Article by AllAboutMormons.com Webmaster: One of my visitors recently sent me an email asking that I address a letter published on the internet. I thought my response might be of general interest:
Hi Kendra. I'm really happy that my site has helped you maintain your faith. I'd be happy to address some of the concerns raised in the letter you sent me.

My first impression of the letter is that it is extremely disingenuous. The writer states that he "wishes the members of the Mormon Church well, and will always think of them as fine, upstanding, and loving people," but then proceeds to make all sorts of false accusations. I was able to identify the webpage from which this letter came. Let me assure, that site is hardly an accurate place to find out about Mormon beliefs. Let's look at some of the writer's specific points.

Writer: "The Mormon Church teaches that there are many Gods. The Bible teaches that there is one only."

Response: This is a misrepresentation of Mormon beliefs. The claim is "supported" by two books that Mormons do not consider to be canonical. The claim that "the Mormon Church teaches heretically that man can become a God..." is also a misrepresentation in this context. It's important to remember that early Church leaders sometimes used the word "god" in ways that other Christian denominations do not. Early Mormons sometimes used the word "god" the way it is used in the Old Testament (see, for example, Psalms 82:6). Don't be confused by quotes taken out of context.

Writer: "The Bible does not teach about a changing God who once was a man, once died, and once sinned."

Response: I thought this quote was funny. It is true that the Bible doesn't teach about a God that once sinned, and neither does Mormon doctrine, necessarily. However, the Bible definitely does describe Jesus Christ, God the Son, as a being who became a man and died. That is, in fact, the central tenet of all of Christianity!

Writer: "The Mormon Church does not understand grace, faith or salvation, and in fact teaches doctrine turned 180 degrees from the biblical truth."

Response: That's very debatable! The writer is obviously coming from an Evangelical background. Many objective academic scholars would very much disagree with the writer's assessment that his brand of Christianity has got the Bible all figured out. Note, also, that the writer again cites the Journal of Discourses, a book that is not canonical. It's interesting that there are no quotes from modern day prophets and apostles given in the letter... Why not? Doesn't that say something about the agenda being pushed here?

Writer: "[Mormonism] denies the power of Christ and exalts the pride of man."

Response: Kendra, if you know anything about Mormonism (and I think you do), you'll recognize that this statement is a lie.

Writer: "I learned as a Mormon to try to 'make myself perfect.'"

Response: Clearly the writer does not understand Mormonism. Mormons believe in Jesus Christ, who commanded in Matthew 5:48: "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect." However, we don't think we can become perfect in this life, and we believe that perfection in the life to come is only possible through Jesus.

Writer: "I learned that I needed to follow a laundry list of do's and don'ts."

Response: Of course God has given His children commandments. The Bible makes that very clear. But to suggest that Mormons believe that our good works save us is completely dishonest.

Writer: "I believed that I needed to follow a highly organized system of men placed between me and my maker to obtain God's forgiveness or work within his authority."

Response: First of all, Mormonism does stress the importance of having a personal relationship with Christ. It is insulting to think that Mormons believe they can only access Jesus through the church's "hierarchy." Additionally, this sentence makes it evident that the writer would have hated Christ's original church as well, for Christ also set up an "organized system" with prophets, apostles, pastors, and evangelists (see Ephesians 4:11). Perhaps the writer should be more careful where he casts his criticisms.

Writer: "Men are sinners- born into it- and cannot make themselves perfect. The Bible teaches that men are accepted by Christ in their sins, that he loves them, and takes them how they are. It teaches that this is a result of faith in him. It says that though their nature still remains sinful, Christ changes them from the inside as a result of faith, but not as a result of their works. The Bible teaches that Christ's infinite atonement covers all sin of all men who believe in him."

Response: Much of this is precisely what the LDS Church teaches. Buying into his new brand of Evangelical Christianity, however, the writer likes to pretend that the Bible teaches that works play no role in salvation. In fact, we are saved by accepting Jesus Christ, but to truly accept Him we need to do His will, which includes following the commandments He has given us. The Bible makes this very clear. In general, the writer make a number of claims about what the Bible "plainly" says. Suffice it to say, his Biblical interpretation is highly suspect. Many Biblical scholars--academics who have dedicated their whole lives to the study of the Bible--would disagree with his views. That doesn't mean that the academics are automatically right and he's automatically wrong. It just means that the Bible might not be as "plain" as he thinks it is.

Writer: "The Bible teaches plainly that we are saved by grace through faith. It teaches that no one will be saved by their good works."

Response: Mormons also reject the idea that our works can save us. The writer is consistently misrepresenting Mormon beliefs. As I explain on my website, "While works are required for salvation in order to satisfy the law of justice, our works are, in the end, insignificant. We must show God we want to follow Him by obeying His commandments, but even strict obedience does not 'earn' salvation. As the apostle Paul explained, despite our best efforts to follow God, in the end salvation comes through faith in and the application of Christ's atonement. In this sense, works do not save us; not that they are not required, but that they are not sufficient. Faith is required for salvation."

Writer: "The Book of Mormon is a largely plagiarized document with no historical, anthropological, archaeological basis in reality...Therefore it comes as no surprise that the Book of Mormon contains many quotations taken right from the Old Testament..."

Response: No scholar would take this charge of plagiarism seriously, especially because 1) there are vast amounts of "new" text in the Book of Mormon record, and 2) modern notions of plagiarism didn't exist in Joseph Smith's day. The New Testament also contains many quotes from the Old Testament, usually without giving credit to the original authors. Is the writer willing to dismiss that sacred book of scripture as "plagiarism" as well? Additionally, there is no "historical, anthropological, or archaeological basis" for many of the most important stories of the Bible either, including the miracles and resurrection of Jesus Christ! A testimony of scripture should be based on the whisperings of the spirit of God, not on academic evidence. That having been said, there is nevertheless some interesting academic evidence that supports the Book of Mormon.

Writer: "What is surprising is that many of these [Isaiah] passages were quoted word for word from the King James version of the Bible. What is more surprising still is that the Book of Mormon authors were able to quote from books written after 600 B. C. Let's think about this: how could Joseph Smith have translated exact word for word quotes from "reformed Egyptian" into King James style English?"

Response: Actually, it's pretty common to use existing translations to assist in the creation of new translations. Ironically, the King James version of the Bible itself borrowed heavily from previous translations! I wonder if the writer would be willing to throw out that book of scripture as well. Additionally, studies have shown that some of the differences between the Book of Mormon version of Isaiah and the King James version (and there are many) actually support the claim that the Book of Mormon is an authentic ancient Semitic text.

Writer: "The Book of Mormon purports to be the record of ancient Jews who came to the new world. This being the case, where in its text is there evidence of Jewish religion and tradition such as Passover, circumcision, any of the Jewish festivals, etc.?"

Response: In fact, there is significant evidence that the peoples of the Book of Mormon practiced the Law of Moses.

Writer: "Also, why would these Israelites have written their record in Egyptian? Lehi had lived all his life in the city of Jerusalem, where they only spoke the Hebrew language. The Jews hated the Egyptians, and even if he could have written in their language (highly unlikely) he certainly wouldn't have; the Jews were known to have an unusual love for their mother tongue."

Response: The Book of Mormon itself explains why it was written in an adapted Egyptian script; Egyptian is a more condensed writing system. The claim that Jews would never use an Egyptian script is simply incorrect. There are examples from the ancient world, like Papyrus Amherst 63, of Semitic texts being written in Egyptian.

Writer: "Also, is there any biological evidence connecting the American Indians with the Jews? There is none."

Answer: Given the Book of Mormon account, one would not expect there to be any demonstratable biological connection between these two peoples. On the other hand, there is a whole lot of DNA evidence against some core Evangelical beliefs, like the idea that all of humanity began in a single garden 6,000 years ago. It is ironic that the writer would appeal to DNA evidence.

Writer: "When the Bible talks of the city of Jericho - there is evidence to support that it existed; namely Jericho itself!"

Response: "When the Book of Mormon talks of the city of Nahom - there is evidence to support that it existed; namely Nahom itself!"

Writer: "The Bible states that Jesus was crucified under Pontius Pilate, and an inscription has been found with the name of Pontius Pilate in theater excavations at Caesarea."

Response: "The Book of Mormon states that Lehi left Jerusalem when King Zedekiah ruled, and a seal from one of Zedekiah's officials was recently discovered at the City of David."

Writer: "Unfortunately, none of this evidence even suggests a Christian civilization present in America."

Response: First of all, there is some archeological evidence that favors the Book of Mormon. Second, there is no archeological evidence in support of a Jewish civilization in ancient Egypt, despite the fact that the Bible says it was so. Is the writer willing to throw out the Bible as well? Is he not applying a double standard here?

Writer: "The Church has made a deliberate effort to distort its own history, and keep its members in the dark. As a Mormon I learned about Joseph Smith's martyrdom... I was taught that he went humbly and without resistance just as Jesus did. Can you imagine what a shock it was to me to learn that he had in fact died in a gunfight, doing his level best to kill his attackers? The following accounts from the History of the Church..."

Response: The writer claims that the church is deliberately trying to distort its history, and then, to give a "real" account of what happened, he cites a book published by the Church! If the Church were really trying to hide its history, why would it be publishing that very history for the whole world to see? A quick search of lds.org reveals that the Church has published the details of the account elsewhere as well. As recently as 2008, the Church published the following description in one of its official magazines, the Liahona: "Joseph fired six shots to try to stop the mob. Then he ran to the window. Men in the mob shot him, and he fell out of the window." Perhaps, instead of accusing the Church, the writer should invest more time in studying its published documents.

Writer: "I [John Taylor] afterwards understood that two or three were wounded by [Joseph's] discharges, two of whom, I am informed died. (History of the Church, vol. 7, pp. 102-3)"

Response: For the record, scholars believe that John Taylor was misinformed, and that Joseph killed no one. How convenient that the writer omitted that detail. Besides, am I to assume that the writer believe self-defense is never justified?

Writer: "I learned as a Mormon that while the Bible was not reliable because it had been changed, (with later study I learned it was indeed reliable) the Book of Mormon was reliable and, 'The most correct of any book on earth.'"

Response: Mormons agree with the vast majority of Biblical scholars that there have been some errors in the translation and transmission of the Bible, but we still believe that the Bible is a very reliable source of God's words. We use it regularly in our study and in our worship services. Also, Mormons hardly believe the Book of Mormon is perfect, as you imply. The very title page of the book reads, "if there are faults [in the book], they are the mistakes of men." I wonder, has the writer actually read the Book of Mormon?

Writer: "Why then has [the Book of Mormon] been changed over three thousand times? Many of these changes are grammatical, or spelling errors, but this book was supposed to have been translated directly by the power of God."

Response: It's silly to think that God would tell Joseph Smith how to spell each word. Joseph didn't even do the actual writing; his scribes did. Over the years thousands of corrections have been made to the grammar and spelling of the Bible as well. Would you be willing to throw that book out the window?

Writer: "My wife Stacey, was surprised when she looked up 2 Nephi 30: 6 in a copy of the Book of Mormon that her grandmother had given her, and then in a newer copy of mine, and found that it had been changed... At the time of this change the church had been embarrassed by their teaching that the Indians who received the gospel would turn white!"

Response: The writer's wife's grandmother must be 150 years old, then, because the correction he mentions was made in 1837 by Joseph Smith himself. The change was completely justified; in a Near-Eastern context (and yes, the Book of Mormon is a Near-Eastern document), white does not necessarily refer to a color. "Pure" was clearly a better translation. The writer also takes this verse out of context and tries to paint the Book of Mormon as a racist text. He seems to forget Book of Mormon passages like this one: "[the Lord] inviteth them all to come unto him and partake of his goodness; and he denieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female..."

Writer: "Where are those good old doctrines of the early Mormon Church like blood atonement, and the Adam-God doctrine?"

Response: First of all, these concepts, especially the Adam-God doctrine, were not the clear-cut "doctrines" the writer claims them to be. He's set up something of a straw-man argument here; Mormons simply don't believe that their prophets are infallible; certainly Biblical prophets were not infallible. Remember Jonah? Second, the "Mormon Church" prides itself on continuing revelation; past mistakes can be corrected under the continued direction of Jesus Christ, who leads His Church. Third, if the writer is really interested in bringing up changing doctrine, I'd like to point out that the founder of his own branch of Christianity, Martin Luther, was an anti-Semite who performed at least one polygamous marriage. In the southern part of the United States, His own brand of Christianity once used the Bible to justify African slavery. I don't condemn modern Protestants for these past doctrines; is it reasonable for the writer to condemn the Mormons?

Writer: "I was very surprised to learn in 1989 from a Mormon who wanted me to 'come back to the temple, because I would like it better now,' that the Lord had changed his mind yet again, and redone his sacred temple ceremony. Even as a Mormon who did not yet understand that the temple ceremony is really a Masonic ceremony copied word for word, I knew that something was wrong!"

Response: Mormons have never claimed that the temple ceremony is "unchangeable," and in fact it has been modified several times over the course of the past 150 years. Is the writer really suggesting that Protestant worship services have remained unchanged since Martin Luther? Of course practices change over time. This is especially true in the case of the LDS Church; in fact, because of modern revelation, change is to be expected as God helps us adapt eternal principles to our ever-changing times. Also, the claim that the temple ceremony is really a Masonic ceremony copied word for word is simply not true. There are some few similarities, but the differences are vast.

Writer: "In closing I wish to tell you my greatest reason for leaving the Mormon church. It is in finding Jesus Christ. He also found me. He pulled me toward him and made me ready to listen."

Response: I wonder what Christ said to the writer. Did the Savior perhaps encourage the writer to publish a lengthy letter with one example of bearing false witness against his [Mormon] neighbors after another? Perhaps we really don't worship the same Jesus! The Jesus of the New Testament would never encourage this kind of behavior.

 See the original web page

 Visit this blog

 Bear your testimony

 Updates by Email

Today, this criticism is no longer valid. However, the greatest evidence of the Book of Mormon continues to be the influence of the Holy Spirit in our hearts, which testifies of the truthfulness of the book.

 See the original web page

 Visit this blog

 Bear your testimony

 Updates by Email

Article by AllAboutMormons.com Webmaster: Many of my readers may not realize that I'm a scientist. Though I love science, I believe that society places too much confidence in scientists. In this essay, I'll explore the limits of science and why I have no trouble reconciling my belief in God with my love for scientific inquiry.

Many foolishly believe that everything of value in the universe can be assessed through science, meaning that everything of value in the universe is observable, measureable, and reproducible. Ironically, this premise is not scientifically testable. Have we any reason to think that some of the universe is inaccessible to us through scientific inquiry? Is everything important in the universe really observable, measurable, and reproducible? We face two possible barriers to a more complete understanding of the universe: physiological and cerebral.

Physiological Barriers

There is a fish, Astyanax mexicanus, which has lived for so long in the dark caves of Mexico that it has lost the ability to see; in fact, this fish has no eyes. No matter how intelligent such a fish became, it would likely never know the stars. In this case, the barrier to greater knowledge is not necessarily a lack of intelligence. Even a genius fish would probably be oblivious. Rather, much of the universe is inaccessible to the fish's mind because the fish is not physiologically capable of detecting it.

There's good reason to think that humans may have similar physiological barriers. For example, consider the neutrino. Neutrinos are subatomic particles that rarely interact with normal matter. 50 trillion solar electron neutrinos pass through each of our human bodies every second without reacting with any of our "physical" matter. Many trillions of neutrinos pass effortlessly through the whole mass of planet earth every second as well. To detect neutrinos, physicists have built a vast underground detection tank called the Super-Kamiokande containing 50,000 tons of ultra-pure water, in hopes that once in a blue moon one of the neutrinos passing through the earth will perchance react with one of the water molecules in the tank. If neutrinos were only slightly less reactive, humans could not detect them.

May physicists believe there are particles that are even less reactive, particles called "weakly interacting massive particles," or "WIMPs." These particles have never been detected; it may be that humans are not capable of directly confirming their existence. And yet, despite the physiological barriers to detection, neutrinos, WIMPs, and particles like them may be very important. They may be components of the "dark matter" that prevents our galaxy from flying apart.

Cerebral Barriers

Aside from physiological barriers, there are also likely cerebral barriers that prevent us from obtaining a complete understanding of the universe. Our minds may simply not be advanced enough to comprehend much of the universe around us. For example, there is not a single species on the planet capable of understanding general relativity, except for humans. The barrier for these species is not physiological; apes can sense gravity just as well as humans can. It's just that apes do not have minds advanced enough to comprehend relativity, despite the fact that the principles of relativity have a critical impact on their lives. Without gravity, after all, the earth would not exist. Given that every non-human species on earth has a demonstratable cerebral barrier that prevents it from fully comprehending the universe, what good reason exists to suppose that we humans are somehow free of similar cerebral barriers?

Science, especially quantum physics, is beginning to demonstrate human cerebral limitations. The universe simply does not operate in ways that we humans can intuitively understand. Consider these examples:

Though our minds perceive all matter as being composed of particles, in fact all matter is both a particle and a wave. It's not that all matter particles undulate in wave-like patterns, like water molecules moved by the ocean waves travelling through them. It's that these particles are actually also themselves waves.

When a single subatomic particle like an electron is shot in the direction of two equidistant openings, it passes through both simultaneously. It's not that the particle splits in two, and each half goes through one of the two openings. It's that the single particle in its entirety goes through both openings simultaneously.

An electron orbiting an atomic nucleus can travel from one side of the atom to the other without ever passing through an intermediate point. It's as if I could somehow walk from one end of a hallway to the other without ever passing through the middle of the hall.

When I throw a ball, my mind believes that I can know the precise position and speed of the ball at every point along its trajectory. The universe disagrees, however. As I try to measure the speed more accurately, I know less about the ball's position. As I measure the position more accurately, I know less about the speed. It's not simply that my instruments for measuring speed and position aren't accurate enough. It's that the universe itself will not allow me to know the exact position and speed of any particle. This phenomenon is totally foreign to what my brain expects, but so it is just the same.

The only reason we can even talk about these phenomena is because we can describe them mathematically despite our inability to understand them intuitively. But there is no reason to suppose that we are capable of understanding the entire universe even in mathematical terms. The correct mathematics needed to fully understand the universe may be too complex for our minds to comprehend, or it may be that much of what happens in the universe is not governed by mathematical laws.

Conclusion

Clearly, there is plenty of room for a scientist to believe in God. It is almost certain, given our physiological and cerebral limitations, that we are not capable of assessing all that is important in the universe through the scientific method alone. Even things that are "important" may be beyond our ability to detect and describe, just as blind fish can't see the stars and apes can't grasp general relativity. Science has and will continue to bring us many great benefits, but we must understand its limitations. We may only be aware of the tiniest sliver of all that exists and occurs in the universe; there's certainly room for God in our largely unknown cosmos.

 See the original web page

 Visit this blog

 Bear your testimony

 Updates by Email

Article by AllAboutMormons.com Webmaster: Many who visit my blog may not realize that I'm a scientist by day. I recently wrote the following essay for a PhD-level class I'm taking on research ethics. For those who struggle with the intersection between science and religion, this essay may be helpful. I'll be exploring these ideas further in the coming weeks.

The rightful place of science is to probe those natural phenomena that are observable, measurable, and reproducible in an attempt to answer the question, "how?" Within this context, science is a fantastically powerful tool. Scientists are well aware of this power, and they harness it skillfully. Just as important, however, is recognizing the limits of science. The rightful role of science is best understood by first identifying what is not its rightful place.

Science must recognize that not all that is important in the universe is observable, measurable, and reproducible. The hypothesis that all useful information can be accessed through scientific inquiry is, ironically, not testable by scientific means. When scientists like Richard Dawkins use their status as intellectuals to offer the "final opinion" on the very transcendent and existential questions that have puzzled humanity for millennia, they do great damage to science in the public eye. Of course scientists can participate in these discussions, but we should not suppose that our scientific training furnishes us with uncommon insights into questions unrelated to our fields of inquiry.

Scientists must recognize that scientific prowess is not necessarily correlated with ethical and moral behavior. Too many scientists suppose that their great scientific accomplishments some how provide them with an enhanced moral compass. They assume that their opinions on complex moral issues like abortion and embryonic stem-cell research constitute the only reasonable conclusion and dismiss all others as "fundamentalist" and "uneducated." Given science's track record, our claim to moral superiority is hardly well founded. The group responsible for the atrocities tried at Nuremberg and committed at Tuskegee has no right to lecture others about morality and ethics. Of course there are ethical scientists, and of course they can participate in discussions about ethics and morality, but, again, we should not assume that our scientific training furnishes us with uncommon insights into moral and ethical questions.

It is not the rightful place of science to serve as the antagonist or antithesis of religion. The perceived antagonism between science and some religious denominations has been extremely damaging to both. In all fairness, this antagonism is hardly unilateral; many religious people, especially fundamentalists, are themselves antagonistic towards science, but we as scientists certainly share much of the blame. It is not science's place to answer questions that begin with "why." These questions fall within the realm of philosophy and theology. If we openly acknowledge that we seek only to answer "how" and that our scientific training does not qualify us to answer "why," much of the perceived conflict between science and religion can be ameliorated.

If we as scientists can learn to embrace our limitations the way we've embraced our scientific accomplishments, science will assume its rightful place as a trusted means, thought not necessarily the only means, by which all of humanity, both scientists and the people they serve, can progress in the quest for truth.

 See the original web page

 Visit this blog

 Bear your testimony

 Updates by Email

Article by AllAboutMormons.com Webmaster: To join the "Mormon Church," follow these five easy steps:

Learn more about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Research reputable Mormon sites like AllAboutMormons.com and Mormon.org. Be aware of anti-Mormon sites, some of which are quite professional looking. Obviously, the best way to learn about Mormonism is always from Mormons themselves.

A Mormon missionary visiting Brazilian Mormon friends in Maceió, Alagoas, Brazil.

All potential converts need to meet several times with Mormon missionaries. Most people choose to meet with the missionaries in their homes, but you can choose to meet them elsewhere if you like. Missionaries, though not trained theologians, can help converts learn all they need to know to be productive, happy members of the Church. You can request a visit from Mormon missionaries online.

Visit the Church.

It's important that your decision to join the church be an informed one. Before joining the church, spend some time worshiping with us in our Sunday meetings. You can locate the Mormon chapel nearest your home online, or you can simply ask the missionaries. Try to get to know the members of the church in your area. Try to get to know the bishop or branch president of the congregation.

If possible, join us for one of our congregation's social gatherings during the week. Ask the missionaries about mutual, seminary, institute, enrichment meeting, Elder's quorum sporting events, and ward dinners and picnics.

The baptism interview.

Prior to baptism, there's an interview with a missionary not directly involved in teaching you. In some cases, an interview with the mission president may also be necessary.

Don't stress these interviews too much. They simply serve to make sure you're ready for baptism. Most people who sincerely desire to become members of the church have no problem with these interviews.

Baptism and the Gift of the Holy Ghost.

Baptism by immersion is usually a community affair. Members of the congregation meet together to pray, sing hymns, and offer words of support and acceptance to the person being baptized. Feel free to invite family members and friends, even if they are not members of the church. Let them know about this important commitment you're making so they can support you as well.

A Mormon missionary hugging a Mormon bishop in Aracaju, Sergipe, Brazil.

The Sunday following your baptism, the bishop or branch president will invite you to come to the front of the congregation to receive the ordinance of confirmation. Several brethren from the congregation will place their hands on your head and confirm you a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Congratulations! You've made it!

After you become a member of the Church, try to invest some time in better understanding your new spiritual home, theologically, culturally, and socially. Don't be afraid to ask for help; for some, joining the church brings significant lifestyle changes. Because Mormons have a distinct cultural and ethnic identity, some new converts experience some transient "culture shock." Talk to other members of the congregation about the challenges you face. They'll be happy to help you make this wonderful transition in your life. Good luck!

 See the original web page

 Visit this blog

 Bear your testimony

 Updates by Email

Article by AllAboutMormons.com Webmaster: Background

Interesting stonework from the Mormon Nauvoo temple.

The Church is not a historical society. Its mission is to bring people to Christ; to this end, it draws upon its rich history in search of stories that build faith. Contrary to anti-Mormon claims, the Church does not hide its history; search lds.org, and you'll find that references to "controversial" historical facts are occasionally made. Nevertheless, because these facts are not useful in helping the Church advance its mission of bringing its members to Christ, the Church usually and understandably focuses on faith-promoting stories instead.

This should come as no surprise. Catholic priests don't preach much about the inquisition. Protestant pastors don't mention Martin Luther's anti-Semitism and acceptance of polygamy. Nor should we expect these churches to constantly comment on less-than-inspiring historical facts. Like the LDS Church, these branches of the Christian tree are in the business of bringing people to Christ. Anything that does not serve that purpose belongs to the historians.

Many who are interested in history choose to study the Church beyond that which is necessarily faith promoting. Some foolishly turn to biased and misleading anti-Mormon literature. Others wisely turn to respected academians in the field of Mormon studies, historians like Richard Bushman and Terryl Givens.

Upon realizing that Mormon history is richer than previously imagined, most Mormons react in one of two ways. Some say, "I can't believe I never heard this in Church. This stuff is awesome!" It's no coincidence that most of the prominent scholars of Mormon history, scholars like Bushman, Givens, Leonard, Turley, and Walker, are faithful members of the Church. They've come to love the history, both the inspiring and the idiosyncratic.

Many, however, are troubled by Mormon history. Endless faith-promoting accounts have led some to have an ill-founded faith in prophets as perfect men. I say ill founded because such faith is not rooted in true principles. Prophets and apostles are indeed inspired men who receive God's message and transmit it to His children, but the Church has never taught that the prophets are infallible. God alone is infallible.

Is everything a prophet says inspired by God?

Joseph Smith was the first president of the Mormon Church. He received a message from God to restore Christ's ancient church in modern times.

Joseph Smith once said, "A prophet is only a prophet when acting as such." Even when acting as such, however, a prophet is not infallible. Prophets are not God's puppets; they don't simply parrot words that God whispers in their ears. They receive God's message through their hearts and minds, but they interpret that message through the lens of their own understanding and culture. Historically, I'm confident that God has merely permitted some Church policies without necessarily commanding or endorsing them. Perhaps I'll say the same 50 years from now about some current policies, in light of further truth that may be received through ongoing revelation.

On one occasion, Brigham Young taught that Church members should not assume that everything a prophet says is automatically correct or inspired of God. "I am more afraid that this people have so much confidence in their leaders that they will not inquire for themselves of God whether they are led by Him. I am fearful they settle down in a state of blind self-security, trusting their eternal destiny in the hands of their leaders with a reckless confidence that in itself would thwart the purposes of God in their salvation, and weaken that influence they could give to their leaders, did they know for themselves, by the revelations of Jesus, that they are led in the right way. Let every man and woman know, by the whispering of the Spirit of God to themselves, whether their leaders are walking in the path the Lord dictates, or not." (Journal of Discourses, 9:150)

Church history shakes me. How can I stay firm in the gospel?

If you believe in a gospel that teaches that prophets and apostles are infallible, your faith cannot and should not survive a careful study of Church history. Fortunately, such a gospel is not the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.

Early Church leaders like Joseph Smith and Brigham Young were great men of God. I know that they were called by God to serve as His prophets. It's important to remember, however, that Joseph and Brigham's day-to-day lives in the backcountry of early 19th-century America bore greater resemblance to the lives of those living in the Bronze Age that to our own modern lifestyles. These were noble and inspiring men, but they were primitive men living in a primitive civilization where magic was esteemed like science, the virgin land was thought to contain vast hidden treasures, and human life was often crushed in the merciless hands of diseases long since conquered. God always works with what He has at hand. I can't help but imagine that our Heavenly Father chuckled as He guided His boy prophet, given Joseph's primitive behavior and superstitions. (Frankly, He's probably chuckling at us still...) Nevertheless, through this flawed-but-inspiring prophet, God has established His great work.

Perhaps you, like me, have received a witness in your heart that God has restored His ancient church in modern days through prophets and apostles. With this important foundation in place, a more thorough study of Church history can be faith promoting. Joseph Smith was a poor farm boy from the American backcountry, but God used him as an instrument to advance His designs. Brigham Young subscribed to some erroneous ideas commonly held by other members of his 19th-century civilization, yet he was God's instrument too. Why can't God use us, with our imperfections? Ironically, when viewed through this lens, the idiosyncrasies of Mormon history can be just as inspiring as the stories told in Sunday school.

 See the original web page

 Visit this blog

 Bear your testimony

 Updates by Email

Article by AllAboutMormons.com Webmaster: Recently, someone asked me about my vision of the church a hundred years from now. I thought that was a very interesting question! I'm no prophet, nor do I truly know "all about the Mormons," but let me venture a guess anyway.

The People

In a hundred years, there will be between 50 and 100 million Mormons worldwide, more or less one in every hundred people on the planet. The church will continue to grow in Latin America. The recent growth in Africa will also continue full force. In a hundred years, there will be more people with African heritage in the church than people without African heritage. Many will be baptized in India and China too. In fact, there will be a temple in India.

The church will have grown substantially in the United States and Europe. Currently, many in these places are abandoning organized religion and adopting a vague notion of "spirituality." Eventually many of these people will realize that vague spirituality does not provide the same blessings and stability that organized religion does. Many of these seekers, and many of their children, will look for a new religion, and many will find the Church of Jesus Christ.

In a hundred years, we will have a Latino prophet and an apostle from sub-Saharan Africa. (Note that recently the first sub-Saharan member of the First Quorum of the Seventy was called.)

Politics

In a hundred years, we will have already had a Mormon president of the United States. I don't know if it will be Mitt Romney or Jon Huntsman or someone currently unknown, but it's just a matter of time. Although the church of today is itself progressive, many current members, especially in the United States, are now quite conservative. In a hundred years, there will be more Mormons with liberal political philosophies. Most Mormons will still be socially conservative; we'll still be opposed to abortion, homosexual marriage, etc. However, there will be more (American) Mormons in favor of immigration, government welfare programs, and other progressive programs. As has already happened, there will be many Mormon politicians in other countries, too, a result of programs like the church's Perpetual Education Fund.

The Doctrines

The doctrines of the church will be more or less the same as today, but we Mormons will have received more light and knowledge through ongoing modern revelation. The church will still be in favor of the traditional family. There will be no gay sealings or gay marriages in the church. However, church members will have a greater understanding of the doctrine already taught in the church regarding homosexuality. Consequently, those who feel same-sex attraction, and even those who choose to break the law of chastity, will feel more comfortable worshiping with us, although the latter will not be granted temple recommends. (Note that there are already many "gay Mormons" that feel comfortable worshiping with us; the number will only grow.)

Unfortunately, I believe anti-Mormonism will still exist in a hundred years. We cannot expect paradise. :)

 See the original web page

 Visit this blog

 Bear your testimony

 Updates by Email

Are you Suffering from Depression? (Mormon Mormons)

Article by AllAboutMormons.com Webmaster: Depression is a major problem both in and out of the church. About 10% of the human population has a depressive episode at least once during their lifetime. Dear friends, I hope this article will help those of you who suffer from depression to find peace and happiness through Jesus Christ.

Reactive Depression

Reactive depression is a normal response to a heartbreaking event. It's normal to feel sad when tragic events like the death of a loved one occur. The Church can do a lot to help those who suffer from this kind of temporary, reactive depression. The Church...

teaches that God loves us, even when life is hard,

teaches that we'll see our deceased loved ones again one day, giving hope for the future,

helps us find forgiveness through Christ's atoning sacrifice, helping alleviate personal guilt, and

provides a supportive community.

Endogenous Depression

Endogenous depression is a second, more serious kind of depression. This kind of depression is a biological, organic disease like diabetes, osteoporosis, and arthritis. Endogenous depression usually arises from a neurochemical imbalance in the brain. Multiple genetic factors are responsible for this complex condition, including a well-characterized mutation in the 5-HTT gene. Depression is highly heritable, meaning its genetic causes can be passed down from parents to children. The effects of these genes can be triggered by social, psychological, and developmental factors.

A number of criteria are used to diagnose endogenous depression (major depressive disorder). Here are some of the symptoms:

Sadness or loss of interest in previously enjoyable activities, for more than two weeks

At least two weeks of five or more of the following symptoms:

Sadness in adults, or anger, irritability, and acting out in children and young teens

Loss of interest in previously enjoyable activities

Weight changes (gain or loss)

Sleeping problems (too much or too little)

Agitated or slowed behavior

Fatigue

Thoughts of worthlessness or extreme guilt

Reduced ability to think, concentrate, and make decisions

Frequent thoughts of death or suicide

The diagnosis also requires the absence of great distress or difficulty, drug use, intermediate episodes of hyperactivity, and reactive depression lasting less than two months.

Endogenous depression requires two kinds of treatment, both medical/psychological and spiritual.

Medical/Psychological Treatment

Priesthood blessings can offer some comfort, but endogenous depression usually requires medical and psychological intervention. There are a number of medicines that can correct the biological, neurochemical imbalance in the brain, including sertraline, escitalopram, fluoxetine, paroxetine, citalopram, venlafaxine, and bupropion. A good psychiatrist with a medical degree can prescribe these medications. Additionally, psychological treatments like psychotherapy, together with medicine, are critical for many patients as well. Depression is only a chronic problem in 15% of all depressed patients; most patients recover from depression.

Spiritual Treatment

Satan does not cause depression; depression has a biological cause that is influenced by social, psychological, and developmental factors. However, Satan does sometimes take advantage of those who are depressed. He tells them terrible lies. Satan tells the depressed that they are worthless, that they don't deserve God's love. Because Satan tries to exploit human weaknesses, many who suffer from depression need spiritual healing as well as medical and psychological healing.

The Church can be such a blessing for those who suffer from depression. Satan tells the depressed that they are worthless, but the Church teaches that we are all children of God. Satan tells the depressed that they don't deserve God's love, but the Church teaches that God loves all His children. Satan tells the depressed that no one cares about them, but the Church provides a supportive community. Jesus Christ can heal the spiritual consequences of Satan's assault on the depressed. Together with medical and psychological treatment, those with endogenous depression can be made whole. You can recover!

Suicide

Depression can be a deadly disease. In the United States, 3.4% of people with endogenous depression commit suicide, and up to 60% of all people who commit suicide have depression. If you are contemplating suicide, get medical, psychological, and spiritual help immediately! There is no reason to suffer alone. You are a valued child of God with a treatable disease. Talk to your doctor. Talk to your bishop or branch president. Call the suicide hotline for help at 1-800-SUICIDE if you need to. God loves you; He wants to see you whole.

You can learn more about depression on The Mormon Therapist Blog.

 See the original web page

 Visit this blog

 Bear your testimony

 Updates by Email

Article by AllAboutMormons.com Webmaster: I'm something of a lay clergyman in a small San Diegan branch of Hmong Mormons. The Hmong are an oppressed minority in Laos. Because of the violence in their homeland, some fled to the United States, where many encountered Mormonism.

Recently, there was a death in our branch. We'll all miss sister Tong Yang. The funeral was an interesting display of Hmong culture, together with some Mormon elements. Like Mormons, the Hmong also have ceremonial burial clothing. In the Hmong tradition, each daughter of the deceased woman places clothing on her mother's body. If a woman has many daughters, she is buried with several layers of clothing. Because sister Yang had been through the Mormon temple, her ceremonial temple clothing was included as one of the layers. It was a beautiful merging of cultures. In her eulogy, sister Yang was described as a woman who "taught her children to treasure their pioneer heritage." I think the phrase "pioneer heritage" probably referred to her Laotian roots, but the phrase is clearly Mormon in origin. And in a way, I think its Mormon connotations are appropriate. Sister Yang's son is in our branch presidency. She may not have been a literal descendent of the 19th-century Mormon pioneers, but she had made their legacy her own, and she did pass that pioneer heritage on to some of her children. She was our adopted sister.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is for all peoples, all cultures. We are all children of the same loving Father in Heaven.

We'll miss you sister Yang!

 See the original web page

 Visit this blog

 Bear your testimony

 Updates by Email

Article by AllAboutMormons.com Webmaster: I recently watched a video of Susan Boyle's first performance on "Britain's Got Talent," Britain's version of "American Idol." God taught me an important lesson through this seemingly secular video.

When Susan Boyle first came on stage, everyone thought she was so ordinary. Susan is a bit overweight and somewhat awkward looking. People smirked at her and rolled their eyes. She seemed so valueless. After her performance, however, her great personal value was apparent. People looked at her in astonishment. This seemingly ordinary woman was, in fact, a superstar!

The English theologian C. S. Lewis once said, "There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations--these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit..."

Isn't Susan Boyle's performance just like life? We live our whole lives being told that we are ordinary, little more than intelligent animals. One day, though, all of us will stand before a judgment bar, just like Susan did. In that moment, perhaps we'll realize just how valuable we really are. We're not ordinary. We're not common. We're sons and daughters of God.

Of course, this analogy has its limitations. It puts Simon Cowell in the role of the Final Judge, which is very hard to swallow indeed! :)

 See the original web page

 Visit this blog

 Bear your testimony

 Updates by Email

Mormon leaders decided they needed to settle in a distant land where no one could persecute them. They decided to leave the United States and settle in the Great Basin, which was then part of Mexico. Their journey was very difficult. It would have been easy for them to turn their backs on their Church and to give up their beliefs, but 50,000 Mormons made the long journey to Utah. 6,000 died on the plains.

For 150 years, Mormons all around the world have thought about those early pioneers with great admiration. "Could I make that kind of sacrifice for God?" many ask themselves. As an avid reader of Mormon blogs, I have had the privilege of hearing from many people who have made this kind of heroic sacrifice. They don't have a passive faith; their faith compels them to do things that are personally inconvenient, but they value their dedication to God more than their personal desires.

Gay Mormons

Listen to an interesting interview with a gay Mormon.

I've read a number of messages from Mormons that struggle with same-sex attraction. Regardless of the cause of their homosexuality, they have not chosen their attractions. How easy it would be for them to leave the Church and give in to their natural tendencies! After all, many gay Mormons do leave and are quite vocal about their opposition to Mormonism. And yet there are many - probably tens of thousands worldwide - who stay in the church despite their struggles with homosexuality. Rather than act on their impulses, they choose abstinence or, in some rare cases, heterosexual marriage. If they fall, they get back up; they repent and return to Church activity. These latter-day saints possess the same faith had by the 19th-century Mormon pioneers. The following are quotes taken from gay Mormon bloggers with links included. I hope you can find inspiration in their messages as I have.

Putting God First

"Why do [I] live [my] life [as an active latter-day saint]? ... I would give up much more than I would gain [were I to abandon my faith]. There is no doubt I have a strong desire to be with a man. Such a relationship would be fun and fulfilling to a degree, but I would forfeit many other things. The peace and happiness I receive from living the Gospel the best I can is real. I love the Lord, His commandments, and my covenants with Him." (LDSGayRM)

"I have found, even in the light of SSA, when I put the Lord first through obedience and thought, the SSA falls into it's proper place, and much of it has fallen out of my life. I think the more we do this, the closer we come to our eternal potential. When we put the Lord first - no matter what, one day we'll wake up and realize just how much we've changed. It really is amazing." (How I Deal)

"I knew that if I wanted to be in a same sex relationship, I would have to know that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was not the true church. Over the coming months, I immersed myself in scripture study and prayer. I attended meetings and even accepted a calling in the ward. Ever so slowly, the spirit of truth and righteousness crept into my life until I knew that I could not deny the truthfulness and goodness of the Savior... [I am ] a Latter Day Saint who likes men but loves God." Hope that I did some good. Came home still liked guys. But I had gained something I didn't have before I left. A real testimony of the gospel and the atonement, not just a belief in God." And ultimately, I know and recognize that all this has come from Heavenly Father. He promised that He wouldn't leave us down here alone. I'm grateful to Him for all He has blessed me with." (A Struggler)

"Because of the peace I experience as I strive to know and live the doctrines of the gospel, I continue striving and moving forward. It's not easy, but the reward is worth it... I believe in Jesus Christ. I believe in the gospel -- the good news -- he declared while he lived on earth. I also believe that he does call prophets and apostles to speak for him today. Because I know they represent Christ, I trust my life to their teachings." (Jake Beane)

"Through my trials, especially with SSA, I am coming to know who the Lord really is. I am beginning to know Him and what He wants. But just as importantly, my trials are helping me know who I am. Stripped of pride, I see that I am strong. Humbly, I see just how brave it is to face another day even with all the obstacles ahead of me. I've learned that even when it feels like I am ready to break, knowing that God won't push me further than I can handle has allowed me to find out just how far I can go. Then when God releases the pressure and I am able to relax a bit, I see that I endured more than I ever though possible" (Reaching Upward)

"I have a testimony of the religious principles which I claim as my own. It all became public when they found me on the back seat of the bus reading The New Era. My secret was out. I was Mormon and everyone knew. But instead of feeling ashamed, I felt relieved. I felt free. I was Mormon and I didn't care who knew it!" I'm not doing this to live up to somebody else's expectations. I'm doing this because it's what I want to do. I feel no anger at the church. I've had no bad experiences with respect to being gay and in the church, even when I've come out to church leaders and a few friends. It's all been positive."

Article by AllAboutMormons.com Webmaster: Many wonder about life after death. The next life isn't about fire, brimstone, pitch forks, and daemons. It isn't about white-robbed harp players sitting on clouds for all eternity. The next life is far more awesome and inspiring than any mortal mind can imagine. It's an eternal journey of personal progress, personal improvement. It's about becoming more like God Himself. Beginning this journey comes at a cost; it requires a very great and very specific commitment.

What happens at death?

At death, the human spirit and body are separated. The spirit goes to a comfortable place after death. Most spirits will not have made the specific commitment required to continue on their eternal journey, mostly because they were never taught how. They will be stuck. Those few spirits who learned how to make this commitment while alive on Earth will eagerly share what they know. God Himself will also see to it that every one of His children has every opportunity to commit themselves to eternal progress. Given this opportunity, each spirit will choose the level of commitment with which they are most comfortable, according to their own desires and passions.

Jesus Christ will be the final judge.

The Day of Judgment

Once all have had the opportunity to commit themselves to eternal progress, whether while alive on Earth or after death, God will judge each spirit individually. He'll look at the things we did on our own while alive on Earth, back when we were not in His immediate presence and under His immediate influence. He'll judge us based on the knowledge we possessed. He'll also evaluate our level of commitment to eternal progress. How much do we really want it? How much are we willing to sacrifice for it? Only God can know our hearts completely; His judgment will be entirely just.

A very few of God's spirit creations will have completely abandoned Him. These few will be cast out of His presence. Their progress will be barred or damned. Their spirits will spend eternity in a place of darkness.

The vast majority of God's children, however, will demonstrate at least some commitment to continued personal progress. For these, God will reconstruct physical bodies. Spirit and body will once again be reunited and will remain united for all eternity. Unlike our frail mortal bodies, these new bodies will be free of all disease and weakness.

Jesus Christ paid the price for our sins.

Though all of God's children are undeserving, having rejected God's will in varying degrees, the divine Father has provided a way to pay the spiritual debts we have all incurred through our sins. Because our debts will be paid, the vast majority of us will go to a place of peace and happiness, a place much better than this world. The vast majority of us are going to heaven.

The Final Destination

Some families will demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to eternal progress. They'll be willing to sacrifice any personal desire or passion that is not in harmony with God's will. These will feel a strong desire to let their own wills be caught up in and made one with God's will. Some of these families will be among those few who first committed themselves to eternal progress while still alive on Earth. Most will make the commitment after death, when the opportunity is first presented to them.

The eternal fate of these families will be to spend all of eternity under God's careful tutelage. They will spend all of eternity obtaining new knowledge and growing in power and glory; it is God Himself that will show them the way. As they grow greater and greater, God will trust them enough to allow them to access His divine power. Under God's careful direction, they too will be allowed to participate in Creation itself. It will bring God indescribable joy to see that some of His children have evolved to the point that they can be entrusted with such great power. It is to obtain this joy that God first initiated Creation. This process of personal progress and learning will continue for all eternity.

For the most committed of God's children, then, it turns out that the afterlife is a lot more like a university than a vacation. Who knew?

 See the original web page

 Visit this blog

 Bear your testimony

 Updates by Email
