Catnip : Spray by Rudducks of Australia

Bought a 250ml catnip spray by Rudducks from Pet Lovers Center (Sunway Pyramid) at RM25... hoping to 'bring out the kitten in my cats' .... I sprayed.... Sprayed... Sprayed... LULU and TIGER looked at me, thinking that I am mad (again. ...

It's interesting for 2 reasons:

It goes to show that you do have to be careful about what kind of catnip spray you get, because it may not always have the potency and freshness that actual fresh catnip leaves do.  She wasn't impressed with the spray, nor the price, nor were the cats themselves.

The other interesting thing is that I knew the mall she was referring to!  It's a pretty big mall in Kuala Lumpur with a large sphinx-lion out in front.  We spent a couple weeks in Malaysia previously and stayed a few days in a hotel near there.  Not only is Sunway Pyramid a mall, but there's an amusement park / aqua park type center that's part of the complex.  There's also a hockey rink in the mall, which is something that might be slightly surprising in balmy Kuala Lumpur...

How To Grow Catnip

Growing catnip is not as difficult as you might expect it to be. It is actually pretty easy to grow catnip in any garden soil from catnip seeds. Once you have a few flowers growing, catnip can also be propagated by root division and transplanting as well. Catnip, like any other weed-like plant, will spread easily to fill up your beds, planters, or pots. For best conditions of growing, catnip should be in full sun, though partial shade will still net you adequate plants. The US Dept of Agriculture advises to freeze the catnip seeds a time or three and only plant them after a good soaking in water.

The season for growing catnip to bloom is in the summer time, yielding white or purple flowers. Since it is a perennial, there will be no need to grow catnip anew each year. It'll take care of that for you! That said, you will need to protect it, as surely those pesky cats will find it, and if you let them, rip off the catnip leaves in a paroxysm of happiness, forcing you to get back to growing catnip from square one. Wire cages around the growing catnip should help to keep it safe.

Harvesting What You Grow

Catnip flowers are white or purple. You can harvest the catnip leaves on an as-needed basis. They should be mature and dry. Be very careful when harvesting, as you don't want to damage the catnip leaves. Any bruising or crushing will release the catnip oil, dulling the potency of the plant, and probably attracting neighbor cats eager for a treat. Then you will want to dry them in the sun. Be careful not to bundle them up, since this will damage the catnip leaves, reducing their odor and coloring. It is oft-repeated that cats will ignore catnip plants that have been grown from catnip seeds, but delight in transplanted or divided plants. This may be true, but since it's so easy actually growing catnip, this will only help you the first year that you grow catnip. After that, you'll have to take security measures.

Catnip Tea

In addition to its more recognized effects on cats, catnip can be made into catnip tea. Catnip tea is reputed to have major benefits and health advantages. Let's take a look at some interesting information about catnip tea, shall we?

First, an important note on catnip consumption by humans: Do not use the catnip that you would buy for your pets, because that catnip is "impure", usually mixed with other plant products or stems and stalks that aren't good for you. You want to make sure to only use fresh catnip right off the plant, or dried catnip. Additionally, you can find catnip in capsule form or as a liquid that you can use safely. You can also use crushed catnip seeds or powdered roots to make the catnip tea.

Catnip Tea Recipe

• 1-2 teaspoons of fresh catnip leaves (if you can't get fresh catnip leaves, dried catnip is fine)
• 1 cup of water
• Sugar / honey to taste

Opinions differ on whether or not to actually boil the catnip leaves or just steep them, as boiling may reduce the effectiveness of the catnip leaves. Usually you'd boil the catnip for 10-15 minutes, but for steeping, you'd boil the water, take the pan off the heat, and THEN add the catnip leaves or dried catnip and let it sit for 7-10 minutes. Drink warm. Add the sugar or honey as per your tastes. The recommendation is to drink catnip tea 3 times a day.

The Effects of Catnip Tea

Catnip tea has been used for various different medical effects. One of the more basic to note is that while for cats it is a stimulant, catnip is a minor sedative for humans, so a cup of catnip tea before bed time is good for relaxing and improving sleep. Since it is a mint, it also reduces nausea from upset stomachs. It is a well known remedy for infant colic, as well as a non-drug way to help calm hyperactive children. It can also be used as a tincture for children's coughs.

Alternate Forms of Catnip Tea

Catnip tea can be used as an anti-inflammatory for relief of conditions such as hay fever, colds, the flu, or swollen, bloodshot eyes. After steeping, soak a towel in the tea and apply over the eyes a la steak for black eyes. You can also use previously soaked catnip tea bags for the same application.

Another concern when buying bulk catnip is the possibility of catnip seeds, catnip leaves and stems in the package. You don't want your cats eating these so be sure that your supplier does a good job of sifting those out and that the resultant bulk catnip is sifted and dried carefully to preserve the catnip's potency. Nobody wants to buy bulk catnip that is in all reality all stems and stalks.
