The Document Foundation announces the availability of LibreOffice 3.3.3, a new release of the most stable version of the free office suite for personal productivity, targetingcorporate users. LibreOffice 3.3.3 is already available for download at the following

According to Thorsten Behrens, a developer and member of the TDF Steering Committee, “LibreOffice 3.3.3 fixes several bugs and improves the security of the suite, to specifically address the needs of corporate deployments, where stability is more important than new features.

This branch will be maintained until the end of the year, to allow a smooth and safe transition to LibreOffice 3.4.x.” LibreOffice 3.3.3 is available for Windows, MacOS X and Linux (DEB and RPM), in over 100 different languages (more than twice the language coverage of comparable proprietary products). Users of LibreOffice 3.3.2 are invited to update theirsoftware.

This is the third update to the stable version of LibreOffice.
It contains only safe code fixes and translation updates, and is considered safe for production use.

Please check some changes in this stable release

• This release is bit-for-bit identical to the 3.3.3 Release Candidate 1, so you don’t need to download or reinstall if you have that version already.

• The distribution for Windows is an international build, so you can choose the user interface language that you prefer. Help content is available via an online service, or alternatively as a separate install.

• For Windows users that have OpenOffice.org installed, we advise uninstalling that beforehand, because it registers the same file type associations.

• If you run Windows 2000, you may require this update before being able to install LibreOffice.

• If you run Linux, the GCJ Java variant has known issues with LibreOffice, we advise to e.g. use OpenJDK instead.

• LibreOffice contains all the security fixes from OpenOffice.org in 3.3.0, and perhaps more as a side-effect of the code clean-ups.

Now and then, office-type documents need to be converted. The latex users have always been able to produce a variety of formats from the command line, but for the OpenOffice/LibreOffice users, manual labor has been the solution. That changes with unoconv. Now you can convert to most file formats directly from the command line.

Unoconv is handy for many tasks. I commonly use it to convert all documents in a directory to PDFs, or MS Office compatible formats for clients. The beauty of it is that these previously tedious tasks are now one-liners.

If you’re on ubuntu or derivates (I’m on kubuntu) you can install unoconv from the command prompt:

$ sudo apt-get install unoconv

Having done that, you need to start the server half of unoconv.

$ unoconv --listener

Give this a few seconds to settle. It starts an instance of OpenOffice in the background which it ties into. To use this instance of OpenOffice for format conversion, now try the following:

$ unoconv -f pdf *.odp *.odt

This will convert all text documents and presentations to pdfs. There isn’t much control in the process, but if you want the standard output, it is a great help.

When it comes to exporting to MS Office formats, you have slightly more control. You can, for instance, target the format doc, doc6 and doc95, meaning Word 97/2000/XP, Word 6.0 and Word 95 respectively.

The project is alive, so there is good hope to have the final glitches sorted out. The tool spits out a couple of scary warnings now and then, but the documents seem to turn out well.

The conversion is based entirely on OpenOffice’s conversion, so the quality is what you know from there. Since the conversion is automatic, you might have to limit yourself at times. For instance, I’ve learned that not using the arrow connectors, but instead relying on lines, helps in odp to ppt conversion. Also, the ppts produced are not compatible with the very latest MS Office on Mac – but then you can create PDF’s just as easy.

Install and use Fluxbox in Ubuntu:

Open terminal type the following:

First open the source.list file:

edit   /etc/apt/source.list 

and add

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/paultag/fluxbox/ubuntu maverick main 
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/paultag/fluxbox/ubuntu maverick main   

Save and exit

Now in the terminal type :

sudo apt-get update -y 

Finally install Fluxbox  with:

sudo apt-get  install fluxbox

Installation in Ubuntu and LinuxMint via PPA:

Open terminal and type the following commands :

1 — > Download Photoshop CS5 Portable : Click here

2 –> In your Windows machine, download (if you don’t own a copy) and install the Photoshop CS5.

Once the installation is completed, go the Start menu and type “regedit” on the search bar. The registry window will appear. Navigate to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Adobe“, right click the Adobe folder and select “Export”. When prompted, name the file “adobe.reg”.

Back to your Ubuntu Maverick machine, we will need to install wine and the Microsoft true type fonts

This will create the “.wine” folder and prepare wine for usage.

Copying Photoshop files from Windows

Since we can’t get the installer to work in Ubuntu 10.10, we have to copy the core files from Windows to the Ubuntu machine. Folders/files you need to copy/paste are listed down below:

Lastly, save the “adobe.reg” file to the Home folder. In your terminal, type:

This will import the “adobe.reg” into the wine registry.

That’s it. Now go to “Home -> .wine -> drive_c -> Program Files -> Adobe ->Adobe Photoshop CS5“, right click on the Photoshop.exe file and select “Open with Wine Windows Program Loader”.

Photoshop CS5 should load. You can also add a shortcut to the Application Menu for quick access.

Note:

1. Some people have mentioned that Photoshop CS5 in Ubuntu crashed with the text function. This has been fixed with the addition of atmlib.dll file.

2. Complex PSD file should load without problem.

3. The above mods were done with wine version 1.2.1. and Photoshop CS5 trial version. If you are using other version of wine or Photoshop, there is no guarantee that the above method will work.

Alternative to Photoshop CS5

For those who can’t get Photoshop CS5 to work, or find it too heavy for your daily usage, you can try out PhotoShop CS5 Portable. This is the unofficial portable version of Photoshop CS5 (not released by Adobe) and the installer work fine with wine. You will still need the atmlib.dll file for the text function to work.

Plasma Workspaces Put You in Control

Mobile Target Makes KDE Platform Lose Weight

The KDE Platform, on which the Plasma Workspaces and KDE Applications are built also gains new capabilities available to all KDE applications. The introduction of a “mobile build target” allows for easier deployment of applications on mobile devices. The Plasma framework gains support for writing desktop widgets in QML, the declarative Qt language, and provides new Javascript interfaces for interacting with data. Nepomuk, the technology behind metadata and semantic search in KDE applications, now provides a graphical interface to back up and restore data. UPower, UDev and UDisks can be used instead of the deprecated HAL. Bluetooth support is improved. The Oxygen widget and style set is improved and a new Oxygen theme for GTK applications allows them to seamlessly merge into the Plasma workspaces and look just like KDE applications.
