Recently Butler University celebrated the inauguration of their new President, James Danko.

The photo is of their new President, James Danko, making his acceptance speech at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Indianapolis on November 12, 2011.

He liked the Contemporary Aluminum Acrylic Lectern so much; they ordered one for their own facilities!

This is the same lectern used by the NFL Commissioner during a big press conference.

Recently Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA used an AmpliVox Pinnacle Podium ST3250 at a ceremony to open a new bridge.

Jewish Pulpit: What is a Shtender?

A shtender is similar to a pulpit or lectern in the Jewish Synagogue. It is often used as a stand for a Jewish Rabbi to place his notes or books. The shtender has a compartment used to keep Jewish ritual objects that are frequently used in the synagogue. It is often looked at as a symbol for prayer, study, and observance in the church.

Most wooden shtenders are crafted with patterns or designs to symbolize a concept or story from Jewish history, such as tree branches that personify nature or doves symbolizing purity or grace.

What is the difference between a shtender and a lectern? Besides the way they are used, their differences are few. Both are used as a functioning stand to hold notes or anything else a speaker might need. The main variation is the compartment located directly below the surface. A shtender has a locked compartment for ritual items while a regular lectern may not feature that compartment.

While there are some nay-sayers who bring up some negative effects of technology on education in the classrooms, mainly budgetary reasons, using new technologies is the future of the education system.
The following reasons should silence the nay-sayer and help them heed the wisdom from Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach,
"Teachers will not be replaced by technology, but teachers who don't use technology will be replaced by those who do.".

Teachers are finding that using different classroom technologies like tablet computers, digital video, iPods, and video games are great tools for helping students learn.

1. Students love it. Students love using new technologies in the classroom. Whether it be the "cool" factor or just a genuine interest in new technology, it allows teachers to vary activities of the day and engage students. There is no commandment for education that says,
"THOU SHALT NOT HAVE FUN"
Students spend hours using technology like computers and television when they get home from school--why not engage them through their favorite mediums?

Using technology keeps students awake and their attention level high. How hard is it for you to fall asleep while on the internet compared to hearing a lecture?

What is the #1 Portable PA System Mistake? Not Charging Rechargeable Battery Long Enough

The #1 Customer troubleshooting phone call we receive deals with the rechargeable batteries on the following products. When a customer first receives the PA system, they should plug it in and charge it overnight so it is at full strength to start its career in projecting your voice.

Each of the following products feature built in rechargeable batteries that need to be charged overnight for a minimum of 7 hours before primary use.

It is also recommended to not let the battery drain before you charge it, it is better to keep it charged for each use. After each time of use, it should be recharged to prolong the life of the PA System.

The Mity-Vox PA System should be charged overnight before use.

The iPod Portable PA System needs to be charged at least 7-10 hours before first use.

The Titan Wireless PA System should be charged at least 6-8 hours before its first use.

The Digital Audio Travel Partner should be charged overnight and should be charged after each use to maximize the battery life. Recharging the unit only when the battery status light is yellow or red will shorten the useful life of the batteries.

Presidential Podium used at School Assembly

Recently, Amplivox Sound Systems had the privilege of supporting local award winning school by supplying a Wireless Presidential Plus Sound Lectern for their celebratory assembly.

Here are some common wireless microphone troubleshooting tips:

1. Do not stand with the mic directly in front of the speaker. This produces feedback because the sound waves leave the speaker and enter directly in the microphone, amplifying that noise and producing a loop that causes an even larger noise.

2. Always have extra batteries on hand for both the mic transmitter and the mic itself. You do not want your batteries to die in the middle of a presentation.

3. Make sure the transmitter and receiver are on the same frequency and that they are both powered. (show clips of Titan)

4. Make sure that the necessary cords are plugged in properly. Never pull out a connection by the cord---that will damage the cord.

5. Does the mic work? Sometimes a faulty mic can be a reason people blame the whole system for not working. Try several different microphones to see if they work.

6. Is the microphone close enough to the speaker's mouth to pick up their voice? Mics like the lapel mic or collar mic need to be fairly close to the speaker's mouth.
If you are using a lapel mic, make sure it is placed close to your mouth. many people place it a foot below their mouth and then are surprised that the mic does not pick up their voice. The high end lapel mics are that sensitive but can also pick up too much ambient noise.

A rule of thumb for presentations and public speaking is to test all equipment exactly the way you want it before the presentation to make sure it is working the way you want it to... you all know Murphy's Law, don't you?

Murphy's Law: "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong"

7. If your speakers are not picking up your wireless microphone clearly, check to see if there are any nearby devices that could be interfering with the microphone frequency. Cell phones, TVs, and even fluorescent lights can interfere with wireless signals.

8. If you have problem using multiple mics, you may want to check to see if your system has that capability. Every microphone needs a separate frequency.

9. Make sure the volume on the mic is at the desired level and make sure the MUTE button is not pressed.

Review of the AmpliVox Half-Mile Hailer:
"We bought one of these Amplivox units about a year ago for our nonprofit organization to use at public educational demonstrations. As an electrical engineer, I had spent quite a bit of time reviewing specifications and prices, and finally settled on this one. It isn't the cheapest on the market, but you get what you pay for.

The cone speaker is fairly directional, allowing you to control the direction in which it projects sound. In particular, you can stand to one side to avoid feedback. Surprisingly, however, the unit is not prone to feedback even if you are standing in front of the speaker, as long as you are not too close. I found that I can stand 10 meters or so in front of the speaker, with volume at reasonable levels, and still not have a feedback problem. Ideally, you are off to the side, but that's not always feasible in all locations.

Sound quality is in my opinion quite good for a public address system, but you should understand that this is a *public address system* and not a music system. You can certainly play music through the amplifier, but it is optimized for human speech and lacks the frequency response and dynamic range for high-fidelity music reproduction. In engineering design, there are always tradeoffs, and the designers were able to make this device work better for speech by intentionally limiting its response range. I have also been very pleased that the speaker has plenty of headroom, and I have not heard any clipping or overdrive.

One very nice feature of this model is that it has inputs for an extra wireless or wired microphone as well as a line-level input for connection to an external source such as an MP3 player for sound effects or background music. This feature is hard to find on equipment in this price range.

The battery life of the unit is surprisingly good. I was skeptical of the manufacturer's claim of how long it can run on "D" cells, but I have to admit it really does run a long time. We bought the 12 volt adapter (and I recommend this if you're going to run it all day), but for most short presentations (up to 3 or 4 hours) I just use the inboard "D" cells.

The manufacturer calls this a "half mile hailer". I haven't tested it at that range, but I would believe the claim based on what I have observed. With the volume at about 40% to 50%, we are able to give educational presentations in very crowded outdoor venues such as a town festival.

The wireless microphones are of very high quality, with no discernible difference in fidelity between wired and wireless in my tests. They operate on different radio frequencies and have so far been immune to crossover in our usage. These are expensive microphones, but as with the amplifier you get what you pay for. My only caveat is that using the wireless microphones properly does require some training. Anyone can learn it, but audio novices may need some practice to get the mic placement right.

My overall opinion is that this PA system does exactly what its manufacturer claims, and does it very well..."
