Unsung American hero: Jerry Parr

noreply@blogger.com (michaelfoxworth) — Sat, 10 Oct 2015 15:34:00 +0000

(CORONA) As reported by Martin Weil October 10 at 8:05 AM: "Jerry S. Parr, the quick-thinking and fast-moving Secret Service agent who was credited with saving the life of President Ronald Reagan after the 1981 assassination attempt in Washington, died Oct. 9 at a hospice center near his home in Washington. He was 85. The cause was congestive heart failure, said his wife, Carolyn Parr. Mr. Parr had been an electric power lineman before his Secret Service years and a clergyman in retirement. But he was best known for the fraught moments after gunfire erupted on March 30, 1981, as the president was leaving the Washington Hilton Hotel." ▶ STORY

When Dodgers left Brooklyn for LA

noreply@blogger.com (michaelfoxworth) — Wed, 07 Oct 2015 18:42:00 +0000

(CORONA) Our household is primarily an American League loyalist, hence Los Angeles Dodgers of Anaheim fans. But due to the Angele elimination from the 2015 MLB playoffs on the last day of the season, Oct. 4, we will gladly adopt the Los Angeles Dodgers as our local team, along with millions of others both here in California and well beyond.

Online sports gambling called out

noreply@blogger.com (michaelfoxworth) — Tue, 06 Oct 2015 16:19:00 +0000

(CORONA) The almost instant rise and widespread publicity and advertising for #DraftKings and #FanDuel almost guaranteed a certain conundrum: How could these online gaming (gambling) operations not become victims of their own success?

Swedish workday hours: 8 - 2 = 6

noreply@blogger.com (michaelfoxworth) — Sat, 03 Oct 2015 17:56:00 +0000

(CORONA) We live in a common interest development or homeowners association (HOA) in the Inland Empire of Southern California, near the usually congested freeway intersection of Interstates 91 and 15 that converge just east of Corona near the Temescal Valley. Because we are retired, we take special pains not to travel the local freeways during morning or evening rush hours. However, when that is not possible, we occasionally observe thousands on workday commutes and ask the question that follows in this post.

Truth about Rent vs Buy

noreply@blogger.com (michaelfoxworth) — Sat, 12 Sep 2015 15:52:00 +0000

(CORONA) We live in a common interest development or homeowners association (HOA) in the Inland Empire of Southern California, so we seldom see first-time home buyers moving into our community. Not true, of course, for the typical neighborhood. The topic under this title is of interest to millions today and millions more in the future. The factor of HOA dues is no small consideration for many home owners, not just those who are purchasing for the first time.

14 years of marking 9/11

noreply@blogger.com (michaelfoxworth) — Fri, 11 Sep 2015 15:04:00 +0000

(altacities.com) There is but one generation alive today that lacks vivid recall of this date and the day the world simply calls 9/11. Of course, that is the Gen-Zrs, those born after the year 2000. For the rest of us, particularly those living in the USA, the date usually surrounds the question: What were we doing on that date and at that fateful time?

#Coffee junkies take this to heart

As world beverages go, is there anything more popular than coffee?

According to this SOURCE, "Coffee is a brewed drink with a distinct aroma and flavor, prepared from roasted coffee beans, the seeds found inside "berries" of the Coffee plant. Coffee plants are cultivated in over 70 countries, primarily in the equatorial regions of the Americas, Southeast Asia, India and Africa.

"The two most commonly grown are the highly regarded arabica, and the less sophisticated but stronger and more hardy robusta. The latter is resistant to the coffee leaf rust, Hemileia vastatrix, but has a more bitter taste. Once ripe, coffee beans are picked, processed, and dried. Green (unroasted) coffee beans are one of the most traded agricultural commodities in the world. Once traded, the beans are roasted to varying degrees, depending on the desired flavor, before being ground and brewed to create the beverage."

News story: When journalists are

Will the ending or resolution of the Brian Williams story come within days, weeks, or perhaps longer? Certainly, in our lifetime, there is nothing like watching the media scramble to cover or expose their fellow practitioners. Broadcast journalists are all over the place with regard to this story and at times it seems that the story is getting more play than it deserves.

Flip②▶An animated trip to San Fransokyo

No, it's not a misprint, but if you're stumped by the post title, then you haven't read about or viewed the latest Disney blockbuster. The playbill for 'Big Hero 6' clearly promotes this 2014 holiday release as a kid-friendly action-comedy, but the mature themes interwoven are worthy of caution when considering children under age 13, even though very few critical reviews and press reports offer a caveat close to this one.

From Walt Disney Animation Studios, the team behind "Frozen" and "Wreck-It Ralph," comes "Big Hero 6," an action-packed comedy-adventure about the special bond that develops between Baymax, a plus-sized inflatable robot, and prodigy Hiro Hamada. When a devastating event befalls the city of San Fransokyo and catapults Hiro into the midst of danger, he turns to Baymax and his close friends adrenaline junkie Go Go Tomago, neatnik Wasabi, chemistry whiz Honey Lemon and fanboy Fred. Determined to uncover the mystery, Hiro transforms his friends into a band of high-tech heroes called "Big Hero 6."

In the Forbes account of the film, @ScottMendelson reports: "Walt Disney’s Big Hero 6 has crossed $100 million domestic on its tenth day, which makes it the fastest-grossing Disney animated (non-Pixar) film outside of Frozen (The Lion King was at $104m on its eleventh day, which was July 4th, 1994). The film dropped 35% on its second weekend, just a shade higher than Wreck it Ralph (-32% in weekend two) and earned $36.01m over its second weekend, which is the biggest second weekend gross for a Disney animated film ever.

No trivial matter: The USA financial crisis of 2008 (aka the "mortgage meltdown") The Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) became program of the United States government to purchase assets and equity from financial institutions to strengthen its financial sector that was signed into law by U.S. President George W. Bush on October 3, 2008. It was a component of the government's measures in 2008 to address the subprime mortgage crisis.

What is the 'Pineapple Express"?

noreply@blogger.com (michaelfoxworth) — Fri, 12 Dec 2014 18:43:00 +0000

Flip2▶Trivia♥WORTH ▶

As I noted in this Facebook clip, we are finally having a year-end "rainy season" in Southern California. Most of the rest of the USA doesn't understand or fully appreciate how much we welcome rain in LaLa Land. Given our former days in residence around places like Portland, Oregon, (early 70s), we have certainly seen a dearth of moisture for many of the 26 years we have lived in SoCal.

That brings us to the trivial question of our POST title: What is the 'Pineapple Express'?

USMC 239th Today! Semper Fi

noreply@blogger.com (michaelfoxworth) — Mon, 10 Nov 2014 22:21:00 +0000

http://goo.gl/26Yf76

This post is in tribute to my middle brother Bob, now 65, who served in the 1970s in Vietnam in the Marine Corps.

If you haven't noticed, this 'social current see' of many US military establishments makes it apparent that social sites like Facebook draw much attention to private and public concerns alike. Notable today, is the anniversary for the USMC. The United States Marine Corps is a branch of the United States Armed Forces responsible for providing power projection from the sea, using the mobility of the U.S. Navy to rapidly deliver combined-arms task forces.

According to this source, the U.S. Marine Corps is one of the four branches in the U.S. Department of Defense as well as one of the seven uniformed services of the United States. It operates posts on land and aboard sea-going amphibious warfare ships around the world. The Marine Corps has been a component of the U.S. Department of the Navy since 1834, working closely with naval forces for training, transportation, and logistics.

1WTC occupies NYC

noreply@blogger.com (michaelfoxworth) — Tue, 04 Nov 2014 17:54:00 +0000

One World Trade Center is the name of two buildings. It most commonly refers to the primary building of the new World Trade Center complex in Lower Manhattan, New York City, and the tallest skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere. The 94-story super-tall structure, which shares a name with the northern Twin Tower in the original World Trade Center that was destroyed in the September 11 attacks, stands on the northwest corner of the 16-acre World Trade Center site, on the site of the original 6 World Trade Center. ~ WIKIPEDIA

"Last week, as workers took down some of the final construction fences from around One World Trade Center and five trucks full of office furniture arrived, the question wasn’t so much how the $3.2 billion project could save downtown New York, but whether it could bring it up another level." ~ Jonathan O’Connell / The Washington Post

'Although I've viewed a few documentaries on this amazing reconstruction over the years this story is brought together in a very comprehensible composition in this presentation. It is a great story of resolve culminating in a project that is a living monument for all Americans to be proud. Further, it's a lasting documentation of the collaboration, strength and bravery of all who played a part in this mammoth undertaking." ~ L. Young

Whatever happened to @HiddenCash?

Hidden Cash is a movement founded by Jason Buzi and Yan Budman using the Twitter account of the same name. On May 22, 2014, Hidden Cash began hiding money in San Francisco, CA and tweeting out clues using the handle. Followers are encouraged to tweet a photo of themselves with the money they find, and Hidden Cash retweets these. Within a week, the group expanded to Los Angeles, and the account gained national and international media attention, and hundreds of thousands of followers.

Bloomberg gets another title (of sorts)

noreply@blogger.com (michaelfoxworth) — Tue, 07 Oct 2014 01:44:00 +0000

The "sort-of" attribution is explained because non-Commonwealth (British) citizens only receive honorary knighthoods; they cannot use a title and are not dubbed on the shoulder with a sword or draped around the neck with a medal, which is instead simply handed to them. The title of "Sir" will not apply in this case. According to this SOURCE, Bloomberg is the 12th American to be knighted by Queen Elizabeth.
