Intro to CMYK & Printing – for Print

Intro to CMYK & Printing – for Print- Karen Kavett describes CMYK and the basics of color theory for print work and how to prepare your files for production.

The CMYK color model, also known as process color, was first popularized at the turn of the 20th century. After extensive experimentation in the 1800’s, it was found that cyan, magenta, and yellow inks provided the largest possible set of unique colors in printed media. Black ink, (the k stands forkey) was added to the mix because it could not be accurately reproduced using the other three inks.

How does CMYK Color Work?
The CMYK color model is based off of the fact that surfaces appear to be certain colors because of the wavelengths of light they absorb and reflect. For example, things that appear to be red will only reflect red light. Objects that appear to be white will reflect all wavelengths of light, and objects that appear black absorb all wavelengths (which is why you should avoid wearing black in the summer to stay cool).

As a subtractive color system, CMYK color takes advantage of this phenomenon by depositing inks on a surface in order to selectively absorb certain colors of light. The light that isn’t absorbed by the inks is reflected into an observer’s eye, which results in them seeing the intended color.

HALFTONES
As shown in this example from LCI Paper, different colors of inks are printed onto a surface in dots and then layered in order to produce the desired color. This is called ‘half-toning’, and conserves ink while creating the appearance of a solid color provided the dots are small enough.

The size and spacing of dots can be altered to produce the overall visible color. The dots are also printed at angles to each other in order to avoid creating unintentional patterns which could be visible to the user (called Moiré patterns).

How Do You Use CMYK Color?
Unlike RGB color, which is used in screens and digital display technology, CMYK color was created for printed materials. Where RGB color has three channels for red, green, and blue, CMYK color has four channels for cyan, magenta, yellow, and key (black). Each of these channels is measured from 0% to 100%, and will tell the printer the relative density of each ink that is required.

CMYK VS. RGB IN PHOTOSHOP
Some programs (like Adobe Photoshop) will automatically display in RGB color spaces, and so it may be necessary to change the color profile of the image if you are intending on using it in print.

It is also important to be aware that the RGB color space contains more colors than the CMYK color space. This means that some special care will need to be taken when converting files from RGB to CMYK, as some of the colors can appear dulled.

K=100 BLACK VS. “TRUE” BLACK
Although it might seem counter-intuitive, using 100% black ink in process color (CMYK: 0 . 0 . 0 . 100) is not the darkest black possible in the color space. So-called “Rich Black” or “Photoshop Black” (CMYK: 75 . 68 . 67 . 90) is a much deeper black because it absorbs more light.

The reason that “Photoshop Black” isn’t often used in print is that the sheer amount of ink can rip lower quality paper like newsprint. In addition, for details like text, using too much ink can create a muddy appearance, which will affect readability.

For large areas that will be colored black, small amounts of other inks can be added to K = 100% to create a rich black without oversaturating the paper with ink. Some examples include:

How a free photo editor compares to the industry standard

Adobe Photoshop has long stood at the top of the list of professional image editing software — but it’s always been attached to a pro-level price. While Photoshop is much friendlier on your wallet than it was years ago thanks to a $10 subscription plan, the industry standard editor will never be as affordable as GIMP, an open source photo editor that encompasses several of Photoshop’s heavy hitting tools.

GIMP, which stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program, is an open source, free Photoshop alternative. Besides the free price point, the open source design means that the program welcomes code adjustments, along with being available for Mac, Windows, and Linux. But how does it stack up to a program so popular that it’s been turned into a verb? Here’s what photo editors need to know when trying to decide between GIMP and Photoshop.

While GIMP may be free, Photoshop is no longer the $700 program it once was. With the advent of the Creative Cloud, Adobe moved all of its major programs over to a subscription model, which means you’ll have to continue paying for it for as long as you want to use it, and those monthly fees will add up over time. Fortunately, if you’re just in the market for Photoshop, the $10 Photography Plan is pretty easy to stomach. What’s more, the subscription model ensures you’re always running the latest version of the app.

The Photography Plan also includes Lightroom, a non-destructive RAW photo editor and organizer that integrates well with Photoshop; Adobe Camera RAW for converting and opening RAW images in Photoshop; and 20 gigabytes of cloud storage, to which you can add more for an additional fee. All of this adds up to an undeniably good value at $10 per month — but that still comes out to a more than free.

GIMP doesn’t offer as complete a package as the Creative Cloud Photography Plan. It doesn’t include cloud storage nor its own RAW processor and organizer, though you can opt for an open source Lightroom competitor like RawTherapee. GIMP also needs a plug-in to convert and open RAW files, which, fortunately, is also free.

FEATURES

Photoshop has long been an industry standard for photo editing as well as graphic design. GIMP, like other open source programs, tends to have fewer advanced features, since there’s no company motivated by a profit to continually improve it. But free doesn’t mean bad, and for some types of users, GIMP has all of the necessary essentials without needless bloat. It also takes up less space on your hard drive.

As an open source program, GIMP is easy to customize. Even if you don’t have the programming knowledge to adjust the open source code, GIMP has several plugins to expand features, while the user interface can also be easily customized. The program is lightweight, so besides taking up less room on the computer, it’s also compatible with older computers and budget devices that may not have the RAM that Photoshop requires.

Tool-wise, GIMP can handle the same basic and mid-level edits, and in some cases, even the more advance edits that Photoshop can. If you just need to crop and resize a photo, GIMP can easily do the job. While not quite as advanced as Photoshop, GIMP isn’t just bare bones photo editing, either. It still offers layers, curves, filters, and many more tools that go well beyond basic.

But as the industry standard with a dedicated company making frequent updates, Photoshop is certainly the more powerful program. For example, GIMP has just one healing brush tool while Photoshop has four. GIMP also doesn’t handle CMYK color, doesn’t allow for non-destructive photo editing using adjustment layers, and requires plug-ins for some features that are built in to Photoshop. Adobe also innovates at a blazing pace, and started integrating artificial intelligence into Photoshop several years ago with tools like Face-Aware Liquify, which automatically detects features of a person’s face and lets you resize the eyes, mouth, and nose without having to make any manual selections.

That’s not to say GIMP never sees updates — in fact, the software usually sees some sort of minor or major update every few months, and plans for both non-destructive editing and CMYK support are in progress.

Descriptive, keyphrase-focused headline high on the homepage

The headline on the top of the homepage (and every page) is either descriptive or not. If not, the visitor may not be able to answer their first question: “Am I in the right place?”

It’s also an opportunity to use a target keyphrase and indicate relevance. But a lot of marketers write something clever or vague instead. But clear is better than clever.

Rather than write a fancy, but vague headline, write something descriptive. Make sure that you explain what the company does high up on the page, above the fold.

Wait, the fold is still a thing?

Yes, there is a fold. For every visit on every screen, there is a viewable area. At the bottom is the famous fold. To see anything below this line, that visitor must scroll.

Why and if this matters in web design is a hotly debated topic. Here are two of the best arguments: “There is no fold!“ vs “The fold still matters.”

Of course, there are thousands of screen sizes, ranging from tiny to huge. This website was viewed on 958 different sized screens in the last month. So some designers say the fold is no longer relevant.

But here’s the bottom line (get it?) There is still a fold for every visit and still an average fold for all visits. Tools like Hotjar show it clearly as a line in the scroll heatmap, for desktop/laptop, mobile and tablet. So put your value proposition, that 8-word version of what you do, high on the page, above the fold.

Make it a tall page. Answer all your visitors’ questions.

More pixels means more space to answer questions, address objections and add supportive evidence. If the visitor doesn’t find an answer to an important question, they can simply keep moving down the page. Once they are satisfied, they’ll simply stop reading.

You would never cut someone off during a sales meeting and stop answering their questions, would you? That’s all a short page does; it stops answering questions.

Here’s where the famous study from Crazy Egg comes in. They surveyed their audience, discovered their top questions and concerns, and built a tall page that addresses everything.

The page was 20x longer. The conversion rate went up by 30%.

Ask yourself questions such as…

Have you developed products and services that meet a real need of your actual customers?
Have you surveyed your customers (or just talked to them) to discover how they feel about your products and what you can improve?
Can you make further improvements to your products to get them to the point where your customers feel they cannot live without them?
Have you priced your products low enough to make them affordable to your target customers?
And have you priced them high enough that you’re making sufficient profit on each sale to make it worthwhile?
Do you have special pricing strategies (coupons, discounts, sales, etc.) in place to encourage people to buy your products consistently and repeatedly?
Have you made your products easily accessible to customers?
Are they available through multiple channels (e.g. in your store, on your website, through third-party distributors)?
Are they always in stock when your customers want to buy them?
Do you have a promotional plan in place?
Are you promoting consistently and continually?
Are you testing your promotion to find what works best?
Are you reinforcing successful promotion and dropping/tweaking ineffective promotion?
Are you investing enough into promotion to get your sales to the level you need in order to be viable?

These and other questions will help you evaluate your strengths as well as areas where you can improve. From there, you can build a strategic plan for taking your marketing to the next level.

WordPress 2018 Review

“Is WordPress the best way to build a website? We get asked this a lot, so this review will address that question. I’ll discuss my personal experiences as both a WordPress newbie and a more experienced website builder!”

I’ve been using WordPress along with other website builders since before 2012. This website is built on WordPress and we can’t see ourselves moving it to another website builder anytime soon.

Why? Well, WordPress is what we need at this stage of our website’s lifespan.

Simply put, the pros outweigh the cons.

This short phrase saved me a lot of headaches when I was choosing a website builder as a newbie.

See, I like technology. If there’s a newer version of my smartphone with more features, I will definitely pay a couple of hundred dollars for what I feel is a better version even though I have absolutely no use for these new features!

This is why the above phrase is so useful to me.

It keeps me from making silly mistakes like choosing a website builder that is more than I can handle and full of features I will never use.

How Do We Rate WordPress Itself?

It’s no secret that we are huge WordPress fans at HostingAdvice.com, but below we go into the nitty gritty details of what makes WordPress great and when there are alternatives to consider. We break down our overall review by categories, covering ease of use, support, cost, and more.

1. Ease of Use: 4.6/5.0

The WordPress platform is incredibly powerful and will allow you to manipulate any aspect of your site — however, its functionality comes with a learning curve. What is CMYK?

CMYK is a scheme for combining primary pigments. The C stands for cyan (aqua), M stands for magenta (pink), Y for yellow, and K for Key. The key color in today’s printing world is black but it has not always been. During the early days of printing, the colors used for Key have been brown, blue, or black — whichever was the cheapest ink to acquire at any given time.

The CMYK pigment model works like an “upside-down”version of the RGB (red, green, and blue) color model. Many paint and draw programs can make use of either the RGB or the CMYK model. The RGB scheme is used mainly for computer displays, while the CMYK model is used for printed color illustrations (hard copy).

There is a fundamental difference between color and pigment. Color represents energy radiated by a luminous object such as a cathode ray tube (CRT) or a light-emitting diode (LED). The primary colors are red (R), green (G), and blue(B). When you see a red area on a CRT, it looks red because it radiates a large amount of light in the red portion of the electromagnetic radiation spectrum (around 750 nanometers), and much less at other wavelength. Pigments, as opposed to colors, represent energy that is not absorbed by a substance such as ink or paint. The primary pigments are cyan (C), magenta (M), and yellow (Y). Sometimes black (K) is also considered a primary pigment, although black can be obtained by combining pure cyan, magenta, and yellow in equal and large amounts. When you see yellow ink on a page, it looks yellow because it absorbs most energy at all visible wavelengths except in the yellow portion of the spectrum (around 600 nanometers), where most of the energy is reflected.

The primary pigments and the primary colors are mathematically related. Any two pure radiant primary colors (R, G, or B), when combined,produce radiation having the appearance of one of the pure non-black primary pigments (C, M, or Y). Any two pure non-black primary pigments, when mixed, produce a substance having the appearance of one of the pure primary colors. These relationships are depicted in the illustration.

The primary colors RGB, combined at 100-percent brilliance,produce white. The primary pigments CMY, combined at maximum concentration,produce black. Shades of gray result from the equal (but not maximum) brilliance of R,G, and B, or from equal (but not maximum) concentrations of C, M, and Y. If you have a paint or draw program such as Corel DRAW! that employs both the RGB and the CMYK schemes, you can investigate these relationships by filling in regions with solid colors using one mode, and examining the equivalent in the other mode. After a while you will develop an intuitive sense of how these schemes work, how they resemble each other, and how they differ.

In general, the RGB mode should be used when preparing graphics intended mainly for viewing on computer displays. The CMYK mode should be used when creating illustrations for print media.
