I am writing about several different cultures, one of which is the Mormon culture; however, I am finding it hard to find statistics on poverty levels in the Mormon church, or even just average income of church members. I don't think the Church itself keeps direct records regarding the income of its members. My impression is that American Mormons are very much a middle-class people, with some notable exceptions like Mitt Romney, Willard J. Marriot, Jon Huntsman, etc. <br><br>A recent <a href="http://pewforum.org/docs/?DocID=376" target="_blank" title="mormon income">Pew Forum survey</a> seems to confirm this suspicion. Surprisingly, it is not true that Christianity is "closed to any such possibility." Writing in the Vatican newspaper in 2008, the astronomer Father José Gabriel Funes, director of the Vatican Observatory near Rome, said that intelligent beings created by God could exist in outer space.<br><br>Mormons do not spend much time talking about life on other planets. Most Mormons would be very skeptical of the stories of ET abductions and "encounters of the third kind" we occasionally see depicted on TV and in the movies. Christianity seems to be closed to any such possibility.<br><br><b>Answer by Anonymous: </b>Usually this is a loaded type of question, but for the sake of simply giving an answer I will give you my opinion for what it is worth. <br><br>We learn in LDS theology that this planet isn't the only planet that God has created and peopled with his children. That said I know that God isn't a God of confusion and he keeps his planets very separate and in order. For instance any heavenly messenger that appears to this planet are only ones that has either lived on this planet, or will live on it.<br><br>As per different formed beings, so called extra terestrials, I feel that this type of creation would throw a piece of confusion on the works of God. As per the little green man, or even tall, big eyed human-like, but not really, beings being in existence, why would God create different beings and allow them to make contact with his children on one of his earths? That would throw a large measure of confusion, contention, and doubt upon a world where such may take place. <br><br>So human beings on this earth are not the only beings in existence, but God in his wisdom puts his children on planets far enough apart so that their inhabitants do not encounter each other. They would never adopt their writing style.<br><br><b>Answer by Richard: </b>There is a promise in the Book of Mormon, found in <a href="http://scriptures.lds.org/en/moro/10/3-5#3" target=_"blank">Moroni 10:3-5</a> which directs the sincere reader to ask of God to see if the book is true. As directed in those scriptures, those who ask in truth and have real intent have witness from the Holy Ghost that the book is what it says it is. Here are a few examples:<ol><li>The Nephites built temples, as required by the Law of Moses. See 2 Nephi 5:16 and Mosiah 2:1, for example.</li><li>In several verses, the prophet Nephi criticizes the Lamanites (another people described in the Book of Mormon) because they abandoned the dietary requirements of the Law of Moses. See 2 Nephi 5:24, Enos 1:20, and Jarom 1:6, for example.</li><li>Moses 1-6 describes the Feast of the Tabernacle, an ancient Jewish festival that was part of the Law of Moses. Some of the details of this feast cannot be found in the Bible and were only discovered by scholars years after Joseph Smith. If Joseph had invented the Book of Mormon, how did he know these details?</li><li>The Book of Mormon prophet Abinadi recites the Ten Commandments (Mosias 13).</li><li>Sacrifices and burnt offerings are also mentioned in several Book of Mormon verses, in harmony with the Law of Moses. While Mormons certainly respect those whose ideas differ from our own, we feel that it is important to consider the Bible as a whole and not to cherry-pick isolated scriptures to support a pre-conceived notion. <br /><br />In reality, there are many Bible passages that support the idea that human beings can see God. In Old-Testament times, Moses and others saw God (Exodus 24:9-11, 33:23). In fact, Moses even spoke to God face to face (Exodus 33:11). The New Testament also teaches that human beings can see God. Clearly many saw Jesus Christ, who is God the Son, both before and after His resurrection. Acts 7:55-56 describes Stephen's vision of God the Father as well. <br /><br />How can scriptures like John 1:18 be harmonized with those like Acts 7:55-56? Does the Bible contradict itself? Perhaps, though Mormons see no contradiction. We believe that a mortal man cannot look upon God without perishing, unless God permits Himself to be seen through the power of His Holy Spirit (Moses 1:11). Interestingly, though Joseph Smith couldn't have known it, early Christians also held a similar view. As described in the Clementine Homilies, "For I maintain that the eyes of mortals cannot see the incorporeal form of the Father or son, because it is illumined by exceeding great light. For he who sees God cannot live. For the excess of light dissolves the flesh of him who sees; unless by the secret power of God the flesh be changed into the nature of light, so that it can see light."<br /><br />In modern times, Joseph Smith saw God the Father and God the Son, much like Stephen did in Acts 7. However, I don't think I have ever met an educated member of the Church who questioned their existence.<br /><br />I know some religions question the existence of the dinosaurs because they believe the earth was literally created in seven days, and science tells us that the dinosaurs preceded humans by many millions of years. Mormon theology is, in general, much more friendly towards science. Many Mormons, for example, believe that the seven "days" described in Genesis were actually seven creative periods, each comprising millions of years.
