Should you or shouldn’t you get maternity photos done? Yes, yes, and yes! Get both the maternity and the newborn photos done!

When I look for photos myself when I was pregnant with my two boys, I can only find one or two. It makes me sad because both of these photos are when I pregnant for a second time and my older son is in the photos. None of just me, none of just me pregnant for the first time. Even though maternity clothing has changed for the better (think shapeless dresses, overalls, weird jeans), sometimes you still feel like getting your photograph taken while pregnant is the last thing you want to do. Believe me, no matter how you may be feeling you will look beautiful in the photos!

The maternity session can be included in a package with newborn photo sessions. Both of these sessions will make you smile years later when you go back and look at the photos from that time!

Newborn sessions for the summer | Boston Newborn Photographer

Even though times are different and kind of crazy and strange babies are still being born, families still loving each other and we all need more smiles. During the pandemic I have decided to only hold my photo sessions (newborn, maternity, family, senior) outdoors. I will be masked and will help find a location that is socially distant from other people so you and your family won’t need a mask for the photos. I want to make sure everyone is safe and feels comfortable during the photo sessions. Since I’m not in your home my newborn photo sessions will be little different – they will still be focused on these newest member of your family, but will be a lifestyle session instead of the posed ones inside. I’m looking forward to meeting your newborn!

Maternity session | Amara Cohen Photography | Brookline, MA

The saying goes, “April showers bring May flowers.” But April showers can be a little iffy for an outdoor maternity session. It was raining half an hour before we were set to meet for the session, called to see if we should proceed and decided to go for it (due date is approaching and don’t want to keep pushing the session to a later date). For the hour we walked around Larz Anderson park taking photos and chatting the skies were cloudy but with a pretty light to the sky. Said our goodbyes and headed home. I think I made it 3 minutes down the road and it started to rain again. I still can’t believe we managed the photos for the one full hour of dry weather that day, thank you skies!

I love the cloudy skies this time of year – with the greens and different color flowers that are just starting to bloom – makes for some dramatic photos!

It’s time to get back to sharing with you all the wonderful families I’ve been photographing lately. I’ve been trying to find the time to put out some blog posts but somehow it ends up low on the list – after getting the session completed and photos sent to the families. I really love going to the homes of my clients and meeting their newborn babies, capturing their pure joy and love over something so small and new! I get to spend a few hours holding and photographing their new baby, and then I come home and smile at the emotions I was able to capture for them!

35 Days Old and Watching It All | Boston, MA Newborn Photographer

When I am asked when it’s best to photograph a newborn I tend to answer between 5-18 days old, as they are still sleeping much of the time and like to curl up, making posing and taking their photographs much easier. I have to say that when I get an “older” newborn, as I did with this guy at 35 days, it is a whole different and amazing experience. They are starting to interact and make eye contact, which makes the photographs feel different. This guy did end up sleeping for some of the photos, but it didn’t last long as he wanted to watch a lot of what was going on.

Happy 1st Birthday | Boston MA Child and Family Photographer

What a special treat I got during my photo session yesterday – not only did I meet a wonderful family, but I spent most of the time laughing. This little boy would make anyone laugh! His laugh was so amazing that I had trouble keeping my camera steady from all of my laughing. Thank you to this beautiful family for letting me capture a special moment for them.

Cake Smash Fun | Boston Child and Family Photographer

First birthdays are fun (sometimes stressful and usually exhausting). I actually have a photo from after my son’s first birthday party, my son and husband are napping like they got hit by a bulldozer! As a photographer I love capturing a little bit of a little one’s first birthday. Now I’m not usually at the actual party just getting some photos of a cake smash on a different day. Even these can be e exhausting and overwhelming to the birthday child – all that getting messy and trying sugar, but well worth it!

Newborn love | Boston Newborn and Family Photographer

I know, I know, how many times can I use “newborn love”, but it really never gets old and doesn’t matter the newborn. Every newborn I meet I fall in love with – those tiny hands and feet, the lips, the eyes, the smell – all amazing! I find myself holding a newborn and catching a glimpse of one of my boys as a newborn (and man that feels like a lifetime ago), so no it will never get old falling in love with a newborn. I mean, come on, how can you not sigh deeply and smile slightly when you see these little ones?

Sometimes getting to photograph an older newborn has definite advantages – look at how much he interacted with me. He was making eye contacting and reacting with smiles to me – I fell in love immediately!
Love, love photographing the new parents and just watching them watch their new baby (that’s when they forget I’m taking their picture).
