Many prefer keeping toy dogs or miniature dogs as pets because they are loyal, intelligent, and good at learning tricks. They are popularly known for being very loyal and loving to their owners.

Toy dogs are exceptional choices for elderly people as they love to be loved, are lightweight (weighing on average of five pounds, bitches weighing even less) and are fiercely protective. As the name suggests, toy dogs are very small. Most of the time they are not very good with small children, except for the Pugs, which have been characterized as one of the most stable in the group of the small breeds.

Toy dogs are also great choices for people with allergies or those living in limited space. In general, they are docile and have less fur to irritate sensitive people. The best of these dogs, and there are many, are true companion animals. Their only task in life is to please people and keep them company. However, they have a small disadvantage in that they bark more often than larger dogs to get attention. But due to the small size of their vocal chords, they do so with less volume.

Despite their size, toy dogs are probably the gutsiest pups in the canine family with their big yet little voices. They bark at the mere site of other dogs and passers-by. However, this can be a problem for them. When they don’t back down against a larger animal, they sure come off worst in a battle.

Toy dogs are not limited in their gene pool by their small size. They are actually descendants of a wide variety of dog breeds. Their predominant characteristic is that most were initially bred and developed their characteristic natures when kept as a loyal companion, and are often referred to as lap dogs. On the downside, toy dogs are notorious for having bad teeth. Their small mouths and small jaws make it almost impossible to clean them adequately at home. So there is a need for regular trips to a vet to keep their teeth and gums healthy.

Breeding for appearance was only introduced in the nineteenth century. However it presents the danger of degrading the stock of healthy genes in the dog population. Before this time, dogs and puppies were bred to increase useful abilities and traits helpful for the duties they were intended for. Nowadays, breeds in some breed groups suffer from far more genetic problems than they have in the past. Some breeds that have become more and more popular over time have suffered for being bred for quantity to feed the growing demand to the detriment of the health of the pups available for sale.

Small dog breeds have become increasingly popular as companion dogs because they are very portable, highly adaptable to nearly any living environment, easier to take care of, and cheaper to take care of. Because of the availability of an overwhelming number of small dog breeds, finding that perfect small companion is a difficult task.

Just because these dogs are small, it does not always mean that they are instantly cute and sweet. Many small dog breeds, like the Pomeranian and Chihuahua, have a reputation for being temperamental, jealous, and downright spoiled at times. Small dogs are more prone to injury because of their size. Some breeds of small dogs are known for being headstrong, which is their attempt to make up for their small stature. Some, depending on their breed, may also be difficult to housebreak and train.

Their benefits as pets far outweigh any downfalls. This is shown in their continuous rise in popularity. They are wonderful family dogs and easygoing companions that are usually contented in doing what their owners do. Most just enjoy snuggling up while their owners watch a movie, while many are content with a little romp in the backyard.

Before deciding to get a small dog, it is advisable to do some research. To guide you, listed below are some of the most popular breeds of small dogs and their characteristics:

1.	Chihuahuas are known for being fiercely loyal but with a big dog attitude. Although they work well for people looking for a little watch dog, Chihuahuas may not do well with children because of their loyalty and attitude. They do best in a warm climate zone or where they can be kept indoors, unless they are of the long-haired variety.
2.	Shih Tzus are often referred to as the little lion because of their lion face and big personality. This breed commands attention and respect. Surprisingly, although they are long-haired and require regular grooming, Shih Tzus are actually considered hypoallergenic.
3.	Dachshunds or “wiener dogs” one of the most popular small dog breeds in America. They are popular because of their fun and fearless attitude, a happy personality as well as being a great companion dog. Owners need to regularly exercise them.
4.	Yorkshire Terriers are one of the smallest of the small breeds. Yorkies are actually pretty hardy and can stand up to a little rough housing. These dogs are extremely loyal companion dogs that will usually pick their favorite owner, and have a tendency towards being jealous.
5.	Pugs are sweet and lovable small dogs with lots of energy. They fit well with any type of family. They need regular exercise because they have a strong tendency towards being overweight.
6.	Pomeranians belong to the breed that loves to be spoiled. They do well with a companion that wants to make their pet the center of attention. They don’t mind sitting on their companion’s lap all day long. Poms are one of the most popular small fluffy breeds that have more bite than its bark, making it a great watchdog.

Toy dog and miniature dog breeds have become very popular because of their small size. These dogs are better suited for people living in small living spaces like apartments or houses with small backyards. Choosing small dogs over large dogs as pets have its advantages. Generally, they are easier to control and are cheaper to keep. They need relatively less food and medication, though consultations with the veterinarian come at a standard price. Miniature dogs with long hair are easier to brush and groom compared with their larger cousins.

However, not all small dogs share the same temperament or activity levels. Some of the small breed dogs came from a background where they were used for hunting, like the miniature Dachshund, and others, like the Tibetan Spaniel, bark a lot. Thus, the latter would not be ideal for apartment living, unless your apartment is sound proof.

Small breeds that need a lot of exercise include the Dachshund, the Italian Greyhound, and the Australian Terrier. Breeds like the Maltese, Pug, and Chihuahua will all do well exercising in a small backyard. If you live in an apartment and own a dog, it is recommended to take it for a walk outside at least once or twice a day. This rule basically applies to all miniature dog breeds.

There are a lot of miniature dog breeds to choose from. As an owner you need to decide which will best suit your needs. Consider important aspects such as size, temperament, and other features that will make your buying decision easier, such as coat length and care and barking tendencies.

Listed below are four miniature dog breeds that you may want to consider before making a decision in purchasing your new pet.

1. The Miniature Bull Terrier is a very playful dog that loves its family. However, it is not a good choice as a guard dog as it likes strangers as well. They love to have plenty of activities. They also love toys but they have pretty strong teeth and jaws so they tend to destroy them quite quickly. Miniature Bull Terriers tend to want to please their masters more than their larger brothers.

2. The Miniature Poodle is always a popular choice. It is one of the most well-behaved miniature dog breeds and one that every dog lover should look into. This breed is very intelligent and great with small children. Miniature Poodles can grow up to 20 pounds. They can stand about 15 inches in height.

3. The Miniature Schnauzer weighs around 15 pounds. This miniature dog breed is affectionate. It is always up for a bit of fun and is great for both city and country environments.

4. Another dog worth considering is the Lhasa Apso. Lhasa’s have a distinctively beautiful long coat. Lhasa’s are very loyal dogs with a capacity for stubbornness, which means they are better suited to those more experienced with handling dogs. Although they are lap dog size, they don’t need to be cuddled all the time, like some other lap dogs. They are independent and will come for attention when they want it. They are very affectionate by nature.

Historically, toy dog breeds were used as companion dogs. They are alert, friendly, and willing to be held and petted. They are very comforting and can bring peace to an owner. Recently, nursing homes and adult care facilities have found toy dog breeds to be soothing for their patients. Contrary to common perception, there is no law preventing animals from living in nursing homes. It is up to the eldercare facility to allow – or disallow – pets. The calming influence of any pet, especially one that will transfer affections to everyone equally, is a wonderful aid for patient facilities.
Toy dog breeds in the official list of the AKC is quite extensive. However, the more popular ones include Greyhounds, Pinschers, Terriers, Pugs, Chihuahuas, Spaniels, and Pekingese. Regardless of breed, toy dogs are desired for their cuteness and cuddle-ability. Many retain the characteristics of a puppy for their entire lives. This may be one of the big attractions that toy dog breeds hold over larger breed dogs.
There are several advantages to toy dog breeds. Besides the ease of handling a smaller-sized dog, they are more suitable for apartment dwellers because they do not require as much exercise space as a large dog. Additionally, toy dog breeds usually shed less than their larger counterparts, not because they have different coat characteristics, but because they are smaller dogs. All aspects of dog care are smaller: from grooming to clean-up and food consumed to food expelled.

Their pint size, however, does not mean that toy dog breeds are less hardy. Once they are safely past puppyhood, their energy levels and enthusiasm rival any breed of dog. Some are excellent watch dogs, but they won’t be able to follow through preventing entry of an intruder. The hue and cry of toy dog breeds can be enough to make your hair stand on end.

Each of the types of toy dog breeds requires different types and amounts of care, food, exercise, and training. They have different “personalities, temperaments and drive. If you want to own a toy dog, take time to research their good points and the less liked points of behavior and health which apply to each toy dog breed.
When choosing a dog breed it is a good idea to talk with people who have first hand experience with the breed you are interested in, such as your local veterinarian, dog trainers and dog breeders. You may also want to visit dog shows so you can talk with the owners of just about any breed. This will give you first hand information and will provide a clearer picture for you.

As the cliché goes dogs are considered as man’s best friend. Nowadays, however, these furry and loyal companions become treated more as family members rather than as pets. Some breeds, particularly the small ones, have even become an indispensable accessory for Hollywood celebrities walking down the red carpet and sharing the limelight during big events.

Small dog breeds include toy dogs and miniature dog breeds. Miniature dog breeds are smaller versions of large dog breeds. Examples of which are the miniature Dachshund, or more popularly known as Doxie, miniature Poodle, and the miniature Pinscher, which are all small versions of their larger canine cousins. These breeds are ideal for owners who have a smaller living space such as an apartment or a house without a garden. They can be the best dog breeds for older people or those who are not capable of taking their dogs for long walks each day.

Small dog breeds are sometimes referred to as teacup dog breeds because they are tiny dogs. However, this name should not be taken literally because they are not that tiny to be able to fit into a teacup. Toy dogs, on the other hand, are a dog group comprised of Terriers, Chihuahuas, Shih Tzus, and Pugs.

Dogs of smaller breeds can be easier to look after than large dog breeds in a lot of ways. They eat less and do not often require to be taken on long walks. Additionally, in general, they shed less hair than large dog breeds.

However, one should not assume that all small dog breeds know their own size so well. Some miniature dog breeds are able to take on a dog ten times their own size! There is so much to know about dog breeds before you can be certain on choosing the perfect dog breed for you.
Before getting a pet dog, it is important to consider that your chosen dog breed will suit your personality and lifestyle. Keeping a pet dog is an important long term decision and a lifelong responsibility for you and anyone you live with. It always pays to do some research to guide you in reaching the right decision.
When visualizing the type of dog you picture yourself living with for the next 10 or 15 years, the dog’s breed is just one among the many factors you need to consider. It is an important piece of the puzzle. However, picking out a breed with some if not most of the qualities you are looking for does not automatically mean you will end up with a perfect pet dog. What it means though is that you might probably discover a breed of dog which is most compatible to you and has the potential to be everything you had hoped for in a pet.

As keeping a Pug can also be one of the most rewarding decisions you’ve ever made, it’s also a huge responsibility making sure that your little Pug will grow up to be a strong, healthy companion. Although Pugs are sturdy little creatures, they always require their owner’s special attention. Pugs thrive on love, care, and affection, so always allot a portion of your day to focus solely on your Pug. Remember that you should have a give-and-take relationship with your Pug. He cheers you up when you’re down and vice versa.

Aside from your care and affection, there are also some physical health considerations for your Pug. The first of this is your little buddy’s figure. It’s commonly-accepted knowledge that Pugs should be fat. True, Pugs have cobby bodies, meaning their entire length is not longer than their height – normally 8 to 10 inches at the shoulders. But healthy Pugs are muscular and solid, and they should show off an hourglass figure when seen from the top. To keep your Pug slim and healthy, go out for daily exercise. Nothing too strenuous; an everyday regular routine such as a walk around the block is enough to keep healthy lungs and heart and maintain the right weight for your Pug.

Also, keep in mind that Pugs have short muzzles and narrow air Pug Puppytubes so they are more susceptible to breathing problems than most other breeds of dog. Avoid doing anything that can worsen this condition for your Pug, such as smoking near your Pug or exposing it to air pollutants. Smoking only increases the chances of your Pug breathing in second-hand smoke, which is, as we should all be aware of by now, harmful both to people and pets. If you want to smoke, do it a good distance away from your Pug. For example, if your Pug is inside the house, go out for a smoke. If you’re both upstairs, take the flight downstairs if you badly need to smoke. There should be no taking chances when it comes to your Pug’s health.

Another thing to remember is to avoid over-exposing your Pug to extremely high weather temperatures. Anything above 80° Fahrenheit (27° Celsius) should pop a warning sign in your head, saying this is too much for your Pug to handle. Extreme heat is the reason for many “mysterious” Pug health disorders that affect the heart, kidneys, and other major organs of your dog.

Pay special attention to grooming your Pug, although this isn’t really as challenging as it sounds once you get used to it. A special thing to focus on is the folds on your Pug’s face, where dirt can accumulate and cause infection if you don’t clean it out regularly using a Q-tip dipped in warm water and some Vaseline. You should also bathe your Pug once or twice a month and brush it every week to minimize shedding, which is actually very heavy. Also, clip your Pug’s toenails once a month. This can be very uncomfortable for your dog, but if you get others to firmly hold him down, and with just the right amount of soothing care you show him, clipping can become quite easy in time.

A Pug is one of the best dogs you can get for your children. This dog is one of the happiest, most affectionate breeds and can make a very good playmate for children and a loyal companion to adults. A Pug is also very intelligent. It can recognize the tone of disapproval in your voice if you scold it for doing something not good. This is why you don’t need to punish most pugs for them to learn.

The charming personality of Pugs goes way back in ancient history, where they were made to serve as the companions of kings, queens, and other members of Asian and European royalty. In 1600 BC China, during the Shang dynasty, Pugs were known as Lion Dogs because they looked much like the ceramic lions that guarded the palaces of Chinese royals. They were carried to Europe by merchants of the Dutch East Indie Company and it was there that this delightful breed became popular to the entire world.

Before arriving to the Americas, Pugs played a role in French history when Napoleon Bonaparte sustained communication with his mistress in jail through her Pug, Fortune, who was the only one given visitor’s rights. And who would have thought that the monarch of the conservative Victorian era also had her own Pugs? Queen Victoria herself bred Olga, Minka, Venus, Fatima, and Pedro, which were all useful in establishing Great Britain’s Kennel Club.

Pugs are generally easy to train and take care of, but there are a number of health conditions that Pug owners should know how to handle. One of the most common health practices should be the regular cleaning of the folds in Pugs’ faces. The folds, aside from making them look so adorable, are normal, but they often accumulate discharge from the eyes and dirt from anywhere they can get their heads into. This could lead to infection if not given special attention. All you need is a couple of Q-tips, a cup of warm water, and some Vaseline. Dip the Q-tip in the water and use it to wipe the folds of your Pug’s face. Next, apply some Vaseline to the folds and you’re done. This will help keep your Pug look and smell clean.

Pugs also have short muzzles, making them more susceptible to breathing problems than most other breeds. They should not be made to stay in extremely hot and poorly-ventilated areas, especially outdoors. Pugs will thrive well in places not over 80° Fahrenheit (27° Celsius).

One more thing, Pugs shed their hair heavily. The first week of owning a Pug, you’ll realize that you have fur all over your house. The second week, your closest friends will find Pug’s fur all over their houses. To help minimize shedding, use a brush with stainless steel bristles and gently comb it through your Pug’s coat every week. This will keep your happy, little buddy looking neat and well-groomed.

Chihuahuas are one of the most interesting breeds of miniature dogs. Aside from being the smallest dogs in the world, Chihuahuas also have fiery personalities that distinguish them from most other pets. Chihuahuas are extremely loyal to their owners, and if not trained properly, they can exhibit aggressiveness towards other people – mostly children – and other dogs.

Care for your Chihuahua is one of the most important issues where you must be very well-informed before deciding to get one for companionship. Chihuahuas are physically, not to mention emotionally, sensitive so you should give yours the right amount of attention if you want it to live up to its expected life span of 18 years. Here are the basic and most important things to consider when caring for a Chihuahua for the first time. As you spend more time with your pet, you’ll realize along the way that there are more things you can and should do to help it live a long and healthy life.

As for people and every other breed of dog, proper diet and nutrition is very important for Chihuahuas. Expert opinions actually vary, but generally, six-week-old baby Chihuahuas stop feeding on their mother’s milk at this time and will need about four dog meals every day to sustain them. As they grow to half a year, you can reduce the diet to three meals, and to one big meal everyday after the first year. However, like humans, most Chihuahuas prefer three small meals per day than a single big meal. Limit feeding your pet with ‘people food’ as these were not made especially for dog consumption. Chihuahua meals should be composed mainly of meat because of their body requirements of at least 30% protein and 20% fat.

Bathing options for Chihuahua also differ. One thing is for sure, though. Long-coat Chihuahuas need more bathing since it is more difficult to care for their hair than smooth-coats. They also need to be brushed daily using soft dog brushes. Smooth-coats only need brushing once a month, and you can use a clean, damp cloth instead of a dog brush to run across their fur. Both long-coats and smooth-coats need bathing at least once a month, but you have to be careful not to bathe your Chihuahua too much since this can cause dryness, dandruff, and itching. Special dog shampoos are available if you want to prevent these. You should also take care not to get water in their ears.

Chihuahuas are very active little creatures and will most likely crave for some outdoor activity from time to time. Ample romping around your apartment is good daily exercise for Chihuahuas, but take them out for a walk about three times every week to stimulate them. Be careful not to keep them out too long, though, especially in extremely hot or cold conditions because Chihuahuas are susceptible to colds.

Lastly, keep in mind that Chihuahuas want your love and attention. Shower them with these as much as possible, but remember to teach them who the master is and who the follower should be.
