ARCTURUS

Arcturus are an avant-garde metal band from Norway featuring many prominent members of the Norwegian black metal scene from bands such as Ulver, Dimmu Borgir, Mayhem, Borknagar, The Kovenant, Emperor, and Winds. Arcturus have experimented throughout their career, extracting influences and incorporating elements from all over the musical spectrum including black metal and classical music, but the core of their sound has always been metal.

Arcturus was formed in 1987 as death metal act Mortem. They released an EP and a demo under this name. In 1990, they changed their name to Arcturus, which is the name of a star and means "Guardian of Bears".

In 1995, Arcturus released "Aspera Hiems Symfonia" (latin form of Harsh Winter Symphony), acclaimed to be one of the most innovative black metal album ever. That line-up consisted of:
Garm (Kristoffer Rygg) - Vocals
Hellhammer (Jan Axel von Blomberg) - Drums
Sverd (Steinar Sverd Johnsen) - Synths
August (Carl August Tidemann) - Guitar
Skoll (Hugh Stephen James Mingay) - Bass (not assigned on album credits)

Aspera Hiems Symfonia is a mix of early 90s norwegian black metal, classical melodies, waltz and refined touch of nordic coldness. The lyrics concentrate on the themes of winter and the darkness of night.

"All music & words on Aspera Hiems Symfonia emanated from our souls profoundly". This phrase represents it perfectly.

In 1997 Arcturus released the much acclaimed "La Masquerade Infernale" album. The theatrical, almost carnivalesque, style built around Sverd's keyboard was introduced by the large vocals range of Garm (and guest Simen Hestnæs) and this became their trademark.

After a remix album "Disguised Masters", Arcturus offered their third major effort with "The Sham Mirrors", whose keyboards' dynamic melodies also received good reviews.

Mort is quite famous in depressive scene and has played in projects like Exiled from Light, Nystagmus, Winds of Sorrow and Schizophrenia (he is those). This is the self-named debut full-length. 48 minutes of depressive black metal.

Fimbultyr - Gryende Tidevarv

Fimbultyr ("Mighty God, one of Odins name") is Black/Viking Metal from Sweden. First time i heard about Fimbultyr in one forum, where one of band members posted for promotion. The demo was free to download. And i pretty liked it (good quality material). Now about 2 or 3 years, when I haven't heard about them , I am holding their release called Gryende Tidevarv. I'll give it a try.

Artistas SimilaresNazxul is a black metal band from Sydney, Australia. The group was formed in 1993 by guitarist Adrian Henderson, keyboards player/guitarist Lachlan Mitchell, former Mortal Sin and Slaughter Lord drummer Steve Hughes and Dalibor Backovic on vocals and bass. A demo appeared the following year and with the addition of guitarist Greg Morelli from Sydney thrash band Grungeon. Nazxul began work on an album called Totem that was released in 1996. Originally envisioned as a mysterious studio-bound project, the group only appeared in publicity photos as shadowy figures or draped facelessly in cloaks.

Kalmah is a band from Finland that has stormed onto the metal scene with their debut album "Swamplord". Well debut may not exactly be accurate. They started in 1993 as a band entitled Ancestor. Of course back then they were a straight-forward death metal band but changed to a more melodic approach in 1999 and changed their name to Kalmah. Although this is melodic death metal it definitely has a lot to offer. Excellent guitar work with great leads and kick ass riffs with more than a passing influence from good old thrash metal. I recently had a chance to do an interview with lead guitarist Antti Kokko and this is what he had to say. ENJOY…:)

Thirdmoon (Austria/France) was formed in the year 1994. In the beginning, it was meant to be a side project, but it turned out to be more. Wolfgang (Guitars and Vocals), Markus (Bass and Key) and Milan (Drums) have recorded their first album "Grotesque Autumnal Weepings" (Melodic Black Metal) on CCP Records in autumn 1997. In spring 1998 Matias, from Bayonne (the Basque Provinces) joined the band as an inspiring guitar player. 1999: Thirdmoon signed a contract with Napalm Records and the 2nd Album "Aquis Submersus" (Dark Metal) was released. After personal conflicts, Milan has been replaced by Johannes. In the year 2000, the 3rd Album "Bloodforsaken" (Dark Metal) was promoted by a tour with the german "Eisregen" (coolest guys) and special guests: "Sturm" and "Couragous" (both from Germany and marvellous guys). Again, after personal problems, Markus left the band, too. Spring 2001: Thirdmoon recorded a new Album "Sworn Enemy: Heaven" (in the style of Testament, Hypocrisy and Arch Enemy).
