Depending on the season when you choose to travel to Cabo, you’ll find the scene jam-packed with merriment and partiers (especially during the high season of the spring break), or at least populous enough to make for a pleasant stay.

With an inspired name for a Mexican club, El Squid Roe has managed to keep up its reputation as the place to be in Cabo, if you’re looking for a fun night. What to expect?

Three entire levels packed with music and dancing, patrons dancing on tables seemingly without so much as a care in the world, bleachers around the dance floors for the best view on the crowd and (best of all!) waiters that circulate the rooms with tequila spray tanks on their backs.

Prices are absolutely reasonable (to get a basic idea, the complete New Year’s Eve menu was priced around 60 Australian Dollars) and the atmosphere is red hot, all year round. Special events held here include sporting matches to be watched live on big screens, as well as themed parties.

Party Downtown at The Giggling Marlin

This bar-and-club opens at 7 pm every night, Monday through Sunday, which is probably why it has managed to maintain its status as the oldest still up-and-running party venue in Cabo. Don’t let the word ‘old’ worry you, the atmosphere is still lively enough for you to have plenty of fun here.

They operate according to the humorous, yet partly truthful motto of “If our Food, Drinks or Service aren’t up to your standards, please lower your standards.”

Located right in downtown Cabo San Lucas, on the Marina Boulevard, it would be hard for any tourist to miss it. While it may strike some Australian travelers as a tad too tourist-y, The Giggling Marlin surely has its appeal, especially due to its famous ‘hangings’.

Leticia Klein has done a little bit of everything. She's helped open hotels, owned a restaurant with her husband, managed her own store and balanced a family of 5 children.

Having traveled extensively thoughout Mexico, she talks about it with such a passion (especially Baja) that you'll be ready to pack your suitcase and see for yourself. In fact, she's so passioniate about Baja that the tourism board often has her give presentations to travel agents.

Her enthusiasim for travel is also evident in how she stocks her showroom. From handmade Mexican shoes to famous Columbian designers like Amelia Toro, Leticia gives visitors a grand selection of Mexican and Latin American designers.

Her goal? Send her clients home with something "different" and promote the designers in the process.

Leticia Klein spends most of her days in her store Casa Vieja, which means "old house," located at the Shoppes at Palmilla in San Jose del Cabo. But she still doesn't let a year go by without traveling.

Here's what she has to say about her store, exploring Baja and the changes she has seen over the years:

What brought you to Los Cabos?

I was in the hotel industry. My husband and I were with Presidente at the time. We came from opening a Presidente in Loreto to the Los Cabos project in the end of 1980. Back then, we followed the rules very strictly - no high rises were allowed and we tried to blend in with the local architechture.

The Presidente has changed hands a few times. How do you feel about that?

A while back, I called my daughter in New York. "Paulina," I said. "It's an all inclusive!"

It's a Holiday Inn now! I can't believe it.

What's the biggest change you've seen from when you first got to Los Cabos?

The beaches!

On Medano Beach, there used to only be a small palapa restaurant that served lobster and beer. Isn't that something?

Today, Medano Beach is full of hotels, restaurants and plenty of tourists.

How did you get from hotels to opening Casa Vieja?

Well, I used to do Sales and PR at the Presidente. Everyone kept asking me "Where can I buy a nice dress?" and "Where is a nice restaurant?"

My husband was in food and beverage. I said, "Honey, you have to open a restaurant for all these people!" We had Daminana, our restaurant in San Jose del Cabo, for 18 years.

I also wanted a nice place where people could shop. So I opened Casa Vieja.

What was the original "Casa Vieja" like?

I opened it in 1983. We found this really old house; it was something like 210 years old. It had these high ceilings with beams. Casa Vieja means "old house."

I started out with a Mexican designer - Josefa. She was being sold in Saks and Nieman Marcus at the time for like 2,000 dollars. I also got another designer - Irene Pulas - who put out a line. Those were wonderful things.

You've traveled extensively throughout the Baja California Sur; where are some of your favorite spots?

As you head north, everything changes so dramatically.

Loreto is one of my favorites. Especially because of the way it's been kept; it hasn't really taken off tourism wise. I hope it stays that way although there now have flights to Loreto from Los Cabos. Loreto has great fishing.

Santa Rosalina. There's a lot of mining - copper and cobalt. It's thriving!

When you head along the Pacific, I love Guerrero Negro. The salt mine is amazing and the Jack Rabbit Lagoon (also known as Scammon's) is THE place for whale watching.

And of course, I love La Paz. So close by, such a different atmosphere. When my husband was Secretary of Tourism for Baja California Sur, we moved to La Paz. Those were some of the neatest two years of my life.

When you moved to La Paz, what happened to Casa Vieja?

I was coming and going to La Paz and it was hard. You have to always be in the store so I thought it was best to close down if I couldn't be there. I always thought I would re-open it. I missed it, but it was a demanding store and I had to be there to keep it up.

Destiny is something special. I told everyone to keep an eye open for a local spot. I ran into a buddy of mine who was walking with John Pentz. Pentz was planning to build a shopping center. As it turns out, it was just what I was looking for. Pentz said the shopping center was going to be "top of the line." I told Pentz to ask the locals about Casa Vieja. He called back and said "Let's have dinner!"

We have been here at the Shoppes at Palmilla for 6 years.

What kinds of things do you sell at Casa Vieja?

Mostly Mexican or Latin American designers. Columbian designs are very strong right now. They import lots of materials from Italy and there's a lot of young designer that are very hip.

Most of our cliental comes from the US and Canada so I want to share something different with them.

Can you show us some of your favorite things in your store?

These shirts are made from fibers from cacti. It's a lady and her daughter in the state of Michochan who design them. They walk through the cacti fields wearing these clothes that make the fibers attach to them. They make the yarn on a foot loom from the fibers. And then they dye it and knit it.

I have two tops I've worn and I always get comments on them. A lot of people ask if it's scratchy. It's not!

These are handmade shoes from San Miguel de Allende. They are very comfortable and only $60.

I love Pineda Colvin. We have a corner here at Casa Vieja and I also own a Pineda Colvin shop in downtown San Jose del Cabo. They use the Mexican culture to inspire their designs. They are especially known for the Monarch butterflies pattern. We have lots of handbags, scarfs, ponchos, ties and more.

Where do you find most of these items?

Along my travels. I'm always asking around and I have friends that have shops. And being in the hotel business, I made many connections and we pass along many tips.

Out of the restaurants, hotels and stores, what was your favorite adventure?

Favorite? I loved being in hotels, and I loved being in the shops. I enjoyed the hotels fully, but i couldn't grow any more. I was ready to start something else.

What's in store for you next?

Consolidating my stores. I have to be on top of it with the economy. And I would like to enjoy my grandchildren. I have 12 grandchildren!

You've been very successful. What tips do you have for success?

Don't be afraid of change. The older you get, the more resistant you are. Accept change and enjoy.
Work doing something that you like to do. Life is short.
Your family and friends are important. You need to work on your relationships.

It's no surprise that December is one of the busiest months for Cabo. The combination of school holidays and colder weather makes a December vacation to Cabo San Lucas a must.

December Temperature

If you are looking to get away from the start of the snowy season, Cabo San Lucas is a great vacation spot. Cabo's desert climate guarantees that your vacation will be sunny and December temperatures are in the mid 70s to 80s so you can be sure come home with a great tan to show off to your friends.

Lows are in the mid 60s so be sure to bring a sweater on that sunset cruise. Also keep in mind that the Pacific side will be cooler than the east side

December Water Temperature

The water starts to get a little bit cooler in December, dropping to the mid 70s. Many people still go snorkeling and diving in December. Most hotels have heated pools and it is recommended that you call ahead and ask if your hotel's pool is heated during December.

Things to do in Cabo in December

Desert Hiking and Mountain Biking

Hiking or biking in the desert is best in the winter when the temperature is closer to the 70s. Many tour companies offer guided hiking or biking excursions through the Los Cabos terrain. You can choose mountain, desert or even town tours. Head up to Santiago and the Sierra de La Laguna Biosphere for a scenic oasis.

Be sure to never hike alone and to bring plenty of water.

Surf Todos Santos

While the best time to surf Los Cabos is in the summer, Todos Santos surfing is prime during the winter. With well known spots like La Pastora, Playa Pescadero and Cerritos, it's worth a trip up the Pacific coast to try your board on these waves. These beaches draw surfers from all over the world.

Even if you are not into surfing, it's worth a drive to see the surfers and then wander through the charming town of Todos Santos. All surfing beaches are within a 30 minute drive of the town

Canopy Tours and Zip Lining

There's nothing better than gliding over the Los Cabos desert. Canopy and zipline tours are very popular in Los Cabos. You will have to walk between the lines and it can get hot, so it's best to go in the winter when the temperature drops into the 70s. Most tours are good for adults and older kids (8+) and last around 5 hours including transportation to the course. Make sure to bring sunblock!

Dressed to the K9s Fundraiser

Every holiday season the Cabo Humane Society puts on its annual gala complete with cocktails, appetizers and live music. Tickets sales help fund the Humane Society which helps provide animal and disease control, animal rescue, adoption, and education programs. Each year has a theme and an auction benefiting the Humane Society.

Feast of the Our Lady of Guadalupe

According to legend, Mary appeared to Juan Diego, a peasant, outside of Mexico City in the 1500s. This event is celebrated through out Mexico as a religious Holiday. Many people make a pilgrimage to the Bascillica de Guadalupe in Mexico City, but there are celebrations all over Mexico.

In Los Cabos, there is usually a parade and a religious mass at the Catholic churches. There are also night time celebrations.

Los Posadas

Los Posadas is celebrated the nine days before Christmas and represents Mary and Joseph trying to find a place to stay in Bethleham. Members of a neighborhood are the "los peregrines" looking for a place to stay and carry statues of Mary and Joseph. They are refused lodging at many houses and then finally accepted.

Traditionally, each family in a neighborhood picks a night to hold a Posada at their house. At the designated house for the evening, there is a nativity scene and a celebration complete with pinatas.

While most of the festivities take place in the neighborhoods, many businesses may have "Los Posadas" themed events.

Navidad / Christmas

Feliz Navidad! Christmas is celebrated throughout Los Cabos. In the days before Christmas, many restaurants, hotels, and stores will have holiday themed events. Christmas is a national holoiday so banks and other businesses might be closed.

New Years Eve

NYE is the biggest party of the year in Los Cabos. Many people make an annual tradition of bringing in the new year in Los Cabos. Almost all of the clubs and bars have events. Make sure to get your tickets in advance and book your hotel!

Interior Design in Los Cabos: Interview with Paulina Gutierrez

I've spent a lot of time in the hotels, restaurants and villas of Los Cabos and one of things I constantly notice is the incredible detail that goes into the interior design.

One of the places that this is perhaps the most visable is in the luxury villas and condos. Communities like Pedregal, Palmilla and Esperanza are full of homes and second homes that are impecable in their design.

Recently, I got the chance to sit down with Paulina Gutierrez of Casa Paulina and chat about the interior design business in Cabo. She's an interior decorator who has had a design business in Los Cabos for over 25 years.

Paulina does a lot of custom work and has two retail stores: one in downtown San Jose del Cabo and one in the Shoppes at Palmilla.

Her stores are full of hand-picked selections that piqued my curiousity and of course, her beautiful antique door collection. I was also interested in the decorating style of Los Cabos (I love luxury villas) and what led Paulina to the bottom of the Baja Pennisula.

How would you describe the decorating style of Los Cabos?

Most clients want the Spanish influence - heavy carbons and heavy fabrics. However, we are starting to see more wanting a contempory feel with lots of open areas. Little by little I see a transition.

You decorate for a lot of other people. But what is your personal style?

My personal style is contemporary organic. I just finished decorating my house. It's very square with no arches. The windows are all aluminum frames - no wood.

The kitchen is white with stainless steel. I added organic pieces of furniture. I have an organic shaped one of a kind dining table.

It's all very clean and simple. All my pergala (verandas) are local palapa material.

The inside of the house is more contemporary . Very natural colors like off white and sands.

How did you get started in interior design?

I started when I was a teenager. My mom had an interior design company in Mexico City and I helped her around the house. My mom was very organized and focused. And she taught me to be the same.

What brought you to Los Cabos?

I came to Los Cabos in 1989 with some friends who moved here.

What was Cabo like back then?

It was a small quiet, clean beautiful town. Life was very slow. Everyone had a lot of time for themselves. It was the most beautiful place. It wasn't developed very much. Most of the hotels used to close during the summer. I went to the beach every single day.

What decorating and design services do you offer?

I do everything from decorationg model houses and units - "mini houses" - for major developments to smaller projects like re-upholstery. Everything is customizable; our main business is custom. We do a lot of custom art.

And my retail stores of course. We have two locations. Our main location is downtown and this new location in the Shoppes at Palmilla. The retail stores are great because people can just walk in and buy a gift or accessories. We always have great lamps, Christmas gifts or even house warming gifts. We can pack it nicely for travel or ship it to you.

A lot of your clients are second home owners. Do you work with clients long distance?

Yes. Actually, I worked for my first client long distance. He had bought a place in Los Cabos and couldn't come down. He contacted me and I started to work with him to find out what needed - furnishing and interior design. When he arrived, everything was ready.

Back then there were no emails and we had to do everything over the phone. It's a lot easier now to do long distance consultations.

Technology has changed my life completely. I used to be a slave to my phone or my store, but with technology I can make a deal and the client doesn't need to know where I am. I can be traveling, buying art and shoot a picture with my Blackberry. I can then email my client and they can look at the picture and say yes or no in 3 seconds. This has allowed me give better service because I can always be there.

I've also helped clients do their houses in the States or other places. They send me pictures and we do rendering and send the art.

Where do you get most of your items for decorating?

My husband says I really never stop. Even when I was on honeymoon, I was shopping. I find things every day every place. I do some purchasing trips and exhibitions. But it never really stops.

You've traveled extensively throughout Mexico. Where would you recommend someone visit to find some treasures?

To find hidden treasures, you need to go to the towns. You need to walk the towns and talk with the artisans. One of my favorite places is Chiapas. My mom is from Chiapas so I'm very familiar with it. Every time I'm there, I discover something new.

Can you tell us about your antique door collection?

Actually, my first door was Mexican. It was a piece that we found and it's now the main gate for Casa Paulina in San Jose del Cabo.

We liked the idea so much that then we did a big import from India. We imported like 200 doors! Now we have doors from all over and a lot from Mexico.

An antique door can change the whole atmosphere. We have done a lot of houses where we switch the doors. We also do custom carved or metal doors.

The antique doors also make interesting coffee tables or headboards..

Do you have any decorating tips for our readers?

Many Cabo regulars will tell you that November is their favorite time to visit Los Cabos. The days are still hot, the water is still temperate and the nights are warm; perfect for an early winter escape!

The beaches are not too crowded yet and the marlin are still biting and the tuna are plentiful for those who like to fish. Early November sees Dia de Los Muertos celebrations and the end of November is the celebration of the begining of the Mexican Revolution.

Temperature

The weather in Cabo during the month of November is pretty mild. Hurricane season is over so the chance of rain is pretty slim.

The temperature in November is usually high 70s and low 80s with nights dipping into the 60s.

The water temperature is usually in the mid 70s in November.

Things to do in Cabo in November

Visit the Organic Market

The San Jose Jose Organic Market opens the first week in November and is held every Saturday from 9am to 3pm. Products range from organic, locally grown fruits and vegetables to hand made crafts. The market, which is just east of downtown, can be a little hard to find so make sure to bring a map or have a good guide.

Take the San Jose del Cabo Art Walk

Every Thursday night from November to May, vistors and residents can take a walk through some of the best art galleries in Los Cabos. Not only do you get to see some amazing art, but many of the galleries have events and you can meet the artists. The art walk is from 5pm to 9pm and some of the galleries offer wine and appetizers. You can take a pre-planned tour with a guide or you can find your own way with a map of the galleries participating in the art walk.

Swim in the Waterfall at Sol de Mayo

There is a 30 ft waterfall right outside of Santiago in Fox Canyon which fills up with water after the rainy season. You can take a drive to Santiago and then spend the day hiking and swimming in the canyon. The actual waterfall is just down the road from the Ecological Rancho Sol de Mayo, where you can grab something to eat or drink at the restaurant. The best time to go is in November after the rain in September and October fills up the waterfall - making it perfect for swimming. There are also some nearby hot springs.

Day of the Dead

The Day of the Dead or Dia de Los Muertos is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. These days celebrate those family members and friends who have passed away. While many of the festivities take place at the homes, you can see some altars in the town as well as decorations in the cemeteries.

Revolution Day

November 20th marks the begining of the Mexican Revolution. It is a federal holiday in Mexico so many banks and other businesses will be closed. (If the day falls on a weekend, it is usually celebrated the following Monday at local businesses). There will be music, fireworks and even a parade that runs through San Jose del Cabo.

Halloween In Cabo San Lucas: What You Should Know

Here in the States, Halloween seems to take over the month of October. The stores fill up with bulk candy, haunted houses start popping up and people start planning their costumes.

I've seen Halloween costumes hanging in store windows since Labor Day. My friends are posting pictures of their pumpkin carvings and I'm trying to resist the urge to purchase Halloween decorations (really, do I need those?).

But if you are going to Cabo San Lucas over Halloween, your October 31st planning might include a few questions:

Do people in Cabo even celebrate Halloween? Is it the same thing as Day of the Dead. If I'm bringing my kids, can they trick or treat? Are there any parties for Halloween?

So here's the guide to Halloween in Cabo San Lucas - what you should know, where to go, etc.

Halloween is Celebrated in Cabo

Even though Halloween is traditionally not a Mexican holiday, its influence has crossed the border - especially into the tourist spots like Cabo. You will find Halloween parties at the bars, hotel lobbies decorated and plenty of costumes on Halloween night (and throughout the weekend). Kids even go "trick or treating."

Halloween and Day of the Dead are NOT the Same Thing

While they both usually involve decorating and lots of skulls, Halloween and Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) are totally different holidays. Halloween is much more about partying, dressing up and having fun. It is also more celebrated by tourists than the locals.

Day of the Dead, while it does involve some celebrating, is a religious holiday which remembers the loved ones who have passed away. Halloween is October 31st and Day of the Dead is November 1st and 2nd.

People Wear Halloween Costumes in Cabo

Yup, pack that cat suit, pirate outfit or cowboy get up. You are going to need it! Most of the party-goers on the day of Halloween are all dressed up.

Usually the weekend of Halloween is filled with events, so you might want to bring more than one! There are also a lot of Halloween costume contests throughout Cabo. You can come up with some Cabo themed Halloween costumes or use your own creativity.

There are LOTS of Halloween Parties in Cabo

Halloween parties are usually scheduled over the weekend of Halloween. They usually involve fun drink specials and costume contests so dress to impress!

Most of the big clubs and bars like Pink Kitty, Baja Junkie and Squid Roe will have something planned for the holiday. Some of the cruises also have special Halloween cruises.

Or you can just head to downtown Cabo on Halloween night and bar hop. There will be lots of others dressed in costume.

There are Halloween Events for Kids

Every year the Puerto Paraiso Mall has a costume contest for kids. Also a lot of resorts have Halloween events for kids, so call your hotel or resort ahead of time to ask what they have for children.

Although the honest truth is that there are more tourist Halloween events for adults than kids in Cabo.

Bring Some Candy or Small Toys With You

A lot of the local kids in Cabo come into downtown on Halloween and some of the visitors pass out candy to them. It is a lot of fun to pass out the candy or small toys to them when they ask "Queremos Halloween."

If you forgot to bring some, you can pick up bags of candy at Costco or Walmart.

Shopping for Souvenirs in Cabo - A Photo Essay

On my last trip to Cabo, I was determined to bring my boyfriend back a small souvenir. He's quite upset that I haven't been packing him in my suitcase and bringing him with me. Into Cabos' souvenir shops I headed.

Before I knew it, I had dragged my poor co-worker to every variation of a souvenir store in Cabo - markets, tourist spots, duty-free shops, you name it. Of course I had my camera handy! From t-shirts to bottles of tequila, there were plenty of colorful gifts in the stores.

My boyfriend ended up with a t-shirt with a marlin on it, but I got lots of fun photos.

You'll find a lot of chocolates filled with liqueurs like Kahlua or Baileys while browsing the stores in Cabo. Make sure you are purchasing them in an air-conditioned store - they melt!

Small trinkets like boxes are found throughout Los Cabos. You can also find shot glasses ($2 -$4 USD), wine and drinking glasses ($5 -$10) and other small gifts.

Bags of coffee are usually available for purchase in Cabo souvenir stores. You can even get bags that say "Cabo San Lucas" on them. Coffee in the stores or markets is usually around $6 or $7 a bag.

If you forgot a beach bag or just need extra space to bring home your other souvenirs, you can find a wide selection of "Cabo San Lucas" tote bags. Bags usually cost $10 - $15 USD. If you are in the market, you might be able to negotiate a lower price.

Picture frames and even photo albums are for sale. You can get one or two to store your Los Cabos memories.

Maracas and t-shirts are also popular in Los Cabos. Maracas range from about $1 - $3 USD, while t-shirts range from about $5 - $20. You can also find sweatshirts and other clothing in the stores.

Hot sauce is a staple in souvenir stores in Los Cabos. From packages of many bottles to just creative "Cabo San Lucas" packages, you'll find a good selection of hot sauce in Cabo.

Damiana is supposedly an aphrodisiac. You can find bottles of this liqueur in the stores for about $4.

While real turtle oil is illegal (it involves unethical treatment of the turtles), imitation turtle oil can be found in lots of the tourist stores. Supposedly, turtle oil helps moisten your skin, protect from windburn and most importantly, improve your tan.

Ah, Tequila! From large bottles of Cabo Wabo tequila to small souvenir bottles wearing sombreros, you can find a good gift regardless of your budget. There are also packages of small tequila bottles with shot glasses, tequila in a bottle shaped like Land's End and tequilas in beautiful bottles like Clase Azul. Bring a little of the party home!

Los Cabos Spa Resorts

A lof of times when I stay at a hotel, it seems that the spa is an after thought - almost as if someone realized at the last minute that their hotel wasn't complete without the spa. And then there's a place to perhaps have your hair blown out, your nails painted and one or two massage rooms.

The resorts in Los Cabos have taken a different approach. Which is perhaps why most of them have "Resort & Spa" at the end of their name instead of just hotel or resort. They are proud of their spas. And they should be; most of them have won world accolades. Cabo's spa resorts are consistently ranked amoung the top spas in Latin America.

It almost seems that Los Cabos spa resorts have managed to craft their hotels around their spas, creating an ambiance of relaxation and beauty mirrored by the stunning Cabo scenery.

Hotel spas at spots like the Esperanza, the Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Resort & Spa, Las Ventanas, and the Westin Resort & Spa Los Cabos give Cabo its reputation. It's not only their attention the ambiance (wandering the spa at Esperanza can make you feel as though you are lost in the secret garden), but their services as well.

You can try the Temazcal at the Pueblo Bonito Pacifica, a pre-Hispanic therapeutic steam bath of pre-Hispanic origin complete with ritual. Or a Desert Clay Purification, intended to draw impurities out of the body, at Esperanza.

There's a difference between traveling and vacationing and when you stay at a Los Cabos spa resort, you can enter a place where you can regenerate for your real life. (If you ever decide to go back!).

Inglesia de San Lucas - Cabo San Lucas Catholic Church

While the Misión de San José del Cabo Anuiti is the predominately visited Catholic Church in Los Cabos, Inglesia Catholica de San Lucas is also worth a visit.

Inglesia Catholica de San Lucas is the Catholic Church in the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. This is the most widely attended church in the area.

Also known as the Santuario de Guadalupe, this simple structure was built in 1730. Very little has changed since the first construction

Visit during December 12th and you can see the celebrations for the the Feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe.

Mass is offered on Saturday evenings (7pm) and three times on Sundays (10:30 am, 12:00 noon, and 8:00 pm). You can attend bi-linigual (English and Spanish) services on Saturday and at noon on Sunday.

If you are looking for a Catholic wedding in Cabo San Lucas, this small church makes for a beautiful ceremony.

Bahia Santa Maria

Bahia Santa Maria is a small horseshoe shaped bay along km 12 of the Los Cabos Corridor. This bay is popular with the snorkeling crowd as its shape creates an underwater preserve. Many color fish can be seen with just basic snorkeling gear.

Because of this Bahia Santa Maria is common stop for daytime snorkeling and booze cruises and throughout the day you will see boats anchored to let their guests explore the waters.

You can also access Bahia Santa Maria from the beach. Playa Santa Maria has little to no amenities, but on the weekends you will find a vendor or two offering sodas, snorkeling gear or some souvenirs. Also, the beach is barren from shade and the hot Cabo sun tends to be extra strong. If you plan on hanging out on the beach, it's a good idea to bring a sun umbrella.

On a calm sunny day, Bahia Santa Maria is a great spot to bring the whole family.

Cabo San Lucas in October : Weather, Events and More

October in Cabo marks the very beginning of the tourist season and one of my favorite times to visit Baja California Sur.

You can feel the excitement in the air as restaurants and other businesses that may have taken August and September off for their own vacations start to open their doors again. The grey whales begin their journey to warmer waters from Alaska - they will reach Cabo in late November, early December.

The air is still warm, the water still bearable and there are still many "off-season" discounts to be found.

Cabo San Lucas Weather in October

Mid-October marks the end of the rainy season in Cabo as the Pacific Hurricane season comes to a close. However, it only rains about 6-8 days the whole year in Cabo. So most of October in Cabo will be sunny and beautiful like Cabo weather is year round.

The average temperature in Cabo during October is around 85 to 90 degrees with nights in the high end of the 70s. The water temperature in October is a bit cooler, averaging around 75 degrees.

Things to do in Cabo During October

Fishing

Fishing is all the range in Cabo during October as it's tournament season. While fishing in Cabo is good year round, October marks the end of season when the marlin are most prevalent in the Cabo waters. Black and Black Marlin are commonly caught as well as large Tuna, Doroado (Mahi - Mahi) and Sailfish.

Sea Turtle Releases

Sea turtles lay their eggs on the Cabo beaches in July and August and the baby sea turtles usually hatch between September - November. This means that if you are looking to be part of a Sea Turtle Release, October is the perfect time.

Many tour companies in Cabo, hotels and other companies host sea turtle releases where visitors and locals can help release the baby sea turtles to the wild.

Scuba Diving

October is a great time to go scuba diving in Cabo as the water is still relatively warm (75- 80) and the visibility is great (40-90 ft).

Experienced divers can take a trip to Cabo Pulmo, the only coral reef system on the western side of North America or swim with the whale sharks at Gordo Banks. Whale sharks gather in the Gordo Banks area from June to November.

There are also many programs and sites for beginner divers in Cabo.

Golf

Los Cabos has some excellent championship golf courses designed by famous names such as Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman. However, the fees to play some of these courses can be pretty steep. October is a good time to play golf as the fees usually don't increase to their highest until November or December. There are low season and high season rates at almost all of the golf courses in Cabo.

Also, the heat in October will not be as bad as in July, August or September. The little rain that Cabo gets is usually around September, early October so the courses will be fresh and green.

Cabo San Lucas Events in October

The Bisbee's Black and Blue Marlin Tournament

Held in mid October, the Bisbee's Black and Blue (sometimes just referred to as the Bisbee's) is the mecca of all deep sea fishing tournaments. With the winners' purse usually in the millions, this Cabo fishing tournament brings some of the best in the business into town.

Even if you are not participating in the tournament, the Bisbee's is popular to watch due to the giant marlin that the fishermen bring in. Ever seen an 800 lb fish? Here's your chance.

There are also booths and events in the marina.

Sammy Hagar's Birthday Bash

Every October, Sammy Hagar (of Van Halen and founder of Cabo Wabo) holds a multi- day "Birthday Party" complete with live music and lots of fun. As Sammy was born on October 13th, the Birthday Bash is usually around the second week of October. Tickets go on sale in late July and the concerts sell out pretty fast.

This costume ball has become a Cabo tradition. At the Pimp and 'Ho Ball, it's all about your costume

Halloween

While Halloween is traditionally a U.S holiday, Cabo San Lucas has adopted many of the festivities. Some of the local children even go trick or treating!

Hotels, bars, restaurants and other businesses will have Halloween decorations and parties. And plenty of people will be in costume on and around the holiday.

Day of the Dead

While Day of the Dead (Dia de Los Muertos) actually takes place on November 1st and 2nd, many hotels, restaurants and local businesses start preparing for it in late October. Throughout Los Cabos, you'll see the traditional decorations such as skulls and marigolds. Many of the candles will be lit at the altars on October 31st as the souls of the dead are said to arrive at midnight. If you stay through the first days of November, you will be able to see many celebrations take place.

Damiana in Cabo: A Natural Aphrodisiac

If you've wandered into the souvenir stores in Los Cabos, you've probably wondered what exactly was inside these little bottles shaped like pregnant women. If you asked the shop keeper, they would have told you that they contained "Damiana" and that it was a natural aphrodisiac.

The small shrub turnera diffusa, more commonly known as Damiana, grows throughout Mexico, Central American and into some parts of Texas and California. The pale green oval leaves and stems are commonly dried and used to produce herbal products as well as liqueur.

Originally used by Native Americans such as the Mayans and Incas, Damiana was used as an herbal remedy for everything from weight loss to asthma. And over the years, the liqueur form of Damiana earned the reputation as being an aphrodisiac for women.

Along with goodies like chocolate and vanilla, the Native Americans introduced Damiana to the European explorers and its popularity grew.

In Los Cabos, you will find Damiana used in drinks, spa treatments and of course throughout the souvenir stores. And if you're wondering what's up with the funny looking Damiana bottle - they are sculpted in the form of the Incan goddess of fertility.

If you've purchased your own bottle of Damiana and are wondering what to do with it at home, many people suggest using it in a margarita recipe, replacing the Triple Sec.

Just be careful if you are headed to Lousiana. Damiana is considered a prohibited plant there.

Luxury at the One&Only Palmilla

I was having a hard time just selecting one picture that described the luxury that is the One&Only Palmilla. So, I included a few photos!

Cabo is known for their 5 star approach to luxury accommodations and the One&Only Palmilla is one of the hotels in Cabo that takes that to an even higher level.

Founded in the 1950s when there was almost nothing in Cabo (not even an airport), the One&Only Palmilla has managed to grow a reputation as a Cabo landmark. But don't expect anything to be old school here, except maybe the respect and attention you will receive from the staff which is rare these days. Everything about the Pamilla is attention to detail.

The moment you arrive, you are greeted with the One&Only Palmilla salute (one hand over the chest) and some goodies like popsicles and you are guided to check in with an umbrella to protect you from the sun. Talk about Luxury!

The One&Only Palmilla has many different suites and each contains fabulous amenities like private hot tubs on your balcony. A butler will unpack your clothes and hang them up (by color of course!). Fresh fruit is delivered to your room daily and you'll receive a welcome tequila beverage.

If you stay in their signature Villa Cortez, the luxury will suddenly jump to a level you didn't even know existed. 24 hour butler service and cooking staff are just some of the extra goodies included your stay.

Oreo Frappé from the Italian Coffee Company

Okay, don't laugh - this is very delicious! It's an Moka Frio Oreo* Frappé from the Italian Coffee Company. They have two locations in Los Cabos - one in the Puerto Paraiso and one at a gas station stop along the Corridor. There's a bunch more throughout Mexico (almost like a Mexican Starbucks!).

I first became addicted to this Oreo Frappé last summer when we were staying in San Jose del Cabo for the month of July. Each time we drove to Cabo San Lucas, we stopped at the Italian Coffee Company and got ourselves Oreo Frappes. Now, this Oreo Frappe is one of my favorite things to go back to Cabo and get.

I'm not sure how many calories are in it... and I hope no one ever tells me!
