Secret Recording from Inside a Mormon Chapel! (Mormon Mormons)

Article by AllAboutMormons.com Webmaster: Okay, I guess it's not so secret, since weekly Mormon worship services are open to the public. In fact, it even says "Visitors Welcome" on the sign out front. Also, I'm pretty sure the leader of the congregation saw me carrying my recorder as I walked to the pulpit. He didn't seem to object.

I confess. The title of this post constitutes shameless link baiting. I just wanted you to click on my link, so I tricked you. That's deception, and I apologize for it. But since you're already here, why not listen to a recording of a sermon I recently preached at my local Mormon congregation? I worship with a group of Hmong Mormons. The Hmong are from Southeast Asia. They fought on the side of the Americans during the Vietnam War. When communists took over the Laotian government, the Hmong became a very oppressed people, and many fled to the United States. Trust me, these are some very interesting Mormons.

Article by AllAboutMormons.com Webmaster: "If You Could Hie to Kolob" is a pioneer hymn written by William W. Phelps. "Kolob" is a Mormon word that, roughly translated, means "God's thrown." Some scholars think "kolob" may have evolved from the semitic root QLB, which means "heart, center, middle," in harmony with the hypothetical central position of God's thrown in the universe He has created. It's a word that modern Mormons rarely use. Whether Kolob has literal or symbolic meaning is an unsettled theological question in Mormonism. Hope you enjoy the hymn!

If you could hie to Kolob In the twinkling of an eye,
And then continue onward With that same speed to fly,
Do you think that you could ever, Through all eternity,
Find out the generation Where Gods began to be?

Or see the grand beginning, Where space did not extend?

Article by AllAboutMormons.com Webmaster: "Adam-ondi-Ahman," a little-known Mormon pioneer hymn, refers to a 19th-century Mormon belief. At the last day, Christ will gather together the great patriarchs and prophets, back to Adam, at a place called Adam-ondi-Ahman. According to Mormon belief, this grand counsel will meet prior to Christ's second coming.

This arrangement is quite modern! Hope you enjoy!

This earth was once a garden place,
With all her glories common;
And men did live a holy race,
And worship Jesus face to face,
In Adam-ondi-Ahman.

We read that Enoch walk[e]d with God,
Above the pow[e]r of Mammon:
While Zion spread herself abroad,

Article by AllAboutMormons.com Webmaster: The words of the famous Mormon hymn "Come, Come Ye Saints" were written by the Mormon poet William Clayton on April 15, 1846. After having fled state-authorized genocide in Missouri several years earlier, as well as the mobocracy of Illinois, thousands of Mormons found themselves in the wilderness, on the trail to their new desert home in Utah. William Clayton wanted to write a song that expressed his trust in God. Despite the hardships he'd suffered, he knew God would help the Mormons find their rest in the wilderness. "Come, Come Ye Saints" has become a beautiful symbol of the Mormon migration to the western United States.

Come, come, ye Saints, no toil nor labor fear;
But with joy wend your way.
Though hard to you this journey may appear,
Grace shall be as your day.
'Tis better far for us to strive
Our useless cares from us to drive;
Do this, and joy your hearts will swell-
All is well! All is well!

Why should we mourn or think our lot is hard?
'Tis not so; all is right.
Why should we think to earn a great reward
If we now shun the fight?
Gird up your loins; fresh courage take.
Our God will never us forsake;
And soon we'll have this tale to tell-
All is well! All is well!

We'll find the place which God for us prepared,
Far away in the West,
Where none shall come to hurt or make afraid;
There the Saints will be blessed.
We'll make the air with music ring,

Article by AllAboutMormons.com Webmaster: James Montgomery penned the hymn "A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief" in 1826, set to the tune of George Coles' "Duane St." It was Joseph Smith's favorite hymn; in fact, John Taylor sung it to him in Carthage Jail just before he was murdered by a bigoted mob. The hymn preaches a powerful sermon; kindness to God's children is equated with kindness to the Savior Jesus Christ Himself. Hope you enjoy my arrangement!

A poor wayfaring Man of grief
Hath often crossed me on my way,
Who sued so humbly for relief
That I could never answer nay.
I had not pow'r to ask his name,
Where-to he went, or whence he came;
Yet there was something in his eye
That won my love; I knew not why.

Once, when my scanty meal was spread,
He entered; not a word he spake,
Just perishing for the want of bread.
I gave him all; he blessed it, brake,
And ate, but gave me part again.
Mine was an angel's portion then,
For while I fed with eager haste,
The crust was manna to my taste.

I spied him where a fountain burst
Clear from the rock; his strength was gone.
The heedless water mocked his thirst;
He heard it, saw it hurrying on.
I ran and raised the suff'rer up;
Thrice from the stream he drained my cup,
Dipped and returned it running o'er;
I drank and never thirsted more.

'Twas night; the floods were out; it blew

Wine, oil, refreshment--he was healed.

But from that hour forgot the smart,

In prison I saw him next, condemned

The tide of lying tongues I stemmed,
And honored him 'mid shame and scorn.
My friendship's utmost zeal to try,
He asked if I for him would die.
The flesh was weak; my blood ran chill,
But my free spirit cried, "I will!"

Then in a moment to my view
The stranger started from disguise.
The tokens in his hands I knew;
The Savior stood before mine eyes.
He spake, and my poor name he named,
"Of me thou hast not been ashamed.
These deeds shall thy memorial be;
Fear not, thou didst them unto me."

"The Spirit of God" was sung at the dedication of the Kirtland temple in 1836 and was included in the first Mormon hymnal. To this day it is one of the most beloved hymns of the Latter-day Saint movement. Hope you enjoy!

The Spirit of God like a fire is burning;
The latter day glory begins to come forth;
The visions and blessings of old are returning;
The angels are coming to visit the earth.
We'll sing & we'll shout with the armies of heaven:
Hosanna, hosanna to God and the Lamb!
Let glory to them in the highest be given,
Henceforth and forever: amen and amen!

The Lord is extending the saints' understanding-
Restoring their judges and all as at first;
The knowledge and power of God are expanding
The vail o'er the earth is beginning to burst.

In this the first episode of "The Mormon Jungle," "Peter Priesthood" and "Molly Mormon" discuss the film and explain the historical background behind the tragedy in hopes of helping new members and those who are investigating the LDS Church to better understand the real story of this terrible massacre.
