The social mobile community Pinterest – where people “pin” images to “boards” and share them on the Web and through...

The social mobile community Pinterest – where people “pin” images to “boards” and share them on the Web and through Facebook and Twitter – is taking the world by storm. Last year was Instagram‘s year, but 2012 is the year Pinterest exploded in popularity.

But what is Pinterest, exactly? I recently defined it for a friend like this:

Pinterest is a social network around images – like Instagram -but where Instagram has developed into more of a “life image stream,” Pinterest tends to be more “aspirational”

You can create “boards” which are topic-based and categorized, and you can add to those boards either via a bookmarklet that you can add to your Web browser or via the free Pinterest iPhone app. But why would you want to get a Pinterest account (at the moment, you need to ask for an invitation to get in – if you need one, let me know)?

Here are 3 straight-forward ways you can use Pinterest…

1. To “bookmark” things you like

While there are a number of more clear-cut bookmarketing sites for links to content such as Delicious, you can use Pinterest to save images for a variety of uses. Whether you’re decorating your home or redesigning a website, as you browse websites researching your project, you can “pin” images and designs that catch your eye. Then you can refer back to what you’ve saved to Pinterest for inspiration.

Beth Kanter has a rich Pinterest profile and includes a variety of images covering a range of topics from Social Media Tips and Best Practices…

To African fabrics…

2. To define your personal brand

Beth Kanter’s Boards above illustrate her diverse tastes and interests. Another example of a Pinterest profile that showcases a personality and sensibility is that of Mariel Hemingway. When you view her boards, you get an instant first impression. With boards like Nature, A New Earth, and Simplicity, you begin to get a sense of the image Mariel wants to project.

3. To promote what you do

From artists and photographers to crafters and hobbyists, Pinterest can be used to visually promote what someone does.

For example, Rachel Durik, a photographer and mom, showcases her work and her inspiration on Pinterest. She even wrote this great post about How to Use Pinterest for Photographers.

Brands are getting into the action as well. Here is the Pinterest for Whole Foods. You immediately see their brand attributes coming through as they pin images related to healthy living, food, home, lifestyle and recycling.

One of my clients, Wine Sisterhood, is using Pinterest in a variety of ways including creating Boards to showcase the cities where they’ll be attending food and wine events.

Because they are a lifestyle brand, pinning images of food, travel, entertainment and wine accessories makes sense. They can also promote their products by including interesting shots of their products in use or in relevant environments rather than just product glamour shots. Then they can leverage these pinned images beyond Pinterest, feeding it into their website or posting select ones to their Facebook Page.

Pinterest gives you the ability to curate eye candy. Turning that into something useful isn’t a big stretch as thousands of people are discovering.

Now that I’m sending out a weekly email, I panic about sending the wrong one or incorrect information or broken...

Now that I’m sending out a weekly email, I panic about sending the wrong one or incorrect information or broken links. Today several things happened that brought home the risk of sending emails to a list.

First, my weekly email went out, and I received a response from a subscriber about all the broken links. Mortified, I went back and checked the version I received, and everything worked. I suspect it was something on the recipient’s end as I didn’t hear any other questions or complaints, but a mistake like that could trigger a rash of unsubscribes. Thankfully, this one did not.

Second, a gal I know who puts out frequent email newsletters and messages sent an email about her upcoming webinar. I clicked to attend and arrived at a page about purchasing a product, not a registration for the free webinar. A little while later, the corrected email came through. Again I was reminded of the risks of errors in our emails.

Finally, I received this email from a company called Fetchnotes:

Talk about an error in an email! I can only imagine how mortified the company must have been. A few minutes later, this email apology arrived:

Within the hour, this apology arrived:

While the response wasn’t perfect – sending two more emails after an offending one isn’t ideal – it was swift. And the second email did offer further details.

What the company did absolutely right in the second apology was fully owning up to the error (the first apology took a more light-hearted, joking tone which wasn’t as effective).

We are all moving so quickly, toggling between our emails, our social networks, our work. Before hitting send, we need to take a breath and re-read. Better yet, have someone else read it or at least step away for a moment and come back with fresh eyes.

Other tips to avoid an email faux pas?

Test links.

Don’t use foul language, even in test emails.

How do you think Fetchnotes handled this error? Would you have done anything different?

Subscribe to my Weekly emails – get my QR Basics Handbook

I was recently pointed to the web tool If This Then That (ifttt) by my friend Theda Sandiford, and I’m simply amazed. Using ifttt, you can create “tasks” where one action triggers another action, usually involving online communications.

The best way to describe ifttt is to give you concrete examples. You could program the following:

“If I post a photo to Instagram using the tag #travel, trigger the action of posting that photo to my Facebook Page.”

“If I save a link to Delicious using the tag #social, trigger the action of posting that photo to my Facebook Page.”

Okay, those are actually two tasks I created:

I’m definitely not a fan of automating everything. If you’re going to participate and be part of the communities in your social channels, then by all means be present and interact. But to trigger a few ancillary postings from your social actions feels like acceptable flavor and color to me.

Here is the result from the first action above – a photo posted through Instagram appeared on my author fan page, particularly handy since you cannot yet post directly from Instagram to your company’s Facebook Page.

Some say that you should post directly and manually to Facebook for better rankings, but I’m one for mixing things up and not being so caught up in the numbers all the time.

You can create links and actions between a number of channels including the usual suspects like Twitter, Facebook profiles, Facebook Pages, and LinkedIn but also Dropbox, Evernote, YouTube, GTalk, email and even a phone call.

Update: Twitter just bought Summify…

Summify Joins the Flock at Twitter (Summify blog)

Twitter to Acquire News Aggregator Summify (SearchEngineWatch.com)

Social Summary Site Creator Summify Acquired by Twitter (Marketingland.com)

There are many ways to filter a stream, and we’re all desperately seeking the “Perfect Filter” to bring us only what we really want or need from the firehose of socially-shared information. I’m starting to use – and like – Summify.

As you connect your social and news accounts (Twitter, Facebook, Google Reader) to Summify, their algorithms prioritize the text-linked news stories shared by your connections. Stories with more retweets, likes and more shares get higher priority as do your friends and fans who are being shared most often. Over time, the system learns your preferences, too.

Here’s a sample of what I see in my email daily from Summify – an easy to digest list of top news stories that doesn’t overwhelming me.

If I click over to my Summify account page on the web, this is what I see:

When I click over to a story of interest to me, there’s a Summify bar across the top that gives me some stats about the article like who of my friends shared it along with a Share button and Favorite button (the heart). I personally close this bar and tend not to share from it but that’s just a personal preference and habit I got into a long time ago when I started seeing those pervasive bars.

On the web, you can peruse your followers and who is following you as well as see who you’re influenced by and who you are influencing. I’m much more interested, however, in the Summary feature and how it presents a smart selection of news items for me to review.

In a world of overload, it is a relief to find a tool that eases some of the stress of “too much.”

Summify is also available for iOS devices.

Facebook seems to change so often, it’s a wonder anyone can keep up with the latest features and modifications that this mega social network unveils, usually with little warning or explanation. Here are 5 things about Facebook Pages that are practically hidden or you may not have noticed.

1. You can target your Page status updates by Location or Language.

How many times have you wanted to send a status update pertinent to a particularly region but were worried that fans who were not in that area would get annoyed by the message? Next time, when composing an update for a location (or for fans who speak a particular language), click the upside down triangle under the status field.

A dialog box will appear with the choice of choosing a Location or Language target.

For Location, you can enter a Country or drill down to State…

Or even City…

2. You can specify the Pages that show up under your own Page’s Likes.

If you didn’t already know this, you can display icons for Pages that you favorite on your Page. Just visit the Page you want to favorite, scroll down to see the text links on the left side of that Page (midway down the Page) and click “Add to My Page’s Favorites.” (If you are an admin for more than one Facebook Page, you’ll be able to choose the Page where you’re adding the favorite link.)

If you have favorited more than five Pages, the different Page icons will rotate but only five will be visible at one time. To lock in the ones that are visible without having to click “See All,” you’ll want to Feature them. To do this, go into the Admin section of your Page (Edit Page), and choose “Featured” from the left-hand menu.

Then click the “Edit Featured Likes” button…

And you’ll see a menu of all the Pages you’ve Favorited.

Click five of them to lock them in on your Page, or if you click more, only those will rotate onto the Page while the others won’t be seen unless someone clicks “See All.” Note that the Page icons you feature will still change order on the Page.

3. You can feature admins on your Page.

There was a time when we thought it was best to remain anonymous when we managed brand Pages on Facebook or worried about our identities being revealed. But over time, it became a best practice to be transparent and let people know who was behind a Facebook Page.

While you’re in the Featured section of the admin area of your Page, you’ll see an “Add Featured Page Owners” button.

When you click it, you’ll see a list of anyone with admin privileges for your Page. Check the box next to the admins to be Featured on the left side of the Page.

The Featured Page Owners will show up under the Page Likes.

4. You can use Facebook as a Page and see a news feed of the Pages you’ve favorited.

Toward the top right side of your Facebook Page is a list of text links. Click “Use Facebook as (Name of Your Page).”

When you do, you’ll see a dialog box that explains how you can interact on Facebook as your page (you can check a box to no longer see this message):

The notifications you receive as a Page are like the ones you receive on your personal Facebook profile, however, they are about other people’s interactions on your Facebook Page. You can then go to another Page, like it, and comment on it as your Page instead of as you personally. When you click Home to view the news feed, you’ll see updates from the Pages you’ve liked.

Click the upside down triangle on the upper right side of the Page, and you’ll get a drop down menu that includes your personal Facebook account plus other Pages you manage so you can toggle between them.

Be careful that you’re fully aware of which identity you’re using while you’re in Facebook.

5. You can promote your Facebook Page with an ad based on a status update from your Page.

When you’re creating an ad through Facebook, you can choose a Page Post Ad.

When you click on “Page Post Ad,” you’ll get the option to select from a drop down menu of recent status updates you’ve published or the “Most Recent Eligible Post.”

Once you choose a post, you’ll see the ad appear with whatever image you used in the post and 129 characters worth of the update content.

Also included in the ad will icons for likes and comments on that particular update. If someone clicks on them in the ad, they are taken to a page with the original “story” i.e. post. The “Share” link is also clickable and allows people to share the post directly from the ad.

As you can see, there are many features on your Facebook Page that can be handy if you know about them or know how to find them.

What are some of your favorite Facebook Page features?

It is the first week of the new year, and on my first day back to work, I’ve been encountering several issues with tech services I’ve been using regular and have come to rely on.

First, I tried to access some of my archived slide presentations on my SlideShare account and got this:

Then I went to log into my MailChimp account and was met with this message:

Should I be afraid?

As I move into the new year and my goal of sharing useful, sensible information about technology, I would be remiss if I didn’t remind myself – and you – that the tech we rely on doesn’t always work. Sure, that probably isn’t news to most of you who have experienced Fail Whales and other signs of tech outages and mishaps.

However, the even more important message here is that technology could fail drastically or permanently. What if Google lost all of your email stored in Gmail? What if all of your documents are destroyed in a computer meltdown? Where does a tech glitch go from hassle to irretrievable loss, from emotional to devastating?

In our world of (over)reliance on digital information and technology, what are we doing to protect our data – and ourselves – from irreparable harm? With information becoming so valuable to every aspect of our work and lives, shouldn’t we take stock in how we manage it?

I’ve been very guilty of not backing up my computer…again. I was using an Apple Time Capsule but it stopped working, oh, about 358 days ago. I mailed it to Apple for a known defect repair, and it took over a month to get it back because of my crazy rural Alaska address issues. I even brought it to the Mac shop (4 hours drive from here), and they said it was fixed, but when I got back home, it still wouldn’t work.

So I’m thinking of checking out Carbonite. If you’re using it, I’d love to hear your thoughts or recommendations of other options. I think the key is to having both offline and in the cloud backups for all critical data. I pledge to work on my data backup plan for 2012 and share it with you next month.

Update: Both services came up a few hours later. Panic subsided.

Do you have a data protection and backup plan for your critical files? If not, what are you going to do about it?

For my New Year’s Resolution, I am banning the use of the term “social media” out of my vocabulary.

Having watched the proliferation of this inaccurate and oft-misunderstood term into our businesses and lives, I’ve come to realize that somebody has got to do it. Why?

Because we are all misusing and abusing the term and most people completely misunderstand what “social media” is supposed to mean and are acting on what they think it means then end up down a rabbit hole of relentless online activity that bears little fruit for the efforts. We are all going crazy doing things we think are “social,” and what we really are doing is alienating others in new, more powerful ways, including our customers and many of the people around us.

I blogged about the problem with the term “social media” back in March 2010 for GigaOm. I was struggling first to find the “right” definition of the term and went to Wikipedia to see what people had posted there. Here’s what it said back then:

Social media is media designed to be disseminated through social interaction, created using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques. Social media uses Internet and web-based technologies to transform broadcast media monologues (one to many) into social media dialogues (many to many). It supports the democratization of knowledge and information, transforming people from content consumers into content producers.

Here’s what it says today:

Social media includes web-based and mobile technologies used to turn communication into interactive dialogue. Andreas Kaplan and Michael Haenlein define social media as “a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content.”[1] Social media is media for social interaction as a superset beyond social communication. Enabled by ubiquitously accessible and scalable communication techniques, social media has substantially changed the way organizations, communities, and individuals communicate.[2]

Am I the only one who sees the above as a bunch of mumbo jumbo?

The way we are defining “social media” and then acting on “using social media” or “leveraging social media” is creating mumbo jumbo in our lives. It is taking the natural human instinct to communicate and build community and turning it into a circus of untenable communications.

We as publishers cannot keep up. We as consumers cannot keep up.

So what do we do when we can’t keep up?

Right now, we are desperately seeking new tools to try to manage something that shouldn’t have happened in the first place. We should never have defined the various tools on the Web that sprung out of early Web pages and called them “social” and made them into shiny, desirable objects that we all had to have in order to…to what? Be noticed? Be better at something? Be more popular? Be famous? Sell more?

What are really trying to do with “social media” anyway? And why is “social media” becoming the main focus – no, the driving force – of how we communicate with others online? It’s ludicrous.

“Social media” has NOTHING to do with humans communicating with each other. And half the tools we are assigning as being part of “social media” are inherently the antithesis of social, practically ANTI-social.

I’m going to explore this concept over the next few months, and will offer alternative terms and definitions. Good, bad or ugly, the term “social media” is probably here to stay, but I want to offer new language that more accurately describes what we are using and what we are doing – and trying to do – online.

With better language around online tools and activities, I think we can find better ways to leverage – and benefit – from them that are more in tune with our needs and our nature.

What does the term “social media” mean to you?

There have been some changes on WordPress.com, the free blog publishing and hosting site, most notably the messages you receive as you publish a new blog post. They are messages cheering you on for blogging, giving you the word count of your blog post and the what number post you just published.

The other day, I started getting “badges” recognizing my blogging accomplishments of reaching a blogging goal that I didn’t even set for myself.

I find it curious and amusing that a blog publishing company is applying game theory i.e. gamifying the blogging process. To what end? Are they thinking this is going to be motivation for people to blog more? Because they get a “prize” for reaching blogging goals? It doesn’t bother me that it’s there, mind you. I just find it curious.

I’m all for gamification of certain processes, even in business and work which I’ve blogged about before, but can’t imagine it is really going to effective to get people to blog more or blog regularly. And if we start blogging for badges, what will happen to the quality of our blogging? I wonder…

What do you think? Would getting encouraging messages and badges help you blog more?

I’ve been experimenting with Google+ Business Pages and recently blogged about how to set up a Google+ Page quickly and easily. But should you create a Google+ page for your business?

Here are some of my thoughts on the topic:

Why you may not want a Google+ Page

1. It is one more place to post.

2. It is unfamiliar and there are fewer case studies at the moment to validate it.

Why you SHOULD get a Google+ Page

1. It’s already big and getting bigger. It has made significant impacts on social media communications with surprisingly rapid adoption. If the people you are trying to reach are using it, it’s logical for you to at least explore it and see if you can provide value by being there.

2. It’s different enough from Twitter and Facebook to potentially be useful to you. You probably already have a preference between Twitter and Facebook or having more success on one over the other. G+ fits somewhere in between both and it is worth checking out the features and functions to see if it might work even better for you. I wouldn’t advise giving up something that is working, but adding G+ could round out how you reach out to customers and potential customers.

3. You can save your place there and learn as you go. Even if you are not sure how to use yet, having a placeholder presence, especially at this early stage, is important, even if you initially only used it as a gateway to your other social channels. Because it is new to everyone, the G+ community is more forgiving and also very helpful. But be careful not to create a virtually empty like Kaboom. At least fill out your About page and post several times with relevant content that gives first-time visitors a sense of who you are and what you do. If you know you aren’t updating yet, conclude with a post that explains your strategy. Encourage people who stop by your Page to circle you so they will know when you do start posting.

4. You could be one of the first in your industry or area to be there giving you some of the benefits of “first mover advantage.” Granted, that advantage may not be sustainable as adoption increases exponentially, but if you’re the first, you’ll always be able to say you were the first.

5. You can gain attention right now for being there, before it gets too noisy, and potentially build a strong following that you can learn over time how to leverage appropriately.

6. Updating it would be negligible to start – just a few minutes a day to start to get your feet wet. Soon G+ will be integrated into more social management tools so it will be as easy to update as Twitter but with the multimedia capabilities of Facebook. It is already available in Hootsuite for Enterprises, for example. (See their announcement).

Here are some Google+ Pages for companies and organizations that are braving the waters.

I was dismayed to read the Tech Crunch post “Facebook and the Age of Curation Through Unsharing” by Josh Constine....

I was dismayed to read the Tech Crunch post “Facebook and the Age of Curation Through Unsharing” by Josh Constine. I found it to be an arrogant and even frightening look at how online information sharing could be going with a call to action to “learn to filter out the noise in reverse, opting out when we don’t want to share instead of opting in when we do.”

Of course, this was just my gut reaction, but here a few things that bothered me about the piece. I’ve italicized excerpts.

Facebook’s Open Graph is ushering in a monumental shift in how we curate what we share.

This lede right away tells me that Facebook, once again, may be trying to push through a major change in how our information is being handled, and to some extent, we are at the mercy of the company leader’s careless whims. Already, I’m on the defensive.

Curation used to mean opting in to sharing…I believe we are entering the age of curation through unsharing, and it will force us to change.

Curation still means opting to share. If we are forced to change our online behaviors to opt out of sharing - if sharing is automatic with every action we take online – that is not called curation. That is called Invasion of Privacy.

Some believe “frictionless sharing” via Open Graphs will be the death of curation.

“Frictionless sharing,” aka Invasion of Privacy, won’t be the death of curation. It will be the death of our expectation of privacy. Or at the very least, a threat to it.

The article goes on to talk about the higher noise that will occur as everything we do online gets reported automatically to our friends. Anyone remember Facebook’s Beacon?

And then the author places the burden on you – on each of us – to learn how to “unshare” with some onus on developers to “get them to cooperate” by including ‘unshare’ options on apps and sites where the set up is or may soon be to automatically share all of your actions.

I think the thing that infuriates me the most about the ideas put forth in this article is that it takes complete advantage of many people’s lack of understanding of what is happening with their information and actions when they interact with sites and apps. Yes, we should all be more educated about what happens when we do something online. But most people aren’t – and don’t think like – techies, developers or marketers. Most people treat their computers and smartphones as appliances. That may be wrong, but it is often the reality.

Consider this: In the pre-Internet days, we used to pick up the telephone to make a call, and we had every expectation of privacy. But even today, when we make a call on our smartphone, there is an implicit expectation of privacy there, right? When we turn on our television, we have always understood this is a private act, that what we watched on our TVs at home would not be known by others unless we chose to share that information.

So imagine now if we made a phone call and the fact that we were on the phone or the name of who we called was made public on our social news stream. Or that when we turned on TV, what we watched was instantly shared. We’d be outraged, right?

Clearly, as consumers, many of us have a false expectation of privacy when we connect to someone else’s website or use someone else’s app because we’re using a computer or smartphone – an appliance – without fully thinking through the ramifications of our everyday use of these devices. But where are the lines being drawn between our expectation of privacy surrounding what we do on these sites and a company’s desire to broadcast our actions to drive traffic, increase branding impressions, push sales?

We should NOT have to opt out of sharing when we take normal actions of accessing information, purchasing products, interacting online in what should be non-public engagements.

Jeremy Epstein at Never Stop Marketing commented about this concept of having to opt out of sharing in his post Sharing an Interest in Sex? On Default Opt Out. He elaborates on Seth Godin’s early treatise on the concept of Permission Marketing and also explores what this kind of “opt out sharing” means from a marketing standpoint i.e. should marketers and content publishers be doing this? Jeremy doesn’t take a strong stand against it but does say he feels it is running up to – and possibly over – the line of Permission Marketing.

I say NO, don’t do it. If you are a marketer or content publisher and you are doing this, you are crossing the line. Remember the class action lawsuit against Facebook for Beacon? Enough said.

And I think every one of us should say NO to this type of information sharing process to keep it from becoming a trend or a communications shift. Sharing what we are doing online should be our choice, not something that others force on us as a default setting.

This isn’t natural. Often the best product design is translating existing behavior patterns to new mediums. But the proliferation of content, in both volume and access, requires a brand new conception of sharing and curation. Together we can bring about a golden age.

Golden age? The Invasion Age is more like it.

We all need to be more aware of these insidious ideas and movements toward unleashing our actions online into the social streams and forcing us to have to pay even closer attention to privacy settings that are hidden and change often. We should not accept the premise that we need to learn a new habit and get used to “opting out” of sharing because these sites and apps are going to share news about your actions whether you want them to or not. We need to boycott the sites and apps – like the Washington Post – that perptetuates this premise.

An action you can take: Have you noticed on Facebook those new “news” feeds at the top of the regular news feed that says what your friends are reading? Do NOT click on those, and do not allow the news apps access to your reading activity. And if you are using them, remove access and delete them from your Facebook permissions. There are many other ways to actively share what you are reading.

What do you think about the idea that sites and apps will automatically share everything you are reading, listening to, and doing, and it will be up to you to “unshare” or reconfigure and find tune your privacy settings to prevent this from happening by default?

ADDENDUM: Jeremy just brought this article by Marshall Kirkpatrick to my attention on the same topic: Why Facebook’s Seamless Sharing is Wrong
