ACC 2026 Football Schedule

California 

As one of the ACC expansion teams along with SMU and Stanford, California hasn’t had the winning consistency of SMU, but they have been far more competitive than Stanford. Over the last two years, there have been wins over Auburn, Minnesota, SMU, and Louisville. There were losses like the 2024 defeat to a 2-10 Florida State team and San Diego State, among others. Justin Wilcox was an OK coach, but never could get Cal over the hump. Tosh Lupoi is now the coach at Cal, and he’s got some pieces to work with, especially one very talented quarterback.

Will Go 10-2 (6-2) if:

Cal starts the year 4-0. The Golden Bears have a QB in Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele (JKS) that oozes potential. At times the QB looked like a future NFL quarterback. At others, he struggled forcing passes and reading defenses, but he has the ability in the world. If he develops consistency, and Cal knocks off UCLA, Syracuse, Wagner, and Clemson to start the season, then things could take off. There is a game at SMU, but that may be the only game where Cal is a sizeable underdog. The offense ranked 88th in the country in 2025, and that improves under JKS and improved pass protection; then they could be one of the surprise teams in the ACC.

Will Go 4-8 (2-6) if:

Cal struggles on the road. Road schedules are tough enough, but Cal has major miles to travel. There are games at Syracuse, at SMU, at NC State and at Virginia. A game at UNLV is high mileage, but still a tricky game. Cal could lose all 5 of those games. If the lines of scrimmage aren’t better overall, and JKS doesn’t take that step forward, then Cal opens the season 1-4. That UCLA game is huge, and in recent years Cal has been good for at least 1 solid OOC win. That’s an early-season game Cal must win.

What 10 games that don’t feature an ACC team are we most looking forward to catching?

Here are games 6-10.

1) Ohio State at Texas, September 12, 2026

Ohio State at Texas will be a top 5 matchup. This is the kind of matchup more brand schools should be putting together. Two great programs, with national championship hopes, playing a home-and-home series. Let’s hope these types of games don’t go away in the future, because they are a lot of fun for teams, coaches, and fans.

2) LSU at Ole Miss, September 19, 2026

The way Lane Kiffin left Ole Miss as the Rebels advanced to the college football semi-finals makes this game very intriguing for all the off-the-field drama. Both are fringe playoff possibilities, but I have to see what the Ole Miss fans have in store for Kiffin. That would be worth the price of admission itself.

3) Ohio State at Indiana, October 17, 2026

Indiana is your defending national champion; Ohio State won the national title 2 years ago. Both should be in the top 10 for this matchup. Could there really be a changing of the guard in the Big 10 from the Buckeyes to the Hoosiers?

4) Georgia at Alabama, October 10, 2026

Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer is 20-6 in two years at Alabama, but anything short of a national title post Nick Saban was going to frustrate Tide fans. Georgia has probably been the premier SEC team this decade, but hasn’t been to the national championship game since 2022. Alabama still has been able to have decent success against Georgia even with last years SEC Title game defeat. The winner of this game is in great position to reach the SEC Title game.

5) Oregon at Ohio State, November 7, 2026

Are Dan Lanning and Oregon ready to be the 4th different Big 10 team to win a national title this year? Lanning has had Oregon close, but still they’ve been behind the best the Big 10 has to offer. This matchup at Ohio State is a put up or shut up game for the Ducks. I really want to see how Oregon responds in this one.

6) Notre Dame at BYU, October 17, 2026

Notre Dame is a team I love this year. I think they are going to hover around the top 3 all season. First, they are going to be really good, and second, their schedule is pretty soft outside of Miami, SMU, and this gem against BYU. The Big 12 doesn’t get a lot of noteworthy out-of-conference games, but this one is massive for BYU and the Big 12. Notre Dame going on the road to Provo? That is going to be an electric atmosphere, and by far the Irish’s toughest road game of the year. I’m looking forward to this one.

7) Texas vs Oklahoma (Dallas), October 10, 2026

I love historical, traditional rivalry games. Give me a historical, deeply rooted matchup over any manufactured new realignment matchup. You are going to see a theme the rest of the way in the top 10. The Red River Rivalry is just a classic matchup with regional rivals, and both teams have playoff aspirations. Held with the State Fair of Texas as the backdrop, that’s college football pure and simple.

8) Texas at Texas A&M, November 27, 2026

From 2012-2023, this rivalry wasn’t played as a casualty of realignment. The SEC leaning into reestablishing games like this, unlike most other realignment moves, has helped them become a ratings juggernaut. People want to watch games where this is tradition and pageantry. That’s just a fact, but who really cares about fans? Certainly not the power brokers of college football, though I give the SEC credit for getting this one back. This game on Black Friday gives it an exclusive TV window, and that’s just smart. Any program that turns down a Black Friday scheduling spot has no vision. I’ll be watching.

9) BYU at Utah, November 7, 2026

I think BYU vs Utah is the Big 12’s best rivalry game. They call this one the Holy War, and since 2012 there’s only been 1 game decided by double digits. This is such a fierce rivalry the two schools can’t even agree on the number of times they’ve played each other. There is a good chance both teams will be among the better ones in the Big 12. Give me a good old-fashioned rivalry game any day.

10) Michigan at Ohio State, November 28, 2026

It’s not called the Big Game for nothing. The ratings that get pulled in for this game are always massive, and this year could be a top 10 matchup. The only reason I don’t have it higher is that I think Ohio State will be a considerable favorite at home, and it could look like last year’s 27-9 Ohio State win, but in a rivalry like this, anything can happen.

If you were a Miami or Georgia Tech fan Thursday night, then you had a lot to be excited about. Former Miami QB Carson Beck, and former Georgia Tech QB Haynes King shined. Sure, an opening pre-season game doesn’t mean we saw the next Tom Brady playing, but it could mean both are on NFL rosters come this fall.

Beck had a pretty good chance to make the Phoenix Cardinals squad as a 3rd round pick, but King was an undrafted free agent. That’s a far more difficult path to an NFL roster.

CBSSports gave their breakdown of both in their standout performances. 

On Carson Beck

The Miami product completed 15 of 19 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown in his first NFL action, and looked comfortable commanding this Mike LaFleur offensive attack. Maybe that was to be expected from the quarterback who racked up the most wins, passing yards and passing touchdowns in the FBS from 2023-25, but the point is the moment was not too big for him.

On Haynes King

He completed 21 of 34 passes for 180 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed for 39 yards, plus the game-winning score. King definitely missed a handful of throws, but made some, too.

The football gods looked down upon Chapel Hill and finally said, “Enough!”

North Carolina coach Bill Belichick’s odyssey has no path to Ithaca royalty. Belichick and general manager Mike Lombardi have violated Zues’s Law too many times as they crossed ACC seas.

They aren’t gracious hosts who welcome guests. They’re curmudgeons. They see anyone questioning them as fools. This is especially sacrilegious for a so-called No. 2 guy disgracing the football surname of Vince Lombardi. The Super Bowl trophy was named for the real football Lombardi.

Belichick and Mike Lombardi are intruders sacking Chapel Hill coffers. North Carolina pays Belichick $10 million a year and Lombardi $1.5 million. Imagine what a proud university could do with that kind of money. Imagine what high school coaches and teachers could do with that kind of support.

When Mike Lombardi was placed on administrative leave last month, that was the poke to the eye of Polyphemus. Poseidon was angered.

The only question is whether North Carolina allows its 74-year-old coach to finish his second season. How would Homer tell the story of Belichick’s final voyage? That’s complicated. Odysseus was a man of many ways in the Odyssey. Belichick is one-dimensional.

Belichick’s Trojan Horse was six Super Bowl trophies. Once the Trojan Horses shaped like trophies were safely through campus gates, the Tar Heels never looked inside. They would have learned Belichick was an aging coach who won six Super Bowls with quarterback Tom Brady and none without him. Brady claimed one additional Super Bowl title in Tampa Bay without Belichick.

Athena, though, knew Belichick’s history. She wanted nothing to do with serving as his guide. Belichick’s relationships turn sour.

Bill Parcells doesn’t like Belichick. Tom Brady left him. Robert Kraft didn’t give him job endorsements. Belichick and Lombardi barred Patriots scouts from the North Carolina campus. How often do you hear an old Patriots player praising him as a great guy?

Instead of Belichick benefitting from Athena’s mentoring, his pseudo-muse is a girlfriend nearly 50 years his junior, Jordon Hudson. She was the siren Belichick heard as he sailed from New England waters. He needed wax in his ears or to be tied to the ship’s mast.

Although the sorceress Circe didn’t turn North Carolina’s players into swine, they did go from athletes to entitled. They drove around Chapel Hill in NIL-funded fancy cars. They collected speeding and reckless driving charges and parked in handicap spots.

Agamemnon warned Belichick to arrive in Chapel Hill in disguise. The fanbase at a basketball school known for venerable Dean Smith and Roy Williams won’t accept a grumpy grouch for a coach.

At first, Belichick’s disguise worked. He knew the college football world believed he’d view visiting high school recruits as beneath him. So, on the first day that coaches were permitted to visit players on their high school campus, Belichick went to work early.

Zayvion Griffin-Haynes, a 4-star defensive end from nearby Rolesville High, had decommitted from North Carolina following the dismissal of Mack Brown. Belichick arrived by 7 a.m. to meet Griffin-Haynes. Belichick smiled as he posed for a photo, and Griffen-Haynes later signed with the Tar Heels.

But once the 2025 season began, Scylla and Charybdis awaited Belichick’s ship. The sea monsters devoured his Lombardi-assembled roster.

When TCU whipped North Carolina 48-14 in a season-opening game that ESPN built into a Super Bowl festivity, Horned Frogs coach Sonny Dykes dismissively told ESPN reporter Holly Rowe in a post-game interview that TCU has a good football team, too.

Calypso couldn’t think of a coach responding sardonically to beating a Vince Lombardi-coached team. She was cautious about him. She released Belichick on his journey.

When Belichick coached in the NFL, Calypso dismissed those in the media and fans labeling Belichick as the greatest coach of all time. They were living in the moment. No one with a sense of history prior to 2000 thinks Belichick’s record measures up to Vince Lombardi, who never had a losing season in nine years.

Vince Lombardi, as the Green Bay Packers head coach, won five NFL titles in seven seasons – 1961, 1962, 1965, 1966 and 1967 — with the last two referred to as the Super Bowl. He took over a 1-10-1 Packers team and led them to a 7-5 record his first season, 1959. Lombardi took over the 5-9 Washington franchise and finished 7-5-2 his first season, 1969.

Belichick began his career with losing seasons in Cleveland (when Brady was in high school) and finished with losing seasons in New England (after Brady left for Tampa Bay).

Calypso also noted Vince Lombardi wasn’t gifted by dumb play calling in the final moments to provide two Super Bowl wins. The Patriots won Super Bowl XLIX thanks to Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, and Super Bowl LI thanks to Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan.

One player who safely escaped Belichick’s shipwreck was quarterback Gio Lopez. He transferred to Wake Forest, where he says he feels truly wanted instead of just a guy with a number on his jersey.

Another player transferring out was Tyler Thompson, a defensive end from nearby Panther Creek High who left for Louisville.

When Thompson turned down Michigan and Jim Harbaugh in 2023 for North Carolina and Mack Brown, Thompson said of his Michigan recruiting trip there was “something strange about them.” After one season with Belichick, he was prescient again.

Christopher Nolan couldn’t come up with a moral ending that returns Belichick to Ithaca. There are no suitors on campus. There is no Matt Damon to string the bow.

Penelope and Telemachus must continue their wait for another royal football coach to arrive.

CHARLOTTE – A story waiting to be told throughout the offseason was Darian Mensah’s last-minute transfer within the ACC. He left Duke, the ACC champion that signed him to a two-year $8 million deal, for Miami.

What was he thinking to enter the transfer portal after previously saying he was remaining at Duke?

“Business is business,” said Mensah during a breakout interview at the ACC Kickoff media days.

Such a comment referenced a pay raise reported to be $6.5 million, and he added a chance to play for a national championship. This is the same guy who tugged at heart strings, saying when he left Tulane for Duke in 2025, the Blue Devils gave him a chance to economically improve his mother’s life. He won the lottery.

That’s the kind of story that sold newspapers in the ink-stained wretch days as well as now in the Internet click-bait age.

But what about the guy who committed to Duke out of high school, enjoyed success as a true freshman and resisted the transfer temptations?

Duke running back Nate Sheppard ran for 1,125 yards and 11 touchdowns and caught 37 balls for 286 yards. He finished strong, too, with 170 yards rushing in the Sun Bowl victory over Arizona State.

With that kind of production, tampering through third-party associates is part of the game these days. What brought Sheppard back to Duke?

“Obviously I committed to this man up on the stage, Manny Diaz,” said Sheppard, one of three Blue Devils to represent the school at the ACC Kickoff. “I believed in his vision, everything that he was preaching, and I’ve seen it come to fruition these last two years that he’s been here, especially winning the ACC championship. Those are big reasons why I decided to come back.”

Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi added to the Mensah story at the ACC Kickoff when he accused Miami of pursuing his quarterback, Mason Heintschel, before turning its attention to Mensah.

North Carolina coach Bill Belichick weighed in on transfers while appearing July 24 with Diaz and NC State’s Dave Doeren at the annual Pigskin Preview hosted by the Billy Dooley Chapter of the National Football Foundation. Belichick said the ACC needs to challenge tampering within the conference as well as from a school outside the ACC membership.

Sheppard also said this about returning to Durham:

“The ultimate deciding factor was just the team we have and the family we have in that locker room. I think we have one of the best locker rooms in the country, one of the best cultures in the country.”

Who do you want representing your school?

The guy who says “business is business” or the guy he speaks in paragraphs about his respect for his coach, teammates and school?

The latter, obviously, but Mensah’s story was the one that got the headlines. And there’s this to consider about college football in the age of paying athletes and the transfer: There’s no shame.

In the past, a player with the baggage of a cynical transfer wouldn’t have been one of three players brought to the conference’s showcase preseason to represent the school. But third- and fourth-year players with stature and history on the roster as the face of a program represent a bygone era. Mensah was in the ballroom for the formal interviews and drawing a crowd around his table for the breakout interviews in a conference room.

That makes Sheppard’s story all the more refreshing. He’s the poster boy for a school building a culture that carries the team through a season and later in life at reunions.  Duke coach Manny Diaz was philosophical about the challenge of retaining a roster in the new era of money and transfers. He was asked about keep players.

“There’s no way to ensure that,” Diaz said. “There’s no way anybody in the country can ensure that. What we can ensure is that we have a thing that attracts people, that people ideally want to stay, but it also attracts great players.

“That’s been the one common denominator is, look, in our program, we’re only two years in our program. The way we’re recruiting, the caliber of high school player we’re recruiting, understanding the family that wants their son to graduate from Duke is really, really important.”

Diaz also pointed to the hidden message of finding talent and developing it. Duke football, unlike Duke basketball as a magnet for 5-star and 4-star players, must rely on 3-star prospects playing like 4-stars. Sheppard, who earned second-team All-ACC honors, was a three-star recruit from Mandeville, Louisiana.

“Listen, if people want our players, that means we’re doing something well, right?” Diaz said. “If we stunk, nobody would want any of our guys. So, this is kind of a champagne problem, right, when you win a lot of games and have a lot of guys perform at a high level, ideally the whole idea is that they’ll have the opportunity to go straight from Durham to the NFL Draft, right?

“We’ve had guys that have done that, that developed, and all got drafted this past spring. That’s going to become a recurring theme at our program.”

Mensah may end up realizing his dream of leading Miami to a national title. But what if he doesn’t. Last year, Miami quarterback Carson Beck transferred in from Georgia chasing a national title with a big pay raise. He was close, earning a berth in the College Football Playoff championship game. But he ultimately came up empty-handed.

Think Miami’s fanbase will embrace Beck as an older alum? He’s already forgotten. He’s a Georgia guy.

That will be another dimension to watch about our changing times a couple decades down the road. Who will be better remembered by their school – the guys chasing money or the guy adding to a school’s legacy?

Or maybe by then fans won’t care. Mensah’s story at the ACC Kickoff was an example of already heading down that slippery slope.

ACC 2026 Football Schedule

Florida State

The collapse of Florida State football has been astonishing. After a 13-0 regular season where FSU, which saw the Noles unjustly left out of the playoffs in 2023, the bottom just fell out of a program in an unimaginable way. Florida State, after going 23-4 in 2022 and 2023, became the worst football program in the ACC, going 3-13 in the ACC over the last 2 years. They went 5-7 in 2025, and it was a 3-game improvement over the year before. Mike Norvell enters the season with his seat on absolute fire, but look under the surface, and FSU was really close to an 8-4 type season. 5 of their losses were by 10 points or less, and of course there was the trouncing of Alabama that shocked the football world. There were glimpses last year of real improvement. Will he see more in 2026?

Will Go 8-4 (5-3) if:

FSU can perform better in the close games. The Seminoles were terrible in 2024, but in 2025 there were some positive signs. If FSU beats SMU, a 4-1 start is a real possibility. I’d have them losing to Alabama, but remember they stuffed the Tide in a locker last year. After that are games at Louisville and at Miami, but even if there is an additional loss somewhere, that could still be an 8-4 type season. There is some talent on the team. Duce Robinson is one of the best WR’s in the ACC, and maybe the country. QB Ashton Daniels is a wild card. He’s flashed potential, and if he can be consistent, then we could see FSU win quite a few games.

Will Go 4-8 (2-7) if:

Florida State still hasn’t figured out how to win. When you only won 7 total games, and 3 ACC games in the last 2 years, that’s a team that has to learn how to win. Sure, there has been the lightning-in-a-bottle win, but this schedule could have them 3-4 with a visit from Clemson. They hit the portal hard again, but it hasn’t helped much the last two years. It could happen. The OOC schedule has Alabama and Florida, and in conference the Noles play the pre-season top 3 ACC teams, SMU, Louisville, and Miami. Virginia should be solid; then there is Clemson, a game at Pitt, and NC State. Those 9 challenging games, and the current version of Florida State could lose most, if not all, of them.

ACC 2026 Football Schedule

Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh is arguably the most difficult team to predict in the ACC year after year. They can be great one game, awful the next. They can be great for 2 months, then awful. What defines Pitt football is their wild inconsistency. For a two-year period in 2021 and 2022 it looked like Pitt had turned the corner, winning 20 games and an ACC title, but of course that was followed by a 3-9 2023. Pat Narduzzi is a good coach in my opinion, but how can he build the winning consistency Pitt fans are so desperate for? Being good at QB is a start, and in Mason Heintschel they have one with a ton of potential.

Will Go 10-2 (7-2) if:

QB Mason Heintschel takes another step in his sophomore year. Last year Heintschel was really good, but prone to forcing passes when things broke down. He’s a confident QB, though, that you can build a team around. If he plays well in Pitt’s first 4 winnable games against Miami (Ohio), UCF, Syracuse and Bucknell, he could right that the rest of the way. Pitt plays at Miami and at Louisville, but the rest of the schedule is quite manageable. There’s a real chance for Pitt to be 6-1, or 7-0 before playing at Miami. If an offense that was in the 60s last year has more balance, where the running game was 114th last year, then I could see Pitt having a big season.

Will Go 7-5 (4-5) if:

Pitt has a kind of typical Pitt season. 9 of 11 seasons in Narduzzi’s tenure have finished with 5 or more losses. Games at Miami and Louisville could definitely be losses, but while the schedule isn’t brutal, there are games with single-digit point spreads. Games at Virginia Tech, and a finish with Georgia Tech, Florida State, Miami, and Cal won’t be easy. UCF is out of conference. The defense was decent last year, but could give up big plays, and if Heintschel has that proverbial sophomore slump, the season could be nothing special.

Good afternoon, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) sports fans.  We’re in August – college football starts this month

In the mean time, we need to update you on University of North Carolina Tar Heel football, because, honestly, it’s in such a bad spot right now, that you can’t stop watching it – it’s similar to the scenario of watching a car drive into the Grand Canyon.  You know something bad is going to happen – but you can’t take your eyes away from it.

We’ve blogged about the need to move on from Bill Belichick.  I believe we were the first.  We also blogged about how tone deaf Belichick really is.

We also thought UNC had an opportunity to terminate Belichick from his contract – and not have to pay a buyout – player misconduct issues.

Now, it’s reported (hat to to @InsideCarolina) that Tar Heel football’s general manager, Michael Lombardi is on paid administrative leave for a personnel issue and he has hired an attorney, which is certainly his right – and that the College Sports Commission is looking into North Carlina NIL deals and Lombardi.

You can see that Tar Heel football is dumpster fire – but aside from all these distractions, there’s lots of incompetence and that matters with revenue sports.  North Carolina was 4-8 in Belichick’s first year – and this with the 2025 roster built by his esteemed general manager.  Then they had to construct another one for 2026.  Belichick and Lombardi own both of these roster constructions.  North Carolina plays 7 of the top 10 ACC football teams as ranked in the 2026 preseason poll – and it’s hard to believe that the Tar Heels will win more than 2 of their first six games.  If you look at the back half of North Carolina’s football schedule – the Tar Heels play Syracuse, Miami, UConn, Louisville, Virginia, and NC State – I can see 2 maybe 3 wins in that group at best?  I believe you’re looking at a 4-8  or 3-9season as the max for 2026 Tar Heel football.

The off-the-field distractions do cause problems with a football team – but I can tell you that North Carolina football boosters and donors – and the administration didn’t pay for 7 to 8 wins in two years.  Could Bill Belichick be gone by after the game with Duke on October 17?  I think he could – I think it is very possible.  At some point, fan apathy sinks in – and it becomes more expensive not to take action.

The short of it is, I think the North Carolina administration must get to an agreeable buyout number with Bill Belichick (save the hardball tactics if – like everyone thinks – he has an undisciplined team by midseason – and the team drives figuratively into the Grand Canyon).
