I just love this ambient album by japanese artist Hiroshi Yoshimura. The album was commissioned by home builder Misawa Homes Institute of Research and Development to be played in their newly built living spaces:

Originally released as an album in January 1986, Surround was recorded by Yoshimura as a commission from home builder Misawa Homes, intended to function as an “amenity” designed to enhance the company’s newly built living spaces. A pioneer in the field of environmental music, Yoshimura’s previous works included Music For Nine Post Cards (1982), originally produced to be played back inside a museum space, and designing sound environments for public spaces and subway systems. Surround was recorded almost concurrently with the acclaimed and popular GREEN (1986); the two albums are described by Hiroyoshi Shiokawa in his liner notes as being Yoshimura’s yin and yang.

Note: The following review is of a leadership book that I requested from Harvard Business Review Press, which they kindly sent me.

”Leadership on the Line: Staying Alive through the Dangers of Leading” by Ronald A. Heifetz and Marty Linksy is a book that urges you to seize opportunities for leadership on an ongoing basis, in your everyday life and working environment.

More written like a novel and a page-turner than a "dry and technical" manual, the book discusses the beauty of leadership and its importance, but at the same time highlights some of the common pitfalls that a leader or manager should look out for, especially in times of great change.

Below are some of the many key points that the book covers of which I took to heart.

1. Look out for clues in your working environment

With lots of different case studies from the area of business and politics, the authors describe how to look for clues in your working environment to get a clear sense of when to push forward or when to pull back. These are clues that otherwise might go unnoticed and get missed entirely or simply being overlooked by a leader that finds himself/herself in a demanding work situation.

2. Observe your closest allies and take note of the signals

To me, the book paints the picture of a work place that is like a living organism, an organization when experiencing too much pressure and strain in one area, risks of breaking apart in a whole different part. Things can quickly take a turn for the worse when someone who's taking on a leadership position doesn't notice the worrisome signals coming from their closest allies due to the pressure they themselves are experiencing in conjunction with the work of change.

Here, the authors do a great job of shedding the light on something that otherwise can result in major negative consequences for someone who's in the forefront.

3. How to reduce the risk of getting emotionally injured

Another important part the authors bring to surface, is how to avoid getting emotionally injured when leading. Just by changing how you, as a leader or manager, interpret the reactions and feedback you’re receiving from your team and colleagues can save you lots of unnecessary emotional pain – here Ronald A. Heifetz and Marty Linksy provide a great deal of information on how to do that, drawing from their wealth of experiences working for themselves and with others.

4. Leadership isn't a one-person operation

An aspect in regard to leadership the book covers is that leading isn’t a one-person operation. Instead, it is of significant importance to seek out and have allies, but also to seek out and work closely together with your opposition. For leaders, these are crucial steps for navigating through the sometimes harsh waters they find themselves in.

5. Delegate – put the work where it belongs

A good trait of a leader, the authors tell us, is knowing when to step back and delegate in some work related situations and let those involved take full ownership – to put the work where it belongs so as to avoid the recurrence of the issue and instead get sustainable results and achieve progress.

In closing – a great investment

The book makes for lots of reflection besides gifting you with valuable tools for making your work as a leader a more fulfilling one.

”Leadership on the Line: Staying Alive through the Dangers of Leading” is well worth your time and investment if leadership is something you’re already involved with or aspiring to explore.

On the official Open Championship site you can still enjoy some great content like one of my favorite documentary series "Chronicles of a Champion Golfer" and Open Championship recap videos from 1970 until now, among other video materials.

You can now listen to the full soundtrack for the film "Blade Runner 2049" by Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch on Spotify.

The album sounds very mystic and powerful with that 80's synth vibe, very similar to Vangelis original soundtrack for the first "Blade Runner" film. And that was one of the reasons why director Denis Villeneuve decided to go with Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch instead of Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson. From IndieWire:

"The thing I will say is that making movies is a laboratory. It.s an artistic process. You cannot plan things. Jóhann Jóhannsson is one of my favorite composers alive today. He's a very strong artist," Villeneuve told Al Arabiya English. "But the movie needed something different, and I needed to go back to something closer to Vangelis. Jóhan and I decided that I will need to go in another direction — that's what I will say. I hope I have the chance to work with him again because I think he’s really a fantastic composer."

Very often, I find myself having many tabs opened at the same time in Chrome when working with the blog. I sometimes choose to save those URLs in a text document for future reference, a task that can be somewhat time-consuming.

Thanks to the work of developer Vincent Paré, a Chrome extension called Copy All Urls has been created, which lets you copy all opened tabs/URLs into the clipboard. You can then paste those URLs into a text document or to the browser to create new tabs.

Font retailer FontShop's website The 100 Best Typefaces of All Time lists like the site name says, 100 high-quality licensable typefaces that have been selected by a jury of international experts.

FontShop's selection differs from other typeface charts because it is both subjective and as objective as possible. By incorporating its own sales figures and various bestseller lists from the past ten years (see "Scoring Criteria" below), FontShop ensured that the users of the nominated typefaces also had input into the selection. The subjective element was provided by an independent jury of international experts. On the basis of the "commercial" pre-selection they were able to eliminate fonts, nominate others, reorder, veto and up- or downgrade. After several rounds of this, everyone had agreed on a list of the top 100 typefaces.

The documentary "Gringo: The Dangerous Life of John McAfee" (2016) directed by Nanette Burstein focuses on computer programmer and businessman John McAfee's, the inventor of the famous antivirus program McAfee VirusScan, life in Belize where he has been accused of serious crime.

Mysteries abound in the life of John McAfee. He made millions creating antivirus software, then reinvented himself as a yogi, a proponent of herbal medicine, and a serial entrepreneur. He was known for his charm and generosity. Then his life took another turn. He moved from the US to Belize and built a heavily armed compound in the jungle, like a modern day Heart of Darkness. McAfee never shied away from media attention and boasted of his libertine lifestyle, maintaining a harem of young women. In 2012 his neighbour in Belize, an American named Gregory Faull, was found murdered by a gunshot. Sought for questioning by local authorities, McAfee fled to Guatemala, then returned to the US where he pursued the Libertarian Party nomination for President in 2016.

Over the years, journalists have told pieces of McAfee's story (including the infamous Vice report accidentally revealing his secret location). Here the Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Nanette Burstein delivers a deep investigation that sheds new light on the shadows around the 70-year-old mogul. McAfee refuses her requests for an interview, but continues a strange cat-and-mouse email correspondence for months.

Recently, I watched the movie "Cold in July" (2014) directed by Jim Mickle, in which Michael C. Hall, Sam Shepard and Don Johnson acted brilliantly.

The Return of the Austrian 'Kamarg' Backpack

Backpack manufacturer Kamarg was founded in 1949 in Graz, Austria and produced quality backpacks aimed towards Austrian adventurers. In the 70's, the production was shut down due to competition from Asia that could offer much cheaper products.

But, in 2014, Kamarg was re-established and the iconic backpack went back into production.

It was in August 2013 when Franz, one of our founders, came across a Kamarg backpack when cleaning out the attic of his parents' house in Austria. The beige Kamarg he found there in a wooden box was used by his father to go to school and then work. It was produced in 1953 and still fully functionable. There was tear but nothing was broken. He washed it and started using it in the coming months and people really liked the simple and timeless design.

It was this backpack that got us thinking. We started discussing all the plastic backpacks we had in our lives, some of them from major brands. Most of them lasted 24 months at best as Zipper started to fail, plastic an straps broke out or fabric tore. Put on top of each other they would be a pile of waste now. In contrast to this, here was a product that has lasted 61 years and could still be used. It seems like Kamargs were truly built to last. They were not something to throw away when they were broken or ran out of fashion. The idea stuck with us for months. In June 2014 we decided to look into bringing Kamarg back.

The retail price for a Kamarg backpack will be 120 EUR, but there is an introductory price of 80 EUR for the first three hundred rucksacks.

Inc. Magazine's profile of Tumblr founder David Karp in their series "The Way I Work" is a refreshing read in so many ways. Things might have changed for Karp since this article is from 2011, but nevertheless is it filled with things that you can incorporate in your own work life.

I'm on Tumblr all day. I don't follow a ton of people, but I post and reblog stuff I really care about. I love my blog. I get most of my news from my Tumblr dashboard. I used to be a 24-hour news consumer, but so much of the reporting is bad these days. I find tech reporting incredibly tedious and dull. And I've kind of given up on reading anything that anyone writes about Tumblr. It's often inaccurate.

There's kind of a hive mentality at the office. We all break for lunch between 12 and 1. Usually, one person gets up, and the rest follow. We all cram into the elevator. Once we hit the street, we break off into two or three groups and go get food to bring back to the office. Then, we all eat together.

[…]

Sleep is precious to me. I'm very disappointed if I don't go to bed before midnight. We have a rule: no laptops in the bedroom. Being on computers all the time makes me feel gross.
