Saskatchewan held its biggest draw since February 2020 and invited 533 candidates for provincial nomination for permanent residence in Canada on 14 August 2020. 286 were selected from the Express Entry Pool.

Post Graduate Work Permit is #1 Work Permit in Canada

The Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) is now the number one work permit in Canada.

It may be obtained after graduating from a Canadian institute and may be valid anywhere between eight months and up to three years depending on the length of study program.

Graduating students who gain one year work experience while holding PGWP may qualify for permanent residence under Canada Experience Class.

In 2019, nearly 200,000 former international students held a PGWP, and around 60,000 former students obtain Canadian permanent residence each year.

PGWP requires students to complete their program of study in Canada. However, under the new policy students who are unable to physically come to Canada by the end of 2020, can begin their studies at a Canadian institution from the comfort of their own home and then travel to Canada to finish their program here.

This will not affect their eligibility to qualify for the PGWP at a later stage even if they took 50% of their program online from their home country.

Canada determined to welcome immigrants

Shortly before the pandemic hit Canada, the Minister of immigration announced Canada’s immigration plan and reiterated the pledge to welcome over one million immigrants by 2021.

In February 2020, we saw the biggest Express Entry draw ever when Canada invited 4900 applicants to apply for permanent residence in Canada in a single draw. Then there came the pandemic and borders were closed. Surprisingly, the Canadian immigration department continued to select immigrants from it’s online Express Entry pool, albeit with a slightly modified strategy whereby they shifted their focus toward provincial nominee and Canada Experience class candidates. This was considered a smart move as most of the applicants under the provincial nominee and Canada Experience Class are believed to be already residing in Canada and do not require to enter the country from overseas. This strategy ensured that Canada continue to get the very vital supply of qualified immigrants and help it achieve its goal welcoming immigrants. Therefore, all Express Entry draws since March 2020 targeted only PNP and CEC candidates. However, this is also true that some PNP and CEC can date may be outside Canada. Realizing this, an all program draw was also held recently that invited Federal Skilled Worker Program candidates as well.

Canada has held 25 Express Entry Draws so far this year and invited 57,700 applicants to apply for permanent residence in Canada. The first half of 2020 in fact saw more applicants being invited in comparison to same time last year. Canada invited 49,900 applicants in first half of 2020 while the invitations were 41,800 for the same time in 2019.

There is no denying for the fact that Express Entry and other dreams will be key for Canada to attract global talent from all over the world. As we move into second half of 2020, a lot will depend on how the country controls the spread of COVID-19 as it has a direct impact on the decision to open its borders to foreign national and new immigrants. In the meantime, Canada as not ceased to accept and process application for permanent and temporary residents. Prospective immigrants should prepare and submit their applications to stand the chance of consideration instead of waiting. The virus is destined for eradication and we will all get through this together, and soon.

Canada announces new measures to help international students

IRCC has just announced new measures to help international students start a new program online from outside Canada.

Canada has announced changes to facilitate online learning for international students.

International students can now include the time they apply for a study permit, rather than when they were approved for one, towards a future post-graduation work permit.

Students must eventually be approved for a study permit, and complete more than 50% of their program in Canada.

IRCC is also providing priority processing for students who have submitted a complete study permit application.

The biggest change, however, is that the Study permit applications will now be approved in 2 stages:

These stages are:

Eligibility, and
Admissibility

To pass the eligibility stage, students must show that they have been accepted in a Canadian institute, have available funds and are otherwise eligible for the study permit.

Applicants passing eligibility will be notified of a 1st stage approval.

At that point, applicants can begin studying online while abroad and have that time count towards their post-graduation work permit, provided they meet other criteria, and that they eventually receive full approval of their study permit.

The next stage will be the admissibility stage or final approval. Students receive final approval once they meet all admissibility requirements, including submitting necessary documents, such as, biometrics, an immigration medical exam and a police certificate.

Canada welcomed over 650,000 international students at the post-secondary education level In 2019. More than 58,000 former international students have become Canadian permanent residents.

Impact of COVID-19 on Canadian Immigration Policies

The Government of Canada has provided an update on travel restrictions put in place to restrict the spread of COVID-19.

These Exemptions will apply to foreign nationals who have already been approved for work permit, study permit or permanent residence.

Exemptions:

The exemptions include

seasonal agricultural workers, fish/seafood workers, caregivers and all other temporary foreign workers
international students who held a valid study permit, or had been approved for a study permit, when the travel restrictions took effect on March 18, 2020
permanent resident applicants who had been approved for permanent residence before the travel restrictions were announced on March 18, 2020, but who had not yet traveled to Canada

Health Screening Protocols:

Individuals will be subjected to health screening protocols before travel. In additions, they will be required to isolate themselves for 14 days upon their entrance in Canada.

Visitors:

In additions, others will be impacted in the following manner:

foreign nationals travelling at the invitation of the Canadian government for a purpose related to the containment of COVID-19
close family members of Canadian citizens
close family members of Canadian permanent residents
a person who is authorized, in writing, by a consular officer of the Government of Canada to enter Canada for the purpose of reuniting immediate family members
a person registered as an Indian under the Indian Act
accredited diplomats and family members (including NATO, those under the United Nations Headquarters Agreement, other organizations)
air crews
any foreign national, or group of foreign nationals, whose entry would be in the national interest, as determined by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, the Minister of Public Safety
members of the Canadian military, visiting forces and their family members
transiting passengers

Canada's New Federal Skilled Worker Program 2014 - Are you eligible

The Canadian government has included new occupations for consideration under it Federal Skilled Worker Program. Following 50 occupations are eligible for processing currently. You must have at least one year of continuous, full-time (or an equal amount of part-time) paid work experience, in at least one of these occupations within the last ten years. Effective May 1, 2014, CIC will consider only 25,000 applications for processing. Within the 25,000 cap, only 1,000 applications per eligible occupation will be considered for processing within this same time frame.

This does not apply if the applicant possess a valid offer of arranged employment, or if they are applying under the PhD stream.
