DIY Jewelry Organizer

I never had a great solution for jewelry. I had things in jewelry boxes, drawers and scattered around. I wanted something to not only keep it organized, but where I could see it all: rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings together to coordinate quickly and easily. On a trip to Ikea I found some things that I thought would be perfect for a DIY jewelry organizer, in the kitchen and garden areas of all places.

{I apologize for the pictures. It's impossible to get a good picture of the back of the door in a room with no windows.}

I thought hard about where to store my collection. Once I started gathering it all I realized what a collection it really was. We don't have a lot of counter or wall space in our master bath nor did I really want a big mass of jewelry out on display which is why I chose the back of the bathroom door. It gave me a big area to work with which could be in plain site or could be completely hidden away. It was perfect!

SUPPLIES:

(most found at Ikea)

Bygel rails
Bygel wire basket
Bygel plastic s-hooks
Socker Plant pots
Ring holder
Thin ribbon scraps
3/4 inch flathead screws
Drill

Just purchase as many as you need to fit your jewelry.

I used three bars: two for necklaces and one for the basket. I used about six packs of s-hooks, one wire basket, and two buckets. I got everything for under $20.

DIRECTIONS:

Figure out the configuration on your door. I did short necklaces on top, long necklaces in the middle and buckets for bracelets down lower so I could see easily into the buckets. That just worked out with the panels on my door.

Install your bars on the door using the flathead screws and drill.

Now start assembling. Attach the wire basket to the bar and remove the metal sheet with the holes from the bottom. Attach it to the bottom of the basket by tying it on with tiny ribbons. Place the buckets in the basket. They won't go all the way to the bottom now that you removed the metal piece, but that didn't bother me. Fill your buckets with your bracelets. I have nicer bracelets in little jewelry boxes so they don't get tangled with the others.

Attach your earrings to the metal piece. Just push the backs all the way to the front if they are hook earrings and will stay on the organizer by themselves.

Place a small ring holder (found mine at the thrift store and painted it) between the buckets and fill with rings.

Attach the s-hooks (buy the plastic ones, NOT the metal ones so they don't swing everywhere) to the bars and fill with necklaces. I have two colors of hooks because I ran out and had to buy more and they didn't have the same colors.

I made this a few weeks ago and have loved it! Having my jewelry hidden away I had forgotten about a lot of it. This way I can see exactly what I have quickly and easily. I have been wearing it a lot more and got rid of some I was ready to part with.

Cheese Please! {Pepper Jack Turkey Wrap}

There's a reason we say "Cheese!" when we want someone to smile. It's because cheese makes everything better. (Sorry to those who are lactose intolerant) I am a big fan of cheese so I was excited when I was asked to share my childhood memories of Kraft Singles. That's an easy one. We always loved to take a slice and bite holes in it to make a mask.

My boys took to this practice right away.

While they entertained themselves, I whipped up some Dino grilled cheese with two Kraft singles to make it super melty and gooey. You can pick up the dino sandwich cutter at Wal-mart.

And this is pretty much how lunch went...

PEPPER JACK TURKEY WRAP

I was so excited to see that they have multiple flavors of Kraft Singles, Pepper Jack being one of them!

INGREDIENTS:

Tortilla (next time I think I'll do wheat or spinach)

Olive Oil Mayo

Sliced Turkey

Kraft Pepper Jack Singles

Baby Spinach

Avocado Slices

Layer the ingredients on the tortilla and roll it up. Hold it closed with a toothpick and enjoy!

I loved having a healthy lunch with a bit of kick from the pepper jack. I made one for my husband and he loved it too!

How to Curl Hair Without Heat

Here's a little tip I picked up from Deidra in the make up and hair tip class at the Breathing Space Retreat that has been a life changer, no heat curls. No really, this is one of my go to styles now. It's super easy, takes next to no time and gives you natural, beachy looking curls with no curling or straightening iron needed. Seriously, these pics are from the very first time I tried it!!

All you need for no heat curls is an elastic headband and barely damp hair. This is important, if it is too wet, it will never dry. You basically just wrap all your hair around the headband wear it for a few hours until it dries and then pull out and smooth. Easy peasy! I don't wash my hear everyday, so this lasts a few days for me with some touch ups. I actually like it better the second day when it has relaxed and is loose wavy curls.

Here's a video tutorial with exactly how to do curl hair without heat. It's much easier then trying to explain it in writing. It's kinda long because it has the before and after how-to's, but I'll let you in on all the tricks on how to make it work. This tutorial was on my second try. It is truly that easy.

My stylist friend Jami tried wearing it overnight and said it was a mess in the morning. I think the no heat curl key is putting it in barely damp in the morning and taking it out a few hours later after lunchtime. Then, use your favorite products to tame the beast. Also, I have naturally wavy hair, so that may contribute to the working well for me, but Deidra who taught the class has stick straight and it works for her so I think it should be pretty universal.

I hope you try it! I have done it four or five times now which is saying something since the retreat was less than a month ago.

Polka Dot Fruit Stand

I love the fresh produce that comes with summer. We're trying to eat healthier what better way to do it than having your fruit right on the counter to grab for snacks or even just remember what you have to work with. I have done a bowl in the past, but I wanted a fruit stand that could hold a lot and also add some color and personality to my kitchen.

FRUIT STAND

I love how it turned out, but just in case it is not your style, I have five others for you to choose from! This idea was actually born from a late night snack run with my roommates during Breathing Space Blogger Retreat. We ran to the grocery store, saw these adorable polka dot dishes and thought it might be fun to make stands with them. I love how each bloggers personality shows through a little differently.

Spray Paint

E-6000

Spray paint your candlesticks using multiple light coats and letting it dry between coats. Glue it all together with E-6000 making sure everything is centered over each other. Let it dry.

As you can see I put the top candle stick upside down. It fit perfectly within the ridges of the bowl and then left more room on the small plate for fruit or goodies. I decided on a fruit stand because it's not often that I need a whole display of goodies and it was way to cute to hide in a cupboard. I love how it adds a natural pop of color to my space.

It would also be super cute for chips or veggies and dip! Oooh, or crackers and an assortment of cheese cubes in the top!

Tie Dye Accessories

Tie Dye brings back lots of memories like demolition derbies, girls camp, and my brother in-law when we first met him. I was excited when I was asked to try out Tulip Tie Dye not only because we had a past, but because I like a challenge and wanted to see what I could create using tie dye besides the traditional t-shirt. Ok, so I did start with an old stained t-shirt, but I came up with these coordinating Mom and tot tie dye accessories.

Necklace inspired by I Heart Naptime

I had no idea why in the world I was making matching accessories. I have no daughter nor do any of my little nieces really wear cutesy headbands. Later, I found out an adorable family whom I adore was going through a big trial and could use a little sunshine in their life. Things happen for a reason I believe.

Ready for a little how to?

SUPPLIES:

Tulip Tie Dye Kit Including:
-Tie Dye
-Squirt bottles
-Gloves
-Surface cover

Pre-washed white t-shirt (mine was 95% cotton, 5% spandex so it was nice and smooth with a bit of elasticity and also does not roll as much when stretched)

Fabric scissors
Big wood beads
Gray spray paint
Needle
Thread
Felt
Hot Glue Gun

DIRECTIONS:

1. Lay out your surface cover and pre-washed shirt. Wearing your gloves mix up yellow and black dye. I did a black ombre shirt before this, so you can either use the dye for something else until you have about 1/4 of the black left and then fill the bottle with water to dilute to gray or just use less dye powder and more water to begin.

2. Use the squirt bottle to dye the top of the shirt with the gray using a sweeping side to side motion until covered completely to about 4 inches down. Then dye with yellow using the sweeping motion, but leave about 1.5 inches between stripes. Do not oversoak with yellow. You want the back to remain mostly white. Let dry for at least 6 hours. I let mine dry completely.

3. While the shirt is drying, spray paint your beads gray letting them dry between coats. I used 3 thin coats.

4. Launder separately in the hottest water safe for your fabric using the large load setting with a little bit of laundry soap. Dry separately in the dryer.

I actually loved how it looked as a shirt and was tempted to stop here...

but there was a small stain on the back of my shirt on the white part, so I grabbed the scissors and continued on my way.

5. Cut 1/2 inch strips from the back of the shirt on a diagonal so they are as long as possible. This will give the strips yellow ends.

6. Make a small slit in the end of each strip and thread them through each other so they are attached.

7. Tie a knot where you attached the two strands for extra security and to start your necklace. Work out from that center knot. Twist up the end of the strip so it looks like the top of a pointy ice cream cone. Slide the point through the beads one by one. You can make the hole in the bead a bit larger by placing the tip of some ordinary scissors in and twisting around if needed. Tie a knot on either side of each bead so they stay in place. Leave about a 2 inch space for the flower with five beads on one side and one bead on the other.

8. For the flower, cut 6 circles about 2 inches in diameter from the yellow striped part of the shirt.

9. Fold the circles in half and then in half again to get a pie shape. Attach them by poking the needle through the point of each pie. Rotate and fluff the "petals" as needed to get a nice full shape.

10. Hot glue the flower in place and then secure a circle of felt to the back of the flower for additional security and finished look.

11. Tie the necklace around your neck to the desired length using a bow. The ends of the strips will still have a bit of a twist from threading them through the beads.

Have you ever seen tie dye look so cute?

Just wait until you see the tot side of the coordinates!

1. Cut a 2 inch strip of the yellow stripes. Pull the ends tight so it rolls in a bit. Attach the ends with hot glue. Cute another strip about 1"x 2" Roll in the edges and hot glue over the seam to keep it soft for the little one.

2. For the flowers, cut a 3 inch square in the yellow stripes and a 3 1/2 inch square from the white. Cut out a wiggly shape like an amoeba. It does not have to be perfect. Now place a dob of hot glue in the center and squish to give the flower ripply volume.

3. For one center, take a strip of gray and make a rosette. For the other, take a strip and tie knots all along it. Then, wrap it round itself in a spiral twisting as needed to make it fit right. Hot glue them to the center of the flowers.

4. Hot glue the flowers to the headband.

Ug, I love it so much! It is just dying to be donned on a sweet little soul! I am excited to try some more techniques!

Breathing Space Blogger Retreat

Warning: long post with oodles of tips that I learned while at the Breathing Space Blogger Retreat at Daybreak.

Warning #2: Many of these pics were taken using Instagram so sorry if they are dark or grainy or you get the picture.

So, what is Breathing Space you say? Well, it was...cute bloggers, fun classes, awesome sponsors, theme dinners, salon trip, swag galore and a GNO sleepover in Daybreak's model homes. Fun? YES! Educational? Yes sirree.

The very first day I started out with class from a little someone you may have seen on Cupcake Wars.

Baking Tips from The Sweet Tooth Fairy {Megan Faulkner Brown}

I just love it when someone as successful as her is so down to earth and humble!

-Line measuring cups with plastic wrap when measuring things like shortening, peanut butter, syrup, etc to avoid sticky/messy cups

-Substitute: Graham Cracker Crust: crushed corn flakes in place of graham cracker crumbs.

Recipe for crust: 2 cups crushed, non-sugared corn flakes, 1/3 cup melted butter, 2 Tbs Sugar. Gradually add the melted butter to the corn flaked and sugar. Mix well and press into pie plate. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. (add 1/8 cup cocoa to substitute for Oreo crust)

-Equipment: Use ice cream scoops to scoop cake batter and cookie dough. Use the end of a big frosting tip to core out a cupcake so you can fill it.

She also taught us how they frost the cupcakes in the shop. Hold the bag perpendicular to the cupcake. Pretend it is a clock. Start frosting at 12, then do a circle moving in for a second circle at 11, then move in for a third circle. Ta da! {So it's a little crooked and pointy, I won't quit my day job. ;) }

Then it was on to...

Make-up and Hair Tips by Deidra

-For dry hair, put 2 Tbs Olive Oil in hair once a week.

-For DIY stick curling iron, take off the rest foot and unscrew the clamp arm on a regular curling iron

-To make lip gloss stay, wear nude liner under

-Shiny hair smoothie recipe: 1 Avocado, 1 Banana, 1 egg, 2-3 Tbs Olive Oil

Mix in blender until smooth. Put in hair for 10 minutes then wash like usual.

Store excess in fridge.

And wearing that shirt is about as close as I will ever get to a 5k. I am not a runner. Though if I were going to run, it would have to be the Dirty Dash or Color Me Rad because let's face it if I must run it may as well be with some spectacular mess making theme.

Morning came early considering we gabby girls had gone to bed oh, a good four hours prior. I had an exciting shower in our model home with no blinds. ;) Luckily, there was a surprisingly scrumptious breakfast provided by Chick-fil-a. Who knew they had such good breakfast?! We're talking biscuits, breakfast burritos, fruit, cinnamon clusters, yogurt parfaits and Simply Orange Juice. Num.

Becki gave awesome tips on how to figure out your style, dress your body type and skin tone. It was quite eye opening for many of us. I found that my style is romantic which means that I love girly things like ruffles, lace, basically anything with feminine detail. Pair it with a pair of jeans and that sounds about right.

Speaking of jeans, I was through the moon that I won a drawing for a pair of jeans from Vault Denim from the style class. Rocked these cute shorts for date night on Friday!

She is brilliant and can explain things so even the babies in the photography world like me can understand. I think she convinced me to splurge for a big girl camera for my birthday coming up so let me know if you have any recommendations.

Our last theme dinner was to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Aly and I were really in the spirit of things.

All in all, it was a great time and I would totally do it again!

Business Card Inspiration & Roommate Gifts

It's been a busy couple of weeks with the SNAP Conference and then the Breathing Space Retreat. Thought I would share my business cards and roommate gifts for a little inspiration. They all had a little something to make them special.

I had standard business cards printed, but wanted something to make them pop. I decided it would be fun to do a clip that people could pull off to use as a bookmark. I found the talking bubble paper clips and they were perfect. Add a tiny ribbon and I had a card that was a little more me.

As for roommate gift, this was the first time I had done them. I was introduced to this concept just a few days before the conference so I had to put something together quick. I decided a conference survival kit would be great.

I put together all the things that are nice to have, but are often forgotten on the packing list: notebook, pen, mints, chapstick, and designer band-aids (for those rubbing shoes). Tie them up with baker's twine and you have a pretty cute gift.

The best part was one roommate mentioned she forgot her notebook, one said it would be nice to have mints, and one needed band-aids for her shoes! Yay for success!

For the Breathing Space Blogger Retreat I wanted a roommate gift that went along with the theme of taking time for yourself and relaxing. I was thrilled to see a Lemon Sugar Scrub recipe on The Idea Room and knew it would be perfect! I used coconut oil instead of almond so it turns solid at 76 degrees and liquid at 77 degrees. Kinda fun!

I loved Amy's packaging, but I have a ton of baby food jars saved up for occasions like this so I spray painted the lids and stamped a little tag that says "When life gives you lemons.." I thought it was a fun play on words for lemon or shall we call it lemonade sugar scrub.

Not Your Mama's Food Storage

I have always been one to like to be prepared. I try to keep my car with at least a half tank of gas, I have 72 hour kits and have been building up my food storage. Though there is one thing with food storage. I have it for emergencies, but what in the world am I going to do with 50 pounds of hard wheat, a can of shortening and dry milk? Seriously, I have the stuff, but I am no whiz at what to do with it. I don't cook with it on a normal basis so how happy was I when I took a look at my sponsor Krisi's list of options from Shelf Reliance.

Hello, were talking freeze dried raspberries, baked potato cheese soup, sour cream powder and ice cream sandwiches?! Now that's what I call food storage. SNAP* Just Be You!

If there is one thing I learned at the SNAP Conference it is that I can be me and that is the best person for me to be. Like Oscar Wilde said,"Be you, everyone else is already taken."

Not that I ever was untrue to myself here, I just sometimes thought, "What are my goals here? I'm not going for a book deal or a handmade shop. I'm not set on being on TV or becoming a social media consultant. So what am I doing?" What I am doing is sharing a piece of myself in hopes that some other woman out there will take a look and say, "Wow, if she can do that, I bet I can too." I am just here to share and am totally honored that you come here to read. I feel like we're friends though I may never "meet" many of you. But, I hope I can share with you the real me even if it's only online.

I am not perfect. (Ha, there's a big surprise right). I do stupid things. Like at SNAP when I could not get the automatic paper towel dispenser to well, dispense. I did a little jig in front of it as my offering to the paper towel Gods only to find out later that one of the bloggers I admire was there to witness it. How do I know? Cause she said,"Weren't you the one dancing in the bathroom?" when I introduced myself later that day. Gah, hello red face of embarrassment. I guess at least she saw the real (somewhat silly and borderline weird) me, before I was able to hide it under my shy, nervous, you are totally awesome and I lose my words in your presence introduction.

Puppet Playhouse & Craft It! Kit {GIVEAWAY}

I am so excited to share what we have in store today! It's one of those projects that makes my heart smile when I think about it. My kiddos and I created a puppet playhouse along with some animal puppets to go along. With spring break and summer on it's way it is a super fun way to bust the "I'm Bored" streak!

I was excited when Elmer's contacted me about their Craft it! Community! Craft it! is a place for creative gals to share their creations and project ideas, gain inspiration and seek crafting advice. I love having a place to visit filled with people who "get it." You know, people who don't think it's weird that you keep 10 different types of adhesive on hand at all times and may even have an entire drawer dedicated to them.

We got a box in the mail and it was like Christmas! So many fun X-acto and Elmer's things to create with!! We decided to make a puppet playhouse and various puppets so we would have a project for mommy's strong opinion, but also some pieces the kids could do to their specifications. The kids had a blast putting together the puppets and putting on little shows.

Puppet Supplies:

Scrap Paper & Cardstock

Popsicle sticks

Googly Eyes

Scissors

X-acto Corner Punch

Elmer's Permanent Dot Runner

Elmer's Foam Adhesive Roll (for pig nose)

Painter's Marker in White (for tiger fur)

For the puppets I cut out simple shapes for the bodies and heads (since my little one is still learning the ins and outs of scissors) and let him glue them all together with the dot runner. Many of the heads were just squares that I rounded with the corner punch. So easy!! You can see the basic shapes we used in the pictures below.

The puppets turned out so sweet and with so much more personality than if I would have done them on my own. I did the fringe for the mane after we glued it with the little precision tip scissors. This little lion just oozes cute factor!

My son insisted that I needed a Miss Piggy complete with blonde hair. We used the a piece of the foam adhesive roll to make the snout 3-D.

I didn't even realize when I was cutting this snake out that I was giving him a frown. My little guy was nice enough to point out that he was sad because he had lost his mother and that Miss Piggy would adopt him.

I love how Mr. Octopus looks like he's taking a step. My little guy also pointed out that the polka dots were suction cups. So creative these little ones!

We added some whiskers and fur on the tiger with the white Painter's marker. It was surprisingly easy to use except for the slight mishap on the tail getting the paint flowing in the beginning.

By now my kiddos were ready for a break so off to naps they went and I decided to tackle the X-acto knife work and puppet playhouse without the little hands.

Puppet Playhouse Supplies:

2 Elmer's Bifold Foam

X-acto Self-Healing Mat

X-acto Metal Ruler

Packing tape

X-acto Knife

Scissors

3 12x12 Polka Dot Paper

Red Cardstock

Yellow Cardstock

Elmer's Permanant Dot Runner

Elmer's Quick Dry Glue Pen

Glitter Foam Adhesive Stars

1. Open the two bi-fold foam boards and lay flat with the short ends together. Tape the two boards together with packing tape. Lay the center of the board on the self-healing mat and using the ruler and X-acto knife cut out a 6 inch by 12 inch rectangle about 1.5 inches from the top of the board.

2. Using the permanant dot runner around the edges, adhere your polka dot paper over the entire front of the board. I cut slits in the paper where the board folds so it could still fold flat when not in use.

3.Cut a bunch of little rectangles (about 1" x 2") out of yellow cardstock. Round the bottom edges with the corner punch. Glue the rectangles on the bottom of the "stage" by doing a line with the glue runner on the bottom edge of the stage on both sides and about and inch down from the bottom on the front. Also do a thin line of the Elmer's quick dry pen where the foam is rough from the X-acto knife. Fold the rectangles over the edge of the stage one by one.

4. Cut 4 curtain shapes from the red, two slightly larger than the other and layer them to look like curtains. Cut a little piece of yellow cardstock to look like a curtain tie back. Glue them on with the permanent dot runner.

5. Stick the stars on the top of the stage.

The best is that it still folds flat for storage!

Pine Car Scout Awards

It's derby time! We just had our Cub Scout Pine Wood Derby and as one of the leaders, I was asked to make the awards. I am still new to Cub Scouts, but here's what I came up with.

They turned out pretty cute and were quite simple to make!

Supplies:

Small Wooden Crate (Michael's)

Sandpaper

Yellow Cardstock

Blue Cardstock

Checkered Paper

Double-sided Tape

14 Gauge Utility Wire (Lowe's)

Pliers

Scissors

Toothpicks

Checkered Duck Tape

Elmer's White Glue

Matchbox Cars

E-6000

I was going to spray paint the cars silver, but the ones I got ended up matching really well.

1. I got the "crates" which were more like little baskets with handles from Michael's for $1 each. Break off the handles and sand flat. You can see the little circles where I broke the handles off.

2. Make a circle from the yellow cardstock and a slightly larger circle from the blue cardstock. Make an even larger circle from the checkered paper (it will be about 4 inches across). Tape them all together.

3. Cut 1/4-1/8 inch slits all around the checkered paper to fringe. Give it a more 3D look by bending the fringe toward the circles having some strips bending ore than others.

4. Use your pliers and fingers to bend pieces of the utility wire in to 1, 2, 3, and S (for sportsmanship).

5. Snip one of the end of the toothpicks. Cover the other end by folding a strip of checkered duct tape around the toothpick to look like a flag.

6. Glue the wire numbers to the paper circles with little dots of E-6000.

7. Glue the paper circle badge to the crate with the Elmer's white glue.

8. Cut a rectangle out of the blue cardstock and round one end. Glue it to the crate as the backdrop for the car. Lay it down to dry and glue the flags on while the backdrop is laying horizontal.

9. Once dry, stand it up and glue the car on the top of the crate using dots of E-6000 on the wheels.

We did the sportsmanship slightly different. It get's the paper badge, but then instead of a car on top, we filled the crate with the candy and closed it in with the checkered duck tape. Candy is a great motivator with boys this age.

DIY Under $5 {Hangers with Names}

This week I tried a really fun project using the tutorial from A Law Student's Journey that was featured on last week's party for hangers with names.

I had a bridal shower and wanted something fun and personalized to go with the standard item from the registry. I love the idea of these personalized bridal hangers! The only thing varied from the tutorial was adding a ribbon and spray painting the hanger blue so it could be her "something blue." I got that inspiration here.

Not bad for a first attempt at wire bending.

Swinging in the Snow

Ever have one of those days where your to do list is longer than your arm and your kids are staring up at you begging for your attention?

A few weeks ago I had one of those days. I was showered and ready by 8 am because the list of responsibilities piling up was high and there was no time to waste. The whole family was dressed and at the breakfast table by 8:30. I opened up the blinds to unveil 6 inches of perfect snow (in March). The kids went crazy and begged to go out and play.

I thought about getting them snow clothes, boots and hats, then thought about how we were all dressed in clean dry clothes with hair styled. I thought about how one of my four year old’s favorite things to do is eat snow and then I thought of my ever growing to do list. As the usual internal battle began, I ended it. The list could wait, but the snow and those eager looks on my little ones faces could not.

We bundled up in our snow suits and headed out, adorning the gorgeous glittering blanket of white with our footprints. The world was at peace, silent except for the sounds of pure joy from my boys.
We tried to build a snowman to no avail, the snow was unrollable powder. The snow was so deep that my stubby legged baby kept tripping in his boots and though he would catch himself with his arms, they were too short and his face whitewashed each and every time. But, none of that mattered. What would have ruined an ordinary day could not touch this beautiful morning.

Then came the pinnacle. My little one looked to the sky and spotted his red swing still attached to our tree covered in snow. His big eyes met mine and he signed, “please.” I lifted him up and gave him a big push. He grinned ear to ear and squealed with excitement. It was at this moment that I knew all was right. I was where I was supposed to be. I realized that life was short and it is about enjoying the time with family. It’s about singing in the rain and swinging in the snow. My four year old got all the snow he could eat, my little one flew through the chilly air, and I got a full heart and an unforgettable memory with my two little ones tromping through a blanket of white.
