Technology brings us new gadgets every day but we've always seemed to be dreaming of gadgets more than we see them come to reality. We wrote about historical predictions of future technology before but unfortunately cars are still not flying and Mattel still didn't make that hoverboard yet. However, it seems like the last couple of years we've been seeing more 'futuristic' gadgets come to life and transparent screens definitely fit that category.

Putting your Time in some Perspective

Time is a funny thing. Sometimes it flies, other times it seems to crawl by. How long is 15 minutes really? Or 2 months? Those things can make a lot more sense when you put it in some perspective. For example by how much you could do in that period of time. "Time it Takes to..." is a cool little webapp calculator that translates your time into things you can do.

Bend to Zoom

Some time ago we talked about the introduction of a new technology by 3M that allowed flexible touchscreens and we stated that it was just a matter of time before the technology would be put to use. Looks like were there! Last week a few manufacturers presented prototypes of devices with this technology put to use. Nokia introduced the Nokia Kinetic Device (video below) that uses bending of the device as a form of input to, for example, pinch to zoom (or in this case bend to zoom).

And some days later Samsungs Vice President reportedly stated that their company will come out with a smartphone and/or table with flexible touchscreen somewhere in 2012 (again: video below of an earlier prototype).

Things are moving quickly! And the time between renders of awesome concepts to actual products in the stores seems to get shorter every year!

How many of you have your phone lying next to you in bed at night? Or feel a form of anxiety or emptiness when your phone is not around or not working? Chances are you recognize this. Flexible screen phone concept

Not too long ago we reported on flexible transparent touch screens developed by 3M. But 3M is not the only company active in this game. Samsung is also working on prototypes of flexible AMOLED displays that are apparently already in a far phase of development.

Now, development of a new technology is one thing. It gets really interesting when people start thinking of how they can apply this new technology in actually products. 3M showed us a video of potential uses and now Heyon You also came up with a rather cool concept: a flexible phone.

Just like with the 3M concepts; dont feel too bummed out that its just a concept. The technology is now there, so its only up to the imagination of the manufacturers to really start putting products like these in production!

Creative wires solution

The problem with all the electronics and gadgets we have in and around our homes these days is that were often driven crazy by all the wires that come along with them and all the hassle we put into trying to hide as many of them as possible. In fact, we seem to be so focused on hiding or organizing wires that some creative solutions can be so obvious that you simply think past them. XMBC user Palle Olsen didnt and instead of hiding them, used the wires of his Playstation 3 media center to create a very interesting line composition on his wall. Theres a simple tutorial on the XMBC blog page that shows how this project was realized.

We talked about how trendy it is to have electronics with a natural look and feel in our wood and ceramic speakers article. And the BookBook for iPhone case is another beautiful example of that. That the company was founded in 1925 doesnt mean theyre old fashion. The BeoSound 5 has a beautiful 10.4 inch display and loads of ways to connect your music to the device, whether its via an external harddrive, usb stick, bluetooth or streaming over the internet. The BeoSound wil play your tunes and make them look pretty. $3500,- is a steep price but.. look how pretty is it! More details information in the video:

iPhone controlled kitchen island

Not everything geek related needs to be practical. Sometimes things are just cool for the sake of it. This iPhone controlled kitchen island that sinks into the floor by the press of a button is an example of that. Its an impressive do-it-yourself project and undoubtedly to some practical use to the owner of the kitchen. The likelihood of this going mainstream is slim to none though. Still, you have to admit that its an awesome sight (maybe even more so with the cat on top of it) and it could give your kitchen a very futuristic feel. Give the video a go and judge for yourself. A gimmick, but an impressive DIY project.

Wood and ceramic speakers

There is something very lovable about technology with a natural, physical feel. Its something designers often pursue. From the desktop and trashcan metaphor with objects that have natural shades, to Apple designers making an ebook flip pages and using wood elements in their apps. You see this earthy masking of technology happening in physical objects more and more too and these natural speakers by Dutch design studio Joon & Jung are a beautiful example of that.

With the ceramic, wood and leather construction it has a sympathetic and unique feel about it and apparently the porcelain gives the sound it produces a natural feeling of resonance, resembling the distinct flair of an acoustic instrument right in front of you.. Though these speakers are handmade in a limited edition, it gives great inspiration on giving regular speakers a completely different look (like weve seen in the hidden lamp speakers) and possibly sound.

Flexible transparent touchscreens

Another cool concept video. 3M, the company famous for introducing the world to post-it notes and sandpaper, has created a technology for flexible transparent multi-touch screens. Its not hard to think of applications for this technology and with this (mock-up) video 3M shows us a few. Now its up to the hardware designers to actually start using the flexible touch screens.

[3M is] already producing these touch sensors, and the first place you'll see them is in mobile phones later this year that will be taking advantage of the sensor's ultra-thin bezel, five times thinner than anything else. As for curved and flexible electronics, 3M has the hardware that enables designers to create these new form factors, so it's really just a matter of time, probably (hopefully) a short time.

Money shredding alarm clock

You snooze, you lose and time is money all wrapped into one bedroom gadget. This alarm clock concept holds your dollar bills and starts shredding them if you ignore the alarm. That will make you want to jump up in the morning! A word of warning though: US law dictates that its illegal to destroy money and you could risk a month imprisonment and/or a $100,- fine. A prospect to keep in mind if you decide shredding your $100 bill is worth the extra 5 minutes sleep.

iPhone dock keyboard

Most of us sit behind a computer for a large portion of the day. And oftentimes theres a phone lying next to it. The Omnio WOWkeys keyboard combines the two in a quite clever way. Its basically a keyboard with an iPhone or iPod dock on the right side. It has a USB connection and will charge the phone while connected. But the iPhone can also be controlled with the keyboard. With the push of a button you control either your PC/Mac or your iPhone. Imagine a situation where youre working behind your computer and get some text messages on your phone you quickly want to reply to. You wont have to switch from your computer to your phone but can simply use the comfort of your keyboard to quickly reply. The keyboard also has 12 dedicated iPhone hotkeys for music control on your iPhone or to turn the screen off and on.

But it can also work the other way around. With the help of some apps you can, for example, use the iPhone as a trackpad for your computer or as a dynamic customizable keyboard extension like a numpad or a touchscreen with shortcuts to actions you use a lot on your computer. With this two way traffic you combine the power of both your iPhone and your computer, instead of just having a loose phone dangling on the edge of your desk. In our opinion the synergy of the phone and computer would be more complete if voice calls would also be routed to your computers speakers and built-in microphone so the control of your iPhone on the computer would be complete (are you listening Apple? A MacBook with built-in iPhone dock that would also share the 3G connection perhaps?). Granted, an external USB keyboard wont make much if youre sitting behind a laptop. And the advertised mobile use of carrying around a full sized qwerty-keyboard for your iPhone in the train is actually close to absurd. But we can certainly think of situations where this $100,- gadget fits perfectly. More detailed pictures below.

Futuristic concept cameras

The last two weeks a few future camera concepts (products that are designed as inspiration but havent yet found their way onto the production line) have shown up on the internet with some interesting and noticeable features. The two concepts we show here both make use of a smart detachable body and lens system and this seems to make a lot of sense! Technology changes rapidly and electronics are made smaller and faster every year but the way light acts cant be changed explaining why a lot of the lens technology we use now has been around since the earliest photo cameras. To take high quality pictures you will probably (for now at least) always need a large lens. These concepts, though very futuristic, clearly didnt forget about the importance of a proper lens surface but managed to combine that with the high tech interfaces and connectivity we are growing used to.

The WVIL concept camera by Artefact combines a (wireless) lens with a body that has all the feature of a smartphone. The LEICA i9 for iPhone4 goes a step further on that and actually uses your smartphone as part of the body. Things like editing and sharing can then be done instantly from the device itself. The pictures and videos below (including some of the typical Apple product video music all concept videos now seem to be using) tell the whole story.

Future predictions of touchscreens (video)

As we just reported on a future prediction from an artist in 1900 its now time for a future prediction of today. Corning, the company behind the popular upcoming Gorilla Glass for touchscreens, made this video in which they show off their future predictions for touchscreens. It makes for a mind-boggling display of hidden interactive screens in nearly all surfaces. A very realistic scenario in our vision, although actual touch interaction will probably become more redundant with highly intelligent predictions. Nobody wants to get up to touch the TV to change a channel or spend 10 minutes touching screens in the car before leaving. It might simply know theres a 98% chance youll want to drive to the office, or to the meeting you have in your calendar. We also expect sophisticated voice recognition to become one of the major ways of interaction.

Its an inspiring video that make you wonder about things like these. Great fun to watch! We cant wait!

Oven with full color touch screen

The Gorenje iChef+ is more than just an oven. Even though touch screens on kitchen appliances are nothing new and the iChef does pretty much the same as an oven 50 years ago could do, the way you do it just got a bit more interesting with this huge colored touch screen. It has 65 oven meals pre-programmed so you can simply start the appropriate oven program by touching the picture of that meal and has 150 open slots for you to save your own programs in.

The year 2000 as predicted in 1900

Its always been mans fascination to wonder what the future will look like. And now that we live in an age where never before there has been so much and rapid change in everyday life through invention and technology, this age old question makes you wonder even more.

As did the French creator of these posters in 1910. These were his predictions of the year 2000, made more than a hundred years ago. The main themes of the posters seem to be robotics and personal flight. It looks like a dangerous world to us: robot arms with big shaving blades, battery powered roller blades, policemen with gatling guns
