My two stroke starts 1-2 kicks without much effort hot or cold it doesn’t care.  If it is cold, I use the choke and no choke is required if the engine is warm.   If it does not start in 4-5 kicks, I put in a new plug and it fires right up.

It’s simple easy. Maybe that’s why all the youth mx bikes through the 85′s are all two strokes.

Using the proper technique is very important to avoid the frustration of the no start situation.  Here’s some tips that will help you.

1. Stay off the gas.  Many 4 stroke’s have accelerator pumps in the carb, they pump in gas and will flood the engine.
2. Learn to feel when the engine’s piston is coming up on the compression stroke. (It will be hard to kick, most resistance.
3. Don’t have to kick it hard, just use a swift downward kick to get it started.
4. Throttle position is very important, it will take some time to get the feel for it.

Practice starting your bike hot and cold , you’ll get the hang of it.

Ever since Yamaha introduced the modern four stroke mx bike we can get into a great discussion.  Which engine is best for motocross.  Does the two stroke or the four stroke mx bike offer an great advantage for the average mx rider.  For my discussion we are going to look at the point of an older (57 +year old)  +50 class mx rider.  So what are the advantages of each, I will list them.

Two stroke advantage

1. Cheaper to maintain ( I did the top end on my 06 250sx KTM for $200, enough said)

2. Lighter bike

3. Easier on tires(mine seem to last  almost half a season)

Four stroke advantages

1. More horsepower

2. Easier to ride fast, and if you make a mistake just turn up the throttle.

3. Corner better.

The bikes that I am comparing are a 2006 KTM 250 SX and a 2008 Suzuki RMZ 450.

I am a died in wool KTM fan, my last four bikes have been KTM.

You can fine tune the power with ignition and carburation, but the camshaft is the real brains of the modern 4-stroke engine.   Cam design determines power output and characteristics  of the four stroke mx bike engine.   For decades one of the favorite methods of increasing an engine’s horsepower is to add a “hot cam”.  Hot Cams is a favorite supplier of horsepower and torque increasing cams for modern mx bikes.
