De carrière van de Zuid-Afrikaanse fotograaf Pieter Hugo (Johannesburg, 1976) is met recht ‘booming’ te noemen. Zijn monumentale foto’s, waarin het hedendaagse Afrika een hoofdrol speelt, krijgen inmiddels wereldwijde aandacht. Aankomend voorjaar toont het Fotomuseum Den Haag als eerste museum een uitgebreid overzicht van het werk dat hij maakte tussen 2003 en 2011. Zijn beroemdste series zijn er te zien: ‘The Hyena & Other Men’, het bizarre ‘Nollywood’ en het schrijnende ‘Permanent Error’. Zijn indrukwekkende portretten vertellen persoonlijke verhalen over mensen die aan de rand van de samenleving verkeren in zuidelijk Afrika.

The South African photographer Pieter Hugo’s (Johannesburg, 1976) monumental photographs, centred around contemporary Africa, are now well known around the world. In the coming year the Hague Museum of Photography will be the first museum to exhibit a comprehensive survey of Hugo’s work from 2003-2011. The exhibition will include a curated selection of his most well-known series: ‘The Hyena & Other Men’, the bizarre ‘Nollywood’ and the striking ‘Permanent Error’. His impressive portraits tell personal stories about recurring themes throughout his oeuvre, namely those people who inhabit the margins of society in Sub-Saharan Africa.
