Musical genius and mega-nerd Ben Jacobs is the mastermind behind the delightfully feverish songs of London's Max Tundra, one of the most eccentric and enjoyable acts you may ever experience. Drawing from anything and everything he can get his eager hands on, Jacobs loads his robust dance tracks with musical references so eclectic and bizarre, you would think he's listened to every song ever written. But Jacobs' skills extend far beyond his ability to regurgitate; wielding an aural palette as wide as a mile, Jacobs layers his many sounds with a constant consideration for the convivial, each track remaining fun and danceable despite an almost oversaturated mix of tones. Almost oversaturated... but not quite.

Which Song is a good place to start; singing about the follies of a dork trying to meet "girls in the industry," Jacobs uses an intricate mix of piano, poppy percussion and an '80s synth to craft a funky rager that will explode all over you and have you hooked instantly. The first thirty seconds of The Entertainment might seem like a relatively standard indie track, until Jacobs throws in a sunny house beat that eventually collapses upon itself into what can only be described as a beautiful mess. Until We Die, the eleven-minute conclusion of the album, hasn't a dull moment.

While Max Tundra may seem a bit overwhelming at first encounter, it is clearly the work of a master, containing the kind of music so meticulously crafted that you could listen to it a hundred times and still find it fresh and intriguing. And for all his mixing board wizardry, Jacobs manages to avoid the ostentatious and make beats that are truly endearing.

Headless Heroes is the result of Eddie Bezalel and Hugo Nicolson's desire to see some of their favorite legendary folk songs recreated in a more modern tongue. Bezalel ended up finding Nevada songstress Alela Diane through her music online, while Nicolson was off gathering up the rest of this cover gang -- a group of five hand-selected artists that he had come across through various connections.

Together the two producers led this elite group of seemingly freshman musicians (only in age, though; seniors in scope and style) through the notions and notes of recreating some of their many favorite folk artists' legendary numbers.

True Love Will Find You In The End recreates the lyrics that Daniel Johnston originally wrote to recite simple, yet important life lessons. Similarly, lines like "be yourself, don’t hesitate" (in Just One Time, a re-titling of Spacemen 3's "Mary Anne") shed some light on some of the most basic lessons one needs to learn. Just Like Honey, originally by shoegaze kings The Jesus & Mary Chain, really gives Diane a chance to shine, drawing to a close with a repetitive duet between the sweet soulstress and a male member... and man, the tune goes down oh-so-sweet. And in Gentle Soul's See My Love, her voice really takes flight, turning airy and angelic. The song grows in tempo and energy; can a song be triumphantly sad?

Many of the original songs are slow and somber, with little piano highlights or up-tempo moments, and that aura remains in these remakes, but Diane's voice -- while still teetering on the edge of sad and morbid -- adds something uplifting, a little pizzazz and a little curiosity.

The result is a revolving door of folk rock tunes; whether or not you knew the original artists, who strummed up these lyrics over the combined course of 40 years, you'll love the way Diane delivers them so much, you’ll want more, and find yourself bouncing back and forth between this great compilation and the original records.

Chris Palko a.k.a. Cage is the kind of person who shouldn't worry about rumors, mostly because it would be damn near impossible to even come close to competing with the truth.

Think about what you were doing when you were five... playing Nintendo 64? Collecting bugs? This dude was tying a tourniquet around his drug-addicted father's arm between beatings. How about during your late teens? Finishing up with puberty? Pre-gaming a high school dance? This dude was an unwilling and misdiagnosed test subject in a mental institution. For someone who was doing drugs before his peers had moved from tee-ball to Little League, and whose bitter hatred of authority figures goes without saying, a move to the rap world post-madhouse seemed like a logical first step toward recovery. Just take a listen to Palko's debut album with Def Jux and you'll hear just how perfectly logical of a step that was.

While his new EP I Never Knew You -- which he's giving away to promote the upcoming 7/7 album -- is certainly not lighthearted, it does contain promising evidence that Palko is willing to expand his artistic horizons beyond the confines of his fascinating, albeit horrifying past. The title track is a half-sung sex march through the shadows; "Hell Oh" is a paranoid castigation of "green pictures of white men"; the final track, "It's The '80s Again", features an unstoppable flow with that old-school frankness about the carefree consumption of the decade.

Panko is clearly someone with a lot on his mind, and this EP shows that he's just as capable at creating stories as he is at retelling them. After all, you can't rap about daddy forever.

Having turned down a huge major label deal years ago, British acoustic musician Merz has preferred to float along in semi-anonymity, making beautifully contemplative music with little fanfare. His third album, named after the moving company that he and his wife used after being evicted, has gained one notable fan though: Coldplay's Chris Martin said "Merz sounds like nobody else in the world and the world would be alright if it listened to nobody else... We absolutely love him."

The lead MC of alternative hip hop group Brand Nubian, Grand Puba is back with his fourth solo album. With warm soul samples, jazz drums, and Puba's easygoing flow, RetroActive is one to throw on at the end of a long day. Q-Tip lights up a guest verse on "Good To Go," and, in spite of their previous differences, the rest of Brand Nubian (Lord Jamar and Sadat X) show up for the last track. RapReviews says "[Puba's] all brand new again, the figurative and literal hip-hop throwback that's still in fashion."

Stylish, poppy Stockholm rockers Kamera inherited more than eyeliner and black boots from The Cure and Duran Duran; Swedish music magazine It's A Trap says that Kamera has a "damned fine grasp of what made the songwriting of the 1980s so compelling." Their newest album, Blank Expressions, is a slick, tightly assembled collection of synthy new wave, ready for the darkest nightclub you know.

Does it matter that you've never heard of DJ JS-1? Dude has a Rolodex that many would kill for, and assembled some of the biggest names in hip hop for this mixtape: KRS-One, Masta Ace, Ill Bill, Rahzel, Common, Aesop Rock, and way too many more to list. It took over three years to complete this mix (coordinating 40 emcees isn't as easy as it sounds), and the end result is a loving labor of one of the most connected DJs out there.

Memphis rapper Kia Shine first charted in '07 with his smash single "Krispy," and now he's back with an EP to preview his upcoming album. Featured on MTV Jams and BET's New Joint of the Day, "Checkin My Fresh" samples a memorable Jay-Z line from "Swagga Like Us" for the hook and features verses from Young Dro and Maino. The EP also includes four new tracks from Kia Shine; Respect Due coming soon!

Grand Puba

The lead MC of alternative hip hop group Brand Nubian, Grand Puba is back with his fourth solo album. With warm soul samples, jazz drums, and Puba's easygoing flow, RetroActive is one to throw on at the end of a long day. Q-Tip lights up a guest verse on "Good To Go," and, in spite of their previous differences, the rest of Brand Nubian (Lord Jamar and Sadat X) show up for the last track. RapReviews says "[Puba's] all brand new again, the figurative and literal hip-hop throwback that's still in fashion."

For fans of: Brand Nubian + A Tribe Called Quest + De La Soul

Kamera

Stylish, poppy Stockholm rockers Kamera inherited more than eyeliner and black boots from The Cure and Duran Duran; Swedish music magazine It's A Trap says that Kamera has a "damned fine grasp of what made the songwriting of the 1980s so compelling." Their newest album, Blank Expressions, is a slick, tightly assembled collection of synthy new wave, ready for the darkest nightclub you know.

DJ JS-1
