1. Mule Ride
   
   This is definitely a splurge – a mule ride is not cheap. But 150% worth every penny! The trail ride down into the canyon with an overnight stay at Phantom Ranch is tricky to secure – this books up over a year in advance and starting in 2019 will only be available on a lottery system. But the Canyon Vista Mule ride is perfect for kids!The Canyon Vista Mule ride is a 4-mile ride that has you in the saddle for about 3 hours total (which is plenty long for smaller kids!) along the new East Rim Trail that was built by the National Park Service. While you are on the edge of the trail, you generally have a few feet between you and the drop, so it’s a little less nerve-wracking! Two things to know: First, safety is the #1 concern for a mule ride. Height, weight, age limits and dress codes are STRICTLY enforced. Make sure your children qualify before they arrive with their hearts set on a ride!  Second, while you are not right along the rim, you are up high on a mule and really close to the edge, so if you are afraid of heights, you may want to skip this!
2. Rim Trail.
   
   Although it is a fairly long hike, it’s very low impact since the trail has a minimal elevation level the entire way through. For those who wish to bike the trail or who have little ones in strollers, the trail is ideally suited because it’s paved almost entirely throughout, making it easy to navigate.
   While it’s an easy hike in terms of terrain, there aren’t many places to stop for food or water along the trail, so, definitely bring snacks and plenty of water for the hike. I’d also advise traveling either in the early morning before heat kicks in or go during the late afternoon when it’s cooler and the trail is shadier.
3. Lunch at Bright Angel Lodge.
   
   History buffs can’t help but love the Bright Angel Lodge. It has been around since 1935 and is considered to be a National Historic Landmark. It started out as a hotel, then transitioned into a camp before finally becoming a lodge. These days the lodge is home to 90 cabins, a family friendly dining options and is a known historical train station, which the kids thought was super interesting.
   We weren’t able to snag a room here, but just eating at the Harvey House Cafe inside the lodge is a treat! The restaurant is casual and comfortable with classic food your kids will eat – but you’ll appreciate the historical significance as you enjoy vintage diner food!
4. Bright Angel Trail.
   
   The Bright Angel Trail is a dirt based trail that goes into the canyon – this is probably the trail you picture when you think of hiking the Grand Canyon! I wouldn’t recommend for little ones as the incline is rather steep and there are no guard rails along the dramatic drop-offs. But for children who are 10+, the trail should be manageable. It is recommended that you give uphill hikers the right away while on the trail and to choose the time of your hike wisely due to the heat as well as lack of shade at different points of the day.  We were there is April (as you can see by how bundled up I am!) so we were able to do the hike after lunch with no problem. We made it a mile down before we decided to hike up so we could make it to the sunset.
5. Sunset at Yavapai Point.
   
   Located in close proximity to the South Rim visitor center, Yavapai Point is a wonderful vantage point for some of the most amazing views of the Grand Canyon and surrounding sights such as the Colorado River, and Bright Angel Canyon. You can also view the Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel and North Kaibab Trails from your perch at Yavapai Point.
   Get there early! Parking is very limited and the good vantage spots get crowded long before sunset.

When you first walk into the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, you will be amazed – just like Harry was. The attention to detail is just incredible and nothing was left out. From snow-crested rooftops to butterbeer, this is an experience like no other.

One activity that is really cool is after you pick out your wand at Ollivander’s. If you have one of the special interactive ones you will be able to go around and perform “spells” throughout the park. You will know which ones they are on the map. But, just like magic, not everything is as it seems. There are hidden spell places that will take you off of the beaten path and show you a world you didn’t know existed.

Ollivander Wand Ceremony – The ceremony is a short show where one person from the audience is chosen to try out different wands. It’s a mimic of the wand choosing ceremony from the actual Harry Potter books. Afterwards, you are free to browse Ollivander’s to find your own wand. Both Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley have the wand shop, but only Diagon does the ceremony. Another great tip is if you have a child that wants to do it, try to watch the line and go in with a group of adults. They lean more to picking out children but the more kids they are, the less likely yours will be picked. Another great way to stack the odds in your favor is to have your child dress up like their favorite character.

Escape from Gringotts – Everyone remembers the iconic Deathly Hallows scene with Harry, Ron and Hermione. This ride takes that and puts you right in the action of the escape. You’ll have to break in, and out, and avoid dragons as well as death eaters. Escape from Gringotts is found in Diagon Alley. This was one of my favorite rides because they animatronics was amazing.

Dragon Challenge – This fast-paced roller coaster is located in Hogsmeade. It’s two different coasters on separate tracks that race against each other. Set around the theme of the first challenge for the Triwizard tournament, be prepared to ride on either a Chinese Fireball or a Hungarian Horntail. (I thought the Chinese Fireball was more intense!)

Hogwarts and the Forbidden Journey – We’ve all wondered what’s it’s like to ride on a broomstick, right? Well, in Hogwarts and the Forbidden Journey you get to experience just that. What starts as a late night sneak out to play quidditch turns into a flight through the forbidden forest. The ride queue for this one is uniquely special considering you get to walk through Hogwarts. The Forbidden Journey is in Hogsmeade and is one of the longest waits due to being popular. But, it’s totally worth it!

Hogwarts Express – Okay, so this isn’t really a ride you would expect. It’s a relaxing train ride that shows a different story from the two different destinations. You sit in a carriage car much like the Hogwarts Students did at the beginning of each school year. It’s a great way to have a few minutes to yourself to relax. You board the train at King’s Cross or Hogsmeade Station. Make sure you ride it both ways because the story is different each way. You need to have a multi-park pass in order to ride this one.

Visit the Bronx Zoo

Seeing one of the top zoos in the country can be expensive with a family, so take your kids on a Wednesday where admission to the Bronx Zoo is the cost of a pay-what-you-wish donation. (Children 2 and under are always free.) Experience penguin and sea lion feedings and see 265 acres filled with wildlife habitats and zoo attractions. Make your way to the Congo Gorilla Forest featuring the Western Lowland Gorilla, Mandrill, and Okapi in an indoor and outdoor facility where gorillas interact and live. Check out the Children’s Zoo (closed during Winter months) where young and old can pet goats, sheep, or donkeys. Exhibits and activities for children along with affordable admission days make the Bronx Zoo the perfect NYC destination for kids!

Explore a Firehouse

The City of New York Fire Department (FDNY) offers Fire Zone, state-of-the-art fire-safety learning center at Rockefeller Center. Kids can climb a fire truck, try on firefighter gear, and even experience a simulated fire scene. Meeting a firefighter may be the highlight of the trip for many youngsters! General admission is free, but families can also experience a fire safety presentation, complete with simulation and materials to make a plan for safety in your own home. Cost for the presentation is $6.00 for adults and children and $2.00 for seniors. The presentation is recommended for children ages 5 and up.

Take a Ferry Ride

Take a free ride on the Staten Island Ferry for a premium view of the Manhattan skyline and some excellent photo opps for the kids. See the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the Brooklyn Bridge from your free seat on the ferry. You must get off the boat before heading back to Lower Manhattan, but Staten Island has a lot to offer for kids as well! The Staten Island Museum has free admission on Sneak Peek Tuesdays from 12-2 p.m. Children 12 and under are just $2 at other times. Enjoy museum exhibits of art and sports, and hands-on events for all ages (additional fees may apply). Next, visit the grounds of the Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Gardens. Visit an art museum, multiple gardens, the Visitor’s Center, the Neptune Fountain, and a beautiful amphitheater which hosts a variety of events. Grounds’ admission is free, and children 12 and under are admitted at no cost to the various centers and gardens. If your goal is just to get the view and ride the ferry, you can hop back on after deboarding, but Staten Island is also a treat to tour for many kids and adults alike!

4. Become a Junior Ranger: Junior Ranger programs are so fun for kids! You can pick up the packet at any visitor’s center and it’s filled with great activities to guide your day, like Junior Ranger Bingo, word searches and trivia.
