The ACC still has a shot at as many as 6 NCAA teams, but that will depend on how Miami and NC State finish the season. Right now only one of them is in.

In my ranking system, any RPI top (100) win is a good win and any RPI top (50) obviously worth more. Any losses outside the RPI top (100) is considered a bad loss, and outside the RPI (150) are even more damaging. I’m not counting future results only if I think a team would make the NCAA’s if selections were made the day of the post.

My RPI rankings come from, CBSSportsline.com.

Locks

(4) Duke (25-4) (12-2) Projected Seed 1

Last 10 – (9-1)

Good Wins – (58) Belmont, * (2) Michigan St., (66) Davidson, * (16) Michigan, * (6) Kansas, * (29) Colorado St., (49) Washington, * (39) Virginia, *(6) UNC, (94) Maryland, (67) NC State, (90) Tennessee, (93) Penn, (100) Virginia Tech, (100) Virginia Tech, (22) Florida State

Bad Losses -None

Notes – 15 top 100 wins, 3 top 6 RPI wins and you’re telling me Duke is not a number 1 seed ESPN’s Joe Lunardi? You can’t be serious.

(5) North Carolina (25-4) (12-2) Projected Seed 2

Last 10 – (9-1)

Good Wins – * (2) Michigan St., * (26) Wisconsin, * (34) Long Beach St., (54) Texas, (55) Miami, (67) NC State, * (39) Virginia, (55) Miami, (67) NC State, (100) Virginia Tech, * (39) Virginia

Bad Losses – None

Notes – By this time next week we’ll know if UNC is a legit contender for a number 1 seed. If they beat Duke Saturday and they will be right in the mix going into the ACCT.

(22) Florida State (19-9) (10-4) Projected Seed 6

Last 10 – (7-3)

Good Wins – (63) UCF, (81) UMASS, (90) Loyola Marymount, * (5) North Carolina, (94) Maryland, * (4) Duke, * (39) Virginia , (55) Miami, (67) NC State, (100) Virginia Tech, (100) Virginia Tech

Bas Losses – (144) Clemson, * (235) Boston College

Notes – Florida State did not have a good week losing at home to Duke then getting routed at Miami by 16. The Noles need to get things righted before they end up a double digit seed.

(39) Virginia (21-7) (8-6) Projected Seed 8

Last 10 – (6-4)

Good Wins – (65) Drexel, * (16) Michigan, (52) Oregon, (68) LSU, (55) Miami, (67) NC State, (84) George Mason, (100) Virginia Tech

Bad Losses – (144) Clemson

Notes – Virginia has been safely in for awhile, but they haven’t done much in recent weeks to improve their seeding.

Bubble But In

(55) Miami (17-10) (8-6) Projected Seed 11

Last 10 – (6-4)

Good Wins – (81) UMASS, (100) Virginia Tech, * (4) Duke, * (22) Florida State

Bad Losses – (102) Maryland

Notes – Put them in the Big Dance after the Canes beat Florida State Sunday without Reggie Johnson. Their work is not done yet though. The Canes want to be at least 9-7 heading into the ACC tournament. This week is a game at NC State then at home against Boston College.

Bubble But Out

(67) NC State (18-11) (7-7)

Last 10 – (4-6)

Good Wins – (51) Texas, (97) Princeton, (55) Miami

Bad Losses – * (176) Georgia Tech, (144) Clemson, (106) Stanford

Notes – Due to such a weak bubble nationally, if NC State can beat Miami and win at Virginia Tech this week, they may be able to get back on the good side of the bubble. Right now they are out…

Only if they win the ACC Tournament

(100) Virginia Tech (15-14) (4-10)

Last 10 – (3-7)

Good Wins – * (39) Virginia

Bad Losses – (102) Maryland * (161) Wake Forest, * (235) Boston College

Notes – 2 more losses this past week by a total of 7 points. What else is new for Virginia Tech? They had Duke on the ropes and let them go.

(102) Maryland (16-12) (6-8)

Last 10 – (4-6)

Good Wins – (83) Colorado, (41) Notre Dame, (55) Miami, (100) Virginia Tech

Bad Losses – * (176) Georgia Tech

Notes – Forget the NCAAs, Maryland is playing themselves out of the NIT after losing to Georgia Tech Saturday.

(161) Wake Forest (13-15) (4-10)

Last 10 – (3-7)

Good Wins – (99) Loyola, MD, (95) Yale

Bad Losses – (126) Richmond, * (171) Wofford, * (250) Arizona St. , (144) Clemson, (144) Clemson, (102) Maryland

Notes – Looks who’s won 2 of their last 3, Break out the Deacs!

(144) Clemson (15-13) (7-7)

Last 10 – (6-4)

Good Wins – * (22) Florida State, (39) Virginia, (67) NC State

Bad Losses – (110) Charleston, * (177) Coastal Carolina, * (185) South Carolina, (136) UTEP, * (194) Hawaii, * (235) Boston College, (102) Maryland

Notes – Clemson is playing well recently. If they even would have went 4-3 in their 7 bad losses, they would be on the NCAA bubble.

(176) Georgia Tech (10-18) (3-11)

Last 10 – (2-8)

Good Wins – (70) VCU, (56) NC State

Bad Losses – * (205) Tulane, * (220) Fordham, (144) Clemson, (123) Mercer, * (161) Wake Forest, (102) Maryland, (144) Clemson

Notes – Brian Gregory still has his guys playing hard as the Jackets pulled off a 63-61 upset win over Maryland this past week.

(235) Boston College (8-20) (3-11)

Last 10 – (1-9)

Good Wins – *(19) Florida State

Bad Losses – * (158) Providence, * (161) Wake Forest, *(163) Holy Cross, (133) Penn St, *(186) Boston U, *(251) Rhode Island, * (176) Georgia Tech, (102) Maryland, * (161) Wake Forest

Notes – Rematch of the ACC Pillow fight with Georgia Tech is Wednesday night!

The ACC’s top 3 teams appear set. Duke and North Carolina at 12-2 in the ACC have clinched ACC tournament first round BYEs. Florida St barring a major collapse seems to have locked up 3rd position. The 4th position currently belongs to Virginia at 8-6, followed by Miami at 7-6. They play Florida State Sunday. After that it is NC State at 7-7 and Clemson at 7-7. Wait a minute is this the same Clemson team that less than 3 weeks ago was 11-12 (3-6)?

This was a forgotten team in the ACC that had lost games to UTEP, Coastal Carolina, and Hawaii. A 20 point win over Florida State was seen more as function of a struggling Seminole team in January than of anything to do with Clemson. Now, since a 62-64 home loss to Maryland, Clemson has won 4 of their last 5 games including a win over Virginia. Saturday Clemson won an OT thriller over NC State 72-69 and now they are 1 game out of 4th place in the ACC stands.

I saw a couple of tweets across my @TalkinACCSports timeline that asked where did Clemson come from all of a sudden? At 15-13 and an RPI in the 140s, Clemson isn’t going to the NCAAs without winning the ACCT, but they are making some late noise. This is a balanced scoring team that has 4 players Andre Young, Tanner Smith, Devin Booker and Milton Jennings that average 9 points or more, but it’s the ACC’s 2nd ranked defense that has fueled Clemson’s recent good play. The Tigers have allowed only 1 opponent since the middle of January more than 70 points in a game.

Could the Tigers really end up in 4th place and earn a first round ACCT Bye? They have a shot at it. The Tigers lost their top two scorers from 2011. A 4th place finish would be remarkable and should warrant Brad Brownell some ACC COY consideration. This seemed unfathomable a few weeks ago. The resurgent Tigers have quietly put together one of the better turnarounds in the ACC this year.

We’ve been doing our ACC Bubble watch each Sunday, but it’s probably time to take a look at the rest of the country’s bubble teams. What they do will directly affect in particular Miami’s and NC State’s bubble status. We are going to consider Maryland as well, because with an 8-8 finish to the ACC season and deep run (probably) the finals they have slimmest of at-large shots.

I’ve held all year that 11 ACC total wins (regular season + ACCT) should put an ACC team into the NCAAs. You see the ACC bubble team’s records below and RPI, so you know what they have to do starting this weekend.

#49 Miami (16-10) (7-6)

#60 NC State (18-10) (7-6)

#89 Maryland (16-11) (6-7)

Now if none of the ACC teams, reach said 11 wins, it’s time to do some rest of the country team watching. We are going to pull our other bubble teams from CBS’s Sportsline latest Bracketology.

Last four in: Arizona, Washington, Iowa St. and Texas

Last four out: Minnesota, Oregon, VCU and Miami.

Let’s look at the resumes.

#68 Arizona (20-9) (11-5)

Pros – Um somebody has to come from the Pac 12.

Cons – Best win is over #36 California, really?

Thoughts – This is a terribly weak resume. If their RPI is falls into the 70s they won’t get in.

#52 Washington (19-8) (12-3)

Pro – See Arizona, but with a sweep of the Wildcats.

Cons – Best win is over #49 Oregon, really? These Pac 12 teams sound awfully similar.

Thoughts – The Huskies will probably get into the Big Dance barring a big collapse. They don’t have any non-conference wins to speak of, but they did play Duke and Marquette tough.

#42 Iowa State (20-8) (10-5)

Pros – Wins over Kansas and Kansas St.

Cons – There is a loss to Drake

Thoughts – Cyclones look pretty good. I think they are safely in at this point.

#58 Texas (17-11) (7-8)

Pros – Win over #13 Temple

Cons – Under .500 in the Big 12.

Thoughts – NC State has a win over Texas, which would benefit the Wolfpack. I think Texas looks more like an NIT team.

#76 Minnesota (17-11) (5-10)

Pros – Win over Indiana

Cons – a 5-10 Big 10 conference record.

Thoughts – Gimme a break Minnesota shouldn’t be anywhere near the bubble right now.

#50 Oregon (19-8) (10-5)

Pros – 2-1 over Arizona and Washington

Cons – Not a single top 50 win.

Thoughts – After looking over the Pac 12′s teams, this league doesn’t deserve more than 3 bids. Sorry Arizona.

#70 VCU (24-6) (14-3)

Pros – 9-1 in their last 10 games. Last year’s NCAA run should help keep VCU on the radar screen.

Cons – Very ugly loss to #185 Georgia Tech, NC State has one of those too. An ACC team giving a bad loss to a Colonial Athletic team, how times have changed.

Thoughts – If they don’t win their conference tournament, VCU can’t lose more than 1 game.

How I’d rank these teams in terms of who’s in and who’s out for the final 4 spots with our bubble ACC teams included.

In

1. Iowa State

2. Washington

3. Oregon

4. Miami

Out

5. NC State

6. Arizona

7. Texas

8. VCU

Not Even Close

9. Maryland

10. Minnesota

The Duke Blue Devils might have been the most underrated 23-4 #4 ranked team in recent memory. Listen to the college basketball analysts and they heaped deserved praise on Kentucky and Syracuse. No one argues that, but after those two you got into the next group of teams that could get to the final 4 and win the national title.

Kansas, Michigan St, and North Carolina were the teams most often mentioned. Despite Duke’s record and wins over the previously mentioned Kansas, Michigan St, and North Carolina, most felt the Blue Devil’s apparent lack of athleticism and some shaky defensive numbers should keep them from being named one of the country’s elite teams. You can throw me in that group too. I didn’t think Duke could reach the Final 4 without a really forgiving tournament draw. I was wrong. This is one of the best teams in college basketball and they are getting better each week.

Duke went to Florida State Thursday night with first place in the ACC on the line. It wasn’t that many weeks ago that the Noles visited Durham and defeated the Blue Devils. It was considered the biggest basketball game ever to be played at Florida State. It was a sellout Seminole crowd, national TV, home court final score – Duke 74 Florida St. 66. This wasn’t a case of the Seminoles playing all that poorly either. Was it their best, no… but Duke got up early and led Florida State the entire game. Each Seminole run was answered by a timely 3 point shot. That was a very good FSU team that Duke beat. It was the Blue Devils nation leading 5th RPI top 20 win.

A few weeks ago I considered Duke’s frontline a liability. They couldn’t handle athletic physical frontlines, but the Plumlees and Ryan Kelly have elevated their games to at least hold their own in such matchups. Remember when everyone thought Brian Zoubek was the weak link on Duke’s 2010 National Title Team? He turned into one of the blue collar glue guys that was vital to that team’s success. Of course we have to talk about Austin Rivers. Rivers is becoming one of the most feared shooters in the ACC. Guards Andre Dawkins and Seth Curry are also big time contributors.

From their comeback wins against UNC and NC State to the victory at Florida State, this is a poised team that rarely gets rattled. If they win the ACC regular season and ACC tournament you can’t convince this isn’t a number 1 seed. ESPN’s Andy Katz suggested that Michigan St. and Kansas were more deserving if they all win out. Strange… I think Duke beat both of those teams. I’m done doubting this team. Can you find some holes still? yea probably but outside of Kentucky and Syracuse everybody has some issue. It’s time to start believing in these Duke Blue Devils as a legit Final 4 threat

So the BCS higher ups are meeting this week to discuss the future of BCS. You can read the latest developments at CBSSportsline.com. A couple of things I’m reading make me think that the BCS is close to getting this college football championship thing right. Word is they are looking at the possibility of a college football playoff of no more than 4 teams beginning in 2014. If you read my blog you know I have always been a proponent of the +1 team playoff. We are so close.

My fear is somehow the BCS think tank will still screw this up. Let me make it simple for them right now. Vote the +1 or playoff tomorrow. That will give plenty of time to iron out the details and logistics of the new system. You know I’ll even clear that up for the BCS to speed up the process.

Keep the current system, and 1 vs 2 play a week later. This year the national championship game was on January 9. Go ahead play the big bowl games Sugar, Fiesta, Rose, and Orange Bowl on January 1 and January 2. That would make New Year’s Day football huge again. You’d give fans again the opportunity to attend the games during what is still mostly vacation time for them. Then have the national title game the second Monday of January that way you are not conflict with the NFL playoffs.

Why am I against the 8 or 16 team playoff? Let me answer with this – LSU… the Tigers played a very credible schedule and went undefeated in doing so. I wouldn’t be that high on a BCS 8th ranked 2 loss Kansas St team or 3 loss BCS 16th ranked Georgia team leap frogging LSU with a couple of good weeks of football.

You argue that it works at the FCS level, and I say I’m not enamored with it there either. Though I wouldn’t change the NFL playoffs, I’m not really that sure the NY Giants were really pro-football’s best team or just the hottest.

So here you go BCS the opportunity is there get this +1 system done.

There’s so much going on starting with some NC State fans who are steaming mad at ACC official Karl Hess for ejecting a couple of NC State legends Saturday against Florida State. StateFansNation wrote a piece titled A Call to Arms that encourages Pack fans to let their feelings be known. For the segment of NC State fans ready to go SEC, let me ask you this.

You think you’re going to get a fair shake in Tuscaloosa, Alabama or Athens, Georgia? If you want to stick to the ACC, make John Swofford hand you a championship trophy, but yea I’d be mad too if I were a NC State fan.

Duke is readying for a huge game with Florida State Thursday. DukeSportsBlog says the Blue Devils are eyeing this rematch.

We haven’t checked in with Georgia Tech blog FromtheRumble Seat in awhile. They are reviewing the Yellow Jackets recent signing class. Their most recent article focuses on Tyler Stargel with links to several other players.

ACCBlogger looks at the Bubble and Bracket situation for the ACC.

TestudoTimes defends Maryland coach Randy Edsall’s decision to block former QB Danny O’Brien from attending Vanderbilt and join former Maryland OC James Franklin. Not sure I agree with it, but certainly some valid points were made.

Virginia blog asks What’s changed since the Cavaliers and in state rival Virginia Tech last played? I know one thing that better change. Virginia doesn’t want to lose to the Hokies again, or that NCAA bubble inches a little bit closer.

For the first time in a couple of weeks the number of ACC teams I’ve had in the NCAA tournament has dropped from 6 to 5 teams. Who dropped out? Take a look below.

Locks

(4) Duke (23-4) (10-2) Projected Seed 1

Last 10 – (8-2)

Good Wins – (69) Belmont, * (2) Michigan St., (76) Davidson, * (14) Michigan, * (5) Kansas, * (30) Colorado St., (53) Washington, * (42) Virginia, (94) Maryland, *(6) UNC, (94) Maryland, (56) NC State

Bad Losses -None

Notes – A 20 point comeback at home against NC State keeps Duke in line for a number 1 seed. They also were pretty sharp in a route of Boston College.

(6) North Carolina (23-4) (10-2) Projected Seed 2

Last 10 – (8-2)

Good Wins – * (2) Michigan St., * (23) Wisconsin, * (35) Long Beach St., * (51) Texas, * (46) Miami, (56) NC State, (94) Maryland, * (42) Virginia, *(46) Miami

Bad Losses – None

Notes – Can UNC still get a number 1 seed? With road games at NC State, UVA, and Duke plus the ACC Tournament, it can still be done.

(20) Florida State (19-7) (10-2) Projected Seed 5

Last 10 – (9-1)

Good Wins – (53) UCF, (89) UMASS, (90) Loyola Marymount, * (6) North Carolina, (94) Maryland, * (4) Duke, * (42) Virginia , *(46) Miami, (56) NC State

Bas Losses – * (162) Clemson, (226) Boston College

Notes – FSU was very impressive dismantling NC State in Raleigh. The Noles are good enough to get to the Final 4 or Elite 8, but inconsistent enough to be a first round NCAA exit.

(42) Virginia (20-6) (7-5) Projected Seed 7

Last 10 – (6-4)

Good Wins – (74) Drexel, * (14) Michigan, (61) Oregon, (63) LSU, * (46) Miami, (56) NC State, (84) George Mason, (94) Maryland

Bad Losses – (107) TCU, (103) Virginia Tech, * (162) Clemson

Notes – A disappointing loss at Clemson was followed by 71-44 win against Maryland that saw the Cavs only give up 13 2nd half points. UVA is not out of the woods yet though. They have to play at a Virginia Tech team that they lost to already and against UNC this week.

Bubble But In

(46) Miami (16-9) (7-5) Projected Seed 12

Last 10 – (7-5)

Good Wins – (89) UMASS, (94) Maryland, * (4) Duke

Bad Losses – None

Notes – Miami is in the big dance today, but barely. They couldn’t get another signature win when they lost to UNC at home this past week. They have to play at Maryland then get FSU at home this week. Win both and Miami is a 7-8 seed, lose both and they are out.

Bubble But Out

(56) NC State (18-9) (7-5)

Last 10 – (6-4)

Good Wins – (51) Texas, (94) Maryland, (46) Miami

Bad Losses – * (172) Georgia Tech

Notes – NC State’s week could not have went worse. They blew a 20 point lead at Duke, then had a lifeless home performance against Florida State in a 14 point loss. To add insult to injury referee Karl Hess threw two NC State legends Chris Corchiani and Tom Gugliotta out of the game against FSU. Hey Karl I wouldn’t get near Raleigh anytime soon.

Only if they win the ACC Tournament

(94) Maryland (15-11) (5-7)

Last 10 – (3-7)

Good Wins – (73) Colorado, (37) Notre Dame

Bad Losses – None

Notes – Maryland has run out of time to make realistic run at the NCAA Tournament. A 27 point loss at Virginia was the final nail in the coffin.

(103) Virginia Tech (15-12) (4-8)

Last 10 – (4-6)

Good Wins – (42) Virginia

Bad Losses – * (159) Wake Forest, * (226) Boston College

Notes – Very quietly Virginia Tech has won 3 of their last 5, and that includes a last second win over Georgia Tech on Saturday.

(159) Wake Forest (12-15) (3-10)

Last 10 – (2-8)

Good Wins – (99) Loyola, MD

Bad Losses – (143) Richmond, * (187) Wofford, * (236) Arizona St. , * (162) Clemson, * (162) Clemson

Notes – Wake Forest avoided the ACC’s cellar by beating Georgia Tech on Tuesday. I’m still not sold on Jeff Bzdelik as head coach, not at all.

(162) Clemson (13-13) (5-7)

Last 10 – (4-6)

Good Wins – * (19) Florida State, (42) Virginia

Notes – A good goal for Clemson is get to the NIT. They still have a shot at it, if they can finish over .500 for the season.

(172) Georgia Tech (9-17) (2-10)

Last 10 – (1-9)

Good Wins – (70) VCU, (56) NC State

Bad Losses – * (199) Tulane, * (228) Fordham, * (162) Clemson, (113) Mercer, (103) Virginia tech, * (159) Wake Forest

Notes – The Jackets have lost 7 games by 7 points or less. The Jackets just don’t know how to win games right now, and why can’t Glen Rice Jr. stay out of trouble?

(226) Boston College (8-19) (3-9)

Last 10 – (1-9)

Notes – If BC can finish the ACC season not in last place, I would consider the season a success for them. They have a 1 game lead on Georgia Tech.

Coming off a loss Tuesday night at Clemson, Virginia was looking a little shaky. Despite a 19-6 record they had fallen to 6-5 in the ACC with a dangerous Maryland team coming to Charlottesville. Frankly if the Cavs had lost Saturday that would be the NCAA bubble off in the horizon, but as he’s done all year Mike Scott carried Virginia. In this game Scott had 25 points and 7 rebounds in the impressive 71-44 victory over Maryland. The win keeps the Cavs in solid position for the NCAAs and a first round BYE in the ACC tournament.

Without Mike Scott this isn’t possible for Virginia. Without Mike Scott, UVA is probably 15-11 and not 20-6. Is there any doubt Mike Scott is your ACC player of the year? On twitter @HokieGuru, @KilroyFSU, and myself discussed this. We all agreed this is your ACC POY and probably deserves more credit than he’s getting. I don’t know what stronger endorsement of Scott you need than a Virginia Tech Hokie fan saying that.

Statistically speaking Mike Scott is third in the ACC scoring at 16.9 points a game. He’s in the top 10 in rebounding, and leads the ACC in FG percentage. Oh he’s also one of the ACC’s leading FT shooters at 81%, but Scott’s value is far more than that. Virginia is not a deep team. They haven’t been all year, but when starting center Assane Sene went down with what is now looking like a season ending ankle injury and Joe Harris suffered a broken bone in his non shooting hand you began to wonder if Virginia’s once promising season might slip away. Mike Scott wouldn’t let that happen and has literally carried the Cavaliers.

I know North Carolina’s Tyler Zeller is getting some mention as ACC POY. He’s having a great season, but he also has Harrison Barnes and John Henson there to free him up. Scott doesn’t have that luxury. He’s the defensive focus of every Virginia opponent, every game, and he still puts up the numbers he puts up. He gets no mention as National Player of the Year. He should be in the conversation. That’s a shame he’s not. Don’t agree with me then comment away, but if you don’t think he’s the ACC POY, I’d really like to know why. You can even do a fan vote for the ACC’s POY at the ACC’s official site and make your feelings known there.

Joe DiMaggio’s Major League Record hitting streak: 56 games

Orel Hershiser Major League Record: 59 consecutive scoreless innings pitched

Connecticut Women’s Basketball Team winning streak: 90 Games

UCLA Men’s Basketball Team winning streak: 88 Games

Butler’s Darnell Archery NCAA Consecutive Free Throw’s Made: 85

Yea that took me a fair amount of effort to find 5 streaks of any kind that were longer than Clemson’s losing streak to North Carolina in Chapel Hill. It would seem that in a year where Clemson is 13-12 (5-6) and North Carolina is 22-4 (9-2) that the chances of Clemson win are as remote as ever.

Seriously Clemson probably has as good a chance to beat North Carolina Saturday as an undrafted, twice cut Harvard grad does of becoming the starting PG of the New York Knicks… oh wait. Clemson has as good chance of beating North Carolina in Chapel Hill as the Butler Bulldogs have of going to back to back National Title games… Darn it.

Ok now I have one, Clemson has as good a chance of winning at Chapel Hill as Baylor does of beating Oklahoma. The Bears were 0-20 against the Sooners. This past year they beat Oklahoma. So you are saying there’s a chance? There’s always a chance. Clemson is going to have to try and force the Tar Heels to become a jump shooting team and the hope for the best. I’m pretty much thinking this streak is going to hit 56 Saturday. I don’t see how the Tigers can match with the Tar Heel’s impressive frontline.
