Choosing to install the BARANI DESIGN MeteoHelix IoT Pro, MeteoWind IoT Pro and MeteoRain sensors for urban climate monitoring in Stockholm, Sweden on street lamps was by no means a coincidence.

Based on World Meteorological Organization (WMO) verified technologies in combination with IoT wireless data transmission, these sensors not only offer the highest levels of precision but also unparalleled ease of installation. Being solar powered and requiring no wires to connect, their installations on busy urban streets are quick and thus cost-effective.

Other sensors in use by SensCity include the MeteoAG which offers the expanded capability for agricultural monitoring of soil moisture, soil temperature, and leaf wetness.

More information on WMO conforming urban and agricultural weather station packages can be found at the following link:

https://www.baranidesign.com/weather-station-packages

The pyramidal shape of this massif is marked by a huge cirque and is characterised by its impressive 2,000 m vertical rise from the valley floor below.

For the first time in history, on September 24, 2020, exact amounts of rainfall started being recorded on its summit by a BARANI DESIGN Technologies MeteoHelix weather station together with a new MeteoRain 200 Compact rain gauge. The compactness of these WMO precision instruments and ease of their installation enabled local mountain guides to install this weather station in a location that was inaccessible to weather station equipment even just 2 years ago. Able to survive and transmit weather data even from under large snow cover for up to 4 months, the highly survivable MeteoHelix weather stations are ideally suited for environmental research in hard to access locations.

An additional fact worth noting is the ability of the MeteoRain 200 Compact to measure rain even in below freezing temperatures as show in the plot below. Detailed live meteorological data from Gerlachov Peak can be found through the following link:

https://weather.allmeteo.com/#/ws/2008SH020 (Registration and login is required.)

Internet-of-Things innovation will be seeping into the forefront of AMS 2020 in Boston, MA this winter with the introduction of MeteoHelix® IoT micro-weather stations capable of meeting strict measurement guidelines of the NWS and WMO for long-term global warming observations.

While Europe has already adapted the first wave of low cost IoT meteorological sensors and weather stations with mixed results, the lessons learned can benefit the adoption of these technologies to let USA take the lead. Lessons learned from the first wave of IoT meteorological sensors have shown that data quantity does not replace data quality. Artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced statistical methods made good on identifying anomalies and sensor failures but fall short in compensating for systematic and long-term sensor measurement errors due to inadequate measurement system stability and the influences of the local environment. For now, the golden rule of science, “garbage in = garbage out” still maintains its merit.

Comptus Inc. of stand 341 will showcase the MeteoHelix® IoT professional weather stations and sensors conforming to NWS and WMO standards from BARANI DESIGN Technologies at the 100th AMS Annual Meeting 13–16 January 2020 in the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, 415 Summer St., Boston, MA USA.

Other sensors on hand from BARANI DESIGN Technologies will include the precise and robust MeteoWind® 2 and MeteoWind® Compact combined heated anemometers with wind vanes with a preliminary MEASNET/IEC 61400-12-1:2017 edition 2 class A = 4.4 and class C = 4.7. Their benefits in the reduction of the heat-island effect are known, yet not well quantified. The limitations of current sensor and weather station technologies limit the quality of urban climate research due to error producing influences of sun-heated building walls and pavement. Large measurement errors in meteorological instrumentation due to inadequate 360-degree solar heat shielding with adequate ventilation severely limit urban meteorological data quality.
