Harrison, K. David, When Languages Die: The Extinction of the World’s Languages and the Erosion of Human Knowledge, New York: Oxford, 2007.

The author of When Languages Die is a linguistic anthropologist who writes descriptively about the scientific research being done with some of the 3500 “small languages” in the world, and what may be lost if or when they completely disappear. A few statistics give an overview:

In 2001 6.34 billion humans spoke 6912 languages.
Half of the world’s languages have fewer than 5000 speakers, and these are spoken by only 0.2% of the world’s population.
In 2005 204 languages had fewer than 10 speakers each, and 344 languages had 10 to 99 speakers each.
The last speakers of probably half the world’s languages are alive today. Many of them are elderly, and they live in an environment where the younger generations have decided to speak dominant languages like English, Spanish or Russian.
It is estimated that by 2101, in just 100 years, half of these minor languages will have disappeared.

This is fascinating to me because I am interested in why education is important for people, and what it means to be a literate person. Education—the gathering, use and production of data, information, knowledge, wisdom—is usually seen as improving the life of an individual. It is even thought by many to be the way out of many social difficulties such as poverty. To be educated is to be literate, commonly meant to be able to read and write. However, other types of literacies are widely discussed, for example: numerical literacy (the opposite of innumerancy), computer literacy, library literacy, health literacy, and more. So, as we contemplate “education,” why not explore “indigenous literacies,” especially when there is much value in these realms that is eroding? What is being lost involves human cultural heritage: poetry, oral history, epic tales, creation stories, jokes, riddles, wise sayings, lullabies, word play creativity, and environmental interaction.

For a visual understanding of what is happening with major and minor languages as globalization affects our lives, you may be interested to see one project that he contributes to, Enduring Voices. The project, at http://www.nationalgeographic.com/mission/enduringvoices/ displays a map of endangered and disappearing languages. It proclaims that about every two weeks a language dies, taking with it unique human knowledge that has been encoded in that language over millennia. This author, as well as other scientists, is active in the effort to record and glean information from our spoken human record, especially those that are quickly vanishing from the face of the Earth. What an intriguing book.

You don’t think you’re too old or too wise to read a book categorized as “children’s literature,” do you? Why, after all, do people read fiction? Partly to encounter richly-developed engaging characters whose perspectives and experiences can enrich our own. Walk Two Moons, by Sharon Creech, is written from the point of view of a 13-year-old girl, Sal, who travels on a long car trip with her vibrant grandparents in search of Sal’s mother, who has left the family. Sal is at the point in her life when she’s struggling to expand her understandings of people’s complicated motivations, and we watch during the course of 280 pages as she succeeds. Parallel to Sal’s story about reconnecting with her mother is the tale she tells her grandparents about her experiences with her friend, who also has a mother who has left her family for complicated reasons that slowly emerge. The girls’ adventures as detectives lead them to meet very interesting characters as they pursue clues in mysterious Zen-like notes left for them by someone they call “the lunatic.”

The highlight of the book for me was the grandparents – how they show their love for each other and Sal, how they embrace life’s unexpected moments and turn them into happiness (at one point Grandma winds up in the middle of a jubilant Indian dance circle), and how they cope with their own past losses. I so wish these two people were real and I could enjoy their friendship and wisdom.

Walk Two Moons was awarded the 1995 John Newbery medal as the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children published in English in the United States during the preceding year.

People and scenes from the book have come to mind, sometimes unbidden, in the weeks since I finished it; I feel richer and wiser for having met these people. No words of encouragement to read this book could be too strong – and the Mercer libraries have six copies.

Jim Westbrook on "Killer Angels"

Years ago the name Michael Shaara on the Book Nook shelf caught my eye. He was my professor at Florida State University. He wrote a book titled Killer Angels, which is about the Battle of Gettysburg. It's told from very personal points of view of four of the main participants. You may have seen the TV movie Gettysburg - it is still hard to take Martin Sheen as Lee after reading the book!

Jeff Shaara, Michael's son, has picked up the formula and has written several books, including a prequel and a sequel to Angels. Jeff has also written a pair of books about the American Revolution, one about the Mexican-American War, etc. Good stuff, but does not flow as fast as a Robert B. Parker novel.

Roy Cummings is reading: Technical Communication by Mike Markel

Based on what I've read so far, I think this is a pretty good book. I appreciate the fact that it's written so most people can actually understand it, which is a far cry from most textbooks I've read... well, browsed.

I also like that it has lots of real-world examples to supplement the lessons, so much of what's discussed is not just theoretical. Many of the illustrations are excerpts from actual business documents. I feel if the author's principles are being used everyday with results, they must be good.

I know the subject won't interest many people, but the book is a good investment for people interested in the method of the madness of technical communication.

What Content-Area Teachers Should Know About Adolescent Literacy

The goal of this report (click on the title for this post to download it), prepared by the National Institute for Literacy (part of the U.S. Department of Education) is to help address middle and high school classroom teachers’, administrators’, and parents’ immediate need for basic information about how to build adolescents’ reading and writing skills. The report summarizes some of the current literature on adolescent literacy research and practice. It is divided into two main sections. The first section describes five key components that are critical to the development of reading proficiency: decoding/phonemic awareness and phonics, morphology, vocabulary, fluency, and text comprehension. The second section discusses four other areas that are fundamental in helping adolescents achieve advanced levels of literacy: assessment, writing, motivation, and the needs of diverse learners.

School Reform in Washington, D.C.
School Chancellor Michelle Rhee has initiated efforts to improve student performance. Her proposals regarding tenure, teacher pay, and professional development have met resistance from some of the district’s teachers. New Orleans Charter Schools Produce Mixed Results
There are now more than 5,000 charter schools in the U.S. From the transcript: “Charter schools are public schools, open to all and paid for with tax dollars. They're free from board control and often from teacher unions, and so, unlike traditional public schools, charters make their own decisions about curriculum, staffing, and student rules.” This transcript offers several perspectives on the strengths and challenges of charter schools.

A Goal: Increase College Enrollment of Low-Income Students
A high school teacher in St. Louis is interviewed about his work to help students enter college. The College Summit Program was started in 1993 to work in partnership with schools, school districts and colleges to develop a sustainable model for closing the college enrollment gap among low-income students. College Summit has served more than 35,000 high school seniors and trained more than 1,200 teachers and counselors.

Middle School “Future Cities” Competition Integrates Skills
The National Engineers Week Future City Competition organizes a yearly nationwide competition designed to build students’ skills in problem-solving, teamwork, research and presentation skills, practical math and science applications, and computer skills. More than 30,000 students from 1,100 middle schools participated in this year's regional contests. They all designed and tested their urban planning ideas using a computer game called "SimCity 4." This NewsHour episode highlights a few of the benefits for students who participate and tracks one team in the Finals.

"Small Interventions, Big Achievements"

An educational researcher asked middle-grades inner-city Detroit children what kind of future they would like to have, what difficulties they anticipated along the way, how they might deal with them, and which of their friends would be most helpful in coping. "After only a few such exercises in life planning, the children improved their performance on standardized academic tests, and the number who were required to repeat a grade dropped by more than half." In a New York Times opinion column published February 8, 2009, Richard E. Nisbett, professor of psychology at the University of Michigan, describes several examples of interventions that provide strong impact on educational achievement for a small cost. You'll need to create a References list for many of your academic papers. Swilley Library offers web-based software called RefWorks which does quite a bit of the work for you. For the small investment of time you'd need to learn to use it, you'll find it might save you many hours during the semester. Librarians would be happy to help you learn to use it -- just ask us. Furthermore, RefWorks has very good online tutorials and help menus.

World Development Indicators, Global Development Finance, Africa Development Indicators, and Global Economic Monitor are now free, open, and easy to access at data.worldbank.org

Recognizing that transparency and accountability are essential to development, the World Bank Group now provides free, open, and easy access to its comprehensive set of data on living standards around the globe—some 2,000 indicators, including hundreds that go back 50 years. The data is available in Arabic, French, and Spanish in addition to English.

As of April 1999, the law was amended from its 1976 status with the inclusion of the Digital Millennium Copyright Law and the Sonny Bono Term Extension Act.
Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction to researchers. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying or reproduction order if, in its judgement, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of the copyright law.
Fair Use
According to the copyright law: "In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered include-
the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
The nature of the copyrighted work;
The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
The effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work. The fact that a work is unpublished shall not itself bar a finding of fair use if such finding is made upon consideration of all the above factors."

How to obtain permission to reproduce materials from the Ad*Access Project
The Duke University Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library does not hold copyright to the advertisements in the Ad*Access on-line project. If you would like to reproduce any of the advertisements in a way that does not fall under fair use, please follow the steps noted below:
Obtain permission from the current copyright holder.
Individuals wishing to publish or broadcast any advertisement included on this website must assume all responsibility for identifying and satisfying any claimants of copyright, trademarks, or service marks. Included on this website is a partial list of companies for which we have contact information. This is not a complete list of all companies represented in Ad*Access.
Obtain permission also from the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History to reproduce materials held in its archive and featured on this website.
A letter granting permission from the current copyright holder must be submitted along with the request to the Hartman Center.
Contact the company that owns the product(s) contained in the advertisements you would like to use. You must provide written permission from these companies before the Hartman Center can provide permission to use an advertisement for a purpose which does not fall under "fair use." Please read on for more information.
The Hartman Center charges fees to cover the cost of reproduction of items in its collections. Requests that require extensive research or preparation by Center staff may require an hourly charge, negotiated in advance. In addition, requests to publish, broadcast, or otherwise disseminate ads may be subject to a commercial use fee. Please contact the Hartman Center Reference Archivist for more information and a fee schedule.

How to cite materials from the Ad*Access Project
When using advertisements from the Ad*Access Project, please acknowledge their source by clearly stating the name of the project, the advertisement number, the collection name, and the name of the library. Also include the URL of the project page. An example is noted below:

EconLit adheres to the high quality standards long recognized by subscribers to the Journal of Economic Literature (JEL) and is a reliable source of citations and abstracts to economic research dating back to 1969. It provides links to full text articles in all fields of economics, including capital markets, country studies, econometrics, economic forecasting, environmental economics, government regulations, labor economics, monetary theory, urban economics and much more. Welcome to another useful site that I located for those of you finishing up business plans.....
BINCS is a search engine of manufacturers and suppliers. Information in this system is cross-referenced to permit inquiry by CAGE, DUNS, Company Name, Phone Number, SIC Code and ZIP code. Information about the supplier is returned from the CAGE File, the CCR File, and the Joint US/Canada Certification Program. BINCS provides linkages to each of these source systems for an expanded view of the trading partner's profile.
