Recap: Casey’s Shocking Near Elimination

Wednesday night’s “American Idol” performance show started with a recap of the shocking events of last week’s elimination show. We saw Casey voted off and for the first time, really got a look at how the judges and other contestants responded to the news. We then went back to an hour before the show and heard Casey say there was no way they’d use the save. Luckily for him, and all of us, he was wrong. The question on everyone’s mind was what kind of performance he would bring to the table just one week after he nearly went home.

So... what's up with Seacrest's hair?

Introducing the Top 11 (Redux)

Because I’m sure none of us remembered how much pressure the contestants were under, Ryan reminded us all. Casey was saved last week so Thursday would mean a double elimination. What I want to know, though, is what the heck was up with Ryan’s hair? Was he in a rush to get to the stage? I know he has a billion jobs, but honestly – if he’s missing hair and makeup, maybe he should cut back on the workload. Regardless, he introduces the top eleven for the second week in a row. By the end of the night, we’ll be down to the top nine with two contestants going home. It’s a scary night, indeed.

For me, this is the most exciting theme yet.

The Theme: Songs by Elton John

The theme for the night’s performances was “Songs by Elton John”. I have to say, I was excited about this. It’s a shame Paul couldn’t have done “I Guess Why They Call It the Blues” again because that has, thus far, been my favorite performance he’s done on the live show. I was, once again, concerned for Scotty, but overall, I was excited. Elton is one of my favorite musicians. He embodies performance and passion. His music lends itself perfectly to this kind of competition.

The Performances: The Not-So-Fantastic

Once again this week, no one turned in a bad performance, but there were a few that didn’t really stand out as much as the others which, at this stage in the game, can mean getting sent home. I love Thia and I love Stefano, but the time the show ended, I couldn’t really remember their performances. Stefano’s “Tiny Dancer” was vocally beautiful and he did connect with the audience (and number one fan, Jennifer) a bit more, but after ending up in the bottom three last week, he really needed to wow us, and he just didn’t. Thia put a lot of emotion into her rendition of ‘Daniel’, but I don’t feel she made any sort of impact with the song itself. I feel like she took huge strides forward last week by giving us a little personality but with this performance, she took three leaps back.

The Performances: The Safe Bets

Of course, after last weeks near-elimination of early favorite Casey, we know no one is safe, but there are performers we know are going to turn in a great performance each time they take the stage. Jacob’s rendition of “Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word” wasn’t my favorite performance of the evening, but was incredible all the same. I got chills. I also got chills from Pia, whose performance of “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me” was just flat out ridiculous. I’m still hoping to see her pick up the tempo, but this was a beautiful performance. James’ “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting” was my favorite of her performances of his thus far. He was energetic, hypnotizing to watch and stayed on key through the entire song. Fantastic.

Casey Abrams – the man who shouldn’t have been saved because there should never have been a need to save him. He showed us a kinder, gentler, less hairy Casey and it worked. His performance of “Your Song” showed off more vocal range and a lot less intensity. As much as I love bluesy, gutsy Casey, this was his best move to stay in the game. Scotty stayed true to himself with “Country Comfort” and he nailed it. Each time he hits the stage he seems to show off a little more range which is what I think will keep him in the show. Lauren also showed us a more tender side with her version of “Candle In the Wind”. She gave it her own unique flavor, but she also reminded us all that there’s a giant voice in her tiny body.

Naima likely costs herself the competition, but stays true to her artistic vision.

Where America and I Will Disagree

I loved Naima’s performance of “I’m Still Standing”. I absolutely loved it. I also think it will secure her ticket home on tonight’s elimination, but I’m not sure that’s a bad thing. If she wins, she’ll have so many people telling her what to do and what style she should be, she’ll lose all of her flavor and everything that makes her special. I’d like to think that won’t be the case with Jimmy Iovine at the helm, but under an Idol contract, I’m sure that wouldn’t be the case. Naima is, unfalteringly her own artist and I think that’s admirable. Paul’s “Rocket Man” will also likely be widely shunned and he could easily find himself on the way out, but just like Naima, I think that would be the best thing for him.

Standout Performance

Holy Haley! I loved Haley Reinhart in her audition, I loved her last week but in the time between, I was pretty up and down with her. A few times, I’ve found myself hoping she would go home, but let me tell you this – she shut my skeptical mouth tonight. That was without a doubt the best performance of the night for me. I loved the arrangement of the song. She looked gorgeous and she sounded incredible. How that she’s found her stride, Haley is definitely a contender. It blows my mind that some people didn’t love this performance.

Overall, I felt good about Wednesday’s episode. There were some truly standout performances that I really believe could make serious contenders out of those who have been only mediocre so far. Some favorites slipped further down the list for me, though. I loved seeing the contestants doing their Entertainment Weekly photo shoot. While others don’t feel all of that is necessary, I think it helps prepares the contestants for what they’ll be getting into if they become pop stars.

The Bottom Three?

What everyone really wants to know, though, is who is going home. As always, I have my predictions but after last week, I’m not feeling quite as confident. I loved Naima’s performance and I’m confident she has a long career in music ahead of her. I’m just not sure America will like her rendition of “I’m Still Standing” as much as I did. Thia, well, Thia just isn’t the strongest singer or the strongest performer in the competition. Finally, Paul is my favorite guy in the competition with no chance of winning. I call him that for a reason. I’m not sure how he has managed to avoid the bottom three so far. I’d hate to see him go, but as I pointed out earlier, I don’t think he has to worry about not making it in the industry. I think Naima and Thia will be the two to go, sadly.

Part Two: Elimination Night

Two of these contestants went home.

With a recap of Wednesday night’s performances set to sad piano music, you knew it was going to be an emotional night. We’re told we “won’t believe who goes home”. I made a vow that if Casey went home tonight, I’d stop watching Idol and I meant it. No matter who goes home, though, it will be a tough night. It’s hard saying goodbye to just one contestant, but two? Definitely going to be a dramatic night.

Ryan starts the night’s show off in typically dramatic fashion. He once again reminds us two people will be going home but also gives us a bit of good news. Wednesday night saw an incredible 50 million votes cast – more than twice the amount of votes cast last week. In fact, the amount of votes was a record for Idol at this point in the show. Pretty impressive.

Performance One: Lauren and Scotty – “I Told You So”

Instead of starting the night off with a single group performance, there were several contestant performances throughout the show. Scotty and Lauren kicked things off with a sweet duet and they sounded lovely together. I blame their lack of chemistry on nerves which must have been kicked into high gear for both contestants. Scotty stuck to the low notes where he’s most comfortable, but their voices really complimented each other.

Results: Round One

Immediately following their performance, Scotty and Lauren were called to the center of the stage. If you were expecting another upset, you didn’t get it here with both Lauren and Scotty avoiding the bottom three once again.

Ford Commercial/Music Video: The American Idols – “Kryptonite”

I didn’t like the American Idol version of “Kryptonite” (one of my favorite songs), but I enjoyed the commercial. It was fun and lighthearted like “Val Kilmer” from a few weeks ago. It was a vast improvement over last week’s video. I loved the contestants as super heroes – especially Naima. Probably my favorite one of these glorified commercials so far.

After the Ford Commercial Ryan took a moment or two to talk with the contestants. First up was a discussion about Casey’s now trimmed beard and hair. I personally liked Casey’s look as it was, but he looks good a little more cleaned up too, and he seems happy with it as well. Next was a discussion about fan mail. If you follow any of the contestants on Twitter, you’ve probably already seen some of the things they’ve received from fans, but James’ gift definitely took the cake.

Performance Two: Jacob and Naima – “Solid”

At first, Jacob and Naima seemed like strange duet partners, but they sounded great together, had a lot of energy and did the Ashford and Simpson song justing. I really enjoyed it. Sadly I knew their performance meant they were next up for results and I had a bad feeling about where that was headed.

Results: Round Two

Despite last week’s shocking upset, I had a pretty good feeling there was no chance of Jacob winding up in the bottom three; especially considering last night’s performance. I was right. Although I love Naima and didn’t want to see her go home, Jacob has a real shot and taking this all the way to the end, and I don’t feel Naima does. Jacob is sent back to the safe seats while Naima takes the first of the “bottom three” chairs.

Performance Three: Fantasia – “Collard Greens and Corn Bread”

I have never been Fantasia’s biggest fan, but I liked her performance last night. I liked her advice to the contestants even more. While it might have been a little rambling, I thought it was excellent advice. I hope the contestants listened closely. While some of the contestants have already started showing signs the pressure may be getting to them, a good support system outside of their fellow contestants will make all the difference.

Performance Four: Thia, Haley and Pia – “Teenage Dream”

I didn’t like this performance. It just didn’t sit right with me. It’s always hard for American Idol contestants to cover current songs and I just think the ladies missed their mark. Plus, “The Dalton Academy Warblers” have already turned in the perfect cover of this song in their first appearance on “Glee”.

Results: Round Three

With two spots remaining in the bottom three, I was nervous when Pia was told she was safe following her performance with Thia and Haley, leaving Haley and Thia still awaiting their fate. As I mentioned in “Part One”, I’m not Thia’s biggest fan. I think she should be amazing, but she held back on us. Haley, on the other hand, is quickly becoming my favorite girl in the competition and I was concerned her last two performances, incredible as they were, wouldn’t be enough to keep her around. My fears were put to rest as Haley was given a spot back among the safe and Thia was sent to wait in the ‘danger zone’ with Naima.

Clip Package: The Hectic Life of an American Idol Contestant

We were treated to the first clip packages of the episode about halfway in. We already knew Thia and Naima were in the bottom three, but better late than never. The clip packages are among my favorite parts of the elimination shows. Last night, we got to see a glimpse of the kind of life these kids are living. First, they got up and went to their recording session at Interscope Records. From there it was off to perform at a benefit concert on a private jet. At the concert they got to meet Reba McEntire, Kelly Clarkson and “The Greatest”, legendary Muhammad Ali.

During the clip package, we also learned the contestants were forced to move out of the Idol Mansion because the ceilings leak. During that portion of the package, we saw poor Lauren take what looked like a very hard tumble down the steps. What I love about her was how she responded when the woman (possibly a producer) rushed to her aid and asked if she was okay. “No… and that’s definitely going to be on TV.” Way to laugh through the pain, Lauren! Hope you’re okay!

Also in the clip package was more footage of the events following Casey’s shocking elimination and save last week. This is why I love Casey. He’s a genuinely good person. He felt so guilty after being saved, despite the fact that, otherwise, he would’ve headed home. He said he couldn’t look any of the other contestants in the face because of that guilt. After laying down for a while though, and being assured that he had nothing to feel guilty about, he was welcomed back to the group with lots of hugs. Sadly, there was still one spot in the bottom three and Casey hadn’t been saved yet. On with the show.

Performance Five: James, Paul, Casey and Stefano – “Band on the Run”

I wanted to like this a lot more than I did. I just felt like something was missing. With a little more practice, though, these guys could really be onto something. Steven said they could “open up for Aerosmith”, but I have to think that was just Steven being polite. I could, of course, be wrong though. I think these guys could be really good if they didn’t have so much else going on.

Results: Round Four

I have to applaud Ryan for not drawing out Casey results and telling him he was safe right away, saying if he knew how many of the 55 million votes went to him, he’d “be proud”. I’d like to know, Seacrest. Just whisper it to me. Promise I won’t tell anyone. Anyway, that left James, Paul and Stefano on the hot seat. I was hoping Stefano would be in the bottom three, but alas, it was Paul officially meaning my two favorite contestants who had no chance of winning were in the bottom three.

Performance Six: Jamie Foxx and Will.I.Am – “Hot Wings”

Love the song and loved the performance. It was colorful, energetic and a ton of fun to watch. Looking forward to “Rio”, the movie the song is featured in.

The Bottom Three.

Results: Round Five – Who Went Home?

Unfortunately, kind of, Naima and Thia went home with Paul staying to sing another day. I love Paul and I felt Thia’s time was up a few weeks back, but Naima’s departure just about broke my heart. She seemed to take it well and while I think she has a career ahead of her, I couldn’t help wondering if Paul shouldn’t have gone in her place. Perhaps not. I’m conflicted on this one, folks. I don’t know whether to be more happy Paul stayed or more sad Naima left. I’ll choose a little of column A and a little of column B.

Final Words On Thursday’s Episode

Each week that passes makes eliminations harder. As we watched the clips of Naima and Thia over the last few weeks, it was harder to say goodbye. Paul gave them warm hugs and, while he seemed happy for himself, one has to imagine it’s hard to feel entirely good about being chosen over people you’ve become close to.

Lauren has been having a rough go of it as of late, and that was evident last night as she broke down on stage. What viewers at home didn’t see was the tears she was shedding over the course of the night; starting with Thia’s entry into the bottom three and overflowing when Paul was added to that “in jeopardy” list. Some have been hard on her for letting her emotions get to her, but let’s remember, this girl is sixteen years old. Thia was her best friend and according to insiders close to the production, Paul has been like her big brother – trying to help her handle the pressure she’s under. At times it’s going to come to the surface, especially when two of the people she’s closest with might be leaving in one night.

Lauren is a beautiful, talented young woman who has also had to take a lot of flack from people for her weight. Come on, people. She’s a teenage girl. It’s cruel. I think she’s gorgeous and more importantly, incredibly talented. While appearance does matter, unfortunately, her talent should and will win out. She isn’t fat by any stretch of the imagination, even if she does have a few curves. Lauren looks the way real girls look. Let’s leave her alone, okay?

Genuinely Shocking Moments on Last Night's Shocking 'American Idol' season 10 - 2011

American Idol has cried wolf so many times, when the show promises "The outcome ... may shock you" we are conditioned to flip over to Family Guy reruns during the results show. But last night Idol did something truly shocking: produced one hour of riveting live television. We were shocked! Shocked! At how many times the show managed to genuinely shock us. Here's a rundown:

Shock 1: Marc Anthony Has a Potty Mouth
Jennifer Lopez's husband came on the show to help the hopefuls master their in-ear monitors and got bleeped two times during a two-and-a-half-minute segment on network TV ("You're going to hear a lot of s---" and "I want no bulls--- excuses, you hear me"). They couldn't find footage of him not cursing? They wanted to make him look like a badass? Either way, it was odd.

Shock 1A: Marc Anthony Was Permitted to Wear Headphones Other Than Beats by Dre
Jimmy Iovine, the studio musicians, the band -- everyone's been forced to shill for Interscope's favorite ear-wear this season, but Anthony brought his own headphones to listen in to the live show backstage this week. We are honestly surprised nobody made him take them off on camera.

Shock 2: Stevie Wonder!
A surprise performer the show actually kept a surprise! Wonder rolled out to sing his 1970 single "Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours" with the top 11 and stuck around to croon 1981's "Happy Birthday" to a very stunned, "speechless" Steven Tyler.

Shock 3: Ryan Seacrest Actually Successfully Tricked Us - Twice!
Either he's getting better at this, or we're getting rusty, because Seacrest had us baffled when he said, "The judges all had positive things to say about you last night, but because of the outcome of the vote, I'm afraid you'll all be packing your bags... in a few months to go on that summer tour, because you're safe!" (See 4 for the second related results shock.)

Shock 3: Jennifer Nettles' Stylist Approved This Outfit

Producers put together a surprisingly amusing segment about the contestants' love of professional wrestling that included footage of their couch-cushion ring in the mansion. And when James Durbin and Paul McDonald were called up for results, Seacrest told them, "Tonight is unbelievable. The nation has spoken, and both of you guys are not safe tonight. I mean, you're really not safe tonight." Because Hulk Hogan was there! And he tore his shirt off! And it was really hilarious and we're 12 years old.

Shock 5: The Big Casey Abrams Finale Was the Most Nerve-Wracking Five Minutes in Idol History
Seacrest announced Abrams had received the fewest votes, the bearded Nirvana butcher started "singing for his life," and got cut off after three growl-heavy lines so the judges could announce they'd used their once-a-season "save" to keep him on the show. Abrams' hands shook, he nearly fell down, he asked if they were kidding, he approached the judges and grabbed Jennifer Lopez's hands, he grabbed Steven Tyler, he collapsed on the stairs, he screamed, he said something that had to be bleeped, he ran to hug his parents, he said Seacrest "Scared the stuff out of me," and he vowed to make the judges proud. Abrams may be an annoying singer with a bit too much confidence, but if he keeps performing like this, the show will find a way to keep him on until the very end.

Ah, to be young. Your skin is wrinkle-free, your cynicism hasn't completely overtaken you … and, if what happened in the "American Idol" semi-finals is any indication, you’ve got some seriously strong pipes.

Sure, I know everyone on "Idol" is young. And of course I remember that last year's winner, Jordin Sparks, wasn't exactly elderly. Still, it's definitely clear that the 18-and-under crowd is really ruling the "Idol" roost so far.

Taking the lead is the unbelievably cherubic David Archuleta, who we know is a human being because he looks and acts like one but in many ways seems more like a precious doll or plaything.

To get an idea of what David's like, take the most bashful person you know, add a dash of Melinda Doolittle, mix in some dimples and you're left with this 17-year-old who's as earnest as a Hallmark card.

Archuleta perfectly fills that whole innocent, prepubescent Sanjaya-Kevin Covais role. But unlike some of those other boys (sorry Sanjaya lovers — all two of you that may be left), this one definitely delivers the goods. Which is a good thing — because otherwise, his gee-gosh-you-really-like-me thing might really get old.

Then there's Alaina Whitaker, a 16-year-old dead ringer for Carrie Underwood, who may have come off as cocky during her original audition (Simon told her she wasn't as good as she thought she was) but is more than rising to the occasion now. In fact, the judges in a rare moment of complete agreement all sang her praises.

Our trio wasn't all behind 17-year-old Alexandrea Lushington, but I have to say she's the one whose transition wowed me the most. During the auditions, she was cloaked in an army green jacket and seemed relatively demure; quite honestly, her sweet great-grandma made more of an impression than she did.

But on Wednesday night, she came out rocking a whole new look, which seemed to be accompanied by an entirely different personality. Clad in a hip T-shirt, skirt and suspenders with her hair piled on top of her head and an enormous peace earring dangling from her ear, the girl really worked the stage like a pro.

An uncharacteristically astute Paula said it well: Alexandrea just took control from the moment she came out there. While Simon ripped into her a bit, even he had to admit that the girl's personality — she managed the nearly impossible feat of having attitude but not coming across as either snobby or precocious — was stellar.

I'm still holding out hope for 18-year-old Kady Malloy, who delivered an extremely dour rendition of "Groovy Kind of Love" but was shown off-stage doing hilariously accurate Britney Spears imitations that displayed her talent a whole lot better. The judges encouraged her to fun it up and though she stared daggers at them, I get the feeling she'll take that advice to heart.

At least I hope she does. Because otherwise, there is a slew of even younger kids nipping at her heels.

Simon Cowell (born 7 October 1959) is an English artist and repertoire ("A&R") executive for Sony BMG in the United Kingdom, but is known as a judge on television programs such as Pop Idol, The X Factor, American Idol and Britain's Got Talent. He is notorious for his unsparingly blunt and often controversial criticism of the contestants. He is known for combining activities in the television and music industries, having produced singles and records for various television characters.

Early life
Simon Cowell was born in Brighton, East Sussex in the United Kingdom and brought up in Elstree, Hertfordshire. His father, Eric Philip Cowell, was a property developer and music industry executive, and his mother, Julie Brett (née Josie Dalglish) is a former dancer and socialite. Cowell's paternal grandparents, Joseph Cowell and Esther Malinsky, were English Jews, and his maternal grandfather was Scottish. He has three half-brothers; Michael, John (millionaire business development and marketing consultant), and Tony (co-author of Cowell's autobiography), and a half-sister, June (who lives with her Spanish daughters in Majorca, Spain), and younger brother Nicholas Cowell who is now a millionaire property magnate.
Cowell attended Dover College as did his brother, but left early before Sixth Form. He took a few menial jobs, but did not get along well with co-workers and bosses, until his father who was executive at the recording giant at EMI Music Publishing, managed to get him a job in the mail room.

Professional career
In 1984, Cowell met up with Pete Waterman for the first time. Waterman was previously known for being a founding member of the Stock Aitken Waterman songwriting and record producing trio. One year later, Cowell and Iain Burton, a fellow clerk, left EMI and formed an independent record label called Fanfare Records. Waterman who helped him regain success during the second half of the 1980s. Cowell would later describe in interviews (and in his autobiography I Don't Mean to be Rude, but...) that he learned more from Waterman in a short time than he could have in an entire career with any major label. Fanfare enjoyed success with its artist - and Cowell's girlfriend at the time - Sinitta Malone.
His father's connections originally got him rehired as the assistant to an A&R man. From there onwards, Simon worked his way up to record producer, but left during the early 1980s to form E&S Music, an independent music company. The label folded within a year of its launch, forcing him to return to EMI.
In 1989, Fanfare's mother company folded, driving Cowell's business into bankruptcy, forcing Cowell, deeply in debt, to move back in with his parents. Later that year, he became an A&R consultant for BMG. Subsequently, Cowell signed up a number of acts to S-Records that made a mark in the pop music world, including Curiosity Killed the Cat, Sonia Evans, Five, Westlife,Robson & Jerome, and Ultimate Kaos. He also released several novelty recordings featuring the likes of wrestlers of the World Wrestling Federation, Teletubbies, Zig and Zag and the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, that were huge successes. Cowell set up another label, Syco Records, in 2002 which later became part of Columbia Records and Sony BMG Music Entertainment. Artists such as Il Divo and contestants from The X Factor and America's Got Talent are released on Syco.

In 2006, Cowell signed to two more record-breaking deals. In the US, he agreed to remain as a judge on American Idol, earning £20 million ($40 million) per series for another 5 years. He also has a deal with FOX which allows his production company to broadcast Got Talent and American Inventor on other networks, but he may not appear on them. In the UK, he signed a "golden handcuffs" deal with ITV, worth approximately £6.5 million a year for 3 years, which gave ITV rights to his hit talent show The X Factor, a British singing talent show, and Grease Is The Word, a musical talent show to find the stars of a Grease production in London's West End. In late 2005, he signed a new contract to remain working for Sony BMG.

Projects
Cowell had been the producer and the creative force of many media, most notably Pop Idol and its international offspring. Beginning particularly in the 2000s, this has brought him worldwide fame and greatly increased monetary fortune.

The Idols Franchise and Il Divo
Cowell became a judge on the first season of Pop Idol in 2001, and on the first season of American Idol in 2002. His acerbic style of judging was a major reason for these shows' popularity.[citation needed] This was especially true of American Idol, where in its first season, word-of-mouth regarding "that nasty guy Simon" garnered media attention, more so than the hosts or contestants.[citation needed] Cowell's fame (or infamy) grew, fed by his signature phrase, "I don't mean to be rude, but …", inevitably followed by an unsparingly blunt appraisal of the contestant's talents, personality, or even physical appearance. Well known, media critic, Raj Sajja says, "He is absolutely fantastic and a crowd puller, besides, he is spot on, with his comments". Cowell also appeared on the one-off World Idol program in 2003, where it became clear that each country's version of the Idol had attempted to come up with its own "Simon Cowell" type personality. In 2003, Cowell placed #33 on Channel 4's list of the all-time 100 Worst Britons. Cowell's S Records signed the top two finishers of the first season of Pop Idol, Will Young and Gareth Gates, both of whom went on to have #1 UK hits. Efforts began in 2001 materialised in 2004, when Cowell returned to his group manufacturing roots with his latest brainchild, the internationally successful operatic pop group Il Divo, consisting of three opera singers and one pop singer of four different nationalities. Inspired by the success of Il Divo, Simon created a child version, Angelis, beating competition from many similar groups emerging at Christmas 2006.

The X Factor
Finally, in 2004, along with Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh, Cowell was judge on the new British TV talent show The X Factor, which he created using his production company, Syco. The X Factor was an instant success with the viewers and returned for a second and third series in 2005 and 2006 . He will return for a fourth series in 2007, alongside Sharon Osbourne, Dannii Minogue and Louis Walsh, who before, was fired from the panel by Simon, and replaced by Brian Friedman who is a judge on Grease Is The Word. Walsh was brought back after Friedman turned down the job on the panel, and became the creative director.

American Inventor
On March 16, 2006, Simon Cowell's next competition show, American Inventor, debuted on ABC. Fledgling entrepreneurs from across the United States compete to see who can come up with the best new product concept. The 2006 winner, Janusz Liberkowski, received $1 million and the opportunity to develop his idea into a business. The show returned again in 2007.

The Got Talent Franchise
Cowell is the executive producer of America's Got Talent, along with Fremantle producers of the Idol series. The show was a huge success for NBC, drawing around 12 million viewers a week, and beating So You Think You Can Dance on FOX (produced by rival and Idol creator Simon Fuller).
A British version aired in 2007, and was screened from 9 June 2007 until 17 June 2007, with ITV screening nine episodes. Fellow judges are Piers Morgan and Amanda Holden.
The Australian version aired in 2007 and was screened on 18 February 2007. Fellow judges are Tom Burlinson and Dannii Minogue Hosted by Grant Denyer on Channel Seven.
It was announced on 12 August 2007, that Cowell has axed Connie Talbot from the music business, and despite her age, Cowell thought that she needed to be old enough to experience music.

Celebrity Duets
Cowell also executive-produces Celebrity Duets, which can be described as "an Idol show for Hollywood superstars." The show is hosted by Wayne Brady, and its judges are Marie Osmond, Little Richard and David Foster.

Grease is the Word
Cowell also executive produces Grease Is the Word for ITV. Grease is the Word is the show to find the next big stars to play Danny and Sandy on the 2007 UK west end revival of Grease. The is hosted by Zoe Ball and judged by Brits David Ian and Sinitta and Americans David Gest and Brian Friedman. This hasn't turned out to be the success he imagined. Simon himself said, "It has been slaughtered by the critics - and rightly so. It is far too similar to our other formats."

Rock Rivals
Cowell is joining forces with Shed Productions, the company behind hit UK dramas Footballers' Wives and Bad Girls, to produce a new show called Rock Rivals which will be a new ITV1 drama series based on an 'X-Factor' type show.

Other activities
Cowell has been involved in charity work for many years without getting much attention from the media. He supports children from The Association Of Children’s Hospices and invites them backstage to the screenings of The X Factor. When he can, he stops by some of the hospices to visit the children.
In December 2003, Cowell published a book, I Don't Mean to Be Rude, But …. In it, he told the whole story of his childhood, his years working in music and experiences on Pop Idol, Pop Stars Rivals, and American Idol, and finally, his tips for being successful as a pop star.
Cowell has appeared as a guest voice in an episode of The Simpsons ("Smart and Smarter"), in which he gets beaten up by Homer Simpson (while criticising Homer's punches), and made an MTV Movie Award-winning cameo appearance as himself in Scary Movie 3, where he sits in judgment during a battle rap (and subsequently gets killed by gunfire for criticising the rappers). He also appears in Shrek 2 as a judge in Far Far Away Idol, and also provided the voice.
He appeared on an episode of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? (the British version) and Saturday Night Live in 2004. Cowell has also guest-starred (filling in for Regis Philbin) in the popular talk show Live with Regis and Kelly during American Idol's finalist week in early 2006. Cowell was once the fastest "Star in a Reasonably Priced Car" on BBC's motoring show Top Gear, driving a Suzuki Liana around the show's test track in a time of 1:47.1. When Top Gear retired the Liana along with its rankings after the eighth series, Cowell was the eighth fastest overall and the third fastest non-professional driver. Cowell introduced entertainer Dick Clark at the 2006 Primetime Emmy Awards and also contributed in the 2006 Queens Speech to the Nation (UK) for which he chose the title music. He was seen on Comic Relief Does The Apprentice where he donated £25,000 for a fun fair ticket. Cowell has also appeared on the MTV shows Cribs and Punk'd. Cowell was chosen as the first 'victim' of the re-launched This Is Your Life in an episode broadcast on 2 June 2007. He was presented with the Red Book by Sir Trevor McDonald while presenting American Idol.
Besides judging unknowns of the music industry, occasionally Cowell comments on already-established pop icons. For example, he opined in Esquire magazine that Beyoncé Knowles was overrated, and that Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful" was one of the best pop records ever made. Talking about Christina herself Cowell stated "She is an unbelievable talent.
On July 1, 2007 Cowell appeared alongside Randy Jackson and Ryan Seacrest as a speaker at the Concert For Diana, held at Wembley Stadium.

Personal life
In late 2002, Cowell started dating longtime friend Terri Seymour. In 2006, British newspaper News of the World reported that he had cheated on Seymour with model and socialite Jasmine Lennard, and printed photos of her leaving his home. Photos of a visibly irate Seymour (who was in the US when the story broke) being met at the airport by Cowell were later published in Heat Magazine. However, both Cowell and Lennard, who was also in a relationship, denied that anything untoward had occurred, and attributed the meeting to business.
Upon his appearance on Top Gear, it was revealed that Cowell pays more than £21.7m per year in income tax, suggesting that his taxable income is over £54.25m per year with income tax at the time approximately 40%. (NB: UK Income Tax 40% for earnings over £39,825).
He appeared on the gameshow Sale of the Century in 1990, as reported in The Sun Newspaper.

Since his debut, the show has more than doubled its listenership. Radio stations nationwide access the show via satellite or the Internet, ensuring up-to-the minute music chart information.

Locally, Ryan took over the most coveted radio job in Los Angeles three years ago on its Top-40 radio powerhouse, 102.7 KIIS-FM. Since the February 2004 debut of "On Air with Ryan Seacrest," the program has become the No. 1 morning show in L.A., broadcasting weekdays from 5:00-10:00 AM.

Originally from Atlanta, Ryan started his career in broadcasting at the age of 16, when he applied for an internship at one of Atlanta's top radio stations, WSTR-STAR 94. While working at STAR 94, he finished high school and went on to attend the University of Georgia, where he majored in Journalism. During his freshman year in college, he was offered his first television show as the host of ESPN's "Radical Outdoor Challenge," in which athletes competed against one another for cash prizes.

Ryan currently lives in Los Angeles.
