We are really loving up Coolspring – it’s very quaint with lots of kind folks who practice old fashioned manners.  And you should see some of the gardens around here!  You know it makes me happy to see people growing so much of their own food.

Coolspring certainly is a nice, quiet, inspiring place.

And who knows… maybe once I get out from under all these moving boxes, perhaps I can infuse a little Coolspring love into the blog here.  I’ll try to focus on all the positive things we learn along the way and over-look some little things that make me wonder, like the General Store that gives it’s wooden floors a yearly treatment of motor oil.  Hmm… gonna just have to step away from that one for now.

Some chicks in Salem, Virginia are starting to say What the Cluck? at the possibility of not being allowed to stay in their home.  The local zoning authorities are trying to kick them out of their coop – permanently.  It’s hard to think that in America (you know, land of the free?) you may not be allowed the right to chicken on your own property.

Back yard chickens are so great!  They are excellent pets, a source of fresh food and terrific pest control.  Small flocks of chickens should be allowed in Salem, VA and EVERY WHERE.    Please sign this very important petition to show your support. Salem will be a better place for allowing the hens to stay.

A market story… A few years back, Dreg and Sadie from All Natural Me spent a summer vending at the local farmers market. What a great experience spending an entire day baking fresh bread to wake up super early the next morning to try to sell wheat buns in the rain.  Sadie remembers all the nice folks who supported the local farmers and how lucky she was to have so much fresh produce to pick from.  Dreg remembers having to eat up all the soggy buns that didn’t find homes.  It was a good summer for every one.

We love our farmers market because all our friends grow there!

Genetically Modified Wheat is a Threat to Farmers

We are seeing massive problems with the genetic contamination from neighboring farms with GM corn, soybeans and canola. Most of the soybean supply in the U.S. is already contaminated with genetically modified seeds. Many organic and conventional corn farmers are losing markets because their crops are testing positive for GM traits. Many experts have said that it is next to impossible to find non-GM canola in Canada because of this genetic trespass. Wheat pollen is even more pervasive than that of canola.

All these new GM crops are patented, which prohibits farmers from planting the seeds in subsequent years. This means that they must purchase the patented seed every year from the seed company. Monsanto sells 90% of all GM seeds in use today. This corporation is currently taking legal action against hundreds of farmers for saving seed, but many of these farmers have not planted Monsanto’s seed; their crops have GM traits only because of contamination from GM pollen. Percy Schmeiser, a Canadian canola grower, was sued by Monsanto and lost his case over this very same issue. His case is currently under appeal before the Supreme Court of Canada.

Genetically Modified Wheat is a Threat to the Economy

GM wheat is a mortal threat to the U.S. wheat market. It is estimated that the loss of markets for GM corn, soy and canola has reached over 300 million dollars per year because the European Union will not purchase GM crops. The U.S. is the world’s leading wheat exporter. Many foreign companies have stated that they will not purchase GM wheat or any wheat if GM wheat is grown in the region. Korea is the fifth largest purchaser of U.S. wheat exports. The Korean Flour Mills Industrial Association has stated that they want GM-free certification of any hard red spring wheat they purchase. The price of spring wheat could drop by one-third if a GM variety is introduced commercially into Montana or North Dakota, according to agricultural economist Dr. Robert Wisner of Iowa State University. This will spell doom for North American wheat growers even if they decide to not plant GM wheat themselves.

GM crops are not required to go through any type of independent safety peer review to determine if they are safe for either human consumption or the environment.

We must oppose this theft of a great common resource and protect the sovereignty of independent farmers and our right to safe food.

Little Ayden from All Natural Me has some exciting news!

Earlier this year, he and his homeschool buddies entered the PA Cleanways Litter Hawk Award Program with their local service project.  And guess what!?!  Their green goodness won the Community Outreach category for their age group.

Whoo hoo!

Ayden and his friends are always cleaning up our highly littered neighborhood and we are so very proud of them for putting trash in its place.

Way to go Litter Hawks!!

Once upon a time, the music world created these things called cassette tapes.  They held recorded music from bands with big hair.  When a pretty girl from a really cool all natural me website gathered a lot of them, she decided to re-purpose them instead of sending them to the landfill.  She decided to transform them into upcycled business card holders.

One day when traveling in Butler, Pennsylvania, she used her green charm and found a home for one cassette holder at a healing center called Simple Balance.  Sadie was happy to leave a lifetime supply of the Naturally Us Comic business cards with the helpful guy who gave her a tour of the place, but she was very sad to leave without having a massage or acupuncture session.  So she buzzed over to Lisa’s Natural Path for a Natural Health Alliance meet up and pigged out on pita chips and hummus.  As luck would have it, Sadie was eating hummus made from magic chickpeas that gave her extra finesse and charm.  She wooed the crowd with all her silly jokes and a smile returned to Sadie’s face when she was able to set up her cards there too!

And as legend has it, any eco-friendly storefront that hosts an All Natural Me upcycled business card holder is blessed with good fortune, fame and lives happily ever after.
