Deciphering Michael Jackson

A couple of days ago I received a question on Twitter:

Can you tell me what he says?

with the following video attached from Michael Jackson's "They Don't Really Care About Us" music video.

For this song, Michael Jackson made two separate music videos. The first video was shot in Brazil in a favela of Rio de Janeiro, while the second video was shot in a real prison. The prison version is the version in where some sign language seems to be 'hidden' at the end (minute 4:47), which you can see in the video above.

I have been searching on the internet to see if there are any official translations, or at least interpreters with a translation, but I could not find anything else but a lot of guessing, including the question if it was sign language at all, assuming it would be American Sign Language.

Therefore, if anyone has an idea, let us know!! Was Michael Jackson signing in American Sign Language is his prison version of the "They Don't Really Care About Us" music video, and if so what?

Dream to Screen Competition

The Dream to Screen competition is a competition for short films in the UK, Ireland and Channel Islands. There have been five final finalists to this competition that have been given a £2000 production budget and thousands of pounds worth of industry standard equipment, plus access to an experienced film mentor, to make a film based on the theme of 'Inspiration'.

To pick the overall winner the public may vote until October 28th. On this page you can see the short films of all five finalists, including the one from William Horsefield, a deaf 19 year old filmmaker, who made a short film called "Welcome to the Deaf World". His short film is about Charlie, who is being picked on for being deaf. The film shows that deaf people are not dumb. According to William:

"If I win, it would be the most amazing experience to see my film on the big screen. I hope that it will also raise deaf awareness within the industry and inspire more young filmmakers with the disability to enter such competitions and to grab every opportunity that comes their way."

ASL Fundraising Campaign for "Let It Go"

We all know Jules Dameron, she is an outstanding deaf director, She has directed music videos, like "Feel Again" by One Republic, "Somebody That I Used To Know" by Gotye, and "Let's Mambo" by Sean Forbes ft. Marlee Matlin and she has also directed films, like the short film "It's My Role!".

Now, Jules is preparing to create a new music video with the song "Let It Go" from Disney's Frozen. The song has had a great impact on many people and there are many many covers in many different languages. The team to create this ASL version of Frozen consists of ten deaf people. Two people will be interpreting the Frozen ASL song, and which two people have they chosen? No other than Amber Zion and Jason Listman!!

Amber Zion interpreted the beautiful song "Rolling in the Deep" by Adele (directed by Jules Dameron) and she performed the ASL version of the American National Anthem for the Superbowl XLVIII. Jason Listman has created many music videos, like "Firework" by Katy Perry, but he also can be seen in the very interesting video "Deaf Culture and Music Videos". Now, put these two amazing ASL performers together with Jules Dameron as a director, and this video should be over the top great.

However, creating and producing high-quality music videos is costly, therefore the team has started a fundraising campaign. Not only do they explain why this song is chosen, also the whole team is introduced. Check it out and donate!

The issue for Deaf people to integrate in the hearing society is very difficult due to the use of sign language. For the hearing society sign language is still for many people an aid for deaf people to communicate instead of an actual complete and natural language. It is even more difficult to graps that sign language are independent and are not linked to the spoken language of a country.

In order to bridge the gap between hearing and deaf people, more and more technology is being developed to have an instant translation of sign language to spoken language and vice versa. This would make communication between deaf and hearing people easier, without having to teach every single person sign language (which I think would be great and so much more useful for hearing people than they realise) and without the deaf person needing to adapt completely to the hearing person.

We have seen a glove that converts sign language to text and subtitles while you speak, but there has been more. Now there is another new thing Google Gesture. Google Gesture is simply said Google Translate for sign language. Have a look at the video and see what you think of this!

A Traffic Sign for Deaf and HOH People

In the Netherlands not only the famous red and white cane for blind people exists, but also a sign for deaf and hard of hearing (HoH) people, the "S|H" sign. The sign is used for bikes. SH stands for "Slechthorend" which means hard of hearing in Dutch.

However, in contrast to the red and white cane, the HOH sign is hardly known to people. Moreover, people in general think it is the two letter code of a country, just no one knows which country. Obviously, if no one knows what the sign means, it doesn't add to traffic safety, which is the whole reason behind the sign exists.

That's why a Dutch hard of hearing girl, Bianca van der Horst, made sure a new sign was designed, a more visual and this international sign. On her (Dutch) webpage, 100procentslechthorend (100% hard of hearing), the sign can be ordered. If more than 200 orders are made, the sign will be produced.

Not only does she want the sign to be sold, but also to be known nationally (and maybe even internationally). Therefore, she is asking everyone with this sign on their bike to take a picture of it and share it via social media. Also she hopes the sign can be added to the theory exam for cars, scooters and mopeds. Especially in the Netherlands this is important as both scooters and mopeds sometimes share the bike lane with the bikes.

The other day I ran into this happy song and interpretation. The song is interpreted by Ren and Keely. They are two deaf teenagers who love signing songs. They have been featured on the blog before with the song "Let It Go" by Idina Menzel (fromthe movie "Frozen").

This time they have interpreted the song "Wings" by Little Mix and they have made a great video. The energy just radiates from the screen. The song is interpreted into ASL, but it also has caption throughout the song and the lyrics are also written down in the comment section of the video.

The Signglasses Project

Today I would like to introduce to you the signglasses project. In general, when Deaf people want to go to the cinema for example, they are left searching for movies at a cinema that offers closed captions. We've talked about possible solutions for this before, glasses with build-in subtitles. We definitely applaud this research and hope it will become used by the public soon. Especially as it is not only useful for Deaf people, but also for people that for example don't speak English (yet), but they are in the States want to go to the movies.

However, we all know that reading subtitles is not always the biggest joy. At the planetarium the problem is even bigger. They can have an interpreter, but to be able to see the constellation of stars projected on the cealing, lights need to be turned off, this which makes it harder to see the sign language interpreter properly. To solve this, a group of researchers from the Brigham Young University, have come up with a solution by using Google Glasses (and other types of glasses).

The project is called the "Signglasses" project and the software they make can project a sign language interpreter onto the glass. This video shows how that looks like. The video is in ASL, but there is also a voice-over and closed captions for the part where they explain their project directly to the viewer.

There are several reasons why you would consider yourself Deaf, that is, being part of the Deaf community. Of course if you are Deaf yourself or you have a Deaf relative, it makes sense. However, there are other reasons to be interested in the Signing and/or Deaf community and wanting to be part of it. In this series we share their stories. Today's it's Samantha's story.

Hi! My name is Samantha, I'm 15 years old and I'm a sophomore (10th grade) in high school. I have a stutter.

It has always been hard for me being the only stutter in my school and not even being able to take a language class. When I was in 7th grade I had to take Spanish, and that was the worst thing ever. My teacher would take off points if I stuttered in Spanish.

After all of that I thought I would never learn a foreign language ever again. But after my freshmen year in high school, I found out that my school was going to have a sign language class that next year. You don't know how happy I was finally being able to take a language class in which I don't have to talk. I just love learning about ASL and the culture and just everything about it. From just taking the class it makes me want to be a sign language interpreter when I graduate. ASL has helped me with so many things like that I'm able to sign to the deaf man that goes to my church.

Deaf Culture and the Police

Sadly, every once in a while you see a newspaper article about a deaf person in a brutal assault by the police, because he or she was not 'listening' to the demands of the police. Obviously, the police needs training on how to interact with deaf people, in the meantime, this video aims for deaf people to know their rights.

To that end, Marlee Matlin, together with the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) and advocacy group HEARD (Helping Educate to Advance the Rights of the Deaf), have created an ASL video to ensure Deaf people know their rights in law enforcement.

Today the ASL interpretation is done by Azora Telford. We have seen her before in an ASL music video from Jules Dameron interpreting a Gotye song. This video has been produced by a team of Deaf campers and their staff from the Deaf Camp Film at Camp Mark Seven. Deaf Camp Film is an annual camp for 13-16 year olds aspiring to become filmmakers.

Short film: Summer Beats

I love short films. And here is a short film Summer Beats about a Deaf teenager. However, due to funding the film cannot be made yet. The film is a project of a group of filmmakers who wish to make this short film in order to finish their filmmaking degree. As such they have placed their short film idea on the Indiegogo website to raise funding of $1,000 to make the film.

The story is about a Deaf teenager from Ecuador who undergoes a Cochlear Implant surgery and finds it hard to fit in the hearing world. A topic that is very important to the Deaf world. This teenager then falls in love with a French girl living in Ecuador who has also a hard time fitting in. The inspiration for the film came from the director whose brother is Deaf.

I Am Deaf And I Like It

Like with many non-standard things someone can have, be, feel or like, you seem to have to explain yourself. Because not being normal, that is, like everyone else, needs an explanation (how dare you be different?). I have had and seen these conversations so many times, whether it's because you're not a native, an identical twin, a redhead, or because you are the only one with a green car, explain yourself!

And of course with deafness it is no different. Or maybe even worse, people know less about it and assume even more! A Deaf person you can get very tired of explaining the same things all over again. And I must say, as a hearing person I get tired of it sometimes too! So yes, I would like te (re-)educate the world about it, but that simply will not happen overnight. So for now, you accept it, you take a deep breath, and explain yourself again (great patience training!).

Well, the other day I ran into an(other) article from a Deaf woman with the title I'm Deaf and I'm Totally Cool With It, Thanks. She answers the most asked questions Deaf people deal with on a daily basis. It is a very nice read. Proper explanations and you can feel the irritation and the relief of getting it out.

Frozen is one of the newest animation films from Disney and of course songs are a part of it. This is the song "Let It Go" and now also the little ones can follow the lyrics in their own language. The videos is made and the song is interpreted by Ren and Keely, two deaf teenagers who love signing songs, and it is no surprise as their hobbies include thetra, performing, and writing. Check out their "About" section on YouTube to find out more about them.

This video was published in January when, for them at least, it was snowing. And also the video has been dedicated to a little girl called Ruby for who this is her favorite song. Enjoy the song and the weather wherever you are! Have a nice week.

Pinned down hands in front of his tummy, her face absurdly close to his little smooch. Brutesk appearance with a strong, clear shrill voice that could break those sensitive eardrums. The echo of it bouncing back into the space around them. “You will not use your hands. You will use your mouth”. He tries to get away from her, so much betrayal in his eyes. He tries to pull free from her personal space which has completely invaded and taken over the brittle aura he has. He wriggles until he has one free hand, and mimic what she is doing. His hand scoots over to his mouth and points at it. Like he wants to tell her, 'I know where my mouth is. Right here. Can I go now? 'But he can’t. Again, she takes a firm grip on both his hands in front of his belly. She wants him to pronounce a simple word, yet she does not understand that he physically is not able to do as she pleases. She gives to much auditive information at once, and since her stance is so demanding, probably all he got was the word mouth. He gives it his best but I see how small it makes him.

Can you imagine happening this to your toddler, who depends on sign language as primary communication. In where you leave your child in the care of those you precisely have chosen, trust and depend on making your kid grow. It happened to us. It happened to my child.

The anger I feel will just not settle in. It has been a couple of months now, since this incident. Of course I jumped in as soon as I realized what was going on. I told her never, ever to do this again. I tried to explain that taking away the possibility to sign – for gods sake, how long was this already going on? - for a young child that has limited options in his communication could lead to, let’s say selective mutism. By taking away his candor in communication. How dares she! For how long already had she been telling my son that the matter of communication was not acceptable for her? How long she’d been telling him not to use any singing anymore, because she thought he could do better than this? She not only deprived him of his confidence, but also took away his strength, the ability to grow and to communicate. She pushed him further away from who he is. Is it that difficult to consult us first?

If they sign, let them. Don’t you ever try to heal my kid again. The only one who will get to heal him truly will be himself, if there would have been a matter of healing or not. My kid is perfect the way he is. Because he is surrounded by love and understanding. Because he gets to learn on his own pace. Don’t you ever take that away from him again. Ever.

Handjes voor zijn buikje vastgehouden, haar gezicht absurd dicht op zijn kleine lieve snoetje. Bruteske houding en met een sterke, scherpe stem dat regelrecht zijn gevoelige oortjes in dondert. De woordenecho die van zijn gezichtje afstuitert, de ruimte om hun heen in. “Jij mag niet met je handjes praten, maar met je mond”. Hij probeert bij haar weg te lopen, ik zie zo veel verraad in zijn ogen. Hij probeert los te komen uit haar ‘personal space’, welke compleet zijn fragile aura heeft overgenomen. Hij wriemelt en wiebelt totdat hij één handje los heeft, en spiegelt wat zij doet. Hij maakt een rondje om zijn mond en wijst ernaar, alsof hij wil zeggen “Ik weet waar mijn mond is. Hier. Mag ik nu gaan?” Maar dat mag niet. Ze pakt zijn handje vast en duwt die bij zijn andere handje, voor zijn buik. Ze wil dat hij een simpel woordje uitspreekt, maar begrijpt niet dat hij fysiek gezien hier nog niet toe in staat is. Ze geeft teveel auditieve informatie in één keer, en aangezien haar houding zo dwingend is, heeft hij waarschijnlijk enkel het woord ‘mond’ gehoord én begrepen. Hij doet zijn best, maar ik zie hoe klein ze hem maakt.

Kun je je voorstellen dat dit gebeurd met jou peuter, die afhankelijk is van ondersteunende gebaren als primaire communicatie? In en situatie waarbij je je kind achterlaat in de zorg van anderen, die je met zoveel aandacht hebt uitgekozen. Het overkwam ons. Het overkwam mijn kind.

De woede die ik voel wil nog steeds niet tot rust komen. Het is een paar maanden geleden, nu. Natuurlijk sprong ik er gelijk tussen toen ik door had wat er gebeurde. Ik zei haar dit nooit, maar dan ook nooit meer te doen. Dat we hiermee zijn spraak niet bevorderde, maar een actie als deze – hoe lang was dit in godsnaam al gaande?- bijvoorbeeld selectief mutisme in de hand zou kunnen werken. Zijn onbevangenheid in de communicatie wegnemen, Hoe durft ze! Hoe lang vertelde ze mijn kind al dat hij iets deed wat zij niet acceptabel vond. Dat hij helemaal geen gebaren meer mocht gebruiken omdat zij vond dat hij ‘beter’ kon? Ze ontnam hem niet alleen zijn zelfvertrouwen maar ook zijn kracht en zijn vermogen zich verstaanbaar te maken. Het duwde hem verder weg van de richting wie hij was, in plaats dat hij dicht bij zichzelf mocht blijven. Was het te moeilijk eerst met ons in gesprek te gaan?

Als hij gebaard, laat hem. Waag het nog eens mijn kind te ‘genezen’. De enige die dat kan is hijzelf, als er al genezen moet worden. Door hem tijd te geven en te leren. En omdat hij omringt is door liefde en begrip. Waag het niet nog een keer om hem dat te ontnemen. Nooit.

Teaching a Sign Language

Today I ran into a video on YouTube from Rob Nielson. Rob is a Deaf and an American Sign Language (ASL) teacher. He is talking about ASL students that start teaching other people ASL, while they are still learning themselves.

Of course learning a language doesn't mean you can teach it. Yes, you may be able to show some words/signs or phrases. But that is not teaching a language, and it certainly doesn't make you qualified. I personally am a bi-lingual from birth, and I run into the same issue where people think I can teach them one of my languages. Even though I am fluent at both languages, a language is very complex, and also the process of teaching is not something you learn in one day. Teaching a language is not just about translating, and I couldn't even do that professionally, that's a whole different area of study!

In the case of sign language, people some how still can't believe it is a complete and natural language. Many people ask me if I am an interpreter or why I don't become one. Mostly they seem to think I can just go ahead and apply for an interpreting job. So I most definitely understand Rob's concern. People watching these videos might think that sign language is a simply language that you can learn but watching some YouTube videos.

I just hope these videos work as a lowering of threshold for people to choose to learn sign language. They see them, like it, and decide to go for an official course. However, it should at least be very clearly stated in the video that the person is not teaching (or at least not certified), but trying to expand the knowledge of sign language or something similar.

Short Film: It's My Role!

Jules Dameron is a American Deaf award-winning film director. She studied Television/Cinema at Gallaudet University and Film Production at the University of Southern California. She has directed the TV series Møkkakaffe (Bad Coffee), many short films and also music videos.

Some of her music videos she has directed are "Somebody I used to know by Gotye" and "Let's Mambo" by Sean Forbes. She has many more videos and many of then will follow on this blog as they are beautiful.

Today one of her short films "It's My Role!". The film is about two deaf actresses that are competing for the same role. While getting ready to audition they have to deal with the hearing people around them. Enjoy the film!

"You Were My Everything" by Prinz-D

Time for some rap music! This music video is from Prinz-D The First Deaf Rapper.

According to Prinz's bio, his speech impediment was gonna make it very difficult to become a successful hip hop artist. However, that didn't stop him, he has trained with speech pathologists and by now he has already created albums and videos. This video is from the song "You Were My Everything" and even though not everything is signed, ASL is used in the video and all text is subtitled making the video accessible to everyone.

1st International Conference on Teaching Deaf Learners

Yesterday the very first edition of the international conference Teaching Deaf Learners in Amsterdam has started. The main question of this conference is

What do deaf and hard-of-hearing pupils need in class?

During three days --19, 20, and 21 March 2014-- different speakers from different countries will inspire. One of the main problems with mainstreaming is that many teachers still think that a deaf pupil is simply a student that cannot hear. Of course, when you look at equality that is the case, but as a teacher there should be a deeper understanding of the differences in deaf, hard-of-hearing and hearing children.

Watch the conference's page onrganized by the Dutch group Kentalis --a national organization in the Netherlands providing diagnostic, care and educational services to people for whom the ability to hear or communicate is not a matter of course-- for news and updates.

There is also the book on this topic Teaching Deaf Learners: Psychological and Developmental Foundations. This book explores how deaf children and adolescents learn and the conditions that support their academic achievement (or not).

Today's song is from the American rock band Imagine Dragons. The song is part of their debut album Night Visions as the opening track. We have had another song interpreted into ASL from Imagine Dragons. You can find it here: It's Time.

The song is interpreted by Melissa Wight and it's the first time she is on this blog. I couldn't find much information about her on the blog, however she seems to have at least one other ASL music video, so who knows, there might be more to come! She also did her best in creating an entire video, not just her signing, and I think it works very well with the song.

Pup language

After letting our beloved dog go last august, we felt the peace and quiet we had not felt for a long time. He had displayed neurotic behavior for a while when he finally passed away from illness.
But after a small amount of time we really started to miss that extra little beating heart in our house.

After searching, waiting list for puppies and finally finding the right little one for our household we finally got to pick up our Whippet, Goldie!

And after discussing vocal language and sign language, it now is time to introduce the...

Happy weekend all!

In eerste instantie voelde we rust nadat we van onze lieve hond afscheid hadden genomen, afgelopen augustus. Hij was behoorlijk neurotisch en ziek op het eind.
Maar na een poosje begonnen we dat extra kloppende hartje in ons huis toch wel te missen.

Na een zoektocht via internet, via wachtlijsten voor pups en al het andere indenkbare vonden we dan eindelijk onze lieve Whippetpup Goldie!

Dus na ruim een jaar lang gesproken taal en gebarentaal te hebben bediscussieerd is het nu tijd voor de volgende introductie...
