. But change also brings with it excitement at the opportunities yet to be uncovered.

I look forward to the excitement of helping Alistair Tutton Photography expand it’s opportunities and I am thrilled to be working with such a great group of people. We are looking forward to launching an updated portfolio on our website so stay tuned for that very soon. In the meantime if you see me at any upcoming networking events please say hi and if you are in need of a puppy fix feel free to stop by the studio for some time with our furry friends.

Credits:
Assistant: Andrew Hoxey and Natasha Frederick
Retoucher: Andrew Hoxey

Congratulations SHS and Shatto Milk!

So the AAF-KC ADDY Awards and the AAF Regional ADDYs have wrapped up and we just wanted to wish a massive congratulations to SHS and Shatto Milk. We are proud of our long relationship with both SHS and Shatto Milk. Alistair Tutton Photography had a great night locally with wins for imagery we shot for Liquid 9, Houlihan's and the Vox Theatre. But the big win was for Shatto Milk - a whole bunch of Gold locally and of course the big Best of Show at the District Nationals.

The images we shot appear on the Shatto social media feed and we also shoot the competition entries. It's wonderful to work with such a great product and such a wonderful agency.

Congratulations, good luck at nationals and we're looking forward to the next big win!
When we pulled up to the exterior of the building it was very utilitarian and stripped down, and although we knew the function we had no idea how cool the interior was going to look. Basically it's a jet test cell for the Navy. They test small jet engines that go on trainer planes. The two views we're sharing are inside the test cell and feature one of the jets they would actually test there. The photographs are a head-on and reverse angle of the cell. You can see the control room, the exhaust and the in-take to the cell. It's a pretty amazing location and thanks to Burns & McDonnell for letting us photograph something so unique - you'll see it in the new portfolio, we're really pleased with it.
Tomorrow you'll wake up to a new mayor (we will probably find out that name this evening). I was very fortunate last year and KC Magazine sent me on a shoot to photograph each of the main mayoral candidates; Mike Burke and Sly James, Deb Hermann and Jim Rowland and of course, the incumbent, Mayor Funkhouser. It was a great shoot, and as it was my first time being eligible to vote for a mayor I really appreciated the opportunity to personally meet each one of these fantastic individuals. Good luck to the winner and thank you to all the candidates for their service to the community.

PS. While I may have a favorite, that's my secret with the booth, but I'll be honest I would love either of the two final candidates to be in office - we are spoiled for choice in my opinion.
Not here, that week is set aside for shooting test shots we've been dreaming about all year long. This year we were inspired by a few shots we had seen in PDN and other places and wanted to see what our creative minds could get up to when given a week of free time to play in the studio. Our friend, Layne Haley was up for the challenge to work with us to test techniques and lighting scenarios to shoot raw ingredients in a clinical way. We took 4-5 days to shoot individual items like fruits, eggs and other raw foods. We had a great time and thought we'd share the best shots with everyone. Enjoy and next time you are recovering from your holiday hangover just think we'll be playing in the studio and creating magic on our own terms. We love what we do.

Credits:
Retoucher - Andrew Hoxey
Assistants - Natasha Frederick
Special thanks to - Layne Haley
