How to Create Secure Passwords For Social Networking Sites

If you've been involved with social media then you've heard about the hacks on Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter. User accounts have been broken into and used to spread spam or links to sites carrying viruses or other malware.
Time and again, the reports try to drill into your brain that you need to make your password secure. But I've yet to hear anyone report on just what a secure password is!
In order to help correct that, I'm going to provide you a shortened version of what I provide my clients and students about creating secure passwords.

To appreciate how easy it is to hack a social networking account, you have to look at your profile the way a hacker does. Hackers know that most people use passwords that are easy for them to remember. That means that your profile contains much of the information a hacker can use to guess your password.
For example, many people will use the name of their dog, spouse, or child and their birth date to create a password. So, if you have all your family listed on your profile, along with the pet chinchilla and your birth date, that's the first thing any hacker will try.
So if you have a pooch named Rex, and your birthday is 07-17, a password of rex0717 is probably a bad idea. Similarly, your spouse, John with your anniversary date - john0422 - is also easily hacked. I think you got the picture.
These skills are called social engineering techniques and have been around since the dawn of hacking. But that's not the only tools these folks have at their disposal. There are freely distributed hacking tools programmed to run through the entire dictionary, along with combining numbers and characters to also break your password.
So, any use of a full word contained in the dictionary is also off limits for any part of a password.
By now I'm sure you're wondering how to create a password without using words, right? It's actually easier than you think!
Take some phrase or concept that's very meaningful to you and create a password from it.
Let's say that your favorite movie is the Wizard of Oz. You could use the phrase, "Follow the yellow brick road" to create the password. Or, Lions and tigers and bears, Oh my!
Using the yellow brick road phrase, you take the first letter of each word in the phrase to start the password. So you would use the f in follow, the t in the, y from yellow, b from the brick, and r from road. Now you can come up with a multiple combination of this by also switching the case on this phrase. Some of them might be as follows:

Now, you need to add something to the end or the beginning to make it even harder to hack because the longer the password is, the longer it takes for someone to process the multiple variations on it.
So, using the Oz from the title of the movie, you can substitute the o in Oz for a zero or number. Then your password may look like this: FtyBR0z.
To add even more length to it - thus making it even harder to guess, you could add: FtyBR0zL&t&b0m!
Did you guess the ending? Lions & tigers & bears with the zero representing the o in Oh my! And of course the m and exclamation point. But a tilde would do just fine also, as in: FtyBR0zL&t&b0m~
You see from that example that there are no words being used that are included in the dictionary, and no identifying information that could be gleaned from your social profile. Unless of course, you have as I do, Wizard of Oz listed as one of your favorite movies on your profile! Needless to say, this not my password!
Also, a word of caution. While this may keep you from getting your account hacked now, it doesn't mean that someone won't find a way to break your code and get in. So my advice to you is, don't use the same password for all your social networking sites. You can use the same theme, but switch things around so that in the event one account does get hacked, you don't give the hacker instant access to all your accounts.
A final word about social engineering techniques. Don't trust just anyone with your passwords or the phrase you use to create them. You just never know who you might be sharing that information with. And do not use a phrase you are recognized with.
A friend of mine is known for his tag line, "Show me the money." That would be the first phrase I'd guess if I was hacking his account. So make sure it's something known and meaningful only to you.

Apple premieres new Michael Jackson song

Apple is exclusively premiering a new Michael Jackson song on Ping.
The new tune, from Jackson's posthumous record, Michael, represents Apple's latest attempt to kickstart Ping, which has got off to something of a slow start since launch back in September.
The new tune, called 'Much Too Soon' follows previous singles, 'Hold My Hand', and 'Breaking News' from earlier last month.
Christmas with Michael
The new long-player, Michael will be released on 14 December, just in time for Christmas.
Fans have questioned whether the last single 'Breaking News' was in fact actually sung by Jackson, causing Epic Records to release a statement confirming the authenticity of the ditty.

The announcement about 'Much Too Soon' premiering on Ping was made on Jackson's official site.
Whether or not the release of the single exclusive on Ping for the first week of release will drive many more users to Apple's fledgling social network for music remains to be seen.

Colossus adds new Venom and Window chassis

PC tower chassis maker BitFenix is introducing two new variants to its Colossus line of PC towers, Colossus Venom and Colossus Window.
It's a response to the emails they received after demoing a Colossus with green lighting at Gamescon 2010.
"After releasing Colossus, BitFenix fans from around the world offered their own personal suggestions on some new and interesting modifications for the full tower, and Colossus Venom and Colossus Window are the results of that feedback," says David Jarlestedt, BitFenix Product Manager.
The Venom lets users switch between red and evil green lighting for the tower, while keeping all the traditional Colossus features, including a pair of SuperSpeed 3.0 USB ports, a storage compartment, and the company's proprietary SofTouch coating.

Watch It Work
The other new tower is the Colossus Window. This doesn't have the LEDs on the side, replacing it instead with a window panel that lets users see their hardware in the chassis glowing red, blue or green – the last being the Venom Window edition – thanks to a pair of colour-matched LED fans.
There's a simplified control panel and four USB 2.0 ports, audio jacks and an eSATA port.
The Venom retails for 139 Euros, the Windows for 159 Euros (c.£133). Although there's no guarantee that the new styling will increase your score, you will intimidate and impress your opponents.

Corsair brings out new Force Series SSDs

Gaming hardware manufacturer Corsair has added a pair of new models to its Force Series of solid state drives (SSD).
The F90 and F180 have, respectively, densities of 90GB and 180GB.
With read speeds up to 285MB.sec and write speeds that can reach 275MB/sec, as well as a 4K random write throughput going up to 50,000 IOPs, these are industrial strength SSDs, and are meant to have enterprise-level performance, even though they're aimed squarely at the gaming market.
The new additions fill out in the company's Force line.

Google Doodles are the name given to the small images used occasionally to replace the traditional Google logo on its search page.

Real Life Experience - Server Hacked!

Firewalls are the your first line of security defence against viruses, hackers, and trojans. It is extremely important to ensure is configured properly in order for this security tool to be effective. I would like to share with you my hands-on Real-life firewall experience:
As an IT Security Engineer, I received a high priority call from a large corporate company and the last message was Server was hacked ! When I got there, I found out that one of the main server has a user and directory created that no one in the company can identify.

There was a high-end firewall installed but guess what, the was only 1 rule set. Allow All (meaning as good as no firewall). Period. Naturally, we (security company) came in and did a technical security assessment (audit). Further, recommended and implemented the appropriate server hardening, firewall reconfiguration, IPS (Intrusion Prevention System), Anti-Virus, user security training and this company had became one of the long lasting major customer.
So the lesson learned is to install a firewall and get the rules working for you. It will do you good.
The firewall acts as the first line of defence against any Internet attacks. A typical firewall interfacing with 3 types of network. e.g. Internet (External), Internal Network and DMZ (Dimilitarized Zone).
Some of the features of a firewall which should be configured includes the following:
Able to be configured to be invisible to external parties. Do not allow "pings".
Administrator password must be at least 8 alphanumeric characters and held tightly by the person that you trust.
Tight Packet filter rules ( A must) They act by inspecting the "network packets" traveling between the firewall. It is sort of like a postoffice between the Internet and your office servers/PC. If a packet matches the packet filter's rules that state it is fine to pass through, the packet filter will pass the network packets to your Internal PC/Servers. If it does not match, the packet filter will drop the packet, or reject it (discard it, and send "error responses" to the source). Bottom line: ensure rules are configured properly.
Sync Protection : Ensure this protection is enable to protect against Sync Attack.
Typically a connection between PC and Server is establish when "3 way handshake is established". The sender PC will send a SYNC flag, then the receiving Server will send back a SYNC ACK flag. After that the sender PCwill send a SYNC ACK flag. Once these are all done, connection is established. The PC and Server can go about their business of connecting application e.g. FTP.
Now an intruder will keep on sending the server with SYNC flags. The server do not know what to do with it and will just hold them. Denial of Service attack will be established when the server cannot handle the load and deny any legitimate connections to the server.
IPS
Nowadays, a firewall is not adequate to protect the network. It should be complement with IPS which has updated signatures make access control decisions based on application content, rather than IP address or ports as traditional firewalls had done.
