Tegan and Sara Release 'The Con X: Covers' Album (ft. Hayley Williams, CHVRCHES, PVRIS)

2017-10-20T00:37:00.001-04:00

To commemorate the tenth anniversary of their fifth studio album The Con, Tegan and Sara have released their highly-anticipated, The Con X: Covers album.

The album features contributions from Hayley Williams, CHVRCHES, PVRIS and Grimes.

“We wanted the proceeds to go to our recently launched Tegan and Sara Foundation, which raises money for self-identified women and girls in the LGBTQ community,” said Tegan Quin in a recent press release. “With that intention set, we asked 14 artists who were either outspoken allies of the LGTBQ community or LGBTQ themselves to each cover a song from The Con, in any fashion they saw fit. All the artists agreed to donate their time and energy to the project and their labels all agreed to waive their fees as well. We are beyond grateful for the contributions of each artist, and we hope fans of The Con will be moved by their interpretations.”

ATP! Live Review: PVRIS with Lights and Flint Eastwood - 10/16/2017

2017-10-18T09:52:00.000-04:00

At the merch table before the show, I grabbed a PVRIS shirt, while my friend, having never listened to any of the bands before, picked out a Flint Eastwood one because it looked cool. After she bought it, she said, “Well, I sure hope this band isn’t terrible.” Luckily for her, Flint Eastwood was awesome.

I’d never heard her music before, but I’ll certainly be listening now. She came out with immediate presence and threw her all into her songs, getting people to sing along and calling out the ones sitting stone-faced. Her music is insanely catchy and makes you want to dance. I’m excited to hopefully hear them everywhere in the future.

Up next was Lights, an artist I’ve heard a ton about, but hadn’t listened to a lot before her latest album. Dedicated fans in the crowd had bright red hair to match her and were dressed up in cosplay as the character of her Skin&Earth graphic novel.

She genuinely seemed like the sweetest person while on stage, taking time to sign a fan’s shirt and calling out the red hair she saw. While she seems soft-spoken while talking, her voice is a powerhouse when she’s singing. Her range is outstanding and everything she sang sounded perfect. She played mostly new songs, but she definitely made me want to check out her older stuff.

PVRIS came out with a bang, starting with “Heaven” and an awesome stage background, the lights and images on screens perfectly evoking the feel of their music. They played a good mix of old and new songs in the first half, with the middle featuring only Lynn and guitarist Alex Babinski on stripped-down versions of “Same Soul” and “White Noise.” A highlight of the show, Lynn’s ethereal vocals soared.

Lynn also inspired one of the most epic concert sing-alongs I’ve ever been a part of. As a joke before “What’s Wrong” she asked if we could sing a part, and started singing the first lines of “All Star” by Smash Mouth—and then the crowd sang the full first verse and chorus. The band cracked up and Lynn said, “Wow, I thought that was gonna last two seconds. I’ve never done acid, but I imagine it would be something like that.”

They powered through the rest of the set, ending with “My House” before the encore, “No Mercy.” One of my favorite songs off the new album, I was glad to see everyone else loving it as much as I did. It seemed to be where everyone, including the band, absolutely let loose and went nuts, with Lynn coming into the crowd towards the end.

Before the band left the stage, they started playing “All Star” over the speakers, laughing as they walked off with the crowd singing all the words until they made their way out the doors.

ATP! Album Review: Lights - Skin&Earth

2017-09-27T23:46:00.000-04:00

Lights’ newest undertaking was already impressive before listening to it. A concept album that ties in with a comic series that she also wrote and drew? That’s pretty intense. And a downright awesome idea. Lights is truly going all out for this and it definitely shows.

The Canadian electro-pop star's voice has always had this atmospheric, ethereal sound to it and the concept and songs on Skin&Earth take it to new heights. “Morphine” and album closer “Almost Had Me” are as beautifully haunting as they come, while still somehow making you want to dance (or at least tap your toes) at parts.

“Kicks” seems to be made for blasting with the windows down, with all your friends singing along on a summer road trip. “Until the Light” and “Fight Club” are some of the strongest songs on the album, while lead single “Giants” and “Moonshine” are anthemic tracks that belong on an epic movie soundtrack somewhere, if they aren’t on one already.

The album flows well and tells a story on its own, even without the comics figured in. It’s a solid, cohesive work, which is something that seems to have become rare in a world fueled by singles and streaming.

Without the comic and everything else, there would still be a great album here. But it’s Lights’ dedication to her art and this vision that elevate this even more. Personally, I’d love to see these songs on a soundtrack all their own—in a Skin&Earth movie. The story and album seem like they’re made for it and it would be amazing to see Lights’ artistic vision go even further with this world.

ATP! Album Review: PVRIS - All We Know Of Heaven, All We Need Of Hell

2017-08-28T23:31:00.000-04:00

White Noise is one of those albums that I can listen to at any time and still love it just as much as the first time I heard it. It never gets old. When PVRIS announced their new album, I was excited, but wondered how it was possible that I could love this album as much as White Noise. And then I heard AWKOHAWNOH and realized I was an idiot for even having doubts.

This is, hands down, the best album so far this year. It balances pop with this dark and eerie sound that only PVRIS seem to know how to accomplish. The whole album just feels epic. Lynn’s voice embodies the heaven versus hell balance of the album—her soft and sweet vocals giving way to gravelly screams.

This album finds them incorporating and experimenting with some new sounds musically. Some songs feel like they lean more towards pop and then will twist into a PVRIS that’s heavier and darker than before. “No Mercy” is a great example of this. The lyrical content seems to stray from the hypothetical monsters that were the main focus on the last album. Everything here feels a bit more real. And it makes sense. The band members have grown older, gone through more. Songs like “Anyone Else” really make you feel like the band are baring a part of their soul. “What’s Wrong” and “Nola 1” hit hard, dealing with things like anxiety and depression.

Lynn posted a long note on her Instagram about the album that ended with, “All that matters is that you are feeling.” And you definitely feel with this album. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions, but that’s what life is, right? And what a beautiful rollercoaster PVRIS has made it out to be. They make even the hardest moments sound like magic.

I could probably go on endlessly finding new things to say about AWKOHAWNOH. But I’ll end it with this: If you’re going to buy one album this year, make it this one.

Taylor Swift Unveils "Look What You Made Me Do" Music Video

2017-08-28T09:45:00.001-04:00

Taylor Swift unveiled the music video for her new single,"Look What You Made Me Do" at last night's MTV VMAs.

Starting out in a graveyard zooming in on Swift's grave, a zombie Taylor (reminiscent of Michael Jackson's "Thriller") crawls out, soon flashing to a very much alive Swift in a bathtub full of diamonds -- and that's only the beginning. The rest of the video sees Swift in a variety of settings, from a throne of slithering snakes to a car crash, with perhaps the most alarming coming toward the end: a pile of her old personas.

Just as she indicates with the line "I'm sorry, the old Taylor can't come to the phone right now/ Why? Oh, because she's dead" in "Look What You Made Me Do," Swift literally sits atop a bunch of old Taylors, like the nerdy girl from her "You Belong With Me" video and her Red Tour ringmaster getup. Holding true to her shout-out to the haters in the song, Swift took things one step further once the song was over.

"What's with that bitch?," "You are so fake," "There she goes playing victim again" -- all things the old Taylors tell the new one in the end, solidifying the bold message she's sending with her latest single. And to top it all off, one more (very familiar) shout-out to a particular hater: "I would very much like to be excluded from this narrative."

"Look What You Made Me Do" is the first single from Swift's forthcoming sixth album, Reputation, which will be released Nov. 10 and is the follow-up to 2014's album of the year winner, 1989.

Fifth Harmony Release New Self-Titled Album

2017-08-25T08:34:00.000-04:00

The wait is over: Fifth Harmony’s self-titled third album is finally here!!

Fifth Harmony represents a new era for the pop foursome. It’s their first album without Camila Cabello, who departed the group in December, and its the sound of a band "really experimenting with a lot of different sounds,” explained Ally Brooke Hernandez ahead of its release (she also described it as a mix of “strong pop melodies” and “dark urban sounds," which you can now hear for yourself).

The followup to 2016’s 7/27, Fifth Harmony includes the single “Down," featuring Gucci Mane, the latest track "Sauced Up" and can be streamed in full below.

Taylor Swift Releases New Single "Look What You Made Me Do"

2017-08-25T08:27:00.003-04:00

After three teasers, an album cover reveal and countless snake emojis, the wait is finally over: Taylor Swift has officially dropped her new single, "Look What You Made Me Do."

As promised, the singer released her fresh tune promptly at midnight Friday on iTunes (Aug. 25). Unlike previous Swift singles, "Look What You Made Me Do" is fairly dark, both sonically and lyrically. Foreboding synths, eerie piano chords and a skittering beat rub up against old-timey sounds as Swift sings about karma, people who "laugh when they lie" and a list of names that she keeps.

"The world moves on another day, another drama-drama, but not for me, not for me, all I think about is karma," she says in a half-rapped tone, reminiscent of Fergie, at one point. "Maybe I got mine but you'll all get yours."

"Look What You Made Me Do" is the first single from Swift's forthcoming sixth album, Reputation, which will be released Nov. 10 and is the follow-up to 2014's album of the year winner, 1989.

Demi Lovato Announces New Album 'Tell Me You Love Me'

2017-08-24T22:30:00.003-04:00

Wednesday afternoon, Demi Lovato revealed her sixth studio album, titled Tell Me You Love Me, will be released Sept. 29, sharing a taste of the title track and what's presumably the album art in a post on social media. Pre-order for the set goes up at midnight.

A black and white video features Lovato singing in the recording studio as it zooms out from her eyeball to show what appears to be album artwork featuring the pop star making a somewhat pouting face and holding her hayrack with her hands. In it, we hear her powerful voice singing, "Tell me you love me, I need someone on days like this I do/ On days like this/ Oh, can you hear my heart say oh oh oh oh oh."

The new album will likely include Lovato's single "Sorry Not Sorry," which she released last month.

Taylor Swift Announces New Album 'Reputation'; First Single Coming Today

2017-08-24T09:47:00.005-04:00

It's really happening. After the long wait and numerous snake-related teases, Taylor Swift has confirmed her new album, Reputation, is coming Nov. 10. But fans won't have to wait that long to hear new music from the pop queen – the first single drops Thursday (Aug. 24). Swift also revealed the album cover art (shot by Mert & Marcus) for her sixth album via Instagram on Wednesday (Aug. 23).

Even though it's been nearly three years since Swift's 1989 -- which won the Album of the Year Grammy -- she hasn't been a stranger to the charts. Her 2016 Zayn duet "I Don't Want to Live Forever" from Fifty Shades Darker peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, just one spot shy of becoming her fifth No. 1. But with anticipation building for a new Taylor Swift single since she wiped her social media accounts last Friday (Aug. 18), could this new single become her next No. 1 -- potentially unseating the historic No. 1 run of "Despacito" from Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber? We'll have to wait and see.

ATP! Album Review: Kesha - Rainbow

2017-08-13T21:29:00.000-04:00

After the past years of hardship, it’s awesome to see Kesha come roaring back with an amazing album, one that lets you see more of who she is behind the party swagger that defined her previous music. Rainbow is a force to be reckoned with, an album filled with anthems, hymns, and, yes, a song about Godzilla. Kesha is still out- there and fabulous, but she’s showing a new side to herself, too. And what a side it is.

First single, “Praying,” provided a beautiful introduction to this, and is still one of the best and most emotional songs on the album. I still can’t listen to it without getting tears in my eyes. “Finding You” and “Learn To Let Go” keep the emotions high, while “Woman” and “Hymn” are powerful anthems ready to be turned into concert sing- alongs. “Woman” also proves that every song is catchier with an epic horns section.

Kesha uses this album to experiment with both her rock and country sides. It wouldn’t be surprising to see her come back with a full album of either. She pulls off both phenomenally well. Two songs here are accompanied by Eagles of Death Metal and there’s a duet with Dolly Parton. “Hunt You Down” and “Boots” bring a bit of the country as well, but they’re both Kesha at her catchiest. Kesha isn’t the party girl you’ve seen on past albums, but she still knows how to have a hell of a good time.

The closing tracks, “Godzilla” and “Spaceship” are a little out there, but both hide a deeper meaning under their slightly wacky exteriors. “Godzilla” talks about being in love with the iconic monster—serving as a sort of metaphor for seeing something in someone that others don’t see. “Spaceship” really talks about death, and Kesha going back to space when she’s gone. It’s fitting, really, that she would want to go to space and the song feels right. It’s actually quite beautiful.

But a review of Rainbow wouldn’t be complete without discussing the title track. It serves as many things—but the greatest being Kesha learning how to love life and music again after everything she’s been through. She gives hope to everyone, saying that no matter what they’ve been through, they’ll find a rainbow too. And that’s what this album represents. Hope, love, and being happy with the person you are.

Camila Cabello Releases Two New Songs "Havana" and "OMG"

2017-08-04T21:49:00.003-04:00

Camila Cabello is back with not just one, but two fiery, new tracks to turn up the summer heat. On Thursday (Aug. 3) the singer released “Havana” featuring Young Thug and “OMG” featuring Quavo, both of which the former Fifth Harmony member began teasing with nostalgic drive-in-movie visuals earlier this week.

“Havana” is a sexy, downbeat track, chronicling a romance that found Cabello’s heart left down south as she yearns, “Half of my heart is Havana,” and Young Thug offers a sing-song verse in condolence.

While “Havana” radiates a Latin flare, “OMG” feels like Cabello’s first hip-hop heavy song, slowed down with an atmospheric bass beneath a smooth, rap-like croon from Cabello and Quavo’s magic touch.

Jaden Smith Confirmed to Support Fall Out Boy on North American Fall Tour

2017-07-28T21:54:00.001-04:00

Jaden Smith is the son of one of the most famous actors of a generation. He has dabbled in music and modeling, where he has proven himself to be a sometimes-compelling rapper and a more frequently compelling fashion plate. He could probably get any important cultural figure on the phone in the amount of time it takes for the rest of us to wait in line for a salad. Yet, Smith has made plans for the fall, and they might not be what you expect: Starting in mid-October, he will open a month-long run of dates on Fall Out Boy’s American arena tour. It is a classic Pete Wentz move.

The news was announced Friday (July 28) along with the video for the band’s recent single “Champion,” which also features Smith in some bad virtual reality trip.

Jaden has dropped a few new official singles recently: the stomping “Watch Me” and the moodier, “Jumpman”-referencing “Batman,” the video for which features the same white Batman costume he wore to Kim & Kanye’s wedding.

Fall Out Boy will be heading out in support of M A N I A (out September 15) this fall. Dates can be found below.
