ARTIST STATEMENT:

Paintings by Allan Chow

Dancing between Impressionism and Expressionism, Allan Chow’s series of prairie paintings acknowledges the world that once thrived and all efforts protecting the majestic tallgrass prairie that struggles to exist today’s modern civilization. With his intuitively developed palette and bold, spontaneous strokes of his palette knife, he gives form to the prairie and sky. Allan received his BFA in illustration from the Kansas City Art Institute. He has established a national following with his solo exhibitions, prestigious list of collectors including the Kansas Chiefs: Arrowhead Art Collection, Kansas City Royals, the University of Kansas Medical Center, H&R Block and private collections in Seattle, California, Hong Kong and Malaysia. He has given lectures at Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, University of Kansas City – Missouri and featured in The Artist’s Magazine, International Artist Magazine, Societies of Illustrators of Los Angeles, New York and Korea.

2014 Painting Demo at Utrecht

Ambitious as always, finishing a painting with details as intricate as the Broadway Bridge, I was afraid that I wouldn't finish or at least produce something decent in two hours. Anyway, here are some images of the progress. I didn't even have time to pencil a sketch in so I just decided to draw as I applied paint and see where it led me. Well, I have a few more hours left in the studio but not bad. Thank you Utrecht as always!

ALLAN CHOW

What type of media did you use to create your artwork?

I use traditional oil paint on canvas. My tool of choice is a palette knife. The palette knife allows me to build my expressionistic and bold paint strokes.

Can you tell us a little about your selected design?

"Prairie Sunrise" is part of a triptych series inspired by majestic Flint Hills. The most vivid memory of the prairie is during my trip to the Symphony in the Flint Hills. I remember the perpetual landscape moving with the music provided by the Kansas City Symphony. It was magical!

Who or what inspires your work?

My beautiful wife, Hannah, nature, life and God's calling. There is just so much to say with my work and I am so thankful and blessed for the positive and inspiring messages they provide admirers of my work.

Do you have a favorite museum?

No. I actually have TWO. Our Nelson-Atkins Museum and the National Art Gallery in London by far moved me.

What would your desert island playlist include?

Salsa music for sure. Some of my favorite musicians are Hector Lavoe and Tito Puente.

Why did you want to become a Red Dirt Artist Collaborator?

I am doing my part to support and encourage organizations that are making the effort to collaborate with artists to make a difference in this world.
