Perfectionistic Tendencies

If you're a perfectionist, you can probably relate with my feelings: I like to get things done perfectly, first try, no mistakes, and way before deadline. How often does that actually happen? Well, ok...never. But I still try-it's a bit of an obsession really.

That's why what Mark Earley shared during devotions this week at Ambassador really struck a cord with me-and perhaps you'll feel the same. To get the full impact, click here to listen to what he shared. But as a recap, he basically explained that the first half of his life, he was dedicated to doing things right. The second half, he's committed to loving right.

It's really not as easy as it sounds. Loving "right" means we have such a robust worldview, that it impacts every aspect of our lives. We'll be so contagious, others will want what we have. That's when real change takes place in communities ...and in the end, that's all that really matters. Not perfection by transformation.

That's the point Chuck Colson also shared earlier this week at the Reagan Library. He explained that transformation doesn't happen because of external factors...but because of an internal change that occurs when broken people discover the unconditional love and grace of Jesus Christ.

That's what the work of Prison Fellowship is all about...and as I evaluate what I wanted my life to be marked by, I find myself wanting the same thing. It's all about having the right world view, which is the only catalyst for a changed life that impacts the world for Jesus Christ.

Does sponsorship really work?

It's a question we never think to ask - because we know first-hand that sponsoring a child through Compassion does work! (Ask us how many total children are sponsored by our staff)

After a full day of meeting Compassion radio team members Lee Geysbeek and Krissy Thomas, our team left fully energized with a renewed commitment to release children from poverty...in Jesus' name.

What A Treat!

It was a great day at Ambassador yesterday as we shared in fellowship with our good friend, Trace Thurlby from the Bott Radio Network. But the celebration of his visit started long before he came through our doors in the afternoon--it started about 30 seconds after the delivery of some incredible pastries Trace had sent earlier that morning: Lemon, Blueberry and Apricot. It doesn't get much better than that!

Great friends and delicious treats! Needless to say, both the desserts and our time with Trace made the day an incredible one here on Langley!

Grace to You Visits Ambassador

Having made a trip to So Cal last week to see my family, I was able to spend time at the Ambassador office, too. For a few days, I had my old life back--commuting to and from Irvine, talking with Peg and the team in person, eating fresh donuts brought in by Jim :-), and enjoying all the other benefits of working in an office with my co-workers (and friends).

Another benefit (and highlight) of my time in Irvine was participating in a meeting with our Grace to You friends, Jay Flowers and his assistant, Amanda Thompson. The meeting was both insightful and promising, especially as we learned of many exciting projects on the horizon.

Before our meeting, though, we gathered for staff devotions where Jay shared an update on the ministry as well as provided each staff person with a copy of John MacArthur's latest book, The Jesus You Can't Ignore.

We were also treated to a picture slide show of Jay's recent travels to Florida to see the Discovery space shuttle launch. It was fun to get an inside view of NASA and hear about the two astronauts who have an affinity with the ministry. The launch was scrubbed several times during Jay's visit (due to inclement weather) so he wasn't able to witness it firsthand. He did, however, accomplish what he intended--that was to provide ministry support to the astronauts leaving on their mission.

We certainly enjoyed our fellowship time with the team from Grace to You. Looking forward to more of that soon. I only hope it's the next time I'm in So Cal :-).

Emilie Barnes Visits Ambassador

It's always so nice when Emilie Barnes drops in to visit or record her "Keep It Simple" vignettes. Here she is getting ready to record upcoming programs!

Emilie, like all the rest of us, is a very busy person! She's a speaker, best-selling author (over 70 books!), wife, grandmother, and homemaker! So how does she stay on top of everything? Simple - by being organized!

Did I hear you groan? Are you thinking you don't have time to get organized, let alone stay organized? Emilie has found easy ways to simplify everything she does, including being organized. How?

Two of her favorite sayings are, "Don't put it down, put it away," and "Don't pile it, file it." It's really easy, and doesn't take much time. If everything has a place (if it isn't important enough for a place, throw it out) then make sure you put it where it belongs instead of piling it somewhere. For example, when the mail comes in, sort it, and put it where it goes (magazines, bills, etc.). Don't pile it!

You will feel so much better when you have conquered the clutter, and when you can actually find what you're looking for!

"Let's go!" With that closing challenge from Al Sanders to each of us at Ambassador in today's staff devotions, we were treated from Jude with the words of Michael the Archangel! In this stimulating study (to say the least!)-we were reminded dramatically of what happened when Lot's wife decided to "turn around-to look back."

As I watched and listened and wrote some personal notes to myself from today's study-I also observed Al's message as an incredible tutorial in presentation:

he began and ended on time
he was thoroughly prepared
he used illustrations, stories, humor and information to captivate our attention
he used drama to keep our attention focused
he looked us in the eye; at one point directly addressing our staff member who joins us via the Internet

So. . .what are we waiting for! "Let's go!"

Salem Visitors

Thrilled to have visitors from Salem at our office in Irvine. It was our pleasure to welcome Ed Atsinger, Ron Walters, David Evans and Travis Messer on Wednesday as they had a tour of our facility and met Ambassador staff!
