Real-life wellness without perfection.

Cholesterol As We Age: What I Actually Focus On

There’s a funny thing about getting older.

You stop chasing quick fixes and start paying attention to what actually helps you feel good in your body.

For me, supporting healthy cholesterol hasn’t come from dieting extremes, deprivation, or obsessing over every bite. It’s come from years of building habits that support strength, energy, mobility, and heart health.

And no, that doesn’t mean giving up dessert. 🍰

I Stopped Chasing Skinny and Started Chasing Strong

Science says: Muscle mass is closely tied to metabolic and overall healthy aging.

One of the biggest shifts I made was focusing on muscle.

Strength training became less about appearance and more about longevity, balance, metabolism, independence, and quality of life. Want ore on my thoughts on strength training? Here you go, good stuff.

Research consistently shows that maintaining muscle mass as we age supports overall metabolic health and healthy aging.

That’s why resistance training became one of my non-negotiables:

weights

resistance bands

machines

walking

movement I actually enjoy

Tiny reps.

Easy to make and packed with health benefits!

Garlicky Vinaigrette

The origination of this recipe comes from my dear French girlfriend who lives in Colorado. She’s taught me how to make her mother’s recipe, and I’ve adjusted a little just to make it a tad bit easier. But, essentially and for all practical purposes, this recipe is credited to a talented French chef, Marie Christine!

Garlic is good for you. Forget the aroma. Let’s look at the health benefits!

According to Everyday Health:

Garlic May Help Lower Blood Pressure.

Garlic May Help Quell Inflammation.

Garlic May Help Lower Cholesterol.

Garlic May Support Immune Function.

Garlic May Reduce Blood Clotting.

Garlic Provides a Host of Antioxidants

Salad Dressing with Mustard

Yes, pretty impressive and powerful health benefits. And, while the word ‘may’ is used, hey, it’s worth eating just to know you ‘may’ be receiving these benefits.

Now let’s talk mustard. Not just regular mustard. I’m talking a really good quality spicy stone ground mustard.

Learn how movement and nutrition help support healthy aging.

Aging Is Inevitable. Frailty Is Negotiable.

Everyone ages differently.

Genetics matter. Lifestyle matters. Health history matters. Life itself matters.

But research consistently shows that muscle, movement, balance, and nutrition play an important role in how we experience aging over time.

Strength training is not about stopping aging.

It is about supporting the body so we can stay more capable, resilient, mobile, and independent as we grow older.

Why Muscle Matters More With Age

Beginning around age 30, adults gradually lose muscle mass over time. This process tends to accelerate after 60 and especially after menopause for women.

Muscle supports much more than appearance.

It helps with:

balance

posture

bone support

mobilitymetabolic health

daily function

injury prevention

Research suggests that maintaining strength can improve quality of life and help preserve independence as we age.

Strength Training Does Not Need To Be Extreme

You do not need intense workouts or hours in the gym.

At 76, I feel stronger, clearer, and more energized than ever. Here’s what made the biggest difference: protein, strength training, sleep, stress, and skincare.

Yes, changes can start to surface as we head into our 70s and beyond. But, can we mitigate these changes. I say I’ll sure dang try to!

What Actually Made the Biggest Difference for Me After 70

There wasn’t one big breakthrough.

No magic supplement. No overnight change.

Just small, consistent decisions—stacked over time—that changed how I feel, how I move, and how I live.

And the payoff?

Energy. Strength. Clarity. Confidence.

Here’s what actually made the biggest difference.

Protein First Changed Everything

I stopped treating protein like an afterthought—and started building my meals around it.

As we age, we lose muscle mass (sarcopenia). Protein helps:

Maintain lean muscle

Support metabolism

Stabilize energy and blood sugar

Recipes that I’ve created with more protein

What I do:

Prioritize protein at every meal

Add simple boosts like bone broth protein, eggs, yogurt, and lean meats

Avoid under-eating

Science: Higher protein intake supports muscle preservation and metabolic health as we age.

Life Lessons Learned with Age: Healthy Habits That Paid Off

The habits that quietly paid off for decades

Not all good decisions feel important in the moment.

Some feel small. Practical. Easy to put off.

But over time, certain choices begin to echo forward—
in your health, your finances, your relationships, and your peace of mind.

At 76, these are the decisions that didn’t just help me then…
they built the life I’m living now.

Healthy Habits That Paid Off: I Never Smoked

This one decision eliminates a major long-term health risk. Yes habits you can choose that pay off later in life can be really challenging because I grew up in the 1960s when smoking was uber cool.

Smoking is strongly linked to heart disease, lung disease, and accelerated aging. Avoiding it gives your body a long-term advantage that compounds over time.

Protecting My Skin Early: I Respected the Sun

Enjoying the sun is one thing. Overexposure is another.

What I Know at 76 That I Wish I Knew Sooner

The psychology of growing older, wiser—and finally clearer.

There’s a quiet shift that happens as you age.

Not louder. Not busier. Clearer.

By the time you reach your 70s, life has a way of sanding down the noise. What’s left isn’t perfection—it’s truth. And often, it’s truth you wish you had trusted decades earlier.

These aren’t regrets. They’re refinements.

And psychology backs this up. As we age, we naturally become more selective, more emotionally grounded, and more focused on what truly matters—something researchers call Socioemotional Selectivity Theory.

Here’s what that looks like in real life.

Stop Performing for Approval

Many of us spend years shaping ourselves to be liked.

But approval is a moving target—it shifts depending on the people, the room, the moment.

Over time, you realize something freeing: authenticity requires far less energy than performance.

With age often comes greater self-acceptance.

Learn how to separate true sentimental treasures from clutter with simple, practical test.

Why It’s So Hard to Decide What to Keep When Downsizing

Downsizing sounds simple—until you’re standing there trying to decide what to keep.

Suddenly, everything feels “sentimental.” Every item seems tied to a memory, a person, or a version of your life you don’t want to lose. And that’s where most people get stuck.

If you’re struggling to decide what to keep when downsizing, the key isn’t getting more organized—it’s getting more honest about what actually holds meaning.

If you’re feeling stuck getting started, here are some simple ways to ease into movement with this post I’ve written.

In this post, you’ll learn how to separate true sentimental treasures from clutter using simple, practical tests—so you can let go with clarity, keep what matters most, and move forward without regret.

The Truth No One Tells You About “Sentimental”

Not everything we say is sentimental actually is. Sometimes it’s:

Guilt

Obligation

Fear of forgetting

“I paid good money for this” energy

Real sentimental items don’t shout.

It brings a quiet realization that a chapter of life has ended.

You’re not just going through things… you’re going through your life.

And for many people, downsizing after 50 begins stirring those same feelings earlier than expected. What starts as sorting through things quickly becomes something deeper… a process of revisiting a life filled with memories.

If you’re navigating this stage of life, you may also find it helpful to explore how simplifying other areas—like food and daily habits—can support this transition.

The Day You Realize a Chapter Has Ended: What to Do When Downsizing Feels Emotional

Downsizing after 60 often brings more than just a change in space. It brings a quiet realization that a chapter of life has ended.

There’s a moment in downsizing that no one really prepares you for. And, it doesn’t matter whether you downsize after 60 or downsize after 50!

It’s not the packing.
It’s not the moving.

It’s the quiet realization that a chapter of your life has ended.

The house feels different.

Simple science-backed strategies to challenge negative thoughts and stay on track with your goals.

Ever notice how a quiet debate can start in your mind before your feet even hit the floor?

One voice says:
Stay warm. Sleep. Start later.

Another voice says:
Get up. You’ll feel better if you go.

That inner dialogue is self-talk, and psychology research shows it strongly influences behavior, motivation, and habits. The voice we follow in those small moments often determines the direction of our day.Your Brain Is Wired for Comfort

Your Brain Is Wired for Comfort

Our brains evolved to conserve energy and avoid unnecessary effort. From a survival perspective, choosing rest over exertion made sense.

Today that same wiring can show up as thoughts like:

Skip it today.
You can do it later.
You deserve a break.

Science behind it

Behavioral scientists describe this as effort minimization and present bias. Studies in behavioral economics show humans tend to favor immediate comfort over future benefit, even when we know the long-term choice is better.
