A Little Moment with Baby Rayner {The First Year}

Slightly more than a year ago, I was privileged to do a maternity photo session with Junie and Gay Yong. It was an exciting experience, for it was their first child and my first attempt at maternity photography.

Subsequently, we planned for several more casual family photo sessions after Rayner was born.

And so, for the past one year, I followed and documented the growth of baby Rayner. I witnessed him as a newborn, attended his full-month baby shower and visited them at home again 3 months later. We also had fun at the Singapore Botanic Gardens and recently celebrated Rayner’s very first birthday.

Jaimeen and Kelly from Chicago came to Singapore last month for a short work-cum-holiday trip. They found me from the Internet contacted me for a casual pre-wedding photo session. Despite the brief period, I think we had a pretty amazing time together.

I have known both Dung and Wen Ho for a long time. They also happened to be the very first wedding couple that I have photographed. Now that they are adding a new member to the family, I am more than happy to take some photos for them in the final weeks before the little one arrives.

I wanted to do more than the usual maternity shots; I was hoping for something more real, uncontrived and unscripted. I always have this lingering question in my mind, how was the world like before my existence? What did my parents prior to my arrival?

So I hang around with them for a while in the day, immersing myself in their world. Nothing was planned or directed.

And they happened to have just collected a parcel from the post office. I watched them unbox the gift from Holland with a lovely tulip-shaped letter and many goodies inside for the baby.

I chatted with them as they sorted the baby’s laundry and we all laughed together over an episode of The Big Bang Theory.

A Little Moment at the National Museum of Singapore {Monumental Weddings: Wedding Portraits at National Monuments}

As wedding photographer, it is always a privilege to be a part of the celebration of a couple who is about to embark on a lifelong journey together. Sometimes it goes beyond that and you have absolutely no idea what’s coming.

Late last year, Gail and Chandra contacted me via email all the way from the UK to shoot their traditional Hindu wedding in Singapore. We met up few days before the wedding when they got back.

Chandra subsequently informed me that the wedding will be held at the Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple. Chandra’s grandfather, the late P. Govindasamy Pillay, a well-known and successful South Indian businessman and founder-member of the Indian Chamber of Commerce, contributed generously to the temple. He also funded the building of the wedding hall where Chandra’s family and members of the Indian community have since held their own weddings.

Early this year, the Preservations of Monuments Board contacted me after spotting the blog entry on Gail and Chandra’s wedding. They were preparing for an upcoming exhibition featuring wedding photographs taken at national monuments in Singapore at the National Museum of Singapore

Long story short, after several email exchanges and six months later, several pictures from the wedding have been featured in the exhibition, even appearing on the main poster.

Gail and Chandra are also featured in one of the four short films shot on location at the monuments, where they relate stories of their deep-felt commitment and loves on screen.

Consider that I have a two people from afar, who entrusted me to document their wedding in a significant location where the groom’s grandfather contributed, and later to be showcased in a museum exhibition, it is indeed a privilege and honor that I cannot be grateful enough for.

The Monumental Weddings exhibition is held from 4 September 2012 to 4 January 2013. Admission is free. More information at the Preservation of Monuments Board.

My dear friends Yee Cheng and Jiin Joo got hitched last weekend on Malaysia Day! It’s a pity I couldn’t be part of their wedding celebration in Malaysia.

Nevertheless, I am honoured to be able to document their pre-wedding months before. It was an adventurous day to say the least. The uninvited morning shower greeted us as we stepped out of cars, ready to catch the morning sun in the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Bummer. The second downpour halted us as we were at the Marina Barrage outdoor area. But none of these dampened our mood as we continued our journey, especially the ever-bubbly Yee Cheng. We meandered through the Esplanade, revisited the Hwa Chong Junior College (the common school for the three of us) and finished off the day with a magical evening of wonderful light at the Upper Seletar Reservoir.

Of course, my wife Jovie Tan of TheLittleBrush Makeup did the hair and and makeup for the day.

To Yee Cheng and Jiin Joo, we wish you both the best life has to offer and a long and blissful life together!
